Latin Tracks takes a close look at Chile’s meter gauge Ferrocarril de Antofagasta a Bolivia (FCAB), quite probably one of the most efficient and profitable railway operations in the world. CHILE’S METER GAUGE Antofagasta (Chili) and Bolivia Railway Company Ltd (Ferrocarril de Antofagasta a Bolivia - FCAB), today also known as Antofagasta Railway Company PLC, has quite a unique railway history in Latin America. Since its incorporation, in November 1888, the FCAB has always been a privately owned company quoting on the London Stock Exchange (LSE).

It survived the Great Depression, which led to the demise or nationalization of many other railways in the region, and in the early 1970’s, narrowly averted the nationalization wave that engulfed Chile during the Socialist (Marxist) regime of President Salvador Allende. Fortunately for Chile, the railway was never nationalized and today its very dynamic administration has created an extremely effi-
