How to Improve Acoustics in Residential Design It might seem that residential development is one area where there’s a need to improve the acoustic design. That includes planning, noise impact, design, etc. it’s important to comply with standard. So there might still be complaints from residents. There are some important issues that must be handled correctly in residential acoustic design: 1. Planning There are standards set for internal noise levels in residential areas. This allows the right conditions for rest/sleep. The standards meet WHO recommendations and provide a good balance between health/amenity and practicality. The issue is local authorities aren’t clear about whether/how they require various developers to show that this standard is met. In terms of developers, commissioning an assessment for planning can result in extra costs if it shows natural ventilation through open windows isn’t the right solution. It’s important for the Local Planning authority to make sure the right design is used for all residential developments. 2. Design Standards Approved Document E (ADE) has set airborne/impact standards for sound insulation. However, the ADE standard isn’t a very high one. There have been situations where there are complaints of noise disturbance even when ADE was met.
