CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S MESSAGE IMPROVING LIVES EVERY DAY WARBLINGS is an excellent reminder of the diverse and interesting range of activities that RBLI gets up to. Of course, being busy is not in itself newsworthy, but, it is what allows us to keep delivering our mission - improving lives every day - and that’s what we’re all about. As you read this edition of WARBLINGS think about how this wonderful array of good work is all focused on supporting our beneficiaries towards independence and achieving their goals.
OUR WORK IS FOCUSED ON SUPPORTING OUR BENEFICIARIES TO INDEPENDENCE We continue to provide a high standard of support to those in the Army who have been wounded, injured or fallen sick. In addition, our LifeWorks courses, for Veterans and military spouses, have received wide acclaim. In 2015 we will be delivering them to Veterans in Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds and South Yorkshire. Elsewhere in 2014, our Work Programme team placed 1700 long term unemployed people into work and our Access to Work Team have had their contract renewed for a further 2 years. The plans for village improvements are now well underway. Our Garden of Honour is looking wonderful, and provided us with a most fitting setting for the Village Remembrance Day Service and our Armistice Day Service attended by the Defence Secretary. Winning the £2m LIBOR grant towards our project for 24 apartments along Hermitage Lane was
fantastic news, and the £50,000 won in the People’s Millions means we will be opening The Village Tea Rooms, located in the Doctor’s House, later this summer. Thank you to everyone who helped us win. This allows us to continue to enhance the Village for the benefit of current and future residents of our houses and care homes.
THE £2M LIBOR GRANT WAS FANTASTIC NEWS In September the Secretary of State for Transport officially opened the new Signs and Graphics area in our Social Enterprise and our many customers including Amey, TMP and Kent County Council, showed us their support. We also hosted visits from the CE of the Highways Agency, the Chairman of the South East Local Enterprise Partnership and the Kent Ambassadors. Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council also continue to fully support our mission of improving lives every day. As a vibrant and dynamic charity, we are now investing in a ‘best in class’ training and development programme called Momentum. Launched in late 2014, Momentum will ensure Team RBLI has the skills to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow. Our achievements in 2014 are a reflection of the wonderful support from customers, friends, staff and volunteers for which I thank you all enormously. I sense that 2015 will be every bit as challenging, successful and rewarding and I hope many more people will help us to “improve lives every day”.

TWO RBLI EMPLOYEES BECOME INVICTUS GAMES HEROES This September RBLI had one of its proudest moments to date: Kushal Limbu and Anil Gurung, two Veterans who work in our Social Enterprise, became gold medallists after representing Team GB at the Invictus Games. Selected for a team made up of just 130 British Servicemen and women, Kushal and Anil both competed on the Sitting Volleyball Team which beat the USA 3-0 in the final to win the top spot. Kushal Limbu won an impressive haul of four medals in total, sprinting to Gold in the men’s 200m and Silver in the men’s 100m Ambulant IT1 races. He also took Bronze in the 4 x 100m Mixed Relay.
Our Chief Executive, Steve Sherry, said “We are extremely proud of Kushal and Anil. Their success demonstrates just what can be achieved through determination. Ever since they joined RBLI, Kushal and Anil have been an inspiration to their colleagues and we are delighted that they have had the opportunity to participate in the Invictus Games, competing alongside fellow Veterans, to remind us all why we should be justifiably proud of our Armed Forces.” The Invictus Games were organised by Prince Harry and brought together over 400 competitors from 13 countries to demonstrate the power of sport as a means of rehabilitation. 4

The two have returned to work at RBLI to a hero’s welcome, which included a presentation from our Director of Operations, James Rudoni. Both former Riflemen from 2nd Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles, Anil and Kushal work in the Fulfilment Area of our Social Enterprise among a number of other Veterans and disabled people.

I was nervous and excited to take part, but the team at RBLI, as well as the other Servicemen and women taking part, gave me huge moral support.”

RBLI AWARDED £1.95M TO BUILD APARTMENTS FOR WOUNDED SOLDIERS
RBLI has been awarded £1.95 million from the Armed Forces Covenant LIBOR Fund to develop 24 apartments which will provide much needed accommodation for single Veterans. The apartments will predominantly provide accommodation for single wounded, injured and December 2014 sick (WIS) Veterans and will be fully adapted to provide long term homes for Veterans who have mobility needs.

Michael Fallon, Secretary of State for Defence, said: “It was my privilege to be here today to see some of the fantastic examples of how Royal British Legion Industries are helping our Veterans and to share their service of Remembrance. “I’m delighted that they will benefit from LIBOR funding, which will allow them to do even more to assist Veterans and their families to find accommodation and to adapt it to their needs.” Our Chief Executive Steve Sherry is delighted with the news: “It seems fitting that this news was announced on Armistice Day. We’re extremely proud that nearly one hundred years after our inception we are still helping Veterans gain sustainable employment and independence. “It was great to see the Secretary of State’s enthusiasm for the work of RBLI and our exciting plans for the new apartments.”

GARDEN OF HONOUR STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS RAISE FUNDS BY DOING A 500 MILE STATIC CYCLE RIDE
The 6th and 7th September 2014 saw a team of employees and supporters of RBLI join together to cycle the distance of the Western Front. Their mission - to encourage the public to donate towards the Garden of Honour. The cycle, which was a static cycle ride in Aylesford, saw the team achieve a joint total of more than 500 miles! During the ride, the team also spoke to the local community about the project to transform the Garden, gaining many more supporters and raising a grand total of ÂŁ2380 towards the cause. An amazing effort and a great achievement - well done to everyone who took part!
THE BUILD PROGRESSES
The last 6 months has seen a tremendous effort in fundraising from Penny Dyson and the Friends, but also an incredible amount of work done towards completing the transformation. Most of the build and landscaping is now complete - work that included the creation of amphitheatre seating (left) and a poppy made from recycled glass (below). Every year on Armistice Day, staff, local residents and supporters join together to remember those who fought for us in World War I. This year we were joined in remembrance by The Right Honourable Michael Fallon MP, Secretary of State for Defence (top left). Michael Fallon met with RBLI exservice staff and residents before the service to talk about their experiences in the Forces. The service was led by the Reverend Chris Van Straaten, and children from local primary schools also paid their respects.

Saturday 8th November saw The Royal British Legion host their annual Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall. Representing RBLI were Health & Wellbeing Officer Maria Gallego, and Fulfilment Team Supervisor Kenny Kendrick. Speaking after the event, Kenny said, ”I was proud to represent RBLI, the event was quite emotional and was made even more special by WWI Centenary commemorations”.

Several members of staff from Marriott Tudor Park Hotel & Country Club, who chose RBLI as their charity of the year, spent a day in our Social Enterprise as volunteers. Michael Regenhardt, General Manager of Tudor Park, and his team took part in a range of activities from making signs to bonneting jam jars and even assembling pieces of K’NEX. Everybody had a thoroughly enjoyable time and we would like to thank them for their efforts. We were fortunate to have a visit from a number of members of The Kent Ambassadors on 18th November. The Kent Ambassadors are a group of highly successful and experienced people who either live or work in Kent and who have come together in a voluntary arrangement to help all aspects of life in Kent. On 21st November we were visited by the Chief Executive, Graham Dalton, and the Head of Procurement, Sharon Cuff, of the Highways Agency. The Highways Agency operates, maintains and improves the strategic road network in England, which includes over 4300 miles of roads and is made up of motorways and trunk roads. They had a tour of our Social Enterprise, including an extensive visit to the signs’ printing and production areas.

how we made the lar Our Fulfilment Team broke a Guinness World Record by constructing the largest K’NEX structure ever. It took over 380,000 pieces to complete the construction of a full size replica of the BLOODHOUND Supersonic Car, measuring

SECRETARY OF STATE FOR TRANSPORT VISITS MP PATRICK MCLOUGHLIN TOURS RBLI’S SOCIAL ENTERPRISE
On Thursday 4th September 2014 the Rt. Hon. Patrick McLoughlin MP, Secretary of State for Transport, visited RBLI to open our new high-tech road and rail signs printing and graphics area. During his visit, Mr McLoughlin met with some of RBLI’s employees and clients, and spoke about how impressed he was with RBLI’s modernisation programme and strategy for growth: “If you’re going to compete as a social enterprise you have to invest. In the future, people will come to you not because you’re a social enterprise but because you have built a reputation for providing first-class products and services to the market.”
RBLI DONATES SIGN TO DISABLED STUDENTS

RBLI have donated a sign to a college for disabled students. Queen Alexandra College is opening a new and unique training facility named ‘Independence Street’. The travel training site is designed to assist students to safely negotiate the street environment, and the facility worth £50,000, was built at no cost to the college by employees from Amey, with all materials donated by suppliers, including RBLI. Independence Street was officially opened on Monday 6th October by local councillor Lisa Trickett as well as former student and current Governor Dave Heeley. Hugh Williams, Principal at QAC said; “We are extremely grateful to Amey and their suppliers for making this project come to life. This will make a real difference to our students.”

RBLI’S GATEWAY SIGNS UNVEILED IN SOMERSET
Radstock in Somerset has become the first town to install multiple new style Gateway Signs built by RBLI. Bath & North East Somerset Council commissioned seven new gateway signs for Radstock and its communities, all featuring photographs of local landmarks. RBLI is one of only four manufacturers able to produce the signs, developed by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Department for Transport, which aim to help ensure a better sense of place for communities. Cllr Dine Romero, the Council’s joint Cabinet Lead for the Community Covenant, said: “We are pleased to have been able to commission the signs from Royal British Legion Industries as part of our commitment to the Community Covenant signed in 2013.” After the unveiling, our Director of Commercial, Geoff Streetley said “It’s relationships with councils like Bath and North East Somerset that allow us to provide continued support to Veterans.”
LINKS WITH THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION STRENGTHENED
Our 90 year relationship with The Royal British Legion (TRBL) has been strengthened by new work taken on by our Print & Mail Team. Our team based in Leatherhead developed the relationship with TRBL’s Surrey County Office, but have now broadened their reach to include all 55 Area Managers and County Fundraisers. This will include the distribution of their quarterly newsletter as well as other small mailings.
MARTIN EASTERBY TELLS US ABOUT NEW CUSTOMERS
The new pallet manufacturing machine mentioned in the last issue of Warblings has now been installed! It allows us to make our pallets more efficiently so that we can win more business and are able to compete against other suppliers to the bagged sand and aggregate industries. Since the installation we have succeeded in winning two new customers, Gill Aggregates and Hye Oak. 15

BASE CAMP PROJECT WINS THE PEOPLE’S MILLIONS £50,000 WIN WILL HELP CREATE A COMMUNITY HUB FOR THE VILLAGE & SURROUNDING AREAS BASE CAMP WILL STRENGTHEN LINKS WITH LOCAL SCHOOLS & COLLEGES 16
We are delighted to announce that we have won £50,000 from the People’s Millions towards a project to convert the former Doctor’s House on our site in Aylesford. The project, ‘Base Camp’, will provide a community facility for Veterans and local residents and will have a community cafe at its heart, along with rooms where a wide range of activities, from computer lessons to healthy eating classes, will take place. RBLI’s Base Camp secured the grant by gaining the highest number of public votes in the competition on the 25th November. This was achieved by the hard work of our employees who spoke with local business about the project and on the day worked together to deliver leaflets and talk to local residents. Liz Rickaby, who co-ordinated the project, said “We are extremely grateful for all the support we received; it was wonderful to see the whole community getting behind our campaign. We hope this will help us to forge even greater links with local schools and community groups, providing a place that everyone can enjoy.” Work on the project will commence early in the new year with the aim of having the facility up and running by the end of 2015. GAVIN ASTOR HOUSE CHRISTMAS FAYRE FAYRE OPENED BY TRACEY CROUCH MP
A great afternoon was had by all at the annual Gavin Astor House Christmas Fayre. Opened by Tracey Crouch MP, the Fayre was one of the biggest ever with a range of stalls selling everything from cakes and biscuits to Christmas gifts. Thank you to the Friends of Gavin Astor House for ensuring this was a great event for the residents, families and members of the general public that attended.
CHEESE, WINE, CAKE AND CAROLS A FUN WAY TO GET EVERYONE IN THE FESTIVE MOOD
Friday 5th December saw a Carol Evening at Gavin Astor House. Run by Sarah Winter, our Social Care Coordinator, along with volunteer Margaret Parnham, the evening was a fun way to begin the festive celebrations. The evening saw all who attended well fed, with various types of cheese, crackers and wine on offer! Christmas cake was also kindly donated to the event by Host Catering. Local group Hans & Friends then led a session of carol singing to get everyone well and truly in the Christmas spirit. The total raised was £134 which will be used towards residents’ entertainment in 2015.
RESIDENT AWARDED KOREAN MEDAL We are delighted that one of our residents from Queen Elizabeth Court, Sydney Turner, was recently awarded the Korean Peace Medal. He was presented with the medal at a grand ceremony in the Savoy Hotel on 13th November, where the Korean Ambassador presented medals to a selection of Veterans who fought during the conflict. Sydney served in the British Army for 22 years before leaving in 1973. His time in service included deployments to Egypt and Cyprus as well as Korea. He said it was an honour to receive the award and that “it was a great event and could not have been any better.” 17

LIFEWORKS FAMILIES CONTINUES TO EXPAND IAIN DOWNIE TELLS US ABOUT DELIVERING IN CYPRUS
The reach of LifeWorks has increased even further in the last quarter with more courses across the UK and even 2 in Cyprus! Daisy Guy visited Dhekelia and Episkopi in September and delivered the course to 12 spouses. The feedback was extremely positive and several of the delegates have since found jobs, one lady after 10 years without employment. Daisy assures us that it was hard work and that she definitely didn’t get any opportunity to relax by the pool!
WORKING WITH LOCAL GOVERNMENT LIFEWORKS TO BE DELIVERED IN LIVERPOOL, MANCHESTER AND YORKSHIRE
One of the challenges faced by delegates for the LifeWorks course is the need to travel down to Aylesford. In partnership with Local Authorities, we are developing a plan to expand our delivery of LifeWorks in the North of England. We will be starting with a pilot course in Liverpool with plans to take the course to South Yorkshire, Leeds and Manchester throughout 2015. The course has been warmly welcomed so far and this is a great chance to take a superb programme to the Veterans that need it.
LIFEWORKS SUPPORTS OFFENDERS CASTLE HUNTLY HOSTS A LIFEWORKS COURSE FOR OFFENDERS 18
In partnership with Poppy Scotland the LifeWorks Team were asked to deliver a course to Veterans in Castle Huntly Open Estate Prison in Scotland. The course was a great success and showed us that LifeWorks can be delivered within the Criminal Justice System. We have been asked to return to Castle Huntly later this year and we hope to do so alongside developing some opportunities to work in other prisons as part of Project VICTR. This is a great opportunity to reach some of our harder to help beneficiaries.

CHANGES TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES AT THIS YEAR’S AGM AGM SEES CHANGE OF CHAIRMAN AT RBLI FRANK MARTIN BECOMES VICE CHAIRMAN
This year’s AGM saw the end of an era, with Richard Corben stepping down as Chairman after 2 years in the position. Since becoming a trustee in 1982, Mr Corben has seen the charity evolve and grow into the organisation it is today. He is succeeded by former Vice Chairman Stephen Kingsman DL, who has been a member of the Board of Trustees for 3 years. Mr Kingsman brings a wealth of experience to the position having operated Denne Construction, a building company based in the South East, for a number of years. He has also been heavily involved in the Garden of Honour project, chairing the committee that has brought the plan to fruition. Taking over as Vice Chairman is Frank Martin DL, who joined the Board as a Trustee in 2014 after serving as the Chief Executive of toy manufacturer Hornby for 13 years. This year also saw our President, Viscount De L’Isle MBE, Lord Lieutenant of Kent, say farewell to two other trustees from the Board. Peter Edgley (top left), previously Managing Director and Board member of the Kent Messenger Group, is leaving after joining RBLI in 2002 as Finance Trustee. Trevor May (bottom left) is also leaving, having held his position as part of the Legal and Estates subcommittee since 2004. He was formerly a senior partner of legal firm Thomson, Snell and Passmore.

WORKING TOGETHER FOR OUR FORCES LIZ RICKABY TELLS US ABOUT OUR NEW PARTNERSHIPS
At RBLI we have always maintained our commitment to working in partnership to ensure we can continue to provide the best possible service to our customers. We are therefore delighted to report on two new partnerships established recently to extend support to the Armed Forces Community. Ex-Military Careers: Ex-Military Careers is a Social Enterprise working across a number of industry sectors, engaging employers who wish to recruit the skills and talents of former serving personnel and advertising their vacancies on their free to use Jobs Board. The values and objectives of James and Ashley, who founded the organisation, align themselves well with ours and providing access to a wide range of quality job opportunities was the natural next stage in the pathway of support for our LifeWorks delegates. Recruit for Spouses: Founded and run by military spouses, Recruit for Spouses is a Social Enterprise whose aim is to support military spouses to find employment, changing the perception of Forces’ spouses as a transient work force and raising awareness of the skills, knowledge and value that they can bring to a business. As RBLI’s LifeWorks Families programme continues to gain momentum, working with Recruit for Spouses provides us with a source of referrals and a valuable link to jobs for our delegates. We are looking forward to working with both organisations to develop our services and provide even more valuable support to Veterans and their families.
RBLI DELIVER IN TIME FOR NEW YEAR SIGNS DEPARTMENT DELIVER IN AN EMERGENCY
In the run up to Christmas, our Signs department did some great work with Balfour Beatty manufacturing over 400 bespoke signs for delivery before the holiday. The work was for part of the Thameslink project, which aims to transform northsouth travel in London. During operation shutdown over Christmas, Balfour Beatty contacted us with a urgent request for another sign. Paul Vassar, Engineering Delivery Manager for Balfour Beatty, tells us how RBLI’s emergency cover came to the rescue: ‘During our Thameslink low level commissioning stage (Christmas 2014), it was noted that a sign was missing from the stores. This was a sign that would be required for the commissioning completion on 2nd January. A voicemail was left with RBLI’s out of hours contact number and a response was received soon after. RBLI mobilised a sign maker, and had the sign delivered personally on New Years Eve. The ability to respond to out of hours requests was in this case invaluable.” 21

2014 has been an incredible year for RBLI employee and archery enthusiast Jacqui Gould who is now the UK no.1 shooting barebow. She has broken six UK records along with numerous county records and has won championship titles at several events, including the UK Masters, Kent Outdoor and Kent Indoor Championships.

As well as working at RBLI, Jacqui also supports a club that is leading the way for disability archery in the southern region.

DAVID’S DAY 2014 50 CHILDREN HAVE A FUN DAY AT RBLI NICK RAISES £1000 FOR DAVID’S DAY
David’s Day 2014 was a fun K’NEX themed day based around our world record breaking BLOODHOUND model. Working in partnership with the Maidstone Special Needs Support Service (M4S), we were able to support over 50 children who got to try their hand at building K’NEX models. The day ended on a high as children and their families visited our factory to see the 44ft long BLOODHOUND model in situ and have their photos taken next to a Guinness World Record breaker! We would like to thank Nick McDonald from Business Systems who raised nearly £1000 for David’s Day by playing an incredible 72 holes of golf in just one day!
