A MESSAGE

From Cardinal Seán

Dear Friends in Christ: So many of our parishes, schools, and other ministries made it through the challenges of the past year with the knowledge that their future is more secure through the generosity of donors like you. Your planned gift is an example of the importance of planning ahead, and I cannot thank you enough for your thoughtful generosity and long-term commitment to our Archdiocese of Boston. This report is a testament to all our donors who made their parish, school, or other ministry a priority in their giving, both now and in the future. The legacy formed through your gifts is one that will ensure the future of our Church as we continue to serve those in need, those learning and practicing our faith, and those who bring Christ’s presence to a world in need of His love. As you read through this report, may you feel tremendous pride in the assistance and hope you are providing to so many. For your goodness to our Church, I am deeply grateful. With gratitude for your support and the assurance of my prayers for you and all your loves ones, I remain, Devotedly yours in Christ,

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

Anna-Marie Ferraro Anna-Marie has been an active participant in her faith for her entire life and has shared her generosity with many different ministries and organizations within the Archdiocese of Boston. She is a thoughtful and kind donor, always willing to make a gift and make a difference. Recently, she took steps to ensure she could continue to help others long into the future by setting up planned gifts in her will. As a parishioner at St. Eulalia’s in Winchester since 1975, she has served the parish community in countless ways. She has fond memories of accompanying her pastors to lector at the CatholicTV Masses and spent time getting to know both the leadership and seminarians at Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary in Weston. Through her planned gifts, Anna-Marie ensured future funding for the causes that have played such an important part of her faith life. She is leaving a legacy of love for her parish, CatholicTV, Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary, and ministries of the Archdiocese of Boston. We are so grateful for her support and her dedication to the future of our Church.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

Felicia L. Wilczenski, Ed.D. For Felicia, the benefits of making a planned gift to the Archdiocese of Boston were threefold: to honor her parents, to create a legacy that would live beyond her own life, and to do so while receiving personal income during her retirement.

“The great thing is I get what I need during my lifetime, and then after I am gone, that money will go towards helping others. It’s a win-win!” - Felicia Wilczenski

Felicia has made multiple planned gifts, the most meaningful being the creation of the Louis and Genevieve Wilczenski Endowment Fund in honor of her parents, which will support elder and childcare services within the Archdiocese of Boston. She included the endowment fund in her will so that it can continue to help children and the elderly far into the future. Now retired from her role as interim dean of UMass Boston’s College of Education and Human Development, Felicia has started receiving income from the charitable gift annuities that she set up years ago. She will continue receiving that income during her lifetime, and then it will be given to Catholic causes that are close to her heart.

IMPACT HIGHLIGHT

Roxbury’s Mission Grammar School is Thriving Thanks to Expansion Opened in 1889, Mission Grammar School was in need of extensive updates and larger facilities, especially as they prepared to welcome students from the St. Patrick’s School community. The pandemic made those updates critical for the safe opening of school in the Fall of 2020. With 70% of Mission Grammar students coming from lowincome families and with many parents working in hospitals or as first responders, it was crucial that the school was prepared for in-person learning. In addition to six new classrooms, a brand-new STEM lab, and an outdoor playground, last-minute changes were incorporated before completion of the project to ensure safety during the pandemic. These included a state-of-the-art ventilation system, touchless sinks and soap dispensers, and social distancing signage and markers. Thanks to Inspiring Hope donors, Mission Grammar has also been able to renovate and continue to welcome children as young as three months old. Updated technology has been especially helpful this school year across all efforts. In a world that is still reeling from the pandemic, school president Aliece Dutson likes to say that Mission Grammar School and its scholars are “thriving not just surviving.”

When Mission Grammar School in Roxbury received a grant through the Archdiocese’s Inspiring Hope capital campaign to expand their campus, they had no idea the expansion would happen at such a monumental time. CATHOLIC COMMUNITY FUND

Archdiocese’s “Mother Church” Continues Caring for Those in Need The Cathedral of the Holy Cross underwent major renovations thanks to the Inspiring Hope capital campaign. As the “Mother Church” of our Archdiocese, and home to Boston’s Archbishop, the Cathedral is a beacon of hope to the surrounding community, serving a tremendously diverse population in Boston’s South End through countless programs. Some of these programs include: ■ Serving families through a food pantry

■ Offering help to homeless families transitioning from shelters to permanent housing ■ Providing free health services through the Cathedral Cares Clinic

■ Serving as an emergency back-up shelter for the Pine Street Inn and Boston Health Care for the Homeless ■ Operating an off-site shelter for victims of human trafficking in collaboration with the City of Boston ■ Hosting weekly AA meetings In addition to the above, and all that the parish does for the community, there are also 21 weekly Masses celebrated in four languages. We are blessed that donors to Inspiring Hope helped ensure this historic building will be there for years to come, not only to practice our faith, but to serve our brothers and sisters in need.

In 2020, the Cathedral of the Holy Cross renovation received the Preservation Achievement Award from the Boston Preservation Alliance. 16

IMPACT HIGHLIGHT

Providing Funding for Parishes to Create Virtual Faith Formation Programs When the pandemic hit, many parishes were well-prepared to pivot to the virtual world to keep parishioners connected to their faith. For St. Patrick, St. Peter and Holy Family Parishes in Dorchester however, the challenge was significant, as they serve a diverse, multi-lingual, and technologically underserved community. In the early days of the pandemic, these parishes struggled to continue faith formation programs for 650 children in grades 1 through 10 without the ability to gather in person.

With a grant from the Catholic Community Fund through the John J. and Margaret M. Flatley Fund, the parishes now have the needed resources – laptops, cameras, and technical assistance – to continue their faith formation programs more effectively. The grant enables the parishes to design a program that also engages and supports parents in the learning process. It also gives them access to best practices in child protection safety protocols to help parishes and parishioners understand the safety issues facing children in the virtual world.

“This community, which faces disparity and inequity every day, was among the most impacted by the pandemic. This grant helps us adapt to the times and the way of the future. I am so grateful – we could never have done this on our own.” − Fr. John Currie, Pastor

Home for Little Wanderers’ Safe at Home Program The Safe at Home program supports children on the verge of out-of-home placement due to a mental or behavioral health crisis to enable them to remain at home.

The nation’s oldest nonprofit child and family services agency, the Home for Little Wanderers works to ensure the healthy behavioral, emotional, social, and educational development and physical well-being of children and families living in at-risk circumstances. 22

CATHOLIC COMMUNITY FUND

Funded in part through a grant from the Catholic Health Foundation, Safe at Home staff members work with families to provide intensive, collaborative, home-based treatment centered around developing strengths and skills to provide a safe environment and prevent the need for placement in a group home or mental health facility. Through weekly or bi-weekly meetings, families learn how to improve their communication, recognize triggers before a crisis erupts, and develop ways to effectively handle crises that do occur. The process is a long one and requires individualized plans for each case.

Many of these families are dealing with poverty, food insecurity, cultural issues, and/or deep trauma. The pandemic presented new challenges to families already overwhelmed and under-resourced and forced Safe at Home staff members to transition to a remote, telehealth environment. During the pandemic, the program staff went above and beyond clinical therapy – not only providing sensory tools to help maximize telehealth sessions, but also delivering food to help families dealing with job loss and food insecurity. As reduced restrictions allow a return to more traditional visits, the program staff is preparing for the toll the pandemic has had on both families and clinicians. They continue to develop treatments and practices that will adapt to an evergrowing need.

Stephen Ministries at St. Francis Parish, Dracut In any community, addressing the individual needs for spiritual and emotional support extends beyond the ability of priests and parish staffs alone. Parishioners at St. Francis Parish in Dracut have historically been eager to do their part to help one another and were excited to learn of a new option: Stephen Ministries. A St. Louis-based Christian education organization, Stephen Ministries equips congregation members—called Stephen Ministers—to provide high-quality, one-to-one, Christ-centered care to people in the parish and the community experiencing life difficulties. With the aid of a grant from the Catholic Health Foundation, three parishioners were able to participate in a 10-week in-depth training course to become Stephen Ministry Leaders. They, in turn, trained 17 additional parishioners to become Stephen Ministers.

24

CATHOLIC COMMUNITY FUND

These parishioners, from a variety of different backgrounds and experience, met weekly via Zoom with trainees from across the country over the course of six months. Through readings, class discussion, roleplaying, and devotion groups, they are prepared to provide one-to-one care to people dealing with issues such as serious illness, death of a loved one, depression, loneliness, discouragement, and challenges due to aging. As Stephen Ministers, they are able to help those they care for experience God’s love in a tangible way.

“We are blessed to be part of a wonderful parish community,” said Sharon Coram, who serves as the referrals coordinator for the program. “We know that God is the cure-giver, but we are grateful to be equipped to be ‘caregivers’ to others who are suffering emotionally and spiritually.”

IMPACT HIGHLIGHT

Franciscan Children’s Kids Healthy Minds Initiative The prevalence of mental health issues among young people in our country is truly staggering. To help address this crisis, Franciscan Children’s and the Archdiocese of Boston teamed up to develop the Kids Healthy Minds Initiative (KHMI), an innovative program designed to increase early detection of mental illness in youth while decreasing the stigma surrounding seeking help. Many Catholic schools do not have the professional resources needed to address their students’ mental health issues. KHMI clinicians work closely with teachers and staff at Catholic schools to help them recognize when a child needs support, identify resources, and consult on specific cases.

The initiative develops and presents programs to educate both teachers and families on youth mental health issues. For many students, the pandemic presented many additional needs for support. The loss of connectedness and trauma related to the consequences of COVID-19 in their families or community will present ongoing mental health challenges. As a completely grantfunded program, the support of the Catholic Health Foundation enables the KHMI team to continue to develop materials, hold education workshops, and provide the expertise of mental health professionals to help address these critical issues, particularly in underresourced schools.

An astounding 20% of youth in the U.S. have been diagnosed with a mental health problem while countless others suffer from undiagnosed and/or untreated mental illness. 26
