THE ART OF BANKING Since 1984, National Bank of Arizona has been serving the financial services needs of communities across the state. With more than 70 branches in 50 communities, NB|AZ is the state’s largest community bank. For just as long, NB|AZ has been serving and supporting the cultural needs of its community as an ardent supporter of the arts in all forms. From live performances to art therapy and educational outreach, NB|AZ and its nearly 1,000 employees statewide view our responsibility to the growth of the cultural community as important as any financial investment. When you think about it, NB|AZ practically grew up with many of the fine arts programs in this state. We have always felt that what we do is less about building a ‘portfolio’ and more about building a community. We believe that the arts bring a sense of community.
Keith Maio
From bank executives serving on performing and fine arts boards to chairing fundraising efforts, NB|AZ employees have been a constant source of support since the bank was founded in Tucson nearly 30 years ago. Today, the bank’s commitment to the arts community goes far beyond volunteering and sponsorship. NB|AZ is so proud to present this inaugural issue of ON Stage Arts Guide. When we learned that ON Media was collaborating with the major arts organizations in the Valley to bring a single source of information to the public, we knew we had to get involved. The mission of ON Stage is consistent with our commitment to supporting a vibrant arts community. We are grateful to the arts community for the opportunity to support their efforts. We are equally proud of our partnership with the 5 Arts Circle, ON Media and the Act One Foundation to help bring the arts to as many of our fellow Arizonans as possible. It is truly an honor.

WELCOME
WELCOME FROM MAYOR GREG STANTON THE CENTER OF THE ARTS IN THE SOUTHWEST There is no question that arts and cultural activities enrich the lives of every Phoenician and make our communities a more vibrant place. We are so fortunate to have many incredible performance groups and venues that help provide a high quality of life for our residents. That’s something I learned early on. When I was young, my mom took my brother and sisters and me to the free Sunday performances at Phoenix Symphony Hall. At the time, I may have taken those shows for granted, but they instilled in me a love for music and a life-long appreciation for performing arts. Every child in our community should have that experience.
Greg Stanton
We work hard to ensure that the arts continue to enrich the lives of our youth. Through arts and culture grants, our diverse arts community grows, supports public art, and through the Arts-in-Education effort, encourages schools to integrate art into curricula. These efforts add to our already robust set of cultural and entertainment options. The arts also play a critical role as an economic engine for the local economy with every performance helping to support restaurants, hotels and so many other businesses. With new shows, performances, ballets, operas and concerts always coming to the Valley, we truly are a center for the arts in the Southwest.
Greg Stanton Mayor of Phoenix

of NAPOLI, again at Symphony Hall. Choreographed by fellow Dane August Bournonville, NAPOLI dances the festive story of Gennaro, a poor fisherman and his beloved Teresina, who must endure trials and temptations to overcome an evil sea spirit. These are two examples of the robust menu of ballet offerings found in this guide.
The year of ballet begins with Tchaikovsky’s classic SWAN LAKE, October 30–November 2, at Symphony Hall, the first time since 2009 that Ballet Arizona has danced this quintessential work by the Russian master.
Also performing at Symphony Hall is Arizona Opera. “There is something for everyone in this amazing season: five operas presented in six languages, romance and intrigue, fantasy and farce,” says Ryan Taylor, General Director.

Jim Ward, president and CEO of The Phoenix Symphony, is anticipating this season’s opening night and the inaugural performance of Tito Muñoz, the orchestra’s new Virginia G. Piper Music Director. On September 19 and 20, Maestro Muñoz will lead The Phoenix Symphony, the Phoenix Symphony Chorus and the Phoenix Boys Choir in Orff’s powerful CARMINA BURANA and Stravinsky’s magical FIREBIRD SUITE. The Thursday evening THE SOUND OF SPEED precedes the Phoenix International Raceway NASCAR race the following Sunday. Emceed by “The Dukes of Hazzard” star, Tom Wopat, the evening concert will feature an original automotive-inspired world-premiere musical work by Larry Blank of Los Angeles, with racing audiovisuals, including classic movie clips. The opera was created by director and writer Leonard Foglia and José “Pepe” Martínez, who served as music director for Mariachi Vargas from 1975 until his retirement earlier this year. CRUZAR LA CARA DE LA LUNA’S music reflects Martínez’s signature rapid violin ricochets and the mariachi styles of ranchera and boleros. Martínez was also influenced by 20th century classical Mexican composer José Pablo Moncayo, who wrote the famously rhythmic HUAPANGO and the opera LA MULATA DE CÓRDOBA. In Spanish and English, Martínez and Foglia weave 15 songs into an emotionally potent 80-minute opera, telling a multi-generational story of immigration between Mexico and America with flashbacks. They also use the metaphor of monarch butterfly migration, says Mariachi Vargas violinist José “Pepe” Martínez Perez, Jr., the composer’s son. “They travel for a better situation, like the butterflies … a 11

ASU GAMMAGE CELEBRATES 50 YEARS In 1957, ASU past President Grady Gammage had a vision to create a distinct university auditorium on the campus of Arizona State University. He called on famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright to assist with the project. During a tour of the campus, Wright said, “The structure should be circular in design, with outstretched arms, saying ‘Welcome to Arizona!’” Wright worked on the sketches for the building during the last two years of his life. Neither Wright nor Gammage lived to see the transformation of the blueprints. In 1962, Grady Gammage, Jr. turned the first shovel of dirt at the official groundbreaking. ASU Gammage is the only public building in Arizona designed by Wright. The 3,000-seat performance hall offers three levels of seating. ASU Gammage celebrated its grand opening on September 18, 1964. Under the baton of legendary conductor Eugene Ormandy, The Philadelphia Orchestra filled the hall with a history making first performance. including B.B. King, Neil Diamond, Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, Elton John, Mary J. Blige and Billy Crystal. Broadway, dance and classical music all have been popular during its 50 year history. ASU Gammage hosted the 2004 presidential debate and has presented lectures and symposiums featuring the world’s most prominent scientists, authors, dignitaries and scholars, including Stephen Hawking, Elie Wiesel and Maya Angelou. When Colleen Jennings-Roggensack took the helm as executive director in 1992, she established the mission of Connecting CommunitiesTM. This allows Gammage to go beyond its doors to change lives for the better and make a difference in our community through the shared experience of the arts. Along with its mission, Cultural Participation programs were created that take artists’ work into classrooms and community organizations, so people of all ages and backgrounds can reap the benefits of the arts. students opportunities to experience the arts through residencies, teacher development workshops and curriculum based programs that meet state education standards. ASU Gammage brings artist-mentors to Valley schools to work with teachers on integrating arts into mathematics, social studies, language arts and science lessons. The Desert Schools Broadway Across America – Arizona series is a leading economic engine and has brought in nearly $1 billion in economic impact to the Valley in the past 20 years. To ensure ASU Gammage remains a Valley icon for another 50 years, a 50th Anniversary Advisory Board has been established to work with the staff to help secure future improvements at ASU Gammage. Frank Lloyd Wright’s widow, Olgivanna, exclaimed that Gammage would be significant for centuries to come. “If this building is maintained, it will remain forever young.”
ASU GAMMAGE GIVES BACK ASU Gammage fulfills its mission of Connecting CommunitiesTM each day, but during its 50th Anniversary year, the organization wants to do even more and has launched its 50 Things campaign. ASU Gammage will give back through 50 different service projects within the community. 50 Things will include shoe, coat, food and book drives, including additional opportunities for people to attend a performance who would never be able to experience live theater. “We are so excited to be celebrating our 50th Anniversary, but ASU Gammage’s success would not have been possible without the support of our patrons and community partners. Now is another chance to say thank you and to give back,” says Colleen Jennings-Roggensack. If you would like to learn more about 50 Things or to get involved, please contact press@asugammage.com

A NEW CHANDELIER BY CAMERON MACINTOSH It’s almost 30 years since my first acquaintance with the Phantom. One cold February morning in 1984 while I was soaking myself in a long hot bath, Andrew Lloyd Webber telephoned me to gossip. He dropped into the conversation the idea of making a musical out of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. Even in my prune-like condition, I recognized Andrew had come up with another great idea.
During its almost 30 years, PHANTOM has become the most phenomenal success of all time, breaking Box Office records worldwide in countless sell-out productions. Since 1986, only the original version has been presented around the world (with the exception of Poland and Hungary, which were non-replica productions) and its brilliant design by
We screened copies of the 1925 Lon Chaney silent movie and the later wartime version with Claude Rains as the Phantom. Though very enjoyable, neither one made us shout “Eureka!” So we managed to find a copy of the novel by Gaston Leroux, which was out of print, and decided that we preferred that original storyline. The original production went into rehearsal in London on August 18, 1986. Director Hal Prince and choreographer Gillian Lynne assembled a wonderful cast, and after several weeks of exhilarating mayhem, PHANTOM opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on October 9 and immediately proceeded to become one of London’s greatest musical hits. Eighteen months later our trio of original stars – Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman and Steve Barton – opened to rapturous applause on Broadway where the show is still running triumphantly at the Majestic Theatre making it the longestrunning musical in Broadway history. 18

Maria Björnson has become synonymous with Andrew’s sensational score. Just before Maria died at a tragically early age, she and I had started discussing a different set design, one that would do more to contrast the Phantom’s darker backstage world with that of the traditional opera world onstage. Andrew agreed with my proposal, that it was time to give PHANTOM a fresh look, so in 2008 I approached theatre and opera designer Paul Brown to see if he was interested in taking over the baton from Maria to bring his own style and vision to our notion. It turned out that Maria had a special place in Paul’s life, as at the beginning of his career he had been a young assistant to her at the Royal Opera House. The result of Paul’s long-developed ideas for this project—which took a hiatus while Andrew produced LOVE NEVER DIES—is a new version of PHANTOM that uses a more visceral dramatic approach to create a visual feast, giving audiences the chance to see their favorite musical all over again through new eyes. Putting together the rest of the new creative team for this PHANTOM, following in the footsteps of Hal Prince and Gillian Lynne, was a daunting but invigorating task. Joining Paul Brown, my choice of director was always going to be Laurence Connor, who I first met when he became the Associate Director on the London production of PHANTOM. Now in its 67th year, The Phoenix Symphony welcomes its 11th Music Director. Tito Muñoz is increasingly recognized as one of the most gifted and versatile conductors of his generation. An accomplished violinist, Muñoz began his musical training in the Juilliard School's Music Advancement Program. He attended the “famed” Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art, as well as the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen where he studied with David Zinman, Murry Sidlin and Leonard Slatkin. He was the winner of Aspen Music Festival's 2005 Robert J. Harth Conductor Prize and the 2006 Aspen Conducting Prize.
Orchestra. That same year, he made his Cleveland Orchestra debut at the Blossom Music Festival. He then served for three years as Assistant Conductor and maintains a close relationship with The Cleveland Orchestra where he has returned to conduct annually. Most recently, Muñoz served as Music Director of the Opéra National de Lorraine and the Orchestre symphonique et lyrique de Nancy in France before taking the podium with The Phoenix Symphony.
After a nearly three year search, Tito Muñoz rose as the leading candidate from a global conductor search for three primary reasons. First of all, Maestro Muñoz has created magic on stage and unparalleled chemistry with our musicians. Secondly, Tito embraces The Phoenix Symphony’s mission and vision of being the Art’s leader in the revitalization of Arizona, in particular our groundbreaking Educational and Health and Wellness Programs. Lastly, Tito comes to Phoenix with the artistic pedigree and experience to advance innovative and stimulating Muñoz made his professional conducting programming while embracing the rich debut in 2006 with the National Symphony history of the orchestral art form.

ACT ONE
WHO WILL BE SITTING IN YOUR SEAT? You are comfortably settled in your seat, reading the program while awaiting the performance. Fast forward 30-plus years to the same seat, in the same theater ... who will be sitting in your seat? Who will be reading the program until the lights begin to dim and the curtain rises? It is the children of today, just like the ones in these photos, who will hopefully be there. When children are exposed to and learn about the arts at an early age, they have a greater chance of becoming arts patrons as adults. Funding for arts education in public schools has dwindled to almost nothing in Arizona, particularly in Title 1 schools.
42
Act One is helping make memorable arts learning experiences possible and you can help! Act One educational arts field trips provide K-12 students attending Title 1 schools with tickets, educational materials and transportation to a performance; thus making the field trip a reality for schools that never have the resources for basic arts exposure for their students. Since launching in the fall of 2011, Act One has brought more than 50,000 students from Title 1 schools to live performing arts educational field trips! Learn more, get involved and make a contribution. Visit www.act1az.org. Who knows? A student who participates in an Act One field trip today just might someday be sitting in your seat! In March, Phoenix Theatre will host their 17th Annual Hormel Festival of New Plays and Musicals, two weeks that foster the development of new works and contribute to the ever-expanding voice of the American theatre perspective. MARY POPPINS PROMISES TO BE THIS SEASON’S HOLIDAY SPECTACULAR! Phoenix Theatre brings the family-friendly classic to the stage November 19 - December 28. “My goal with this production is to make the ordinary things seem extraordinary. This show is all about the power of imagination and allowing yourself to see things through the eyes of a child,” says Barnard. Kaitlynn Kleinman, a star on several Valley stages takes on the title role. Barnard believes her incredible charisma and beautiful soprano are a perfect fit for this iconic role. Toby Yatso, Phoenix Theatre’s artist-in-residence will be playing the role of Bert. Yatso has dazzled Valley audiences in shows like AVENUE Q, THE 39 STEPS and SPAMALOT. His impeccable comedic timing and outstanding musical prowess always make for a spot-on, delightful performance. Rounding out the cast is a mix of newcomers and Phoenix Theatre veterans. Barnard noted that several members of the ensemble have performed leading roles for Phoenix Theatre, which speaks volumes about the strength of this incredible cast. In addition to Mary, Bert and the familiar characters you know and love, Phoenix Theatre’s production will feature astounding visual effects with the title character flying through the air, Bert tap46

sequence is bound to amaze. The vibrant staging, colorful costumes and sets, stunning special effects and compelling storytelling combine for an experience that promises to impress. The nostalgic, yet contemporary MARY POPPINS is truly the “can’t-miss” event of the holiday season! The Wizard of Oz is one of the most beloved films of the 20th century. Its talented star, Judy Garland quickly became, and remained, a household name up until her tragic death in 1969. END OF THE RAINBOW, a contemporary musical drama by Peter Quilter, chronicles the final six months of her life. The show debuted on Broadway in 2012 and quickly became a critical success. Phoenix Theatre’s production of the poignant drama will be staged in their Hormel Black Box Theatre April 29 - May 17. Producing Artistic Director Michael Barnard feels this intimate space will be perfect for the intense nature of the show. “Setting this show in the Hormel Black Box Theatre lets the audience feel like they are at one of Judy Garland’s final concerts. It will create a memorable connection for the cast and those in attendance,” he said. The small cast of only three featured performers portray Judy Garland, Mickey Deans, her manager and then-fiancé, and Anthony, her devoted English pianist. Set in 1968 London, we relive her final performances at The Talk of the Town, a London nightclub. Garland’s final months were marred by her life-long struggle with drug and alcohol addiction. In END OF THE RAINBOW, these demons are thrust into the limelight and create explosive conflicts between the central characters. At the helm of this emotional theatre experience is renowned director Karla Koskinen. Koskinen previously directed THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA for Phoenix Theatre in 2010 and won the ariZoni Award for Outstanding Direction for her work on that production. “I think this is a great piece for Karla. She’s a very sensitive, caring director and will bring an incredible insight and understanding to this tragic story,” ON STAGE • SEASON PREVIEW 2014-2015
Barnard said. END OF THE RAINBOW lifts the veil on one of entertainment’s most iconic performers and reveals the heartbreaking torment she desperately tried to hide in her final months. With tour-de-force musical performances, sharp dialogue and a story that will leave you wondering until the final moments, END OF THE RAINBOW is sure to be an impressive experience in a packed Valley theatre season. Hailed as “one of most hilarious shows” in British theatre history and nominated for seven 2012 Tony ® Awards, Richard Bean’s ONE MAN, TWO GUVNORS closed the season and promises to be a surefire summer hit at Phoenix Theatre! Filled with laugh-out-loud physical comedy, a delightful score, slapstick and smart one-liners, this unique play follows Francis Henshall, who takes the dubious position as guardian of Roscoe Crabbe, a small-time East End hoodlum. When Francis takes a second job minding Stanley Stubbers, another fishy criminal hiding from the police, he employs elaborate shenanigans to keep his two guvnors apart.
