MEET THE TEAM RBLI’s Assessment Team give you the tools to a successful career
due to Edward’s enthusiasm that what was planned to be a small one-page newsletter, has grown in to the glossy publication you see before you.
Welcome to the first issue of RBLI’s Equip newsletter, detailing the latest news on our range of workplace assessment and support services. With employers across the UK finding themselves having to react to an evolving job market as well as ever-changing legislation around health at work, RBLI is here to provide a range of services designed to maximise employee wellbeing. What can you expect from Equip? We have some of the best assessors in the country on-board to provide advice on the latest products, industry news and practical guidance on getting the most from your work-space. This issue focuses on an introduction to our fantastic team, including the ever-vocal Edward Tidbury and his band of ergonomists to the stars. Edward has relished this opportunity to reach a wider audience for his occasionally controversial viewpoints, so you have been warned. It was
As an independent provider of assessments, we also have a large number of cutting-edge equipment and software suppliers on-hand to provide guidance on the very latest developments in the ergonomic and technical fields, as featured in our Supplier Focus section which can be found starting on page 6. In fact, a huge thank you is due to everybody that has taken the time to contribute to this launch issue; particularly the suppliers and Job Centre Plus assessors who, after incessant persuasion (and offers of confectionary) from our team, sent us some fantastic features. As Equip develops we are keen to cover as many of our partners and suppliers as possible, so if you have any news stories or events please let us know via the details below. There may also be advertising opportunities for those of you looking to make an even bigger impact! That’s about it from me, we all hope that you find your copy of Equip useful, even if it is just as a coaster or an impromptu notepad! Phil Barros - Editor

“RBLI has helped me realise that I have got a lot more to offer than I originally thought”
Stuart Batts - RBLI Beneficiary
Anne’s Story Anne had been recently diagnosed with Diabetic Retinopathy and Macular Oedema, which had a sudden onset. Anne has recently returned to work and she identified that her main difficulties were accessing the computer and telephone, and reading printed material. In addition it was noted that she had also adopted poor posture from leaning forward to see the screen. Proposed solutions were discussed with a representative from Anne’s company’s IT department. During the assessment a number of changes were able to be made immediately including enlarging the font and changing the contrast to help Anne to see the screen better, and using shortcut keys to reduce mouse navigation. Resources such as an enlarged character keyboard, hand magnifiers and a large key telephone were recommended
to support Anne’s existing vision and a telephone headset to enable a hands free option to make notes or use a magnifier whilst making or receiving calls. Anne was also advised regarding good posture, including moving the screen nearer to reduce risk of injury to her spine through leaning forwards.
Face to Face - RBLI’s Daniel Butler After joining the RBLI Manchester assessment team in January 2009, Daniel has taken the huge step of moving 250 miles across the country to be at the forefront of Access to Work delivery in the South East. This is just one example of Daniel’s commitment to delivery, which recently earned him RBLI Employee of the Year. Q: What did you do before joining RBLI? I attended Coventry University studying Physiotherapy Q: What geographical area do you currently cover? Sussex, Surrey and London Q: Given your geographical area where do you see the highest concentration of assessments? Where there are a high percentage of offices and where people have heard about Access to Work.... On this basis it would be the outskirts of London - Surrey Q: What are the most positive challenges that you encounter when you undertake an assessment? Building a rapport with the client so they ‘buy into’ the scheme the RBLI way and that there are solutions available to help Q: What is your favourite part about delivering holistic assessments? No one case is the same! Q: How do you feel about working in a new assessment area? I was tempted down on the (false) promise of sunshine!!! Q: What are your thoughts about the targets set for RBLI assessments? On paper very fair – in reality challenging due to the nature of the people we assess, the geographical area, day to day issues that may arise such as traffic and train delays and relying on external suppliers. However, there is a reason we have set these targets.....because we can do it and it has been done before!!!
Dan proudly receiving his Employee of the Year award from RBLI CEO Steve Sherry Q: How do you find working to meet the 10 day turnaround times? There are a number of elements which can determine whether you hit the turnaround deadline, both internal and external. If everything runs to plan then there should not really be a problem. However, there are issues that can arise, so it is being flexible, prioritising and understanding the needs of the client. Q: How did you feel about being approached by Edward to do this article? I was pleased I was given the opportunity to showcase my thoughts and opinions. Q: What car do you drive (as a car buff Edward always wants us to put this in)? Vauxhall Corsa Q: We ask this of everybody, what’s your favourite food? My mum’s
Bill’s story Bill had experienced a stroke last year which had left him with cognition issues affecting his memory, organisation, sequencing and planning skills. Bill informed his assessor he was feeling anxious and exhausted since his return to work and was finding it difficult to cope. He was unable to complete deadlines in the allocated time, and felt he was letting his colleagues down by asking for help. During his RBLI assessment, initial guidance helped Bill to organise some of his work on the computer, such as creating folders for desktop and mailbox items and using a colour-coded system for diary entries and emails. This would enable him to locate items more quickly and
efficiently and provide visual cues for planning his diary and organising meetings. In addition, voice activated software and a Dictaphone were recommended to help him to instantly record information and reduce the amount of time spent typing reports. Bill was also provided with information on coping strategies for managing fatigue and anxiety, including the importance of taking regular breaks. Focus on: Back Care Solutions Back Care Solutions was set up in 2003 by John Kirkham. Originally working out of his home the company grew and has relocated three times to cope with the growing demand and the increasing stock levels. From the beginning it has been important that Back Care Solutions offer the best service and be able to supply the greatest range of equipment. Working closely with the large manufacturers of ergonomic chairs including Rh, Ergochair, BMA, and Hag, all of Backcare Solutions’ technicians and technical support have training with these manufacturers to ensure they get the most out of the products. There are now 14 members of staff with many meeting customers and clients face to face, covering a large and varied customer base from Government Departments to individuals to multinational companies. In many cases
the end user requires a bespoke solution and they have provided special sized seats or custombuilt accessories such as seat cut outs, arm rests or neck rests. Although resellers, Back Care Solutions has designed it’s own seating solutions such as the BC One and Two chairs and the Ergo Glide and Nimble mobility chairs. These have been built with sound ergonomic principles behind them to compete in an already competitive market.
Posturite proud to work with RBLI For more than 21 years, East Sussex-based Posturite Ltd has been at the forefront of developments to enable office workers overcome health issues related to their working conditions. As one of Britain’s leading providers of ergonomic products and equipment for the workplace, Posturite has helped thousands of people to overcome debilitating musculoskeletal conditions especially back and upper limb disorders and remain productive. For some time, this has included working with RBLI to help fulfil our remit to support the employment of people with disabilities or long-term health needs via independent assessments or government-backed programmes such as Access to Work. Posturite holds a near 60% share of the UK market for ‘curative’ ergonomic products – it is pleased to be able to provide RBLI’s own team of workplace assessors with ongoing support, advice and training on developments in the ergonomics industry. It also collaborates with the team to offer suggestions on products and set-ups that may help individuals to overcome work-related health issues. Posturite CEO Ian Fletcher-Price said: “We are proud of our long association with RBLI and delighted to continue to
support them in their invaluable work. “Like us, their concern is equipping people with the tools and support mechanisms to enable them to sustain employment despite suffering health issues. So we’re happy to help them in any way we can.” Ian has personal experience of the health hazards that can face desk-bound workers. He formed the company in 1991 after quitting the City because of a work-related neck injury. Posturite’s innovative ergonomic solutions are to be found in the offices of many of Britain’s biggest companies and organisations - the BBC, HSBC, City of London Police, Barclays, Royal & Sun Alliance, American Express and IBM to name but a few – as well as in scores of small and medium sized enterprises. Ian admits that sometimes he has to pinch himself at just how far the company has come since he designed its first product – an adjustable writing slope – to help solve his own health problem. The Posturite board, the prototype of which Ian built in his mother’s garden shed, is still one of the company’s biggest-selling products. You can find out more about Posturite, its products and services at www.posturite.co.uk or by calling 0845 345 0010.

Disability focus: Dyslexia David Bryan, therapist, counsellor and now author, shares his experiences with Dyslexia: “When I was a child I always had problems with reading and writing. If anyone saw me actually putting pen to paper I was so embarrassed as I knew I couldn’t write quickly like the other children.” “When I was finally diagnosed with Dyslexia - I could finally see I wasn’t slow at all. I had lots of ideas in my head of things I wanted to study and things I wanted to do with my life. It was explained that dyslexia was a recognised disability and that with the right adjustments it was completely possible for me lead a different way of life - until this moment I had always avoided jobs that had anything to do with reading, form filling or paperwork in general.” “I had an amazing assessment that was provided by Access to Work. The assessor himself was Dyslexic and it was the first time I was able to fully discuss my dyslexia. He was very professional and had a great understanding of the subject. He helped me understand more about my ways of learning and understanding. He recommended speech recognition and advised that with the right equipment I could have perfectly adequate literacy skills.” “Hands-Free Computing provided me with a speech recognition package and I have never looked back. I had three days training and was flabbergasted at the professional results I could get without touching a keyboard.”
“These new found skills inspired me to start writing my first book. I was convinced I could help many more sufferers by writing down my methodology, thoughts and intuitions. Without the speech recognition software and the training I received, I couldn’t have dreamed of writing a book. It has gone so well that I am planning to write at least 10 more!” “I would never have dreamt in a million years that my name and the word author would ever go together in the same sentence. I have often said to my clients not to let go of their dreams - I am living proof they can come true.”
Hands Free Computing’s Client Relationship Team was established three years ago to support the needs of its diverse range of business customers – from sole traders right through to large national organisations. The team works with key departments within organisations, such as Equality & Inclusion, Learning & Development, Occupational Health & IT. Their aim is to raise the awareness of equipment and services that are available to help employees with a physical or learning disability.
RBLI’s Janet Gardner in the South West “I am an Occupational Therapist with over 28 years clinical experience working in a variety of settings within the public and private sectors, including hospitals, social services, primary care trusts and private practice. I have particular expertise in disability equipment, access and ergonomics in the workplace, specialist seating, mobility and adaptations. The majority of my work for the last 10 years has been with Access to Work, carrying out workplace assessments, which I really enjoy. “ “I have lived in the West Country all my life and what a great place it is to live and work. I cover Devon, Dorset and Cornwall, together with much of Somerset for RBLI, undertaking Access to Work assessments. This is a very large patch that involves a lot of driving. Devon alone covers 2,700 square miles and has more roads (covering nearly 10,000 miles) than any other UK county.” “Living centrally in the patch is great, but with over 2 hours to reach the very tip of Cornwall in the West and over 2 hours to get to Bournemouth in the East of Dorset, some days have more driving than assessments!
Additionally, some parts of the area are quite inaccessible in terms of main roads and the South West being a major holiday destination brings additional challenges during the summer, with a one-hour drive doubling due to the additional traffic generated.”
Meet the Job Centre Plus Manager In the second of our South West focused Job Centre Plus interviews we catch up with Regional Manager Chris Mason. Q: Why did you join the Access to Work team? I joined the Access to Work team two and a half years ago as I needed a new challenge that had greater customer focus than the previous telephony team role I was in at the time. Q: Have you always worked for JCP? I started in 1975 when the department was called DHSS. The ‘H’ was quickly removed and we then became Benefits Agency. I also worked for the Ministry Of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food before returning to work at the Disablement Benefit Centre in 2000. I’ve worked as an NVQ assessor, a Financial & Benefits Visiting Officer in the Pension Service and as a Job Centre Advisor. You could say I’ve had a varied career within DWP. Q: How many staff are you responsible for in the SouthWest? We have a team of 12. Q: What’s the area that you cover? I have an adviser in Liskeard, Brixham, Bideford, Swindon and Stourbridge Job Centres, 2 advisors in Bournemouth and High Wycombe Job Centre and 3 advisers in Yate Job Centre. Q: As a manager, what are your biggest challenges given the size of the area? My biggest challenge is predominately the size of the area I manage. Trying to keep in touch with my advisors, make them feel like a team and keep communication channels open, ensuring they are all up to date with any changes or messages as they occur. Q: Where do you see most of your team’s referrals coming from, geographically? Wherever possible the allocations team, allocate locally to advisors based in the region the customer lives. As my team deals with Pan Disability applications, they can deal with applications from anywhere in the country. Q: Where do you see most of your referrals coming from in terms of disability or health needs? As a Pan Disability team we have noticed an increase in applications from customers with Dyslexia. Access to Work has Disability-focused teams dealing with the hearing impaired, visually impaired and mental health impairment, so my team will not deal with these disabilities unless they are considered to be a secondary disability. Q: With the new contract, what were your feelings about having a new provider on board doing your assessments? The South West had a prime contractor, so we hoped that dealing with 3 contractors would provide us with the same level of service.
Q: Do you see referrals for assessments increasing in the next six months? Yes, as following the Sayce Review, Access to Work is hoping to reach more Disabled people, and assist them in getting back to work, into work or to remain in work. Q: How would that impact on your current team members? An impending increase in applications will certainly require an increased head count. Q: How did you feel about being approached by Edward to do this article? I was very happy to take part in Equip, but also gained my senior managers approval. Q: What car do you drive? Mazda MX5 Q: What’s your favourite food? Chips.

RBLI Employee of the Month awards The RBLI assessment team have recently scooped a number of internal employee awards, demonstrating the skills and commitment they have shown in the months since the new Access to Work contract areas were awarded. Not content with winning Employee of the Month in June, Dan Butler took home the elusive Employee of the Year award for 2011 to add to his trophy cabinet. Dan was joined at the ceremony by our own Edward Tidbury, who won the Chief Executive’s Special Recognition award for his contribution to external relations. Tracey Johnson receiving her well deserved Employee of the Month award from RBLI’s CEO Steve Sherry
Finally, Tracey Johnson brought in a slightly late January Employee of the Month gold for her Olympian effort in conducting workplace assessments.
Face to Face - RBLI’s Frank Gilbert Seven months into his tenure at RBLI, Frank has already proven himself to be our go-to technical guru and expert on all things IT-related. The floor is yours Frank: Q: How long have you been delivering Access to Work assessments? Nearly 5 years Q: What did you do before delivered assessments? Taught adults with disabilities how to use IT to expand their horizons, contact family, etc. IT Manager of an insurance company and an accounts firm before I decided to do something useful with my life! Analyst/programmer. Many other things too numerous to list in detail including restaurant owner, DJ, marketing manager... Q: What geographical area do you currently cover? London, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire, occasionally Dorset and Berkshire, and anywhere else I’m asked to go! Q: Given your geographical area where do you see the highest concentration of assessments outside of London? Southampton, Winchester, Basingstoke area. Q: What are the most positive challenges that you encounter when you undertake an assessment? Putting the client at ease, reducing any scepticism, helping them to see a positive future. Q: What is your favourite part about delivering holistic assessments? A smiling face at the end of the assessment; feeling I’ve done something useful, enabling, supportive and even possibly life-changing.
Q: How easy do you find it to meet the 10 day turnaround times? Now I have a system in place, it’s getting easier, but I need to be prepared to burn the midnight oil occasionally. It’s almost a matter of honour to me, and disappointing when circumstances occasionally prevent me from getting a report in on time. Q: How did you feel about being approached by your Manager to do this article? If it helps others to understand how useful our job and organisation can be to those who need support, then it’s a good thing to do. Q: What car do you drive ? Kia Rio 1.5 CRDi turbo diesel hatchback. Q: We ask this of everybody, what’s your favourite food? Lobster (I’m not cheap!)
“Welcome one and all to the very first ‘Ask Edward’ column in the hallowed pages of RBLI’s ‘Equip’ newsletter. I’m often asked about the intricacies and advantages of Workplace Assessments, and I thought it only fair to share my knowledge with you, our valued readers. So sit back, pour a glass of your preferred tipple and indulge yourself in this cornucopia of information - and if you have a query relating to the world of health and wellbeing at work, then drop me a line.” - Edward Dear Edward, I have recently returned to work following a road traffic accident, and I am having difficulty in using the desk equipment which I have always utilised for my role. After discussions with my employer, we both feel that a workplace assessment would be the best route to finding a solution but company resources are limited. Would there be any funding or support available? Will, Bognor Regis Hi Will, thanks for getting in touch. You are absolutely right in thinking that an assessment would be the best means of identifying alternative methods of performing your duties. You will be pleased to know that there may well be support available from the government’s Access to Work programme, depending on your circumstances. Access to Work funding is available for most paid employment and the South of England, including sunny Bognor Regis, the service is provided by us at RBLI. For more information on Access to Work and the funding available, you should contact your local Job Centre Plus as soon as possible. Edward Dear Edward, as a business owner that actively employs staff with health conditions or disabilities, I am often asked if we should be implementing a workplace assessment procedure. This is something that I would consider, but really need to know what the advantages would be from a business perspective. What benefits would an employer see after an assessment? Nicole, Exeter Hi Nicole, this is actually one of the most common questions that I am asked. Often, by demonstrating a commitment to employee health and wellbeing, businesses can see immediate improvements in staff retention, morale and productivity; as well as a reduction in absences. Ultimately, employers can reduce personnel costs caused by long-
term health conditions and benefit from increased output by their staff. Edward Dear Edward, I am due to have an assessment soon and was wondering how the equipment would be selected. Are there particular suppliers that have to be used? Emma, Bristol Hi Emma, most independent assessors should base their recommendations on your particular requirements and budget. We work with a large number of recognised companies to ensure the products we advise are the most suitable. If an assessor is aligned to one particular supplier, then I would say that it is best to look elsewhere for an honest opinion. Edward Dear Edward, I was recently late for an assessment due to my car not starting. I was able to call the assessor to warn them and explained that my Subaru had started perfectly earlier in the day, but unfortunately they had another assessment to undertake and could not stay too much longer. I am still very keen to have my workstation assessed, can you help? Peter, Colchester Hi Peter, many Subaru models can often suffer from warm starting problems ultimately caused by a faulty Crank Angle sensor. Luckily, the sensor itself is relatively easily to replace being located at the very front of the engine casing, but be aware that a new part can be relatively expensive. Hope this helps! Edward
