Success Requires Tenacity , it would be tenacity. I’m not one to refer to dictionary definitions, but I think this is a fitting occasion. Merriam-Webster defines tenacious as: “not easily pulled apart” and “persistent in maintaining, adhering to, or seeking something valued or desired.”
You can relate tenacity to every aspect of what you do as a fitness professional. You must communicate tenacity with your clients; are they willing to be persistent in accomplishing their goals, no matter what setbacks they may face? Are you tenacious in your own personal and professional life? Do you set concrete markers of success for yourself? Do you hold yourself accountable to take action and follow through? Tenacity is the perfect thread that ties together this issue of PFP, “Build your Business.” Many of you who took a risk and switched careers to become a fitness professional or those who have invested significant time and money to gain a higher degree in our field know that without tenacity, even the slightest degree of success would be non-existent. Tenacity is that fearless “stick-to-it” quality; that no matter what the sacrifice, you will do whatever it takes to commit to a profession that you are passionate about.

to CEOs, CFOs and other corporate executives. I was able to develop communication skills and motivational skills, which I have successfully transferred to personal training. Following Wall Street, I began to develop a career as a personal trainer. My first position was at the Allied Signal corporate health center in Morristown, New Jersey. I was fortunate to learn from very knowledgeable and experienced personal trainers and other health professionals. At Allied, I was able to advance from floor work to administering fitness tests and assessments and to monitoring high-risk individuals. Most days, I would work double shifts in order to gain experience and accelerate the learning curve.

How did you decide that you wanted to focus primarily on working with clients who were recovering from cancer?
cm:

There are few occasions in life when we are fortunate to meet a person who leaves a lasting impression on us. They are the people who, mostly out of humility, may not even realize the significant impact they have on others. They hold themselves to a higher standard, not because they want recognition or accolades, but because they are driven by integrity and a genuine drive to make a difference in the world. Interviewing Carol, I was struck by what I would describe as her “graceful tenacity.” Carol is a Wharton School of Business graduate and former Wall Street bond trader. Not exactly the image one conjures when imagining a fitness professional whose passion is working with cancer recovery patients. But it’s apparent that the same tenacity and persistence required of her to be successful on Wall Street is what she’s applied to her career in fitness; and she does it all with grace. Carol’s journey to success in the fitness industry was brought together by what she describes as “two converging paths.” Following her career on Wall Street, she wanted a position that would let her combine her need for physical activity and love for movement with her strong entrepreneurial spirit. The other path derived from her experiences watching several loved ones suffer, and in some instances die, from cancer. Serving as a caregiver to her mother, father and other close family and friends as they managed the disease inspired her to do whatever she could to help the healing process. And so was born her Recovery Fitness cancer exercise program.

Share with us your journey from Wall Street bond trader to creator of Recovery Fitness for cancer recovery patients, and how has your experience influenced your success today as a Cancer Exercise Specialist?
cm:
I attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, which taught me the skills needed to run a business. My heart, however, was always in the health field. Trading to training is an unusual career path. Bond trading, however, prepared me for hard work and improved my listening and people skills. It helped me become mentally stronger, which helps me deal with the life-threatening issues faced by my clients. It also gave me the opportunity to present ideas and strategies
After certification by ACE, I started my own personal training business. I began by training a few friends. In 1999, I started providing fitness programs at three adult education centers. I worked with people of all ages and fitness levels. It also brought me in contact with many people who were suffering from the side effects of cancer surgery and treatments. Cancer has been part of my world for over 30 years. My mother, father, and many other family members and friends have battled this disease. Now, I was seeing this disease in my clients and I determined that I had to help these clients improve their quality of life. I needed to make an impact on a deep level. This was one of the motivating factors for my desire to become a fitness professional. After significant research and learning how exercise can improve the recovery process, I was determined to spread the word.
lv:
Moving entirely into a focused and specific training niche can often be a challenge for many fitness professionals. How did you do it successfully?
cm:
I began to set up meetings and presentations with physicians in my area to discuss the exercise program. They were excited about having a place to send their patients after, and as an adjunct to, physical therapy. I also created exercise groups comprised of patients who had similar cancers, surgeries, issues and concerns, thus also resulting in a support group. I decided to obtain additional certifications: ACSM and the Cancer Training Institute. These certifications helped me to become a better trainer through additional education. I also attended every conference possible either in person, via a webinar or podcast, read numerous books and the latest studies in order to obtain the latest information on cancer. Finally, I was ready and launched Recovery Fitness cancer exercise program.

CM:
There have been numerous people who have helped me along my way. In particular, my mentors have been my in-laws, Dr. Milton M. Michaels and Lois G. Michaels. Lois, a pioneer in health education, created Health Place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the 1970s. Her expertise in public health has provided me with useful insights into health systems. Dr. Michaels, a hematologist, worked with me on the recovery fitness program ensuring that it was medically sound.
LV:
What have been your greatest frustrations or obstacles since launching Recovery Fitness? How did you get through the challenges?
CM:
It was very difficult to get Recovery Fitness accepted by the medical community. Some needed to overcome a preconceived bias that disregarded the importance of exercise in the recovery process. I needed to demonstrate that not only was the exercise important, the exercise program had to be tailored to meet the needs of patients who had just gone through complicated surgery or other treatment. This took great perseverance. I met as many oncology health professionals as possible and have been able to demonstrate the efficacy of the Recovery Fitness program and how it could help them and their patients. I read and subscribe to numerous cancer publications, and study cancer-related websites. By staying informed on the latest reconstructions and treatments I can understand my clients’ situations and develop an exercise program that will give them the best results. This also gives me the knowledge and ability to communicate with everyone on the medical team. I am able to speak to their health professionals so that I can understand the particular health issues of each patient.
LV:
What does the future hold for Carol Michaels and Recovery Fitness?
CM:
I am currently working on a Recovery Fitness DVD that should be out next month. This DVD will enable those who cannot afford private sessions or who cannot attend one of my programs to improve their range of motion. I have received emails from health professionals throughout the country who have expressed an interest in becoming certified as a Recovery Fitness cancer exercise specialist. In 2012, I will be writing a manual to teach trainers and other health professionals about the specific exercises that will improve recovery following a cancer diagnosis and treatment. This manual will be a component of a training module that I am developing to teach other fitness professionals how to work with cancer survivors. My five-year goal is to increase the awareness of the importance of exercise in the recovery process from cancer surgery and treatments. I have been able to demonstrate that the Recovery Fitness program is medically sound and have had internists, surgeons, and oncologists endorse the program. The value of adding a fitness professional to the patient’s team is finally receiving the acknowledgment that it deserves by the medical community. With this in mind, I plan on mentoring younger professionals to help them get started in my niche. In five years I hope to have Recovery Fitness training programs established nationally so that fitness professionals throughout the country can learn the effective exercises that I have developed to improve the healing process.

Why Belonging to a Mastermind Group or Coaching Program Could Be Exactly What You Need
There’s a popular saying that two heads are better than one. The truth to this old adage is one of the reasons that there are more fitness professionals than ever participating in mastermind groups and coaching programs. Napoleon Hill is credited with popularizing the concept of the mastermind group in his book, Think and Grow Rich, and the wisdom of participating in masterminding or receiving coaching has never been more relevant. Think about the power of having multiple people working together to propel you to success and reach your potential as a business owner. That’s what being part of a mastermind group or coaching program can do for you.
Why Participate in a Mastermind Group or Coaching Program? If there is any group of professionals that should appreciate the value of joining a mastermind group or coaching program, it’s personal trainers. Each day personal trainers are charged with the responsibility of coaching their clients to achieve things that they likely wouldn’t have achieved without the support, knowledge and accountability the trainer provides. Mastermind groups and coaching programs are essentially offering the same accountability, support and knowledge for personal trainers that trainers are doing for their clients.
Here are a few examples of the benefits that mastermind groups and coaching programs provide: Increased Focus and Productivity: Having the accountability of a group or coach will increase your focus and productivity, resulting in more quality work getting done in a shorter period of time and goals being achieved faster. Reduced Procrastination and Fewer Excuses: Working with a mastermind group or coach means that you are held accountable for your actions. There is a sense of not wanting to disappoint or disregard your fellow group members’ or coach’s time and so you are more likely to follow through when you know someone else is counting on you. Increased Confidence: There is a power of speaking your intentions or thoughts out loud to others. Sharing your ideas and asking for help from others builds your confidence and propels you forward. A Changed Perspective: Sometimes our biggest “aha moments” come when we are looking at the challenge of a peer. We’re working on their issue, and when we walk away, we then see our own situation differently. More Vision and Fresh Ideas: Vision and innovative ideas are a recipe for success. If you have ever been part of a “brainstorming” session you understand the power of the process. Two heads are better than one, and a coach or mastermind group can bring a whole new scope of vision and fresh ideas to the table. A good coach or mastermind group will provide ideas that can easily take your endeavors to the next level. Reduced Sense of Overwhelm: Feeling overwhelmed is a very common emotion for emerging entrepreneurs, especially when being forced to learn new skills and presented with such a high (initial) workload. A supportive, assertive and encouraging coach or mastermind group can significantly help prevent this condition and provide you with moral support. Access to a Broader Range of Expertise: A good coach or mastermind group will give you access to expertise in a variety of areas. By gaining your own degree of expertise in these areas, you will be able to move your business forward. Higher Standards: A coach or mastermind group will inevitably improve the quality of your business. An extra pair of eyes, more ideas and the peer pressure that
comes with coaching or masterminding will ensure that you’re reaching your potential as a business owner. Get Valuable Feedback Quickly: When you have a burning issue you can bring it to your group and get instant, honest feedback and advice. Hopefully by now I’ve sold you on the benefits of working with a coach or joining a mastermind group. If so, then the question is, “Which do I choose?” This is a question I often get from fitness professionals interested in enrolling in one of our programs, and there are a variety of considerations when making the decision. What is your budget? Working with a coach or joining a mastermind requires an investment. While coaches may work with you through calls and emails, you will usually have to travel several times per year to participate in a mastermind, so you should factor in those additional costs as well. Can you commit? For the masterminds that we run, the expectation is that each member will add as much value to the group as they derive from it. This means not only being in attendance at most meetings, but also truly being present for the other members so that they can benefit from what you have to share. What do you need? Are you looking to improve a specific area of your business? If so, a coach with expertise in that topic is likely your best bet. If you’re just looking for a way to improve your business as a whole, the combination of benefits that masterminding provides might just be what you are looking for. Who is the coach/facilitator? All coaches and mastermind groups are not created equal. You need to find a coach or facilitator who has the expertise you need, shares similar values to your own, and has a style or personality that resonates with you.
How do you work best? Each coaching program or mastermind group will have its own unique characteristics and dynamics. Some coaches provide almost ‘on-call’ access via phone and email while others set out a single scheduled call with clients each month. Some mastermind groups have regular correspondence between live meetings while others simply offer two to three meetings in person. If you are someone that thrives on regular accountability or needs the freedom to bounce ideas off of a coach regularly, be sure that the program or group that you choose provides that. Whether investing in a coaching program or a mastermind group, there isn’t really a right answer. Either has the potential to be of significant benefit to you, and if you choose the right one it can literally transform your business. But like any investment, this is not one that should be treated haphazardly. Research the program or group that you are considering. Talk to people who are current or past participants. Compare what you are looking for and what the program or group provides. If you do your homework and choose the right solution, it could be the best decision you make for your business.

We
have witnessed an explosion of new equipment and training methods over the years. One of my favorite fitness workouts involves the stability ball. Although the ball has been a part of training for a long time, I always find myself going back to this versatile piece of equipment. As my knowledge and experience grows, so does my ability to use the ball in creative and effective exercise programming. It can be used effectively for improving strength, balance, and flexibility. The ball alone can be sufficient to create a fun and unique session for your client. It is inexpensive and can be transported easily, even for in-home trainers. The stability ball has been used by physical therapists since the mid 1900s. In the early ’90s, personal trainers increased the use of the ball with their clients. The stability ball has applications for every population. Children and

teens find exercising fun while using a ball. Your fit and healthy clients will enjoy the challenges of incorporating a ball and learning new exercises that take advantage of the instability. Older adults will appreciate the challenge of performing basic strength training exercises while just sitting on the ball. Rehabilitative exercise programs are endless. The people participating in my exercise programs have said that the ball adds a new dimension to their workout. As a trainer, I never get bored while using this equipment with my clients. Sitting on a ball also reinforces the need for good posture while performing each exercise. It allows clients to strengthen their core in a very safe and effective manner. There are so many applications. With a little creativity you can create a unique and exciting exercise session for your client. Here are just some of my favorite stability ball exercises you can easily incorporate for your clients at any fitness level:
SUPINE BRIDGE Place your head on the ball with the hips lowered to the floor and the knees bent. Inhale to start and exhale as you lift the torso until you are in a straight line from shoulders to knees. To return, lower the hips toward the floor slowly with control. OBLIQUE PLANK In the pushup position, place the feet on the ball. Bring your right knee to the chest and then twist hips bringing the knee to the left shoulder. Switch legs. PUSHUP Place your body in pushup position with the feet on the ball. Inhale and slowly lower the body towards the ground. Exhale and push the body back to the starting position. Keep the core tight so that it stays in a straight line.
ABDOMINAL CRUNCH Place the lower back on the ball and place hands behind head. Exhale as you bring the torso forward bringing the navel to the spine. Return to the starting position. Do not pull on the neck and keep it in line with the spine. A more advanced version would be to start the exercise with the head lower than the top of the ball.
ABDOMINAL LEG LIFTS Lie on your back with your legs straight, arms by your side and the ball in between the ankles. Inhale to start and exhale while lifting the legs. Squeeze the ball only while you lift the legs up and press your navel to your spine. Inhale as you bring your legs slowly towards the floor. OBLIQUE STRENGTHENING To begin, lie across the ball on your side with the outer leg straight and the other knee bent. Drape yourself over the ball with the hands behind the head. Raise the torso while exhaling and slowly return to the starting position.
HAMSTRING STRENGTHENING Lie on your back with your legs straight and your heels on the ball. Press into the ball with your heels and roll the ball into your body and then return to the starting position. BACK EXTENSION Lie face down with your stomach on the ball and hands behind the head. Exhale and slowly raise the torso toward the ceiling and squeeze the gluteals. Inhale and lower down to the starting position. LOWER BACK STRENGTHENING Begin with your stomach on the ball and extend your left arm and right leg. Hold for three seconds and return to the starting position. Repeat and alternate starting sides.
PRONE PIKE Begin with the knees on the ball and the arms beneath the shoulders. Go into a pike position keeping the hips high and the legs straight. Slowly return to the neutral spine position. CHEST PRESS Lie on the stability ball with your head and neck comfortably on the ball. Start by holding weights with elbows bent and hands at chest level. Push the arms upward keeping them at chest level and slowly return. PRONE ROW Begin by placing your stomach on the ball in a kneeling position. With a weight in each hand, bend the elbows and bring them upward until the hands are near the hip. Hold for a moment while retracting the scapula. Keep the neck in line with your back and slowly return.
BALL WALL SQUATS Stand with the ball between the wall and your lower back. Your feet should be hip width apart and take two steps away from the wall. Do a squat while leaning into the ball. Bend the knees until the thigh is parallel to the floor and press the heels into the floor.

In
2010, Catalyst Fitness decided to relocate more than 25 miles and expand its space by more than 7,000 square feet. To say the least, this was a bold move given the economy. But failure did not even cross my mind or that of my partner. We both came from successful, independent businesses and combining our efforts made perfect sense. Every business has its own set of circumstances that leads to its success; I will share with you what I believe to be the key points that have contributed to our success and can be proven to work for different fitness studio models and markets.
What sets you apart? What is your vision?
Location, parking and target demographic
Personal Vision:
These are intimately intertwined with your space and need to be considered fully before your doors open. Typical training facilities are located in major cities on side streets that may have limited drive-by visibility, saving the owner money on their lease; however, this makes gaining clients and new members from passer-by traffic difficult. The availability of your clients and members to easily and safely park becomes a challenge for these off-thebeaten-path locations as well. Keep in mind people who belong to big box gyms will circle the parking lot in an attempt to find the closest spot and then go in and run three to five miles. Also consider your ideal client and how easily they can get to your location. Often people select a workout location that is convenient to their place of employment or home, or even one that is convenient to daily traffic patterns.
What do you want for your life? How do you want to spend your personal time? What do you want people to say about you as an individual?
In the last decade, personal training facilities seem to be popping up everywhere, not to mention group training facilities. Based on this information it is crucial to ask yourself, “What makes me special?” and “Why would a potential client seek me out?” If you’re considering opening a studio or if you currently have a studio, I encourage you to consider your personal and business vision. It is important to visualize without constraint; set yourself free of why it cannot be. You must envision your dreams personally and professionally by asking and answering these questions honestly.
Business Vision: Describe your ideal business: include the size, number of employees and services you offer. Describe your ideal work day. What do you want people to say about your business?
Combine your Personal and Business Visions: Where do your personal vision and business vision align? Where do your personal vision and business vision differ? Where will they meet?

Marketing This is typically a budget line that is underfunded or completely left off when opening a training studio. This is a Business 101 mistake! If people do not know you exist, how are they going to find you on a street that has little drive-by visibility? Create a marketing plan by addressing in detail how much you will spend, your target audience, similar businesses with which you can potentially partner, involvement in charities, and so on. Use education rather than solicitation in your ads and determine what advertising mediums you will use. For example: You may budget to spend $300 to $500 each month in print advertising, $400 to $600 annually in flyers or brochures to be used at events and as take-home materials, $2,000 a year in website maintenance, and $10,000 to $20,000 in donations to organizations (donated in services not cash). This may seem like a large chunk of change to a start-up studio, but depending upon your abilities to connect with the right people, your hard costs can be minimized to almost zero. Use your current clients as your marketing tools by helping them reach their goals; they will become your own personal billboard to sing your praises on social media and as valuable testimonials. This is a key marketing option that is essentially zero cost to you. Always be prepared as a business’s owner to promote yourself. Rehearse a 30-second “elevator pitch” and a 60-second “party pitch” to use when talking to people you meet. Have your business cards with you everywhere you go, have a way of recording information of those you meet, and be sure to follow through with them within 24 hours. Promotion and marketing are your business’s lifeline and you must keep the “buzz” going if you are to keep the business thriving.
Create a Competent Staff There are many factors to consider when it comes to staffing. First, determine if you want your trainers to be employees or independent contractors. Next, determine the realistic number of trainers you want in your space and what education, certification and experience you will require as your company’s minimum standard. If the education or experience is lacking in a potential trainer, create an internship program within your facility to bring them up to speed. Do not sacrifice your criteria in exchange for bringing on unqualified trainers just out of the need to bring in revenue for your company. This is a short-sighted decision that can have long-term negative effects.
Unseen Challenges of Running a Successful Studio and Managing a Staff As a potential or current facility owner, you have already envisioned having to worry about toilet paper, soap and washing towels on a daily basis, but this is just the beginning.
