PRESIDENT’S REPORT November 2015 To All Covenant Churches Dear Friends in Christ, As you gather for your congregational Annual Meeting, let me say I am so deeply grateful for the partnership we share in this movement we call the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC). You are one among 875 congregations within our 11 regional conferences here in the United States and Canada. We are growing, multi-ethnic, multi-generational family of churches with lots of heart for making a difference together. And together, we impact over 2.5 million lives at home and in some 40 countries on five continents. Our executive minister of Love Mercy and Do Justice, Cecilia Williams, likes to say that our call as believers is to “move the needle for the kingdom of God every day.” In the ECC, we seek to do this through our five mission priorities:

Start and Strengthen Churches, Make and Deepen Disciples, Develop Leaders, Love Mercy and Do Justice, and Serve Globally

We are humbled by what God is doing in each of these areas. Because of your suport and God’s faithfulness, real lives in real places are being touched by the hope of Christ every single day. Find out more on our website at covchurch.org. In particular, watch the video “Moving the Needle,” an informative and inspiring overview of how God is at work. As you reflect on the many ways that God is using your congregation, remember that one way is through this important partnership, and your partnership with your regional conference. I am grateful to serve with you. Together, may we go deeper in Christ and further in mission. In Christ,

GARY B. WALTER PRESIDENT

Hope Covenant Church

A message from our Chairman ‘‘

Dear Members and Friends of Hope, God’s blessings and grace were in abundance for Hope Covenant Church during 2015. In a year where we celebrated the well-deserved retirement of our Senior Pastor and promotion of our Associate Pastor (accepting a call to become Senior Pastor in Northern California), it was amazing to experience God’s provision of a talented Transition Lead Pastor, Scott Oas, and Interim Associate Pastor, Timm Jackson. While we are sad to see Pastors Duane & Sheri Cross and Brandon & Kelly Hovey depart, we give thanks for their great service and many great memories. We are prayerfully excited about how God will bless others in the next chapter of their lives. Once again it is evident that God’s blessing is upon Hope with the addition of many new families, growth in our ministries, meeting our financial and physical needs and most importantly the number of people who committed their lives to Christ. 2015 marked the hiring of our first ever full-time Student Ministries Pastor, Anthony Espindola. His leadership is already impacting growth in student’s lives and our student ministry. This is a great compliment and next step for youth transitioning from our thriving Children’s Ministry.

Once again it is evident that God’s blessing is upon Hope with the addition of many new families, growth in our ministries, meeting our financial and physical needs and most importantly the number of people who committed their lives to Christ.

‘‘

Highlights of 2015 included several international and in-state (Navajo) mission trips and community service events. Once again, Easter in the Park, Harvest Festival, and Christmas Eve Services made powerful connections with our community and resulted in many people coming to Christ. Looking forward into 2016, I truly believe God has great plans to use Hope to expand His kingdom. He has equipped us with highly effective staff, many committed leaders and volunteers and the strongest financial position in our history. It would not be possible without the dedicated and faithful support and prayers of our congregation. My prayer for each one of us is to trust Christ and allow Him to use us and change us in a powerful way in 2016. Please pray fervently for Hope Covenant Church as we launch our search for our next Senior Pastor. Pray for wisdom and direction for our search committee, pray for strength and protection for our Pastors, Elders, and leaders. Pray for each other and for the ministries and guests of Hope. Continue to stand together, lift each other up, and connect with each other. Find a ministry to serve and join a small group. And if you know of a neighbor, co-worker, friend or family member that does not know Christ, pray for them, invest in them, and invite them to Hope. On behalf of the pastoral team and the board of elders, it is an honor to serve each of you. Thank you for being part of Hope and for your faithful service and support of our ministries.

May His peace be with you,

ANDY CARY

PASTOR SCOTT’S REPORT ‘‘

With so much change, what’s unchanging?

“To those who were to receive what he promised, God wanted to make it very clear that he would never change his purpose; so he added his vow to the promise. There are these two things, then, that cannot change and about which God cannot lie. So we who have found safety with him are greatly encouraged to hold firmly to the hope placed before us. We have this hope as an anchor for our lives. It is safe and sure,…” - Hebrews 6:17-19a

‘‘

This year, maybe more than any other in the history of Hope Covenant Church, could be described by the word “change”. Did you notice in the verses above from Hebrews that, “he (God) would never change his purpose.” God’s unchanging purpose is that we would find safety in Him and that we would be encouraged by the fact that our hope is in Him and that this hope is solid, secure and sure. Our hope in God is to be the anchor for our soul!

The people of Hope have stepped up to take so many of the leadership and ministry responsibilities to keep us moving forward. We have wonderful leaders that serve as Elders, Deacons, small group leaders, prayer and care partners, teachers, facility crew, and ministry connectors (MOYO, Hope Home, San Marcos school, StreetlightUSA, ACTS, A.V.A., Navajo, Turnkey, etc.) as well as specialized ministries: Christmas morning - Serving the homeless, Tea parties, Boutique, etc.

If you have been a part of Hope for any amount of time you’ve seen change. Some are dramatic changes... the saying of “good-bye” to Pastor Duane and his wife Sheri after 15 years of faithful, fruitful and loving ministry. It is impossible to find words that express our gratitude for the impact they have had on the life and growth of this place.

The Pastoral Search Team has embarked on the challenging task of pursuing the next lead pastor for Hope Covenant Church. This is a huge task that needs our prayers, support and patience as they move ahead. Please dedicate yourself to praying for them and the process.

Pastor Brandon and Kelly with their girls launched out to a new ministry position to advance God’s kingdom in California. You cannot help but feel the loss of their committed and gifted leadership. This year saw the addition of new staff members to the team. Anthony Espindola came to Hope as the new Youth Pastor in June. Associate Pastor Timm Jackson and his wife Karen came on board in July. And I arrived on the scene at the end of September as the Transitional Pastor. It is an honor to serve with the staff that we have already had in place. Pastor Barb continues to lead, train, guide and disciple our entire Children’s ministry area with faithful volunteers. Pastor Ryan’s leadership of our Worship Arts, tech and music teams helps to advance our corporate worship experiences. Richelle serves as the office administrator and holds together our internal workings as an organization. Mike continues to clean, scrub and vacuum the entire plant. Ron oversees the facility upkeep and keeps us in working order. 06

Hope Covenant Church

I’m sure I’ve left out many more very significant avenues of serving and expanding God’s kingdom that we are a part of here at Hope. In the short time I have been at Hope, since mid-September, my life has changed. It has been changed by the impact of you, the Hope family. I am excited about where God will lead us to further serve Him in this new year! Thank you for your willingness to grow in Christ and serve Him. Together we are a part of His unchanging plan to share His good news with our world.

Our Offer WORSHIP

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Associate Pastor of Worship Arts. Laura, Aislin, Sabina, Nels and I are deeply grateful for this church. Since my employment three and a half years ago, it has been a tremendous privilege to work and serve with a passionate staff and so many committed volunteers. As a worship team, we have grown in so many ways throughout the past year. Each week our team is challenged through new music and I am amazed at the hard work, dedication, and growth that continue to take place. Over the course of 2015 I am proud to say that we have grown individually, but also as a team! Each week a lot of prayer, time, energy, and effort go into planning our worship experience. New songs, old hymns, lighting, sound, stage designs, videos, and liturgical elements are some of the means used to encourage people who attend our services to be participants instead of spectators. It’s my hope that our worship experience would engages both non-believers and seasoned Christ followers with an opportunity to respond to God through authentic worship.

“When the Christian community gathers for worship on the first day of the week, memory and hope fill the day… In remembering and anticipating, faith is awakened, hope born, and love stirred. God is praised and our covenant is made strong.” - C. John Weborg 10

Hope Covenant Church

KEY OUTCOMES: X Unique stage designs for sermon series X Purchased new sound board to improve sound quality in the auditorium X Hosted James Reams & the Barnstormers for the Harvest Festival X Welcomed Jr. High students to play with the worship team during Sunday services Looking forward to 2016, I am hopeful that this will be a monumental year, marked by tremendous growth. Each week is an opportunity to grow into stronger teams that more skillfully lead our congregation in passionate worship. Finally, I would like to say “Thank You” to Hope Covenant Church. I am constantly humbled by my shortcomings, but grateful to those who offer encouraging words, love, and support. What a privilege it has been to serve along side the many Kingdomminded people who sacrificially give of their time and energy to volunteer with our worship ministry. It is a blessing to serve at Hope Covenant Church. To God be the Glory!

KEY OUTCOMES:

V Tumbleweed Easter egg hunt was another great event V 70 + children and 20 + team members each night for our Wild West VBS --- our largest group ever! V 50 children participated in our “Great Christmas Giveaway” musical program. We collected playground toys for San Marcos Elementary School as part of this event V Average of 80 children from birth to 5th grade each Sunday V 16-20 volunteers who served 1 or more of our 10 classes every Sunday V 16 Children’s Ministry students and/or team members were baptized in 2015

CHILDREN 2015 is another remarkable year at Hope. So many great new friends and lots of new little ones to fill the nursery (we are blessed!). The children’s offerings this year helped to buy shoes and school supplies as well as playground balls & toys for the children of San Marcos. They brought in 46 boxes of cereal for the Matthew’s Crossing Food Bank and made 20 care packages for the homeless. We at Hope are blessed with a wonderful and faithful Children’s Ministry team that serves the Children of Hope every week. They invest weekly in the lives of children that will go to a time we may not see. Preparing them to carry God’s word and love to the world in the future is an honor for us. As we look to 2016, we pray God will continue to bless us. We look forward with hope as we wait to see what God will do.

YOUTH Since I have been on staff at Hope as the Youth Pastor, a lot of changes have occurred. Hope Covenant Church is currently experiencing a drastic period of transition, but the leaders of this church have rallied together to make the transition as smooth as possible. This rallying has expanded its reach into the hearts of the students of Hope as well. On my first Sunday at Hope there were only six students present. After a shared vision of creating a welcoming environment and expressing the loving heart of Jesus, the students have invited many of their friends into the ministry. Currently, after the students pursued their friends at school and beyond, the weekly attendance is around 15-20 students on average. The format of each Sunday service and midweek program is a balance of exciting, fun games as well as an in-depth look at what the bible says about being a follower of Jesus. The students have done an incredible job of buying into the heart of Jesus and sharing that with their peers. For the first year of my employment at Hope as the Youth Pastor, my ultimate goal has been – and will be – to build lasting relationships with the students and volunteers under my care. Looking forward, we aim to continue to see spiritual growth among the students as they chase deeper relationships with Christ. The future is bright at Hope. With Winter Camp coming up shortly, and students continuing to invite their friends to the ministry, there are many things to be striving for. Please join us in praying for the students in the youth group as they grow in Christ weekly.

Blessings,

ANTHONY ESPINDOLA

GROUPS In July, Karen & I returned to Hope Covenant Church to assist in the transition of the Associate Pastor and lead pastor as they moved on to different roles. My responsibilities have been to oversee the ministry of Outreach to the community and Inreach to the family of Hope. Both areas have been interesting and challenging in this time of transition. OUTREACH

My continuing ministry with the Deacon team and their care of Hope people along with Beth Sanders and the Hope Care team providing meals, transportation, and other relevant needs. Additionally, I have served the Small Group Ministry with the organizing of 10 groups and the solicitation of nearly 80 participants in those group.

Our ministry to San Marcos Elementary School has centered through the able leadership of Kelly Wight and many others. We had teacher assistants, we provide classroom supplies and gave nearly 300 pairs of shoes for the children to begin school the past year.

Oversight of Guest Services (Usher & Greeter) Teams with Gay Zawatski has been to sharpen the focus and friendliness of the ministry of hospitality.

In 2015, our Human Trafficking Ministry held two events to support StreetLightUSA. We had our 3rd Annual Black & White Ball in November which had a huge increase in attendance and visibility for our church. We also put together a Christmas Day Dinner for StreetLightUSA residents with volunteers from Hope who signed up to donate or bring a dish to the girls at StreetLightUSA on Christmas Day.

- Attended and assisted in Men’s Retreat - Met with and helped coordinate ACTS Ministry - Encouraged Sunday prayer teams led by Jim & Sheryl Blackburn - Facilitated Friday morning Men’s Group - Multiple hospital visits and counseling sessions

Christmas morning found nearly 100 Hope people under the leadership of Scott & Karen Tonkinson and Karyl Greenlaw who packed Christmas dinners for homeless people in the greater Phoenix metroplex. Navajo ministry continues with the able leadership of Jim & Debbie Selland and several others. We are able to assist local pastors and the churches with facility repairs and even Vacation Bible School for churches of the reservation.

Our Hope Memorial Garden initiative was visualized & started to take shape through the help of our committed volunteers at Hope. We also had our parking lot repair and cracks sealed sometime 2nd quarter of 2015. Towards the end of the year, our 10+ year old fire alarm panel has been sending trouble signals to the city’s fire department so we have requested replacement of the equipment. Moving forward to 2016, we are expecting several more improvements in our church home facilities. We encourage everyone to support us in any way they can.

MEN’S MINISTRY

Hope Men’s Ministry is intended to draw the men of Hope into closer relationships with each other. The goal is to encourage all of them to accept greater responsibility for leadership within their families and the congregation. Participation in small groups, accountability partnerships and volunteer activities are stressed and strongly encouraged. We held a very successful retreat at Tonto Rim Christian Camp during the weekend of September 11 – 13, 2015. Thirty-nine men attended the annual retreat and all feedback after the event was very positive. We have already secured reservations for the same venue for the weekend of September 9 -11, 2016. Our intent is to recruit throughout the year and convince fifty men to attend this year. Planning for the retreat will begin in January.

WOMEN’S MINISTRY

During 2015, Hope Women’s Ministry had various classes/ events to help the women of Hope to connect and grow. We also conducted various fundraisers to help offset the cost of our ministry to Hope’s ladies and their friends. • Diva Desserts – In 2015, we met several times on a Friday night in one of our homes, and we shared coffee and dessert while listening to a personal story from one of our Hope women. This get-together was also used as a platform for announcing upcoming events, bringing in newcomers, and getting to know each other better. • Prayer Conference – In May, we held a women’s prayer conference, including breakfast, lunch, and lots of encouragement and suggestions for a dynamic prayer life. About twenty women attended. • Ladies’ Christmas Luncheon – In December, about forty ladies met at Mimi’s for lunch, holiday games, and social interaction. • Women’s Bible Studies – We continued to offer Bible studies throughout the year, some short-term studies and some ongoing classes as well. We are currently in need of teachers who can lead short or long term women’s classes at various days and times. Contact the church office if you would like to teach or facilitate a women’s class. • Women’s Volunteer Tea – In September, we held an appreciation / recruiting tea to bring more ladies into our ministry to women at Hope. Attendees learned about upcoming events with Hope women’s ministry as well as receiving information about ACTS, Streetlight, and various other ministries to women in our communities. We recruited lots of ladies to help with the needs of Hope women’s ministries. • Fundraisers – A Spring parking lot sale in March raised $1000, which (along with funds from the 2014 Holiday Boutique and other fund raisers) was used to offset the cost of our women’s retreat in April. Women’s ministry also raised funds by serving meals at the Harvest party in October and the Holiday Boutique in November. Additionally, some of the profits from sales at the 2015 Hope’s Treasures Boutique are being set aside for Hope Women’s Retreat 2016 and the Covenant Women’s Triennial next summer.

WOMEN’S MINISTRY

• Spring Women’s Retreat – Hope Women’s Retreat 2015 was held at Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center in Carefree, Arizona. Forty-six ladies attended a packed house as we journeyed on a “Spiritual Trek: Reaching New Heights.” This retreat was followed by a “Mending the Soul” group that met throughout the summer. Our 2016 retreat is scheduled for the weekend of April 8 - 10, 2016, once again meeting at Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center in Carefree, Arizona. Funds are being set aside to help bring the cost of the retreat within the reach of Hope’s ladies who wish to attend. This year’s theme is “Spiritual DNA: Discovering Our Unique Identity in Christ.”

Many individuals worked to make women’s ministry happen in 2015. Hope Women’s Ministry is truly a matter of women supporting, equipping, and loving other women, using whatever gifts they have received to serve others. Thanks to all the ladies who helped in any way.

On this journey of Hope with you,

OUTREACH Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” - Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV)

Hope Covenant Church is a family on mission. We have been given a mission in this world, a job that starts the moment we follow Christ and ends the day we die. That mission is simple - it is to make disciples by obeying the Great Commandments (Matthew 22:36-40) and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20).

One

of the ways we accomplish this disciple-making, kingdom-advancing, Godward mission is

through our outreach ministries. Over the past year we have begun to think about developing longterm sustainable partnerships for our Outreach Ministry. We are now building houses with 1Mission in Mexico once a year, supporting and working with three missionary families, and partnering with a poor Title 1 school - San Marcos Elementary - in our local community for the entire school year. Through these partnerships we are investing in the lives of many people and now starting to see real and genuine fruit. The love of GOD and the message of the gospel are getting out into our community through Hope! Praise God!

OUTREACH

HUMAN TRAFFICKING

In 2015, our trafficking ministry held two events to support StreetLightUSA:

3rd Annual Black & White Ball This year we teamed up with quite a few people from outside of Hope. We saw a huge increase in attendance, money raised, and visibility for this annual event. The majority of attenders were from outside our church, so it is becoming more of an outreach event for the East Valley - Joyce Vogt and Jessy’s vision from the beginning!

Christmas Dinner for StreetLightUSA Residents Though put together last minute and during the busiest days of the year, we saw an amazing support for this event from our church family. We had volunteers from Hope who signed up to bring various dishes that were delivered to the girls at StreetLightUSA on Christmas Day. We even had money donated from ministries in church that we used to buy each girl a pair of crazy slippers. The girls loved the food and slippers! We sincerely extend our appreciation to the volunteers of “Serving the Homeless on Christmas Day” (headed by Karen Tonkinson) for helping us put together and heat up our meals for the girls. There was an interest voiced in making this an annual event for Hope.

OUTREACH

NAVAJO MINISTRY

Debbie and I are especially grateful for the caring and committed team God has given us to support Hope’s Navajo Ministry. We are equally grateful for the generous support from our church family who are our prayer warriors and suppliers of food, money for scholarships and gas, clothing, shoes, washing machines and dryers, TVs, DVD Players…and much more. Hope has supported 35 mission trips to the Navajo people since 2005, and four trips in 2015. We focused our resources in two areas this year: Native American Outreach Ministry (NAOMI) House, a foster home for Native American Children in Joseph City, AZ; and Pastor Jerry and Phyllis Keams’ Annual Native American Pastors’ Training Conference in Holbrook, AZ.

A. NAOMI House

1. June 5-7, 2015. We interacted with the following key staff persons: Robert (chef, grounds keeper, and handyman), Jason and Charlotte (house parents), and briefly with Genevieve Skidmore (Executive Director). Our team from Hope included 27 persons: Debbie Selland, Trip Leader; Brandon & Shannon Brown; Stacey Kovach & two sons, Tristan & Eian; Lyle & Liz Speciale; Randy & Annette Lane; Mona, Becky & Krystofer Childress; Karen Pfautz & her two grandchildren (Jake & Macy); Sheri Cross & her four grandchildren (Jadin, Tristan, Makenna, and Tyler); Alex & Lauren Randel and Karen, Ryan & Megan Tonkinson, and Verda Reeves, former member of Hope who is now living in Payson. Again, our church family generously supported this trip. You provided most of the food for the entire conference, three scholarships for team members, a brand new washing machine, a slightly used washer & dryer, and Marge Boydston’s famous brownies! Major Accomplishments: We made it in one piece…despite the heavy rains and tarps blowing in the wind! We prepared & served six meals for the children, staff, and our team of 27…thanks to Karen Pfautz, Karen Tonkinson, Shannon Brown and all of their assistants. Lyle and Randy installed two washing machines and a dryer. Sheri led a “story time” on blankets--with excellent interaction between the children and our team, assisted by Liz, Lauren, Mona and Becky. Alex, Brandon and others led a group of our teens in removing weeds from the children’s playground, although this activity was hampered by lots of rain and MUD. Verda, Stacey, Mona, Becky and others provided art activities in the afternoon. The children very much enjoyed painting birdhouses and other wooden items. The older Navajo teens enjoyed riddles. We should incorporate this into future activities. Mona and Becky organized the pantry and assisted in many of the other activities. Randy and Annette ran errands and were our team photographers!

OUTREACH

NAVAJO MINISTRY

2. October 23-25, 2015. Shannon Brown and Alex & Lauren Randel led this trip. The primary purpose was to further develop relationships with Naomi House children and staff. Major Accomplishments: Spent an afternoon getting to know the children individually over card games, bracelet making and building puzzles; served the staff by providing dinner and giving them a break; pulled weeds, changed lightbulbs, cleaned and helped organize the Naomi House main building; organized a Vacation Bible School day where we taught about Creation, read the Bible and prayed with the children; we did painting and crafts projects with the children, and attended church with Naomi House staff in Winslow.

3. December 20, 2015. This was a “whistle stop” visit as Alex & Lauren Randel delivered handwritten Christmas Cards with a $25.00 gift card to WalMart in Winslow. Because of the generosity of several team members we were able to include all of the staff at both facilities, Joseph City and the Ranch, plus all the children…for a total of 34 $25 gift cards. We also provided gift bags filled with citrus and chocolates for the staff.

B. Annual Native American Pastor Training Conference 1. September 2-5, 2015. This annual conference is held at the Holbrook Pentecostal Christian Church, Holbrook, AZ. Pastor Jerry Keams and his wife, Phyllis, were solely responsible for organizing this year’s conference. It was the best attended conference held to date with approximately 120 persons in attendance. Pastor Jerry and Phyllis raise all the money to provide lodging at local motels for those attendees needing financial support. This year there were pastors and their families/friends from numerous tribes, including: Navajo, Hope, Pima, Sioux, Apache, Lakota and many more. They came from Oklahoma, the Dakotas, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Mississippi and Alaska. The primary purpose of this conference is to equip native pastors so they can be more fruitful in advancing the gospel across our Native American reservations…and far beyond.

Our team included Vernia Frazier, Pamela Lednicky, Sarah Keough, Will DeVaughn, and Jim and Debbie Selland. Hope Covenant Church

OUTREACH

NAVAJO MINISTRY

Major Accomplishments: Hope provided most of the food for this conference—eight meals over the course of four days…for as many as 120 people for some meals. We learned that Vernia is the “Queen of Meatloaf!” The entrée for one of the evening meals was meatloaf, but one of the volunteer ladies from Jerry’s church was not able to prepare it, so Vernia jumped in and improvised…delivering four large trays FULL of delicious meat loaf! This is typical of what we encounter on our mission trips. We plan for certain activities and then plans often change…and sometimes drastically. Through it all, God continues to teach us to RELY on Him and to faithfully love and serve His people!

We brought with us a like-new electric kitchen stove and refrigerator. And, both were pressed into service the moment we arrived. The stove in Pastor Keams’ home had just quit working and the refrigerator at the church was not cooling properly. Hmmmm. God is always at work.

Also, we were asked to provide a children’s program for the three evening worship services, which we did. The children ranged in age from 1 through high school ages. We had about 20 to 25 children each evening. So our valiant crew cooked, washed dishes and mopped floors during the day and ministered to the children in the evenings. We learned one major lesson: do NOT use glitter glue to make name tags! It takes forever to dry and makes a gigantic mess.

It was not all work. Sarah had a birthday during our trip, so we helped her celebrate with a side trip through the Painted Desert National Park. That was a lot of fun.

This ministry could not be sustained without your support. A huge Thank You to everyone who has ever helped with one of our Navajo ministry trips…dating back to 2005. And to those who are our “senders,” prayer warriors, and staunch supporters, a BIG THANK YOU to each and every one of you!

For those of you who have never gone on a Hope “Mission Trip,” this could be a good way for you to “test the waters.” You may experience new spiritual growth, as well as identify specific areas for serving within our Hope family. Stay tuned for future trip announcements. And, please keep praying for the entire Navajo Nation and our dedicated Native American Pastors who are helping build HIS Kingdom all across the USA.

SAN MARCOS ELEMENTARY Hope Covenant Church’s partnership with San Marcos began in September 2014. San Marcos Elementary is a Title I school. Title I is the largest federal aid program for public schools. This program provides additional funds for educating disadvantaged children. These funds are designated to assist children in meeting challenging academic standards. Title I is the federal government’s commitment to closing the achievement gap between lowincome and moderate to high income students. With over 600 students at San Marcos Elementary, more than 90% of them qualify for the free lunch program. That is one of the highest percentages in the State of Arizona. The parent involvement in the school has declined in recent years due to the economy because it is necessary for both parents to work. Some of our volunteers who also volunteer at the food bank see San Marcos families there as well. This is a community where there is a lot need, located just 3.4 miles from Hope Covenant Church.

We began our partnership by meeting with the principal, Dr. Becky Henderson, to assess particular needs where we could be of most help. She determined that there were three major areas where we could be of most help: student - Matthew 22:39 support, teacher support and staff support. Kelly Wight and Paula Edmonds are the representatives from Hope Covenant Church who are leading the ministry. In the first year, Hope volunteers have spent over 375 hours working for San Marcos! The ministry has been funded mostly through donations from Hope members and attendees as well as donations from the outside community. So far, one luncheon and Starbucks gift cards sent to the teachers at Christmas were funded through the church budget.

‘‘ ... Love your neighbor as yourself.” ‘‘

It is our overall goal to be the hands and feet of Jesus at San Marcos Elementary, with our actions serving as tangible examples of His love.
