Sixth Year Architecture Project

International Airport Graduation project

The project involved creating a new international airport in Oradea, due to the existing one although being classified as international , it doesn’t serve any international flights due to runway restrictions. Also the existing airport, has a flight path that’s almost directly above the city center, as well as the site being overwhelmed by residential housing projects, plus many more issues described in the upcoming pages.

My vision was to create a modern airport that would make the city stand out, and generate interest, while also providing a solution to the existing airport problems. The initial terminal plan sketches that started it all. These were drawn on a sticky note, in 3-4 minutes to get the general idea of the airport plan while keeping in mind the requirements to not intersect the required terminal flows.

After 11 months of hard work the project was finally done, the final concept as of September 2013 can be seen on the left.

The Building Concept

The concept came from the idea of flight and motion. An Aztec plane was chosen as reference as well as an eagles beak to break the smooth lines and make it have a more aggresive, having thus a more imposing look and feel.

Counties associated to each nearby airport as well as the fact that the locals have to drive to other nearby airports although there’s an international airport in the city.

All airports from Romania, classiďŹ ed by type as well as the total number of passagers/year thus having an estimate number, that the proposed airport would target.

SWOT Analysis

Area Analysis & Studies

Map showcasing the top attractions in the county, to strenghten the idea that such an investment would not be wasted since there are quite a lot of attractions in the area thus an airport of such scale would boost the tourism in the area and in the county.

The site location is set near Nojorid, at a 3km distance from the existing airport. The proposal involved building a 3.5 Km runway & taxiways according to the international standards, including the runway markings, taxiways size as well as all the required facilities like hangars, helipads, control tower, maintanance area, catering & emergency services, defrosting area, etc. The site also features a cargo terminal which is connected to a railroad for easy package t ransport.

Terminal Plans

The main terminal has 3 levels (underground, ground floor and first floor) and it’s aimed at handling 1 million passangers/year. Traffic estimated based on other nearby airports.

Terminal Structure

The building structure is metalic made out of standard I shaped beams and columns as well as metalic trusses where large opening were needed. The roof is made out of space frames, on top of which reside composite fiber cement panels. All the metalic profiles used including the space frame were roughly calculated, giving an estimate of the different widths of the metalic profiles needed. The upper floor structural floor, seen above, uses I shaped beams where opening up to 6m are needed and trusses were opening up to 25m are needed.A large number of metalic joists are used, their size varying according to the distance between the main beams. In the lower right, a space frame is used due to it’s low profile and the roof sits on a double row of Y shaped columns found at the north and south

Custom made Space Frame Module The roof is made entirely out of single and double space frames, which were custom created in Revit according to the calculated desired opening size.

The catering and emergency services were placed in a remote area that wouldn’t compromise all the movement that happens in an airport while also allowing easy vehicle access from the airports entrance. The emergency services building features 3 vehicles per each service, according to the 1 million targeted passagers.

Cargo Processing

The cargo processing has a space frame roof with multiple I shaped beams to support it, and it features separate routes for incoming and outgoing cargo. The outgoing cargo is transported to the nearby railroad and from there shipped to different destinations.
