CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S MESSAGE Where has the first half of 2014 gone? I have been bowled over by the energy and enthusiasm of all staff and volunteers in RBLI as we work together to improve the lives of others.

I HAVE BEEN BOWLED OVER BY THE ENERGY AND ENTHUSIASM OF ALL STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS The Friends of RBLI have gone from strength to strength under the leadership of Penny Dyson. This success is evidenced in the shape of £200,000 already raised for the Garden of Honour and work already started with a completion date of October 2014. The formal V.V.I.P opening of the Garden of Honour will be next spring and this will be another grand day for RBLI.

THE FORMAL V.V.I.P OPENING OF THE GARDEN OF HONOUR... WILL BE ANOTHER GRAND DAY FOR RBLI The spirit of volunteering spreads much wider than the Friends of RBLI and the

Friends of Gavin Astor House. Many of us and our families enjoyed the successfully combined Summer Fayre and staff BBQ and saw just how much can be achieved when we all pull together to improve lives by making things special. We will have a Volunteers Coordinator in post from September to build on the wonderful support seen in the last 6 months. Another great project for us this year is the K’NEX build of the land speed record attempt vehicle, Bloodhound SSC. Working with both Bloodhound and K’NEX, we hope to break the World Record for the largest construction model ever, so make sure you take a look at it while it’s in the factory!

OUR MODERNISATION AND GROWTH PROGRAMME IS ON TARGET WITH 20% GROWTH IN REVENUES Our modernisation and growth programme is on target with 20% growth in revenues last year and a similar trend this year. This only happens when all our people are performing to high standards and our customers value our products and services. Well done to everyone for continuing to implement the sort of changes needed to sustain this Charity today and into the future.

350,000+ PIECES OF K’NEX 1000 MILES PER HOUR 2 WORLD RECORD ATTEMPTS

It’s fair to say that the RBLI Fulfilment Team have an expertise in K’NEX. Past projects have included a giant K’NEX Angry Bird, a K’NEX Monster Truck to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of K’NEX, and a K’NEX Thomas the Tank Engine. This year, our team are taking on their biggest challenge yet, by attempting to beat the World Record for the largest K’NEX structure ever! The project: a lifesize K’NEX replica of the BLOODHOUND SSC, which next year will attempt to become the holder of the World Land Speed Record. Scheduled for completion

by September 2014, the resulting creation will be made of over 350,000 parts and will be 13.5 metres long. In order to replicate the smooth curves and angles of the real BLOODHOUND SSC, the internal structure will be made up of thousands of inter-connected K’NEX cubes, with an outer shell being formed of flexible sheets of interlocking K’NEX parts. The giant build was commissioned by the 1K Club to promote The BLOODHOUND Project, which aims to inspire children about science

The K’NEX build was designed by our Head of Fulfilment David Church, who says “This project is a great one, not only for the Fulfilment Team, but for all of RBLI. It allows us to showcase our fantastic specialist skills to the UK public.”

Due to the popularity of BLOODHOUND SSC, there is always plenty of merchandise being sent out to fans, and the Fulfilment Team at Leatherhead is now in charge of all of BLOODHOUND’s pick & pack activity, sending BLOODHOUND caps, t-shirts and more around the world! They have also been assembling and packaging scale models of the car, which can be purchased on the BLOODHOUND SSC website. In addition to this, our Print & Mail Team have been busy printing (and framing), a variety of certificates and signed photographs for BLOODHOUND.

K’NEX isn’t our only link to the BLOODHOUND Project however, as our Leatherhead Site are This project is not just a World Record Atnow working with BLOODHOUND on a variety tempt, it is a great example of RBLI’s teamof Fulfilment and Print & Mail activities. work, enthusiasm and range of skills.

OVER 80% OF LIFEWORKS DELEGATES IN WORK NEW HEAD OF LIFEWORKS, IAIN DOWNIE, EXPLAINS HOW THEY HAVE EXPANDED THIS YEAR “THE COURSE WAS BRILLIANT, INCREDIBLY MOTIVATIONAL” 6

It’s always nice to start with some good news! Since the first LifeWorks course in May 2011, 84% of those that have attended a course have started work or moved into full-time training; a superb result and strong evidence that the course really works. The team is now focused on developing the course so that we continue to deliver the very best combination of training and assessment to all of those that need it. Alongside the Core course, we have also continued to expand the LifeWorks Families Course to spouses and partners of serving members of the Armed Forces; feedback has been excellent and the team is making a difference. One lady said “The course was brilliant, incredibly motivational”... and I have to agree! For the future, our focus is on finding those that need our help and making sure that the message gets out there to Veterans’ case workers around the country. We are also really excited to have the opportunity to deliver LifeWorks at Castle Huntly Open Prison later this year, a chance to help some of those ‘harder to help’ Veterans in partnership with Poppy Scotland. In all, LifeWorks is going from strength to strength and the team is looking forward to another busy period!

2 RIDERS, 250 MILES, 3 DAYS

On 23rd May 2014, two cyclists from Kent, Wendy Emery and Andy Jones, set out from Pegasus Bridge on a three day cycle ride in which they would cover 250 miles and follow in the footsteps of British Forces from WW1 and WW2. Their aim: to raise money for the Garden of Honour. Interviewed after the ride, Wendy said, “The route was fantastic, I’m not a great historian but there were some amazing acts of sacrifice during both Wars. It was sad and humbling to see so many war graves, and it reminded us how brave our troops are.” After their arrival at the Menin Gate, Wendy and Andy laid a wreath at The Last Post Ceremony to remember the fallen in their families. “Laying the wreath was a proud moment - the whole experience at The Menin Gate is one to behold, very touching.”

CLAGUE’S DESIGN REVEALED TO PUBLIC THE GARDEN OF HONOUR WILL BE A NATIONAL FOCUS FOR REMEMBRANCE

The Designer for the Garden of Honour, Andrew Clague, of Kent-based firm Clague Architects, has now revealed the design for the garden. Complete with an area of reflection, a new bandstand and a memorial square, the Garden of Honour will be fully wheelchair accessible, allowing all of RBLI’s beneficiaries to visit. Andrew says, “We plan to establish the Garden of Honour as a national focus for Remembrance Day as well as a special place within the Royal British Legion Village. The new design will create a lively space against the backdrop of the wonderful 18th century listed wall of the old Walled Garden.”

RBLI SUPPORTS OFFENDERS INTO EMPLOYMENT

Here at RBLI, we help ex-servicemen and women wherever, whenever they have served. This could be those men and women injured during active service or a World War Two Veteran. This year, we’ve been expanding our Armed Forces support to another group, and have developed a new programme called VICTR, which aims to help ex-service offenders and ex-offenders from around the country towards sustainable employment. Developed in collaboration with Social Enterprise Blue Sky, who offer ex-offenders employment through a variety of contracts, VICTR focuses on early intervention, helping individuals prepare for their new life on Civvy Street. The objective is to help ex-service men and women achieve a successful future by working towards financial independence through employment. Tessa Kent, VICTR’s Armed Forces Programme Executive, says “By partnering with Social Enterprise Blue Sky, we’ve created a programme of support which can help individuals during resettlement on a timescale appropriate and personalised for them. No two sets of circumstances and no two individuals are the same, but we want everyone who comes through the programme to have the opportunity to gain the right skills, confidence and attitude to go into work”. Veterans who get involved with VICTR will also have the chance to undertake work experience and to carry out a 6 month employment opportunity with Blue Sky or even in RBLI’s own Social Enterprise. For those who need it, VICTR will even provide advice and support on welfare and housing, and there may be the opportunity for temporary accommodation. For ex-service offenders and exoffenders, our new VICTR programme is a chance to gain a life transforming opportunity - to move onto a successful future and away from the risk of re-offending.

SHADOW SECRETARY OF STATE FOR DEFENCE VISITS VERNON COAKER LEARNS ABOUT THE SUPPORT RBLI PROVIDES TO THE ARMED FORCES

On 28th April 2014, Vernon Coaker, the Shadow Secretary of State for Defence, came to visit RBLI. Given an overview of the range of support that RBLI provides to the Armed Forces community, as well as people affected by a disability, health condition or social welfare need, Mr Coaker also took a tour of RBLI’s Social Enterprise and spoke to some of the Veterans and other staff members who work there. The tour included an introduction to the employability support that RBLI provides to the Armed Forces community, including LifeWorks and LifeWorks Families courses as well as vocational assessments to all wounded, injured and sick military personnel.

COSTAIN INNOVATION DAY

On 30th April 2014, we held a visit from Costain where as an out of the office study day, they came and learnt about the work we do here at RBLI, both in the factory and around the village. Costain are one of the UK’s leading engineering solutions providers, delivering services to major blue-chip customers in a range of sectors, including Rail, Highways, Power, Airports, Water, Nuclear Process, Waste, Oil and Gas.

NEW GRAPHICS AREA INVESTMENT IN GRAPHICS AREA WILL ALLOW RBLI SIGNS TO FULFIL INCREASING DEMAND

BEFORE JOHN DIGGLE TELLS US ABOUT NEW MACHINERY 14

We have completed the first stage of our factory modernisation programme with the transformation of the RBLI Signs’ Graphics and Printing area. The investment will enable our Signs department to fulfil the increasing demand for high quality road, rail and commercial signage. The work on the Graphics Area was the first part of our ongoing enhancements to Social Enterprise. More improvements will continue to be made across the factory in future months, including the implementation of a new computer system, Factory Master, enabling increases in efficiency and capacity across the range of manufacturing activities that take place on the site.

AFTER The Wood Products Team will soon be getting a new pallet making machine to automate part of their pallet production, after a recent investment. The new machinery can manufacture pallets with just one operator at a rate of 75 per hour, complete with logo branding and automatic stacking. It is currently being built to our specification and should be with us during August.

Modernising does not just mean getting faster and more efficient, it means becoming more environmentally friendly, and that’s just what RBLI have been doing down in Wood Products. FULFILMENT TEAM HIRE THROUGH FAMILY FOCUS FAMILY FOCUS AIMS TO TURN AROUND FAMILIES’ LIVES “I’M REALLY ENJOYING LEARNING NEW SKILLS”

RBLI’s Family Focus scheme has seen a successful start since its launch in January. Designed as part of the DWP’s Troubled Families programme, it aims to help turn around the lives of families who are disadvantaged by social welfare needs or unemployment. At RBLI, we focus on helping families get into volunteer work, training or employment. We’ve even provided employment for one family in our Social Enterprise. After coming to Family Focus through Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, Polly and Dan were given support by Kev Rourke, our Family Focus Mentor, and undertook a programme of work experience in our Social Enterprise. Since their work experience, Dan and Polly have now both asked to become RBLI employees, and have settled in as part of the Fulfilment Team run by Kenny Kendrick. Dan is also working in RBLI Signs and says he is “really enjoying learning new skills” and that the programme has helped him in both “family and home life”. We wish Dan and Polly all the best and look forward to seeing them around the factory.

FROM FRUIT BINS TO SEATING Martin Easterby tells us about one of Wood Products’ new contracts: London-based mobile restaurant, Street Kitchen, had a problem - they could not find anyone to make new rustic seats and tables for their restaurants. One of their organic fruit suppliers, Mole End Farm, have been buying our fruit bins for a number of years and said that if anyone could help them it would be RBLI. They took a small number of our specially designed furniture to start with, but have since said they are so pleased with our work, they will continue to buy from us. 16

NEW DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS

This summer sees the end of an era for RBLI, as David Jessop, our Director of Operations, leaves us for a new role at The Newcastle College Group. David joined RBLI in 2001 as HR Manager and was promoted to Director of Operations and HR in 2002 before becoming the Director of all Operations across RBLI in 2011. We are sorry to see David go, but we wish him all the best for the future. Taking his place will be James Rudoni, previously the Director of Gardens for the Royal Horticultural Society, who says he is “delighted to be joining the team at RBLI”.

RBLI TALK TO LOCAL GOVERNMENT ABOUT SOCIAL VALUE

This July, a team led by RBLI’s Director of Commercial, Geoff Streetley, attended the Local Government Association Conference in Bournemouth, where they spoke to Local Government Chief Executives and Councillors about our Print & Mail Services and Sign Manufacturing. Under the tagline “Built by Britain’s Bravest” the team informed Local Government from across the country about the great work we do here at RBLI. The event, which was held over 3 days, also saw RBLI lead a workshop on Social Value at the launch of the LGA’s new National Procurement Strategy. Chaired by RBLI’s Associate Jonathan Shaw, the workshop was well attended and was a great finish to a successful conference. 17

GAVIN ASTOR HOUSE SUMMER FAYRE A GREAT DAY WAS HAD BY ALL AND A RECORD AMOUNT OF MONEY WAS RAISED by Alex Brimson

CARE & WELFARE

The Summer Fayre was held on the 12th July, organised by the Friends of Gavin Astor House to raise funds for a range of projects, including a new therapy bathroom and the Garden of Honour. Richard Corben gave an introductory speech before welcoming everybody to the Fayre, which included over 30 stalls. The glorious sunshine brought a record turnout with all taking part in the various activities, including a bouncy castle for children (and some adults!) and incredible dog agility training. A great deal of effort went into making the event even bigger and better than previous years. Over £2,300 was raised, which was a record for the Summer Fayre. It was a really successful day for RBLI and a great afternoon for all those that attended, and was only made possible by the hard work of Linda Alder and the Friends of Gavin Astor House, as well as many other volunteers.

VILLAGE RESIDENTS FOR 50 YEARS 2014 has been an exciting year so far for two of RBLI’s residents. Peter Hopper and Philip Newell have moved from Mountbatten Pavilion into Queen Elizabeth Court after living there for nearly 50 years combined. The two, who were living next door to each other at Mountbatten Pavilion, moved to QEC in May, where they are now sharing a flat together. QUEEN’S BATON RELAY 2014 RBLI’S HEALTH & WELLBEING OFFICER, MARIA GALLEGO, MET KELLY HOLMES AT THE QUEEN’S BATON RELAY EVENT AT TONBRIDGE CASTLE

In June 2014, the Commonwealth Baton came through Kent as part of the Queen’s Baton Relay for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2014. Leading the warm-up for 600 children involved in the public event at Tonbridge Castle was RBLI’s Health and Wellbeing Officer, Maria Gallego. The Queen’s Baton Relay is run before every Commonwealth Games, going through each country involved with a message from the Queen. The day was centred around schools in Kent and the school children of today who could become representatives of England in future Commonwealth Games. After the event, Maria even had the chance to meet Dame Kelly Holmes, Double Olympic Medal Winner and President of Commonwealth Games England! Speaking about the day, Maria told us, “It was a great inspirational event for young people, encouraging them to be involved in sport and health and wellbeing. It was also a great opportunity to meet Dame Kelly Holmes and other athletes and to be a part of the Queen’s Baton Relay 2014.”

A GREAT PARTNERSHIP A recent partnership with Aylesford School saw students working with RBLI Armed Forces Veterans on two occasions. The first event, a Great Aylesford Community Day, saw students introduce Veterans to cultures from around the world and compare life in the 1950s to now. The second event saw Veterans talking to students about their war time experiences on an introduction day, after which the students wrote biographies of the Veterans’ lives. These works were then compiled into a booklet and presented to the Veterans at a presentation afternoon in Mountbatten Pavilion. Maria Gallego, who organised the event, said “Thomas Fishenden, a student from the College, wrote a beautiful poem which he read for us. It was a very emotional experience for all who attended and it was a honour to organise the event for our heroes.” One of the students said “It is something that will stay in our hearts for years to come.” 19

RBLI WORK PROGRAMME SUCCESS IN KENT RBLI HAVE PLACED OVER 60 LONG TERM UNEMPLOYED PEOPLE INTO WORK WITH THE KENT POTATO COMPANY

20

RBLI’s Work Programme Office in Margate has established a partnership with the Kent Potato Company, and as a result has recently placed over 60 long term unemployed people from the local area into sustainable positions in their factory. We provide support to local jobseekers throughout a number of Work Programme Offices in the South East, and the office in Margate, managed by Sue Graham and opened in 2013, has already helped numerous people into employment. The growing relationship between RBLI and the Kent Potato Company offers the opportunity for the long term unemployed in Thanet to find sustainable employment in addition to offering them the opportunity of career progression. The Kent Potato Company have revealed that they will look to use our free recruitment service as their primary means of recruitment in the future, and will continue to utilise Robin Collison from the Margate Office as their main point of contact. The company’s Pack House Manager, Peter Cowell, was pleased with those employed through RBLI so far, and said that all the new recruits showed “huge promise”. Richard Brooks, RBLI’s Head of Employability & Skills, said “Our developing relationship with the Kent Potato Company is an excellent example of how Work Programme can deliver results to employers and local unemployed people. RBLI offers an excellent service to the Kent Potato Company free of charge and they in turn support us in helping our customers who are seeking sustainable jobs to work with them.” A brilliant result for all involved!

SHARON PATMORE RAISES £750 FOR RBLI’S CAPEL MORRIS CENTRE LAST EDITION WE HEARD OF SHARON’S PLANS FOR THE MARATHON, NOW, SHE TELLS US HOW IT WENT

Despite tripping down a pothole and grazing my knees before it started, I managed to achieve a time of 4:25! Everything I’d planned with fluid and nutrition intake fell into place, ensuring that I managed to complete the race. I ran every step of the way in front of the largest ever crowd in London; it was amazingly motivating. To cap off the day I had the most enormous burger at the champagne bar in St Pancras washed down by a very large glass of champagne before catching the train home. Thanks to everyone who sponsored me; I’ve been overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity and have raised nearly £3,000 in total, of which £750 has been donated towards a new pool table in the Capel Morris Centre.
