University of California, Riverside Engineering Building Unit 2 Riverside, California
RBB collaborated with SRG Partnership for the design and construction of the $36 million Engineering Building Unit 2 (EBU2). The EBU2 provides state of the art research and teaching space for the Computer Science and Engineering and Electrical Engineering departments. The new 152,000 GSF building forms a gateway to the Engineering Precinct. The program is divided into two categories: Research and Discovery, and Teaching and Learning. Teaching and Learning spaces are planned for the first and second floors and align directly with the existing Bourns Hall. This relationship provides a natural continuation of undergraduate activities. Research and Discovery space is designed into office and lab clusters on the third through fifth floors. Locating research and teaching space in the same building allows undergraduates, graduate students and faculty to interact, in line with the college’s emphasis on handsͲon laboratory experience to reinforce theory learned in the classroom. The 100,000 SF research building concentrates on plant, pest and microbial genomics. The institute focuses on the development of new products such as medicinal plants, safer and more nutritious foods, stressͲ resistant crops, foods with a prolonged shelf life, diseaseͲresistant animals, and novel bioͲbased products. This $14.4 million new facility provides a variety of multiͲdisciplinary research and teaching laboratories that will be used by the chemistry, biological and environmental sciences. It is a 42,000 square foot, threeͲstory building, with five organic teaching labs on the first floor, and ten research labs on the second and third floors. In the design of this facility, RBB achieves new identities for both the Science Laboratory and Chemistry programs. The Science Laboratories I builds upon existing contextual vocabularies along the Carillon Mall and the Pierce Hall Addition, also designed by RBB. The design provides the science precinct with a strong presence on the Mall and a new front door. In the precinct plan, areas are defined to enhance opportunities for academic interaction in the newly created courtyard and outdoor spaces. The plan is intended to provide the college with a framework for development, circulation and open space that satisfies projected space needs, supports the College’s research and education mission and contributes to the campus quality of life and environment. “We thank you for taking so much care with the detail and designing a set of laboratories so beautiful, that I am afraid to show them to others in the campus. At UC Riverside growth in the student population in the fields of biological and physical sciences, biomedicine and engineering created the need for additional teaching and research chemistry laboratory space. RBB was commissioned by the university to serve as architect for the design of this $11 million, 28,500 SF addition which includes a total of 12 laboratory units with 4 instrument laboratories, 8 synthetic laboratories and graduate student and faculty offices. The AIA awardͲwinning Pierce Hall Addition is on a very prominent and visible site, north of the Carillon Mall and adjacent to the existing Pierce Hall. RBB designed the addition with sensitivity to the site and respect for the existing building and campus vernacular. A concept of lightness and transparency cohesively integrated with shading devices respond to the local desert climate. The southern elevation has been developed as an extension of the existing building with a series of panelized brick walls, carrying the same color and texture of the existing structure, which enclose the fume shafts for the laboratories. The new 97,000 SF building will support education, research, and outreach involving environmental science and economic development. The multiͲdisciplinary science building will house geosciences and civil engineering teaching and research laboratories for geosciences and civil engineering; as well as integrated work areas for Public Policy and Administration, and Political Science. Organization and layout of the building will promote collaboration between scientists, engineers, and public policy faculty on environmental policy issues. Work areas are configured within a flexible design module. The infrastructure system is also designed to ensure future flexibility. This approach will permit rapid and inexpensive reconfiguration in response to changes in research project needs. Sustainability principles related to site development, water efficiency, energy, materials & resources, and indoor air quality are incorporated in the design. Energy saving components include a variableͲair volume HVAC system with high efficiency condensing hotͲwater boilers, increased wall and roof insulation, highͲefficiency windows, and a low windowͲwall ratio. The Seaver Hall north renovation project includes upgrades to 50,000 SF of teaching and research laboratories, classrooms, faculty and administrative offices in order to provide Pomona College with state of the art science facilities. The goal of this renovation project is to create a state of the art chemistry building, allowing Pomona College to be a leading science and research Institute. While the existing labs in Seaver Hall North are functional, they are limited in their capacity to meet the increased enrollment in chemical science. A high priority is to provide a safe, energy efficient, and well ventilated teaching environment. While this emphasis led us toward the upgrade of the mechanical infrastructure, it was pertinent to realize the demands of the science research laboratories. Upgrading the laboratories is essential to bringing Pomona College to the forefront as a leader in science academia. The design team, together with the Faculty, Campus Planning Department and Maintenance Department, arrived at a design concept that allowed for versatility, efficiency, and integration of laboratories and support spaces. This program allows for adaptable spaces at the south west corner allowing for future connections to the new Biology Building at this location.

RBB completed planning, programming and design for the renovation of office, classroom and laboratory space in the basement level of a 1960s building. The scope includes four new biology laboratories meeting either BSLͲ2 or BSLͲ1 standards. One lab includes specialty equipment for bee research. A key factor in the planning process was working directly with the Harvey Mudd College faculty to develop the detailed Functional Program based on current and future curriculum needs. The design team evaluated all existing building systems to accommodate the modern laboratories. The space required upgrades of fire and life/safety systems, plumbing, emergency power, acoustics and exhaust systems.

RBB is providing design and construction services for the renovation of dry and wet labs, engineering clinic space, offices, and common areas within the 1960s era Parsons Engineering Building. Renovations also encompass acoustical improvements throughout the upgraded spaces, and ADA upgrades to restrooms and corridors. The scope of work includes analysis of the overall engineering department needs and the current building performance, in order to provide a plan for more efficient mechanical and electrical systems and new exhaust hoods to improve air flow. Construction requires phasing and coordination with staff to minimize disruption to students.

RBB has provided programming planning, design, and construction services for the interior renovation within the existing Biology Building at Muir College, built in 1967. The building is a wetͲ lab research building supporting the Division of Biological Sciences research in Cell and Developmental Biology; Ecology, Behavior and Evolution. The third floor laboratories exclusively support biology functions, and were in need of major renovation to upgrade functionality, improve lab efficiency and overall safety, and encourage collaborative research. The scope includes complete renovation of lab spaces to provide an open lab configuration. Specific upgrades include fire/smoke detection and fire protection systems, HVAC, fume hood replacement, plumbing systems, and upgrade of the electrical system including lighting and standby power, ADA compliance and all new interior finishes.

Located in Muir College, the Applied Physics and Mathematics Building renovation includes 45,000 square feet to accommodate projected space needs of technical programs. The project renovates existing office space into new offices, classrooms, and labs (wet and dry) for anthropology, biology, language lab, linguistics, mathematics, and human development. RBB’s design worked with the existing architecture and limited budget to achieve an updated look. The mechanical space upgrades were extensive to accommodate modern, safe lab space. Limited floorͲtoͲfloor height presented a challenge for the stringent MEP criteria for new labs.

RBB was commissioned to provide a DPP and Renovation for the Biological Sciences II Building constructed in 1971. RBB provided schematic, design development, and contract documents for interior renovations. The improvements included upgrade of fire and life safety, renewing of infrastructure, and renovated classrooms, wet and dry labs, encompassing approximately 33,500 SF of the 71,500 SF, sixͲ story building. Specific upgrade projects addressed a new fire sprinkler system, elevator safety systems, selective water damage repair, and minimum ADA compliance upgrades. RBB completed construction of the phased renovation in 2008. RBB was also provided a selective DPP Renovation for Noble Hall, a twoͲstory building built in 1958. The faculty’s primary goal was to upgrade interior space, to create a laboratory and support environment that allowed for maximum flexibility, efficiency, and integration of research spaces.

RBB completed the renovation of an existing 51,000 SF, fourͲstory 1950s building. Young Hall constitutes part of the Court of Sciences complex at UCLA. Major design goals were to establish a “learning center” laboratory environment for chemistry, biology, microbiology wet labs and support, along with a computer aided instruction resource center; create new building systems and services that respond to the technical requirements of equipment and lab functions; facilitate responsive, flexible programs to incorporate future change; and capture an optimum amount of assignable area within the building shell.

This building was originally designed by RBB in the early 1980s. In 1996, RBB renovated three oncology floors. The project totals 30,000 SF and consists of three laboratory research floors. Functions include equipment, work, tissue culture, and cold rooms, and administrative support. A phased construction plan was required to complete this project within an occupied building. The design concept provides vertical stacking of laboratory modules along the east wall to ensure efficiency, modularity, flexibility and maintenance. The building systems were retrofitted and to include external shafts at the corners of the building.

RBB was commissioned to provide a Detailed Program Plan (DPP) for a new 79,000 GSF Bioengineering building for Stem Cell and related research programs. The project was completed on an accelerated timeline in order to meet critical schedule requirements to secure state funding for design and construction. The new building site is located near the center of the campus, with limited flexibility of the existing site boundaries. Consideration was needed of accessibility from the surrounding pedestrian malls Based on careful study of the site restrictions and a survey of the Bioengineering research program requirements, six planning options were developed. Two options were prioritized and cost estimating was completed for those. The final DPP document was completed in a total of 51 days from Notice to Proceed to final State Funding Submittal. “I can't say enough about RBB. University of California, Santa Barbara Physics and Engineering Building Ͳ Programming Santa Barbara, California
RBB provided a DPP for a new science building to provide shared research and teaching space for the Physics Department and College of Engineering. A goal for Physics is to house all their faculty and support in one area to support their research goals. This consolidation is expected to foster better collaboration and innovation and improve the support of their programs. COE stated across the board space deficiencies in all five departments, specifically lack of sufficient quality lab space and outdated lab areas; their current dry labs cannot be renovated into wet labs due to prohibitive costs. Enhancing their common space to develop a sense of community was also noted as a priority. The UCSB Vision 2025 Long Range Development Plan limits the campus development and sets strict guidelines to be taken into consideration when developing the Master Plan. Four sites were initially selected as potential opportunities for the development of the proposed program, and test fit analysis helped to eliminate two sites. The remaining sites were analyzed and massing studies and block programs were developed to meet the project goals.

This 1.2 million SF, 520Ͳbed new hospital is a complete replacement facility for the existing hospital that was seismically damaged. As Consulting Architect, RBB was principally responsible for the planning and design of the state of the art digital imaging and emergency departments as well as more than 110,000 sq. ft. that includes clinical laboratory, nutritional services, central sterile and other support functions. Imaging provides adult and pediatric inpatient services including diagnostic radiology and fluoroscopy, IVP/tomography, ultrasound, CT, and MRI.

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA HEALTHCARE CONSULTATION CENTER II Los Angeles, CA
To meet a growing demand for medical office space, RBB designed this 250,000 SF, $43 million outpatient center for the University of Southern California Health Sciences Campus. The 7 story Healthcare Consultation Center II offers a range of diagnostic and treatment services including outpatient surgery, ambulatory diagnostics, imaging, internal medicine, orthopedic surgery, organ transplant, psychiatry, anesthesia / pain management program, neurology, head and neck surgery, and obstetrics. The building also includes a multiͲdisciplinary medical clinic for special programs and services.

The Brain Imaging Center is a new facility comprised of 7,000 gross square feet to provide research space for the School of Medicine. The facility houses a 3.0 T, & 4.0 T human MRI scanner, a 4.7 T MRI scanner, and a 7.0 T small scanner, all with associated control and computer support spaces. The building design expresses the circulation and entry points and the concrete MRI elements. The exterior materials include smooth and sandblasted pouredͲinͲplace concrete shear walls with post and beam construction, and fixed aluminum windows in the administrative areas. The corridor spine that separates the MRI and technical core from the administrative offices features a skylight above and clerestory lights into the offices. This project represents a significant first step in the implementation of the neighborhood plan for the medical school as defined in the campus master plan. The facility extends the medical school to the south, adjacent to the street and sidewalk, and articulates the first component of an urban context in the otherwise more rural campus. The glass and concrete facility establishes a pedestrian scale and architectural vernacular with a strong vertical rhythm and modulation that sets a standard for the future growth and expansion of the medical campus. Drought resistant landscaping features lowͲ maintenance and native plants including yucca, lupinus, ceanothus, agave, sage and eucalyptus trees. AIA Design Award
California State University Northridge Physical Education Building Los Angeles, California
This $5 million, 114,000 square foot project included seismic retrofit, earthquake repairs and upgrades to meet life safety and ADA code compliance. Scope of work included reinforcement of the concrete structure, addition of metal panels to the gymnasium interior for sound attenuation, a new retractable bleacher system, and an awards display case. In order to be finished before the Fall semester, the project required an accelerated schedule and was successfully completed (from Notice To Proceed to owner occupancy) in seven months.

University of California Riverside Pentland Hills Student Housing – Phase 1 Riverside, California
RBB Architects, in association with Ratcliff as design architects, were commissioned to serve as programmers, precinct planners and architects for the Undergraduate Student Housing project to include 1,200 suite style units. The complex will include computer labs, classrooms, study lounges, convenience store, social lounges, game room, laundry facilities, general conferencing space, central office/mailroom, and recreational areas. The precinct planning and programming efforts created a framework for the development of a housing project that coincides with the university’s long term goals. The general design goals included the cohesive development of the housing complex and its relationship to the adjacent residence halls. These goals also included the creation of an environment that is conducive to the educational process while augmenting the visual enhancement and development of the campus. The specific goals included the development of a complex that contributes to the overall campus image and takes into account pedestrian oriented outdoor activities by creating a series of interconnected environments. The team designed a state of the future housing complex to strengthen the academic, cultural and social interaction of the student population, in a setting that will preserve and enhance the beauty of the natural environment.
