The Diocese of Orange, through OC Catholic newspaper, presents local, national and world news about the Catholic Church. Our intention is to give our readers access to a variety of perspectives in order to help them to process the information within the framework of our Catholic faith, but also to better understand the perspectives of those with opposing viewpoints. We hope that ultimately our readers will be better equipped to have con structive conversations that further the growth of the Catholic Church.

ROM THE PROCLAMATION OF the Gospel at the beginning of the liturgy, we know that today is different, not only because we hear two Gospel passages, or because we hold palms and move in procession. Today begins Holy Week, a time set apart, a week in which to listen, pray, reflect, and take to heart the truth of Christ’s passion, crucifixion, death, and ultimate ly, resurrection. It takes a week, and a lifetime, to truly hear the message of Christ’s love. It is difficult for us to comprehend that Jesus willingly sacrificed himself, so we must hear the story again and again. Let this week be for us a new moment of faith in which we, together with the criminal who was crucified with Christ, cry out, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

Easter Week is an opportunity not only to remember the events from Palm Sunday, Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem to the gift of his very self at the last supper, his passion, and finally his resurrection. For those who participate in the Triduum it can be a time of profound spiritualAccordingenrichment.totheUS Catholic Con ference of Bishops, “The summit of the Liturgical Year is the Easter Triduum— from the evening of Holy Thursday to the evening of Easter Sunday. Though chronologically three days, they are litur gically one day unfolding for us the unity of Christ’s Paschal Mystery.”

The first celebration is the Chrism Mass, either celebrated Holy Thursday morning or as is done in the Diocese of Orange, on the Monday of Holy Week. All of the Diocese priests attend to renew their priestly commitment. In addition, the bishop blesses the holy oils that will be used throughout the year – The Oil of the Sick, the Oil of the Catechumens, and the Holy AccordingChrism.toMsgr. John Urell, pastor of St. Timothy Parish in Laguna Niguel, “The evening Mass of the Last Supper on Holy Thursday marks the end of Lent when Catholics spend 40 days preparing themselves for the most important time of the liturgical year. Catholics memorial ize Christ’s passion, death, and resurrec tion, which the Triduum is all about.”

VERY YEAR THE CATHOLIC revisits the most significant week in human history – where divine love and divine power came face to face with human frailty and weakness. The result is salvation.

Be patient though, it is also a hectic time for the clergy and staff at the parish. Msgr. Urell quipped – “People often ask me what I’m going to do after all the Easter festivities are over. I tell them that I’m going to crawl back home and take a long nap!” Until he rises again. C

Still, the solemnity of Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the days leading up to the glory of Easter provide important lessons for Catholic families. Catholic schoolchildren have an advantage, of course, because they learn about Holy Week and Lent in their classrooms. But parents can use a number of books, lesson plans and other resources – many of them available online for little to no cost – to help children of all ages understand Holy Week.Ithelps if parents and their children began Lent with confessions and participation in Ash Wednesday ceremonies, so that lessons of the 40-day period have a clear beginning.

Attending these offers opportu nities for parents to teach children about Lent and Holy Week, and also the chance to model prayerful wor ship in church. I remember many Lenten services when I challengedwasto keep my three children attentive and quiet.

There are other ways parents can make the lessons of Holy Week come alive. Family prayers can focus on readings from the Gospel about Jesus’s passion.
