Remembrance 2022

Whilst we are grateful that we have been able to return to some kind of normal, we still have a lot of work to do to raise the necessary funds. We are very thankful to our fundraising community and our supporters as, without you, we wouldn’t be able to keep up the level of support that we are able to provide to our Armed Forces communities.

The Royal British Legion is here to help members of the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, veterans and their families. Our support starts after one day of service and continues through life, long after service is over.

Every year we also pay respect to, and remember those, who serve, or have served, to defend our democratic freedoms and way of life. We unite across faiths, cultures, and backgrounds to remember the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces community from Britain and the Commonwealth.

From veterans of the Falklands War and WW2 to those who continue to play a vital role in service to Britain today, we are commemorating military and civilian service through a variety of anniversaries and events in 2022.

FIRST WOMEN IN SERVICE

Our First Women of the Armed Forces brooch celebrates women’s achievements throughout the services – those who have broken boundaries, launched legacies, and been the ‘first’ to achieve a rank or position within the Armed Forces. We feature Julie Ann Gibson who graduated as the first female pilot in the RAF and awarded her wings in 1991.

Each brooch is presented in a bespoke box and contains a certificate in recognition of the amazing women who have made these achievements.

Earlier this year we marked 40 years since the Falklands Conflict. A generation may have passed, but we will always support Falklands veterans, as if the conflict were just yesterday.

REMEMBRANCE

On Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday we formally remember those who have sacrificed in service to their country. But for many, Remembrance isn’t limited to a single day. It’s a deeply personal act taking place throughout the year, often recognising a range of sacrifices.

To recognise the service and sacrifice that our Armed Forces have made over the decades, we remember those who we have lost, but also mark the sacrifices that have been made from every one, lost, or living.

poppy purchased during our Poppy Appeal, and all products bought from the Poppy Shop throughout the year, are truly symbolic and count towards the Royal British Legion fundraising.

Red poppies have been worn as a show of support for the Armed Forces community since the Royal British Legion’s formation in 1921. The idea originates from a poem, ‘In Flanders Fields’ by Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae when, shortly after losing a friend in Ypres in 1915, he was inspired by the sight of poppies growing in battle-scarred fields to write his now famous poem.

His poem inspired American War Secretary, Moina Michael, who bought poppies to sell to her friends to raise money for Servicemen in need after the First World War. The RBL adopted this in 1921 and ordered a million poppies from Anna Guérin in France and commissioned a further eight million to be manufactured in Britain. These were sold on 11 November that year in the first ever Poppy Appeal.

It represents all those who lost their lives in active service in all conflicts; from the beginning of the First World War right up to present day.

It also honours the contribution of civilian services and the uniformed services which contribute to national peace and security and acknowledges innocent civilians who have lost their lives in conflict and acts of terrorism.

There is no ‘correct’ way to wear a poppy

Contrary to popular belief, wearing a poppy is a personal choice reflecting individual and personal memories. The colour of the poppy is red because that’s the natural colour of the original poppy flower.

Sea Land and Air Poppy

Next year marks 85 years of the unique and wonderful Spitfire, from its service beginnings in 1938 to its impressive and iconic history, the Spitfire is world renowned. It went through seven changes to improve and evolve its original fantastic engineering.

The Royal British Legion have been fortunate enough to work with TMB to produce these Spitfire Biggin Hill Coins. These collectable coins pay tribute to two of the most iconic names in Royal Air Force history, the Supermarine Spitfire and RAF Biggin Hill airfield in Kent, both of which were so vital during the Battle of Britain in 1940 and during the Second World War in general. RAF Biggin Hill first became a military landing ground in 1917, being developed in the interwar years and accelerated its growth in 1939 as conflict with Germany appeared to be imminent.

Impressive and truly unique; all of the items in our collection will make the perfect gift and are a fitting tribute to the brave men and women who served and sacrificed to protect our freedoms.
