SALUTE AT ASU GAMMAGE
ASU Gammage and US Airways share a commitment to our veterans, active duty military and their families. The US Airways Salute at ASU Gammage is a partnership that allows our nation’s heroes and their families to see the best of Broadway each season.
MILITARY FAMILY FIRST NIGHTS Each year, more than 100 family members of deployed military personnel annually receive tickets to attend three Broadway performances. These families serve our nation at home, while loved ones are serving abroad and in order to honor that sacrifice this program provides them with exclusive opportunities including a meetand-greet with the cast. The Military Family First Nights program was conceived by ASU Gammage Executive Director Colleen JenningsRoggensack. As a daughter of a career military father, Colleen distinctly remembers trips to New York with her mother to get standing room only tickets to Broadway, opera and the ballet. To date, the Military Family First Nights program has provided more than 2,000 tickets to military families, active duty military and veterans. Military Family First Nights are made possible in part by additional funding provided by Arizona Lottery and The Broadway League.
HEROES NIGHT This annual pre-show event honors veterans and active duty military and includes special guests, giveaways and a show of patriotism that will warm the soul. This season, Heroes Night took place at opening night of WAR HORSE on Tuesday, February 5 and featured a special salute to animals who have served our country. Heroes Night is made possible with additional funding provided by Macy’s and The Arizona Republic/azcentral.com. MILITARY TICKET FUND ASU Gammage has forged a new relationship with Veterans Upward Bound at ASU; a local chapter of the national organization dedicated to fully developing the personal potential of all U.S. military veterans. Each year, ASU Gammage and US Airways provide Veterans Upward Bound with tickets to each Broadway show. VETTIX Since 2010, ASU Gammage has worked with VetTix to allow more than 1,000 active duty military, dependents and veterans to experience Broadway performances at no cost.

The following article was written by ASU Gammage VIPs Bill and Sue Ahearn. A great university needs a great theater. That’s the quick reason for our support of ASU Gammage. There was no better place for a formal date when we first met. Great Broadway shows and a wide variety of concerts and other performances; all in a magnificent theater. ASU Gammage was just seven years old then and pretty classy for a young couple. Suits and cocktail dresses were the custom for theater then. As we planned to marry, season tickets were in those plans. We still have those season tickets, though we’ve moved up from row 26. Broadway is better than ever, and we look forward to each season with excitement. It’s still a great place for today’s young (and not-so-young) couples to have a formal date. We want to make sure that they have the ASU Gammage that we have enjoyed for 40 years. That’s why we became donors years ago and, in recent years, provided for a bequest to ASU Gammage in our estate plan.

CAMP BROADWAY MAKES DREAMS COME TRUE CAMP BROADWAY is a unique summer camp experience for children that helps develop selfesteem, teamwork and creative potential. Direct from New York, CAMP BROADWAY will have its 14th year at ASU Gammage June 2428, 2013 and this year is centered around the smash-hit Broadway musical SISTER ACT. This comprehensive day camp for kids aged 10-17 has no experience necessary and only enthusiasm is required. Campers work collaboratively with distinguished Broadway performers, writers and designers in classes that include acting, scene study, improvisation, music theory, singing and dancing. Additionally, campers see a hit Broadway show each year. The week-long day camp culminates in a “Family Finale” performance in which the campers’ groups stage excerpts from Broadway
hits as well as their own Broadway mash-ups that the campers create and write themselves. Two-time camper Alex Trumble talks about what it means to her to be a part of CAMP BROADWAY; “It means getting an experience like no other, getting to act on stage, sing on stage, a nice family environment to get to learn everything you possibly can. To get to just be yourself and be a part of a family that loves Broadway, loves teaching about Broadway and loves giving you wonderful classes on dancing, singing, acting, everything that you could possibly think of. You get to express yourself in a way that you can’t really any other way.” The program has also become a favorite of many ASU Gammage VIPs, who fund scholarships annually for 20-30% of the participants. “I support Camp Broadway because it affords kids the opportunity to have an authentic theatrical performance experience,” says ASU Gammage VIP David Horowitz. “The lessons learned and the friends made last them well beyond their time at camp.” For more information on funding a scholarship student, please contact our Development department at 480.965.1910. WHOOPI GOLDBERG (Producer) is one of an elite group of artists who have won Academy, Grammy, Emmy and Tony awards. She got her start on stage and was last seen on Broadway in Xanadu. She earned a Tony nomination for her return to the Lyceum Theatre commemorating the 20th anniversary of her original one-woman show. She starred in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and produced and starred in the revival of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. She won the Tony for producing Thoroughly Modern Millie, and produced the hit West End production of Sister Act (she also appeared as Mother Superior in the show for a special limited engagement last year). She has appeared in more than 50 films and is the moderator of ABC’s “The View.” In addition to her successful film and television career, she is also a best-selling author.

Who’s WhO JOOP VAN DEN ENDE (Producer) is a renowned international theater and television producer and President of Stage Entertainment. Since the early 1960s he has produced more than 100 plays and comedies from the international repertoire, as well as a wide range of international musicals across Europe. He set his first steps on Broadway through a joint venture with the Dodgers resulting in Tony Award-winning musicals like 42nd Street, Into the Woods and Urinetown. He returned to Broadway with Sister Act in 2011. In 1994, Van den Ende and John deMol founded Endemol, the largest independent international television production company. In 2000, he left Endemol and founded Stage Entertainment, the largest independent theater company in Europe. In 2001, Joop and his wife Janine founded the VandenEnde Foundation in the Netherlands, which aims to create opportunities for talented young artists and cultural entrepreneurs. BILL TAYLOR (Producer) entered the music business as a director for the Sanctuary Group in 1984. In 1989 he joined the board of Lord Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group and from 1997 to 2005 was CEO. Bill played a major part in RUG’s expansion and during his time there the company produced more than 70 shows in London, on Broadway and around the world including Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph… and Sunset Boulevard. In 2001 he acquired, on behalf of RUG, Stoll Moss Theatres. As CEO of Stage Entertainment UK & US, Bill’s credits include Hairspray, Disney’s High School Musical and Sister Act at the London Palladium and Broadway Theatre. RANDALL A. BUCK (Producer) has produced more than 50 productions across the globe for Troika Entertainment. Before joining Troika in 1999, Mr. Buck was Vice President and General Manager for Livent in Toronto. Mr. Buck was a stage manager for more than 20 years, surviving a year with Mary Martin and Carol Channing in Jimmy Kirkwood’s Legends!, a year in Japan with Siegfried & Roy, opening The Phantom of the Opera Music Box Company and opening Show Boat on Broadway. When not on the road Randy can be found in the Washington, D.C. area with his wife, Angela, and their daughter Sierra Ashley Buck. STAGE ENTERTAINMENT USA INC (Producer). ON Media Publications – A resource for great performances on and off stage
A Team Approach Two surgeons, returning from World War II, set up a practice to serve the needs of the growing population of the Valley of the Sun. Dr. William Bishop and Dr. Alvin Swenson dedicated the skills and expertise gained from their war time service to maintain the lives and livelihoods of those throughout their community. The team founded what was to become The Orthopedic Clinic Association (TOCA), the state’s first medical practice specializing in orthopedic surgery. In the sixty years since that first clinic, TOCA continues the founder’s mission to provide the community with innovative and comprehensive orthopedic care. The team has expanded since 1949 to include 20-plus physicians committed to restoring, maintaining and promoting the overall health and fitness of patients at five locations – Phoenix, Tempe, Scottsdale, Glendale and Mesa. TOCA applies the same level of advanced treatment strategies to get professional and college level players and high school athletes back on the field, court and track. The TOCA Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship Program is the first accredited program in the state and provides future surgeons with the training to continue to keep pace with the Valley’s active lifestyle. Three of the Valley’s leading teams – Phoenix Suns, Phoenix Mercury and Arizona State University –

selected TOCA as Team Physicians to keep their athletes in shape and in the game. "The physicians and staff at TOCA strive to provide the most advanced state of the art care to all patients” says Evan Lederman MD, an orthopedic sports medicine specialist and the President of TOCA. “Our goal is to get you back to your life whether you are an elite athlete or a weekend warrior. Our physicians are highly trained and recognized experts in their respective specialties" This spirit of teamwork is at the center of TOCA’s patient care as physicians and staff form a partnership with each patient to create a unique and effective game plan to address the individual’s needs. Through orthopedics, physical therapy, hand therapy, sports medicine and other integrated approaches, TOCA gets patients back to life. Colleen Jennings-Roggensack has served as the Executive Director for ASU Gammage and Assistant Vice President for Cultural Affairs for more than 20 years. Jennings-Roggensack established ASU Gammage’s organizational mission of Connecting CommunitiesTM which allows ASU Gammage to go beyond its doors to make a difference in the community through the shared experience of the arts. In the last 20 years under her leadership, ASU Gammage has commissioned 22 works, more than any other presenter in the Southwest. As Arizona’s only Tony Awards® voter and former President of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP), Jennings-Roggensack has made a lasting impact on the Valley through arts advocacy. She also serves on The Broadway League Board of Governors and the Creative Capital board. She has been honored with numerous awards including the APAP’s 2007 Fan Taylor Award, The Broadway League’s 2009 Touring Broadway Award, the 2012 Governor’s Arts Award as well as being named a 2012 Trendsetter according to Trends Magazine.

Formerly a dancer and choreographer, she is married to Dr. Kurt Roggensack and has a 22-year old daughter, Kelsey, a recent Williams College graduate and four time All-American swimmer.

Journey Home THE ARTS CHANGE LIVES FOR THE BETTER Entering its 11th year as an ASU Gammage program, Journey Home, an Arts Experience for incarcerated women, helps female inmates at Estrella Jail discover a personal sense of constructive identity through the power of the arts. Each year, Journey Home culminates with a performance by the inmates in which they perform their own choreography, display their visual arts and creative writing projects and tell their stories to community members and prison administration. For six weeks prior to the performance, the inmates meet weekly and go through training in movement, visual arts, creative writing and storytelling. The intent is to help them build personal skills and selfesteem and demonstrate alternative methods to avert destructive behavior. The women then begin to see themselves as productive, creative people. This year’s theme, Sacred Woman: Who you are is who you choose to be, takes the women on a journey into their soul and seeks to shift their sense of self into one that serves their highest good.
