ROCHESTER CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT GLOBAL MEDIA ARTS HIGH SCHOOL @ FRANKLIN Samuel E. Rodríguez, Ph.D. Principal Brenda Harrington Assistant Principal
Lillie Stone Academy Director
Djinga St. Louis Assistant Principal
9 March 2010
Dear Sir or Madam: The following should serve as a letter of recommendation for Rajesh Barnabas. Mr. Rajesh Barnabas joined the Global Media Arts High School (GMA HS) team for the 2008 – 2009 school year and quickly became an integral part of the Media Arts Department. As a classroom teacher, Mr. Barnabas developed many innovative and engaging lessons for his students. Mr. Barnabas’ passion for the subject matter was evident and this became contagious for many of the students in his class. Mr. Barnabas assisted us by teaching the following courses: Introduction to Media, Mass Media, Video Production and Project Lab. Mr. Barnabas’ professional background in journalism, video production and instructional design corresponded well with the theme and course offerings at GMA High School. Rajesh and his colleagues in Media Department helped students at GMA HS found the GMA’s first LIVE morning show called What’s Good GMA. The show was a great success not only for our school, but also a first of its kind for the Rochester City School District. The show had a transformative effect on school spirit, and Rajesh had an important role in making that possible. It should be noted that receiving monetary compensation for additional time was not the defining force for Mr. Barnabas. As our school’s Technology Liaison to the District office, Mr. Barnabas coordinated instructional technology development at the school level with IT efforts extending out throughout the school district. His capacity to solve technical and computer problems and willingness to assist his colleagues in this area, was greatly appreciated by our school’s faculty and administration. He was one of our most reliable tech-support personnel in the school.
It is my pleasure to recommend Rajesh Barnabas for a teaching position at any high school seeking a quality candidate. I trust that he will make a nice addition to any school staff.
Sincerely,
Samuel Rodriguez, Ph.D. 950 Norton Street • Rochester, NY 14621 (585) 324 – 3720 Fax (585) 336 – 5549

501 Genesee Street, Rochester, N.Y. 14611 Recommendation for: Mr. Rajesh Barnabas, Social Studies Teacher Mr. William Geraci, Program Administrator Mr. Barnabas was a welcome addition to the Wilson Magnet faculty. He was hired after school started last October 2002, which in itself is a significant hurdle. This was also his first year teaching. Despite these challenges, Mr. Barnabas progressed quickly into an effective and inspiring teacher.
Mr. Barnabas’ dedication to the students, their needs and interests, was exemplary. He spent long hours
after school preparing his lessons, offering extra help for students and simultaneously providing a place for students to study and socialize. Often, he was among the last members of the faculty to leave the building at night.
As to his in-class teaching skills, Mr. Barnabas is able to connect the students’ affective domain and
the curriculum. He creatively weaves events and people from the past into lessons for today- stories that his students can relate to. For example, he wrote class plays that put a modern spin on historical events and people. His student-oriented approach to teaching paid off at the end of the school year, when 85% of his United States History and Government students passed the New York State Regents exam. This percentage is far above the norm in the Rochester City School District.
Respect for the dignity of students is a hallmark of Mr. Barnabas’s approach to discipline. His kind ways
and sincerity won the hearts of students and compelled them to return this respect. Likewise he is personable and receptive to suggestions from faculty mentors. He gave great effort to meet the requests of both students and administration while maintaining the integrity of his own teaching style. To his credit the clarity in lesson planning and his focus on the Regents curriculum improved throughout the year.
Mr. Barnabas’ greatest contribution was to our over all school community. His enthusiasm both in and
out of class was infectious. The list of his involvement in extra-curricular activities is too long to recount here. It is only fair to mention a few. He initiated with the help of students an after-school movie event called “Wilson Cinema”. He traveled to Buffalo as a judge for Wilson’s Debate Team. He participated in an international festival called “Wilson Days” offering students a glimpse of his Indian culture. He brought in a number of special guests to his class

including a musician and a former history professor. He attended many of his students’ sporting events and practiced with the soccer teams. He also chaperoned the Junior-Senior Dance and attended graduation. Mr. Barnabas did a solid job for us last year. Please call me at 328-3440, x2101 with any question that you may have.

Career In Teaching Intern Final Report
Intern’s Name: Rajesh Barnabas Certification: Transition A/MediaTrack Mentor’s Name: Suzanne Winn School: GMA - Franklin
A. Describe the progress this intern made during the school year. Include references to growth and/or problems in meeting the professional expectations for interns and any other areas germane to the intern’s future in the teaching profession.
I would like to recommend Rajesh Barnabus continue as a Global Media teacher for the Rochester City School District. I have worked with Rajesh since I was assigned to be his mentor in August and base my opinion on thirty-five formal observations, informal observations, and several conferences and discussions. Rajesh taught four different classes this semester including Media, Introduction to Media, Video Production, and Project Lab. Since there was no curriculum, Rajesh had to design his own. Rajesh started his classes with a “Ten minute ticker.” In order to do this, students had to get on Rajesh’s Wiki Site. Each class had their own page. Students created their own blogs and had an On-line portfolio. All work was completed here and posted. There was ample time provided for students to practice new skills. I feel the students in Rajesh’s classes learned how to do a number of applications and programs they had never used before this year. Many lessons included learning how to use different software programs including Adobe Flash, Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. Lessons remained student-centered and interactive and included a book project where students actually published their own individual book or a class book. These were converted into as magazine with text and pictures. Students also created a video project with RCTV shown on Channel 12. It was a documentary on parents’ opinions called “Parents Speak Out.” In addition, Rajesh brought in real world experiences via seven guest lecturers from various professions related to the media industry. Rajesh made a few mistakes common to first year teachers and worked hard to correct them. At times, Rajesh’s classroom management has seen spurts of progress followed by lapses and regressions. He had to learn to focus on the class as a whole instead of a few students at a time. He also had to learn how to plan ahead with “teacher helpers” so students didn’t have to wait for him to come to each and every one of them to show them a new process. He also had to learn to devise a management system and follow through with it consistently. I think Rajesh now understands the importance of consistency and over-planning in the classroom as well as his other projects. Although Rajesh is attending graduate school, he still found time to become very involved in the Global Media community at Franklin. He built strong relationships with colleagues with assistance on various projects that fell outside of his direct duties in the Media Dept. This included working on the BANG video with help from an English teacher and working on the journalism magazine with another teacher. He also assisted many teachers in the computer lab. In addition, he co-taught with another video teacher to produce “What’s GMA” a morning show presented to students at his school. All of these projects took up a lot of time outside the classroom. In addition, Rajesh became a member of the Professional Learning Circle called “Project Look Sharp” which is Media Department collaboration with Ithaca College’s media school. He will be presenting his year long assignment called “Constructivist Models of Learning Using Network Platforms: Pitfalls and Promises” in a Town Hall meeting in May. He is also a member of the Media Dept. Curriculum Development Team. This summer this team is in charge of designing a CTE certification path for GMA. In addition, he is designing a Garage Band curriculum for RCSD. Because of Rajesh’s tireless effort and his ability to learn from his mistakes, I recommend he be hired as a teacher in the Global Media Department at Franklin. I think his classroom instruction and management style will continue to improve next year. I also think his involvement in so many projects at Franklin make him an asset to the department and the school.

November 26, 2007 To: Whom it May Concern I am pleased to write this recommendation on behalf of Rajesh Barnabas. Rajesh is a creative individual with a passion and dedication that is evident in his work with youth and throughout the community. Rajesh was a former Youth Development Specialist and Youth Organizer with Charles Settlement House, a neighborhood based social service agency serving the residents of Northwest Rochester. During his employment, Rajesh was responsible for organizing and mobilizing youth towards civic engagement and service learning. Rajesh was very successful in guiding and supporting the youth in developing, planning and implementing service projects in their neighborhood and beyond. Rajesh often utilized his own resources, contacts and connections to acquire services and build new relationships to benefit the youth, the community and our agency. The following collaborations were formed through Rajesh: Rochester Indy Media, The Corn Hill Creamery and RIT’s photography department. Rajesh’s innovative techniques and approaches to youth development were realized through his development of several youth led projects. These projects included: WXXI’s Raising 100,000 Voices, for which he served as an artist mentor of two of the youth artist who received awards and recognition for their work. In addition, Rajesh’s work with the School #17 Photography Club culminated with 6th grade student, Joseph Pratt’s photograph being entered into the Rochester Big Picture Contest. Rajesh’s initiative and ingenuity was realized as Joseph’s picture was selected from over 7,000 photographical entries that included professional photographers and became a 40x60 photo mosaic on the wall of SUNY Brockport Metro Center. These are just some of the highlights of the Rajesh’s contributions to youth, families and residents served by Charles Settlement House. Rajesh can best be described as a resourceful, generous youth advocate who will stop short of nothing to ensure that youth receive a fair shot and be afforded opportunities to reach their full potential. Rajesh Barnabas would be an asset to any organization and would offer creativity, commitment and dedication. Sincerely, Danette Campbell-Bell Child and Youth Program Manager, Charles Settlement House

November 9, 2007 To Whom It May Concern: This is my personal recommendation for Rajesh Barnabas. I had the opportunity to work with Rajesh during his contracted time period here at ElementK. In that short period of time Rajesh and I worked on several projects together including the development of several E-Learning and Instructor Lead Training courses. He learned quickly the necessary skill set to begin authoring courses using our established process standards and authoring tools. Rajesh brought to the team sound communication, creative, and design skills. He took the initiative to suggest ideas that would be beneficial to the courses he worked on. Rajesh is a team player and on several occasions went the extra mile to make sure that projects were completed by set deadlines and that those projects were of good quality. I highly recommend Rajesh for employment. He is a team player and would make a great asset to any organization.
Sincerely, Francis M. Gough Engagement Manager

Even the messups sometimes turned out to be masterpieces. Below is an example of a problem with using cameras that don’t advance to the next frame properly. This student accidentally transposed an indoor shot of a family member on top of an outdoor school playground snapshot.
In 2005, as part of youth programs at Charles Settlement House, I started a photography club at School 17 on a shoe-string budget, soliciting donations from area retailers and community members. The program was a huge success and still existsts today.

I entered a number of my students’ work into an international photo contest hosted by Big Picture Rochester and the miraculous happened. One of the students Joseph Pratt won and was awarded by having the picture he snapped made into a 40 x 60 foot photomosaic that still hangs today on the side of the Suny Brockport Metro Center on St. Paul Street.

http://gmashow.blip.tv/ I helped research the equptment needed and set up the technological logistics for launching Rochester City School Districts first student television show to be streamed live over the Intenet. A number of my video production students assisted me on my own documentary projects - one about parents’ feelings about the Rochester school district called Parents Speak Out. Students did camera and soundtrack work for my most recent documentary FUA - From Up Above, about the graffiti artists in the Clinton Avenue neighborhood of Rochester. Top left is a film festival that From Up Above was screened at. Both films were commissioned by Rochester Community Television, and students recieved money for assisting me on these projects. Students also recieved money for assisting me in editing a weekly show for RCTV called What’s Hot, which won the stations Best Talk Show award in 2009. My student Nate Kinney spearheaded the effort to establish a stop-motion animation studio at Global Media Arts High School. I just assisted him on getting the equiptment to do it and finding the right computer software equiptment (Frame by Frame or SAM). Nate is pictured to the left presenting his senior project which was about stop-motion animation.

Above is a program from a night of teacher presentations of materials to students, parents, colleagues, and the community. This was the culminating event of a year-long professional development program in media literacy called Look Sharp. The program consisted of a colleagial circle, where teachers from the English and Media department at GMA high school were mentored by Ithaca College instructors. My presentation was titled “Internet and the Constructivist Classroom.”
Above is a snapshot of the workspace of the Adobe Flash application. In the summer of 2009 I taught a 3-hour professional development course in Adobe Flash to Rochester City School District teachers. I picked up skills in this program and many others while working as an instructional designer for Element K.

As Project Coordinator for the Teachers Leaders Quality Partnerships (TLQP) program at Nazareth College, I designed two websites - one being strictly informational, the second (below) an interactive platform for teachers to exchange ideas and share lesson plans. My job responsibilities include assisting teachers from partner schools in the RCSD with integrating technology into their classrooms and coordinating professional development opportnuities.
These are examples of graphic design projects I have worked on with my students or for publications.
