Catholic Community Fund Donor Spotlights

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

Felicia L. Wilczenski, Ed.D.

“The great thing is I get what I need during my lifetime, and then after I am gone, that money will go towards helping others. It’s a win-win!”

- Felicia Wilczenski For Felicia, the benefits of making a planned gift to the Archdiocese of Boston were threefold: to honor her parents, to create a legacy that would live beyond her own life, and to do so while receiving personal income during her retirement.

Felicia has made multiple planned gifts, the most meaningful being the creation of the Louis and Genevieve Wilczenski Endowment Fund in honor of her parents, which will support elder and childcare services within the Archdiocese of Boston. She included the endowment fund in her will so that it can continue to help children and the elderly far into the future.

Now retired from her role as interim dean of UMass Boston’s College of Education and Human Development, Felicia has started receiving income from the charitable gift annuities that she set up years ago. She will continue receiving that income during her lifetime, and then it will be given to Catholic causes that are close to her heart.

Catholic Legacy Society

The Catholic Legacy Society honors those who have named the Archdiocese of Boston—or one of its parishes, schools, or other ministries—as a beneficiary in their will or trust, retirement account, charitable gift annuity or charitable trust, life insurance policy, or through the establishment of an endowed fund. The members of this special society are creating an infrastructure of support that will make our many Catholic ministries stronger, sustainable, and better equipped to serve future generations.

When Mission Grammar School in Roxbury received a grant through the Archdiocese’s Inspiring Hope capital campaign to expand their campus, they had no idea the expansion would happen at such a monumental time.

IMPACT HIGHLIGHT

Roxbury’s Mission Grammar School is Thriving Thanks to Expansion

Opened in 1889, Mission Grammar School was in need of extensive updates and larger facilities, especially as they prepared to welcome students from the St. Patrick’s School community. The pandemic made those updates critical for the safe opening of school in the Fall of 2020. With 70% of Mission Grammar students coming from lowincome families and with many parents working in hospitals or as first responders, it was crucial that the school was prepared for in-person learning.

In addition to six new classrooms, a brand-new STEM lab, and an outdoor playground, last-minute changes were incorporated before completion of the project to ensure safety during the pandemic. These included a state-of-the-art ventilation system, touchless sinks and soap dispensers, and social distancing signage and markers.

Thanks to Inspiring Hope donors, Mission Grammar has also been able to renovate and continue to welcome children as young as three months old. Updated technology has been especially helpful this school year across all efforts. In a world that is still reeling from the pandemic, school president Aliece Dutson likes to say that Mission Grammar School and its scholars are “thriving not just surviving.”
