Peregrine Project Poland – tree-nesting Peregrines of Europe

Janusz Sielicki , Sławomir Sielicki Society for the Protection of Wild Animals „FALCON”

The last breeding attempt was in Barycz Valley in 1964

Reason for the decline was found

Wide DDT usage which affected egg shells, which collapsed under brooding birds

Falconers created techniques for breeding Peregrines, widely used later on for many birds of prey species

One of the techniqes is egg pulling, other is re-clutching

Instinct to feed young is strong, so it easy to put with parents even chicks of different age

345 released , in it 291 in forests

124 born wild

The first attempt to breed was in 1998 in Warsaw

We install nest boxes in areas where Peregrines are seen regularly, mainly on buldings and chimneys

This species has a large range, with an estimated global Extent of Occurrence of 10,000,000 km2. It has a large global population estimated to be 10,000-100,000 individuals (Ferguson-Lees et al. 2001). Global population trends have not been quantified, but populations appear to be stable (Ferguson-Lees et al. 2001) so the species is not believed to approach the thresholds for the population decline criterion of the IUCN Red List (i.e. declining more than 30% in ten years or three generations). Range Description: For these reasons, the species is evaluated as Least Concern. [The tree-nesting population in central and eastern Europe declined from c. 4,000 pairs to extirpation, before restoration efforts in Germany and Poland returned it to c. 20 pairs. Significant further efforts are needed to fully restore it across its former range, which included Germany, Poland, Russia, Belarus and the Baltic States (European Peregrine Falcon Working Group in litt. 2007)].
