CAREER DISCOVERY PROJECT 2
INTERPOLATE: DOUBLE HOUSE
Project Requirements:
Take your two groups and combine them into one coherent whole without losing the interest and integrity of each one. This will require introducing a third spacial logic that can address the synthesizing of the two groups. Through modeling and drawing explore how the combination of the two logics is mediated and how the original sections are manipulated to create a new type of spatial integrity for the conjoined models. Consider how circulation and sequencing is re-calibrated by the overlap and how the two groups’ connectivity begins to re-figure individual moments as well as the comprehensive whole. Programming & Circulation Investigative Sketches These sketches are an exploration in programming and circulation for each character, as well as a cohesive program diagram exploring the intersection between the residents in the double house. Miss Torso craves attention while Agatha is a private recluse in her personal life. However, Agatha also runs a neighborhood bakery out of the first floor of the double house.

Programming & Site Context Sketches
These sketches are an exploration in programming and circulation, as well as a study in the surrounding site context for the double house.
The first floor consists of a public entrance into Agatha’s bakery. There is a seperate set of stairs for each of the two residents on either side of the bakery leading up to the second and third floor dwellings, respectively. The trees on the rear of the property provide privacy for Agatha on the second floor, who craves solitude and seclusion, but stop short of Miss Torso’s third floor residence and showroom.

Axonometric Drawing & Circulation Diagram
The circulation for the sketch model involved a spiral staircase.
The circulation in the final design involves stairs for each of the two residents, each stopping on a seperate but adjoined dining room loft.
Resident 2: A spiral staircase leads directly up to the third floor dwelling.
Resident 2: The stairs line the exterior of the building allowing visibility to the outside world, while concealing the Resident 1’s second floor dwelling. The stairs lead to the third floor residence, also with a stop at the dining loft.
Resident 1: A simple staircase leads to the second floor residence.
Resident 1: The stairs lead directly to the second floor residence with a stop midway to the private dining room loft between the first and second floors.

Combined Character Narrative Movie: Rear Window Movie: The Grand Budapest Hotel
Character: Miss Torso Character: Agatha
While appearing outwardly incompatible, Agatha and Miss Torso complement each other in their requirements for their shared home. Agatha enjoys retreating quietly into the background as Miss Torso basks in any available attention. Agatha is content to allow Miss Torso to deflect all potential interactions to herself. Agatha prefers smaller intimate spaces, allowing Miss Torso to occupy more square footage for dancing and entertaining guests.
The combined home will be a contrast in concealed and revealed elements, as well as large open spaces and smaller hidden spaces. Miss Torso will occupy the larger portion of the home, with large apertures providing clear sightlines into her daily activities. Agatha’s spaces will be hidden within the center of the home, with the exception of her bakery. Agatha’s space will revolve around a ground-level public-facing bakery, providing clear access points and large apertures enticing passersby to stop by for a treat on their way through the area. Agatha’s bakery will encourage people to pass through while discouraging lingering, not including any seating. Agatha will also have a large professional eat-in kitchen behind her bakery that is private from the outside world but shared with Miss Torso. A mezzanine provides access to seperate dining areas for each resident. Miss Torso has a public dining room for entertaining guests, whereas Agatha has a smaller private and hidden dining room. Agatha values her small private spaces. She will be able to retreat from the kitchen into her cozy intimate bedroom and library spaces, which are shielded from view both within the home from Miss Torso, and from the outside world. Miss Torso’s spaces will conceal Agatha’s from view, while also diverting all attention onto Miss Torso.
Miss Torso’s space revolves around her dance studio which reveals her activities via large apertures without providing any access to guests or the public in an enticing and provocative manner. Miss Torso also requires a living room that can entertain numerous guests and provide them with clear sightlines to her studio.
Miss Torso’s spaces lining the perimeter of the building will be the brightest spaces, receiving the more direct light of the two homes. Agatha’s spaces will be lit via secondary or deflected lighting, providing a softer, more intimate atmosphere, excluding the well-lit bakery.
Collage This collage represents an examination of filtered light, constructed via vertical hatching overlayed with a section drawing.

COLLECT: ARCHIVE THEATER
Project Requirements: Scale & Temporality
The final project focuses on collection at two scales and temporalities: the ‘permanent’ archival collection of film within the scale of the institution as well as the temporary’ collection of urbanites in an outdoor theater space at the scale of the urban site. Film, place and urban identity are intertwined in the design of a film archive and outdoor theater for Union Square, Somerville, MA.

MODEL
Iteration Iterating quickly through several massing models, I arrived at this final design, incorporating the best features of each massing. The final design includes an indoor and outdoor theater that mirror each other, as well as a roof awning that frames the view from the outdoor cafe.

Program
Access to each of the programs in this design revolves around the main staircase running through the center of the site. The stairs push and pull into and from the various programs. The stairs extend horizontally as seating for the outdoor theater. The seating for the indoor theater is the direct inverse of the outdoor theater. An opening through the stairs on the ground floor leads to the library and gallery.

INTERIOR DESIGN FINAL PROJECT CUBE
CCE:1588: INTRO TO INTERIOR DESIGN for the nonprofessional
For your project, you will create a four-person residence.
This residence will be a functional space for four people, and should be able to sustain them for a month without leaving the property. You will outfit the interior with various elements, following various specification: Dimensions: 30’ x 30’ Height: 20’ Mezzanine: 10’ high and half the footprint of the building Two Closets One permanent partition not exceeding 10’ in length

DESIGN:
CUBE
Four young professional women live and work together in this space. They are the founders of a tech startup.
The first floor includes an eat-in kitchen and living room lined with a sectional. The bathroom seperates the two bedrooms. A spiral staircase, whose location is a play on a grand staircase, leads up to the mezzanine.
The second floor loft functions as the office space, including computer and desk space for each resident, as well as a communal conference table, bench, and wall space for a wall calender and pin-ups. The style of the space is modern industrial with a slight feminine echo.

CCE 2341: WOODWORKING AND FURNITURE DESIGN
Over the course of the semester, students will work with the instructor on the design and building of a piece of furniture. Instruction in the usage and techniques of both machine and hand tools are covered in conjunction with the execution of the finished piece. Beginning with sketches, students will explore design and materials, fabricate models, and generate construction drawings, with a goal of fabricating and completing their own project.
STOOLS STACKED WOODWORKING:
SKETCHES & MODELS
Trigonometric Furniture My project arose out of a need for a small piece of multi-functional furniture. I tested my analog skills by recreating a milled set of stools using primary hand tools. I carved the 15 inch high stools out of one 2 foot long log. I found the angled cuts challenging using only traditional woodworking tools. After seperating the log with a chainsaw, the remaining cuts were made over several weeks with a hand saw.
