Transforming Rehabilitation with RBLI
1.1 O v e rv ie w Royal British Legion Industries (RBLI) is a registered charity which operates on a commercial basis through its Social Enterprises. It also delivers a range of business activities providing Government funded services. Stemming from its roots are the services it delivers to Armed Forces communities; services which have proved to be eminently transferrable to other customer groups, such as those with disabilities and health conditions and long term unemployed and which have formed the key component of RBLI’s long standing success in supporting individuals to achieve sustainable outcomes, whatever form these may take.
1.2 O u r Ex p e rie n c e RBLI has gained an extensive reputation for its experience and expertise in supporting individuals through transition and onto successful outcomes. This has been achieved over many decades through developing an in depth understanding of transition and resettlement and providing a range of services aimed to support individuals from institution to independence. A key focus of our work has been with early service leavers; the profile of an early service leaver is not dissimilar to that of many individuals engaged in the criminal justice system. Most come from dysfunctional family backgrounds, areas of high deprivation and have low levels of basic skills; a career in the military can often be the deterrent to engaging in criminal activity for this cohort.
1.3 O u r S u c c e ss Our success in working with a military cohort has been based on delivering timely, practical and effective interventions linked to personal requirements. The services we provide to individuals, whether directly or through our established partner networks, are informed by an in depth and realistic assessment which focuses on practical and achievable outcomes. This success has been translated across to a range of customer groups, including those engaged with the criminal justice system. RBLI is now delivering LifeWorks programmes to those about to be released, supporting them through transition and post release1
1 Harper G and Chitty C, 2005, “The Impact of Corrections on Re-Offending: A Review of What Works Home Office Research 291 states that there is strong evidence to support that the provision of practical support in prison is unlikely to have a lasting impact on the risk of re-offending unless it continues upon release.

LifeWorks: Coaching For Change Workshop
The RBLI Coaching for Change Workshop explores the process of transition, helping delegates to understand the stages of transition, identify how these impact them personally and establish coping strategies. It enables individuals to take control of their own journey, focus on solutions, establish realistic goals and identify how they will achieve these. The Coaching for Change Workshop improves confidence, increases self esteem and reduces resistance to advice and guidance, motivating individuals to achieve positive outcomes and overcome limiting beliefs and obstacles.
2
Resettlement Planning & Mentoring
Resettlement and Action Plans underpin individual journeys, encourage ownership and promote empowerment. RBLI undertakes a diagnostic assessment to inform planning ensuring that a robust and realistic plan is set out. Whilst independence linked to employment remains the ultimate goal, any action planning will incorporate peripheral factors such as housing, health and skills.

LifeWorks: Employability Skills & Training
The Employability Skills & Training element of LifeWorks aims to equip individuals with the tools required to secure and sustain work. Each individual’s programme will be informed by the vocational assessment and action plan comprising a combination of modules which include, but are not limited to: • The value of work • How to write a winning CV • How to search, find and apply for jobs • How to be successful at interview We may also include personal presentation, networking and communication skills.
5
RBLI Social Enterprise Projects
RBLI operates a range of Social Enterprise projects which are used to provide training, work experience and permanent employment opportunities. These include the VICTOR Project, which provides up to 12 months employment and training in grounds maintenance and related work and skills and is already proving effective in reducing re-offending rates in project participants. We can also offer opportunities in manufacturing, light assembly, property maintenance, hospitality and care, IT and administration.
6
Personal Outcome
Each individual will work towards a personal outcome linked to independence and reducing the risk of re-offending. Whilst in the majority of circumstances this will be work related, we recognise that for some, employment may not be the most realistic option for a successful transition and resettlement. The outcome may take a number of forms, for example it may be further education or training or for those with a significant mental health condition it may be a secure. safe living environment and health related benefits.
7
Sustained Outcome
The personal outcome is sustained when this has prevented the individual from re-offending.
