The power of thought on your potential, prosperity and profit Have you ever noticed that when you have your eye on buying a particular car, it seems that all you see on the road is that same model? Maybe even the same color you want? Or a restaurant you’ve been thinking about trying, and now everyone you know is talking about it? I’m sure there is some psychological theory behind this phenomenon, but regardless of the reason why this happens, it illustrates how much influence our thoughts have on what becomes our reality. Marc Lebert, this issue’s Journey to Success featured professional, states it succinctly: “Our thoughts become things and what we think about most is what will happen.” We coach our clients to shift their mindset to focus on what they can eat versus what they can’t; on what they enjoy about exercise rather than what they dread, and what successes they’ve achieved instead of what they’ve failed to do. What has been the most valuable lesson you’ve learned in your business? Sales is not a dirty word. Sales or selling is essential for your survival. When I learned the skills to sell personal training it changed our business; now every client that walks out who we did not sign up for training, we believe we have done them a huge disservice... or they just made a really big mistake.

Where do you think most fitness professionals miss the mark when it comes to building a successful business? I think many miss the business growth aspect of building a business. If you don’t have consistent lead generation (marketing) then your business won’t grow. The lifeblood of any business is new and repeat customers/clients. So even if your only strategy is referrals it better be well thought out.

What career opportunities do you see emerging for fitness professionals? I am biased towards the U.S. Longevity Economy — the third largest economy in the world. If fitness professionals want to take advantage of the biggest business opportunity in the industry over the next 20 years, be prepared for the 55+ population.

You probably know Marc Lebert as the inventor of the signature yellow and black Lebert Equalizers or maybe even by his newest product, the Lebert Buddy System or the Stretch Strap. You may follow him on social media where he displays his incredible artistic talent through pictures and posts that turn the simplest updates into captivating messages. But as I discovered over a much-needed Starbucks with Marc outside the quarter-milelong exhibit floor of the IHRSA convention, there is a whole lot more to learn from Marc Lebert than the infinite ways to train on his collection of innovative fitness equipment. Marc, hailing from Ontario, Canada, told me it all started about 10 years ago when one of his long-time clients told him she wanted to learn how to do a pull-up. When the conventional training methods weren’t going to work for her, Marc challenged himself to think outside of the box for a solution… and since leaving that box, he’s never returned.

Marc asked a friend to weld him a pair of unibody handles that could be used to train the bodyweight movements of a pull-up. He then asked a group of his trainer-friends to play around with the new contraptions and see what uses and exercises they could come up with. And so were born the first Lebert Equalizers. But taking the Lebert Equalizers from concept to market wasn’t all that easy. After raising some seed capital, the growth of the Lebert Fitness brand has been organic and filled with many of the pains, frustrations and rewards of an evolving business. Marc, alongside his trusted partner John Ayton, takes accountability for virtually every part of the business – global branding, social media, marketing, trade shows, travel, speaking, designing and instructing the education and master trainer programs and, of

course, strategizing how Lebert Fitness will become a staple for every fitness professional and fitness center across the globe. And I

messages about his mission, his business and his vision, all of which I believe fitness professionals can apply in some way to their personal and professional lives. Here are just a few of “Marc’s messages” that illustrate his journey to success… Marc’s Message #1: Thoughts become things, and what you think about most of the time is what will happen The greatest lessons we can learn from others often come with understanding the comebacks from pitfalls and mistakes. When I asked Marc what mistakes or challenges he has faced he immediately responded unequivocally, “Thoughts become things… and what I think about most of the time is what will happen.” This was not his way of skirting the question or not admitting failure along his journey; quite the opposite. We talked

Marc’s Message #1: Thoughts become things, and what you think about most of the time is what will happen should not fail to mention that he is also the co-owner of Fitness Nation, a group fitness studio in Ontario, a Taekwondo black belt, an artist, a father and husband. Marc Lebert has a vision; a very clear vision. There is a strong sense of authenticity in every part of the Lebert Fitness brand, a pride that is so tangible one can’t help to feel the same enthusiasm when he shares his products and programs. In the handful of opportunities I’ve had to get to know Marc, I took away several

about the mental strength and stamina required to withstand the adversity of running a growing global company, all while being the

zone, instead of speaking he just started demonstrating his equipment. A self-admitted introvert at times, he realized that to see his vision through, he needed to tackle his fear of public speaking and practice, practice, practice. He then told me a story about a time when he and his partner were in New York City for a show. They were lugging their Equalizers up and down subway stations, across the busy streets of Manhattan and on and off trains creating quite a scene. The reason? They didn’t have enough money for a cab. Their stamina and resilience may have been tested, but never their will. Marc’s Message #3: Enjoy a beer at lunch every day So what does a typical day look like for Marc Lebert? It’s pretty apparent that Marc keeps himself busy between his business ventures, his family and his commitment to the industry. But Marc doesn’t strike me as the type to use a busy schedule as a badge

Marc’s Message #2: If at first you freeze… just try, try again face of the brand. Marc has so sharply trained his mindset to stay laser-focused on his goals, that failure is just not an option. I then asked Marc about his why; about what drives him day-in and day-out. At that same moment of the conversation, a conference attendee walked by us with a pair of Equalizers hanging over his shoulder. The timing was impeccable. He looked at me and said, “That is why I do this.” He beamed with pride as if it was the first set he had ever sold. Marc’s Message #2: If at first you freeze… just try, try again Marc recounted a few poignant stories that illustrate his perseverance and determination for success. One story he shared was about the first time he was on stage to give a presentation about his products. He completely froze. He felt so far out of his comfort

of honor. On most days, you’ll find Marc enjoying a beer at lunch. Whether the magic truly is that daily beer, or simply the fact that he takes time to recalibrate and refocus, we might all consider committing a few moments daily to step away from the daily mayhem and be present in our own journey to success. As is arguably true with most businesses, it’s not the product or the service that defines success, it’s the people behind it. Marc has an infectious energy; the kind of spirited determination that no doubt will propel Lebert Fitness to continue growing by leaps and bounds. Marc Lebert’s journey to success is a testament that authenticity and versatility breed success.

Jen Sinkler is a personal trainer at The Movement Minneapolis, an intuitive training gym she co-owns with her husband, David Dellanave. She’s a long time fitness writer and editor who writes for major magazines such as Men’s Health and Women’s Health, as well as other smaller, niche strength publications such as Performance Menu. She covers a range of health topics on her website, www.jensinkler.com, and recently launched a conditioning workout library called Lift Weights Faster as an alternative to traditional cardio pursuits.

My ideal client is open to approaching fitness in some wild ways. At The Movement Minneapolis, we use an intuitive training methodology that requires you to suspend your disbelief (until you see how well it works). And, we don’t do traditional cardio, unless you want to include it. My message is that physical strength has a way of seeping into every facet of your life, and that wonderful, empowering things start happening when you focus on strong. That said, I don’t believe there’s only one way to train. Experimentation is the name of the game — I incorporate a lot of different toys in the gym, because different methodologies and implements are going to click for different people. If I had only one way to share my message it would be through social media — Facebook and Twitter, specifically. This was a tough call, because I really enjoy the deep relationships you develop when you train clients in person, and I like the intimacy of email, as well, but I think my most valuable contributions have been around starting larger conversations, such as the one surrounding the phenomenon of the thigh gap. Social media allows more people into the same conversation. Community is everything when it comes to fitness, so building communities is my main focus. Successful messaging inspires action. It connects people to a movement, to an idea, to a suggestion and physically moves them. I have a friend whose wife says, “I don’t work out, but Jen Sinkler almost makes me want to.” I’ll know my messaging is on-point when she takes her first action, no matter how small. People follow me because I make training look fun, and I thoroughly believe it is. And, my background as a fitness writer allows me to present ideas in a way that feels accessible, and makes people willing to try new things.

Michael Cunico 1. INFLUENCE From the first moment meeting a new client, a successful fitness professional is self-aware of how they project themselves. They practice open body language and choose a tone of language that mirrors the client’s. These are factors to consider even prior to the initial client meeting to set the foundation of influencing a person to change.

2. INCITE How can we commence the process of change without connecting with a client? People generally like people that are like them; a successful fitness professional finds commonality to begin the process of building trust. Pay attention to the style of questioning you are using to facilitate the flow of information. Open-ended questions allow the individual to give you more information, and in the process as they discuss themselves openly, they become more confident and relaxed. This is the start of inciting change.

3. EXPLORE

he fitness industry is constantly evolving. The question is: does the changing landscape allow for fitness professionals to keep up? Global megatrends like obesity and an aging population mean that improving health is high on the agenda of conversation, both around the water cooler and in political circles. This has increased the demand for fitness services and has highlighted the need for fitness professionals to be at the top of their game. This game extends beyond your ability to effectively cue the perfect overhead squat or help maintain healthy body fat percentages. Steve Jobs changed the computer industry in the ’90s when he delivered Mac computers; computers that were beautiful, and you actually wanted to have one in your living room. The emotional response that Jobs was able to attach to a computer, previously renowned for being a beige box, changed consumer electronics forever. It was no longer enough to have a good product; the product needed to be beautiful, effective and illicit an emotional response from the consumer. Like Steve Jobs, fitness professionals need to have the ability to emotionally engage with their client to ensure they retain their loyalty. Listed below are seven skills fitness professionals should aim to master to successfully gain loyal clients in the new era of the fitness industry.

A fitness professional’s most important quality is arguably the ability to uncover a person’s true motive for commencing an exercise program. Anthony Robbins simply refers to this as the ‘why.’ Find the why and you’ll find the way. What is their true underlying motive? We know that at the core, it is not weight loss or muscle tone. Mastering the previous two skills of influencing and inciting change should give you the permission to now explore an individual’s deeper desire to change. How will they feel when they reach their goal? What will change when they achieve their goal? Ask questions that may open conversation based on true motives. Express empathy here by actively listening and not passing judgment; support self-efficacy by asking them to discuss what they want to commit to moving forward. Finally, notice that the questions are stated as: ‘when they reach their goal’ as opposed to ‘if they reach their goal.’ Reframe negativity and encourage positive comments.

4. EXECUTE The ability to execute comes down to our ability to showcase our practical skills. We need options to which a client can adhere and show improvement quickly in order to maintain motivation and compliance. Executing the best program for your client is only possible when they


are actually in front of you, so setting small, achievable benchmarks for your client to achieve is critical. If required, focus your initial training program around improving these benchmarks specifically — this will provide early progress and will support longer-term motivation. Executive function is a mental process that ensures if a client doesn’t see a result from what they are currently doing within 12 weeks, they are unlikely to stay motivated. This is why a smoker will see warning labels on cigarettes for years but still continue to smoke. Yet they will quit immediately after having a stroke or heart attack – they can now link their actions to an immediate outcome. Effective execution on the side of the fitness professional will help the client experience immediate outcomes with a greater likelihood of remaining motivated longer-term.

5. EXCITE With more than 270,000 fitness professionals and more than 30,000 fitness facilities in the United States, what will differentiate your service or product to ensure it is not simply a commodity? Referred to as your unique selling point (USP), successful fitness professionals differentiate their service like Steve Jobs did. Seth Godin refers to this as your Purple Cow – a purple cow in the middle of a paddock on a lonely drive will turn your head and give people something to talk about. What will be your purple cow? What will excite your current and future clients?

6. BE ENIGMATIC Superheroes are enigmatic; the last Batman movie finishes and we are immediately wondering if there will be a Robin movie. Henry Cavill finishes the latest Superman movie walking into the Daily Planet, leaving us waiting for the next movie in the series. Fitness professionals can leave their clients wanting more as well. Use future talk when discussing a member or client’s goals, programming, future direction or new training opportunities. Use a systemized customer relationship manager (CRM) program to stay in contact with your customers, including a social media strategy to keep your clients wanting more.

7. BE ENLIGHTENED Successful fitness professionals remain open-minded in an industry that often tends to polarize. Do you have the commitment to read source material and try different strategies to help people achieve their goals, rather than take a one-size-fits-all approach? Are you looking at the coming trends such as the trend of wearable technology and ready to embrace a fitness consumer who will have more fitness data and graphs than they will probably ever need? A forward-looking fitness professional will educate themselves and be prepared for working alongside these trends rather than resist them. Clients will need an enlightened trainer to make sense of the industry as it evolves.

EQUIPMENT IDEAL FOR YOUR STUDIO Building out your new studio on time and on budget

Getting ready to own and build out your first fitness studio is an exciting time. There is so much to get done before your doors open and lives can be transformed. From finding the perfect space to preparing marketing materials to purchasing equipment, opening a new studio can be confusing and a bit overwhelming. You want to be sure that every investment you make is the right one for your business; the good news is building out your gym doesn’t have to be as scary or costly as you might think. With the fitness industry making a huge shift towards functional training, long gone are the days of needing to purchase high-priced items such elliptical machines and treadmills. In fact, research proves we can get the same, if not better results without them. Before you run to your favorite fitness equipment store or website, here are a few important factors to consider: First, what is your equipment budget? Think one to two months out. Keep in mind that you can always add more equipment as your clientele grows; in fact, this is probably one of the best ways to keep your members engaged and challenged. Second, who is your target market, or your ideal client? You want to consider the equipment that will help them reach their goals. Finally, consider your space and map out how everything will fit in a way that will maximize the available square footage. After you’ve considered the tasks above, here

is a sample 12-month guideline on how you can build out your facility in a manner that is cost-effective, and still give you the most bang for your buck and help get your clients stellar results.

MONTHS 1-3: KEEP IT SIMPLE The first couple months of operating your training facility are crucial. You will be working with your clients to help them lose weight, become healthier and stronger. Results are critical because, at the end of the day, that is why they come to you. Consider opening up with this equipment: DUMBBELLS Dumbbells or a set of adjustable dumbbells such as PowerBlock are pretty much a no-brainer. There are other fancy weights out there but a good set of dumbbells should be one of the first pieces you invest in. It’s not necessary to have every set ranging from two to 50 pounds. Go back and think again about your ideal client and what they will need to be successful. You can always add on as your business grows and your clients become stronger. As a bonus, this is a great way to show them their progress as they graduate to using heavier weights. SUSPENSION TRAINERS Suspension trainers, such as TRX, are fantastic because of the various ways you can incorporate them into your clients’ workout. Suspension trainers can be integrated to increase cardio, strength and

flexibility. Another benefit is they don’t take up much space. Three to five straps is a great place to start; you don’t necessarily need to invest in a whole wall. Circuit training and partner work will alleviate not having enough for every single person. SLIDERS Sliders, such as Val-slides or furniture movers, are inexpensive tools that are great because they can take any bodyweight or abdominal exercise up a notch. BATTLE ROPES Battle ropes are not only challenging but also add an element of fun with so many ways to incorporate them. Just like the suspension trainers, starting off with three to five ropes should be enough. JUMP ROPES Jump ropes are a simple, yet effective tool that hardly take up space and can be used as a warm-up, finisher or even during the workout to mix it up. Never discount incorporating simple yet effective bodyweight exercises. As fitness professionals we get star struck with the latest and greatest equipment, but for our clients, sometimes less is more. Movements like squats, burpees and push-ups can fill your workout in addition to the above-mentioned equipment.

SANDBAGS Sandbags are really making their way into the mainstream and have proven to be very versatile and can be used by all fitness levels. They are easy to store and clean, which is an added bonus. KETTLEBELLS Depending on your level of expertise, this is also a great time to introduce kettlebells. It’s a good idea to have a weight range from light to a bit heavier until your clients become more comfortable using them, but these are great for training the entire body. STABILITY BALLS Stability balls add variety to basic movements, especially core exercises. SLAM BALLS Slam balls can also be introduced at this time, or even earlier if desired. There is a wide variety on the market — from

light to heavy, ones that bounce and ones that don’t. Regardless of the type you choose to integrate, they are a great training tool that your clients will greatly benefit from, not to mention they add an element of play to the workout. STEP-UP/PLYO BOXES Step-up/plyo boxes can also be implemented as their main benefit is adding height. Step-ups, box jumps or even substituting as a training bench. There are some that can be stacked to save room and store easily.

MONTHS 6-12: MAKE IT UNIQUE It’s always a great idea to up your stock of more popular equipment and increase the weights that you currently have to keep your clients engaged and excited about working out with you. When you’re ready to invest in new equipment to keep your training unique, here is a list of equipment that will continue to add value to the programs you offer: squat racks, pull-up bars, parrallettes such as Lebert Equalizers, sleds and agility ladders.

Now that you hopefully have all the basic tools to give your clients an unforgettable training experience, continue to look further and add more tools to your equipment repertoire. Braided Xertube

Standing row in a lunge stance

Alternating chest press in a split stance

For beginners, stand in a large split stance; for intermediate, drop into a lunge position similar to picture; for advanced, begin in a full lunge position. As you press forward with just one hand, focus on your core; stabilizing the one-arm press moves your body off-balance. For a more advanced working level, instead of alternating one arm at a time, use reciprocating movements so as one arm is pressing forward the other is returning. Be sure to alternate your front foot between sets.

Step360 deadlift

The Step360 allows for various placements of the exertube to increase the resistance. Be sure to use an exertube with the appropriate resistance for a deadlift. The Step360 will teach people as if they are lifting with unequal force. This forces people to realize their left and right sides have to work symmetrically. This method of fundamental training is helpful before transitioning to heavier deadlifts on the floor.

Step360 lateral raise

Add a balance challenge to the traditional lateral raise. This will help to slow down the lateral raises, as moving too quickly will throw a client off-balance on the Step360. The goal should be to remain still and quiet on the Step360, focusing on slow and intense repetitions. Lateral raises can be done at various angles lateral or out to the front (as pictured, approximately 45 degrees).

Step360 lunge with overhead press Step360 bicep curl

Add a unique twist to bicep curls with exertubing on the Step360 to add stability and balance to the exercise. This is an appropriate way to work on upper body strength while training lower body balance and coordination.

Position yourself in a lunge stance. Be sure to have the foot on the Step360 in the center. Start with the exertubing at shoulder/chest height then press overhead. Your palms can be facing each other as pictured or facing forward. For an advanced challenge, alternate pressing one arm overhead.
