East-Enders Eighth Annual Reunion in the books excerpts from Bill Moore, Organizer

Although the ‘East-Enders’ eighth annual reunion has just happened, mark it in your calendars for next year: July 15, 2017 at Falaise (10 a.m to about 4:30). Walk into the past, a bit.

Preparing for the group photo. It has been said that getting the East-Enders together is like herding cats.

Photos by John Chepil and Tom Gooden

What started out in 2009 as a Collingwood Park reunion has become a WindermereSecondary-School catchment-area reunion. The first video had the “East-Enders” in the title, so the name stayed. In 2009, before the first reunion, I went to Classmates.com to get the word out. So, I had to advertise it as a Windermere Secondary School reunion, although it was originally intended to be a Collingwood Park reunion. So didn’t want it limited to Windermere, but to include people who lived in the area and went to other schools, like Notre Dame and Vancouver College, Van Tech and Killarney, and people who partied with us in the years after high school but came from other places.

The jam session

More recently, there are Facebook friends in our age group, the baby-boomers, who grew up in other parts of East Van. So basically, the people invited to our reunion are former Windermere students and friends and family.

Here is the group photo from 2015. A good looking bunch. Check out the excellent East-Enders Reunion videos on Youtube to see who you know. Will you be in the 2017 photo? Photo from Youtube.

If you are coming to the reunion and expect to see a lot of people who went to high schools other than Windermere, don’t expect to see many, although there might be some. What you will find are people who knew the

In 2012, we moved the reunion from Collingwood Park to Falaise Hall and Park because it rained in 2011, and we needed a park with shelter. It proved to be a good move, since, it seems, half the people (or more) who went to Windermere came from the Project, which is what we all called Renfrew Heights, which is where Falaise Hall is. To get the funds for the hall rental started, eight members of this group paid $25 a table, for a party of eight, to go to the 2012 event; any more that year would have to be outside. Thank you to all who participated in that, because all the reunions since then stem from that seed-money. There is a jam session that starts as soon as anyone wants to play; come solo, or bring a group. Bass players use my amp and guitar. Thank you to the musicians for their participation, every year—especially those who have let us use their sound-system (in past years, Steve Webb and Robert Brown). Thank you to Darryl Michaud for making videos of the jam session, for years. I would like to thank all the volunteers who help set up and put things away, sell raffle tickets, tend the sign-in desk, clean up, obtain donated-merchandise from businesses, and more. There are too many to mention; I’ll probably forget someone, lol.

We started a tradition of having a Group Photo in the Pool, at 1 pm. Thank you to Darryl Michaud and Pat Bourget for all their work taking pictures and compiling them into video-montages. Come by the hall, wherever we have the sign-in table, at least once, to sign the guest register. Circulate. Remember, you might not recognize people right away. Be nice if everyone put on a name-tag, but, for some reason, some people rebel against that. Last year, I bought masking tape to use for name tags. It might sound kind of bush league, but it worked and the tape doesn’t fall off like many name tags do. If you feel that nobody will remember you, you’re not alone. You’d be surprised how many people know who you are, from a park or classroom, or knew people you knew. Even if you weren’t well known, you were seen, daily. If you don’t know or recognize anyone, just start up a conversation and get in on the vibe. Families were big, back in the day, with siblings everywhere. Think of it as six degrees of separation from the olden days. Catch up.

In the meantime, I’ll try to pass off the baton (of having annualreunions) to someone else, or evenbetter, a group of former East-Enders who would like to see the annualreunions continue. Everyone says how ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS! great they are, on ICBC / WCB / MSP / PRIVATE Facebook, so, I Services Available think it’s possible Manual Therapy, I.M.S., Acupuncture, Laser, Sports Therapy that someone else will take up the torch. Sculpture by local artist honours lost streams celebrates nature

Still Moon Arts events

by Lucas Chan

On June 30 Still Moon Art Society’s artistic director, Carmen Rosen, unveiled her first public art sculpture Still Here. Located on 2699 Kingsway (close to the old Wally’s Burgers), Still Here is a testament to the lost streams that continue to exist beneath the concrete jungle. The sculpture also represents the efforts of the community to acknowledge its existence and steward the future health of existing natural spaces that remain in the city, like Renfrew Ravine and Still Creek. More than just beautiful places teeming with wildlife and flora, these places present environments for communities to learn, explore and connect with each other as well as the natural world. Come out to Stewardship Mondays On July 11 the weekly summer initiative, Stewardship Mondays, had its first session and featured a workshop on weaving native and nonnative plant species with local artist Sharon Kallis. Every Monday for the rest of the summer Still Moon Arts will continue to host family friendly activities in the ravine from 11 am–1 pm, meeting at the Renfrew Ravine labyrinth on 27th Avenue.

Still Here art opening. Photos by Ben Rosen Purcell Performance Exploration Renfrew Ravine is the home to many memories about how this natural space has served as a place for community reflection, inspiration and connection. From July 10–

14 Still Moon Arts organized a site-specific Performance Exploration workshop in Renfrew Ravine, a four-day process to tell communityinspired stories through dance, poetry, music, vocal body, theatre and ephemeral art.

Help save our neighbourhood schools! Illustrated stories show On June 29, 2016, the Bruce Parent Action Group 2016 (BPAG) was formed in response to the announcement that Graham Bruce Elementary School will be one of three schools being put on the potential list of schools to be considered for closure. During the 2015/2016 school year, Bruce housed 218 students, which was at 70% capacity. The school has the potential to house more students. As you are aware, in addition to Bruce elementary, Carleton elementary school is also on the list to be considered for closure, as is Gladstone high school. The Joyce-Collingwood area of East Vancouver is expanding rapidly. The Wall Centre Central Park will soon add more than 1,000 new homes. The Westbank Projects’ 29-storey condo tower and the JoyceCollingwood Station Precinct plan will add another 2,600 new homes. The new zoning is specifically aimed at providing affordable housing for families in the Collingwood neighbourhood. With the potential of approximately 3,600 new families coming into the area, there will be more families who

will need schools for their children. It just doesn’t make sense to close these schools! We need your help! [subhead] The Bruce Parent Action Group was at the recent Greek Festival, thanks to our local member of Parliament, Don Davies and to the president of the Greek Orthodox Community, Mr. Kostas Nikolaou who allowed us to set up a table at their festivities. Over 1,000 petitions were well received by the public to help us advocate for our community schools. More can be done! Please join the campaign to advocate for Bruce school by visiting https:// bruceelementary.wordpress.com to print and sign the petition or to see updates on this worthwhile cause. Join the Facebook at https://www. facebook.com/savebruce/. Please mail or drop off your signed petition to MLA Adrian Dix’s constituency office at 5022 Joyce Street, Vancouver, BC V5R 4G6. BPAG appreciates your help for this worthwhile cause for the future of our children. Please sign the petition and send it in. Our children are our future.

connection between cultures, relationships and physical activity by Vinoth Palanivel

Renfrew Collingwood INTERactive has created eight illustrated stories that will be released this summer. The videos encourage you to think about how you can be physically active while meeting a new person each week. One of the project’s mottos is “Try something new, with someone not like you!” These illustrations share stories of what a neighbourhood can accomplish when they work together around a common interest, which in this case, is to increase intercultural understanding and relationships, using physical activity as the tool. Social relations and physical activity are well known to increase personal and community health and safety—the ultimate vision of the INTERactive project. The stories describe how the collective action of the project came together, and the changes and challenges participants experienced over the first year of work together. Through this process participants engaged eight local neighbourhood partners plus the University of British Columbia, supported nine intercultural connectors who engaged over 460 people. Many more people were reached through numerous social and physical activities within the neighbourhood. The releases are approximately three minutes in length. The first story was released on June 25, with the rest being released once per week on Wednesdays from July 2 to August 13. The last video, to be released August 20, is a 24-minute compilation of all eight stories. The Seniors Connection Connections make all the difference

by Suzanne Liddle

The following is a paid advertisement by Adrian Dix, MLA for Vancouver/Kingsway Dear Neighbours,

Saving Carleton, Gladstone, and Bruce – Get Involved!

Most of us are aware that we have an ageing population in B.C. and the rest of Canada. It is estimated that seniors will make up 21 percent of the Vancouver population by 2031 and did you know that the Renfrew-Collingwood area has the highest number of seniors in Vancouver?

On June 20th, the Vancouver School Board announced a list of schools to be considered for possible closure. This list includes Sir Guy Carleton and Graham Bruce Elementary Schools in Joyce-Collingwood and is a direct result of pressure from the BC Liberal government.

The seniors population Seniors on a recent trip to Reifel Bird Sanctuary. here contributes so much to our neighbourhood by volunteering, caregiving, If you see someone new in your Of course, not all seniors who child-minding, working and building or your street, make an live alone are isolated and not participating in community life. effort to get to know them. all seniors that live with their Not a people person? The possible closure of Bruce and Carleton schools is a blow to our community. These are both excellent, viable, dynamic public schools that are part of the area and Vancouver’s history. It is impossible to imagine our neighbourhood without them. Last year, they were home to more than 500 public school students. Indeed, Carleton has been the centre of public education in the area since 1896 more than three decades before South Vancouver joined the City of Vancouver.

We are going to fight to save Graham Bruce and Carleton as we did in 2010. In addition, I will be working all out to support Gladstone Secondary in the Cedar Cottage area which is also on the list of possible closures.

They will also continue the series of talks by Empower Health Clinic on the natural prevention and treatment of diabetes, featuring Dr. Raymond Trott on August 15. For information on these workshops and more check out the monthly bulletin for seniors available from CNH reception.

On June 28th, Vancouver City Council approved the Joyce-Collingwood Station Precinct Plan which proposes an increase of 2600 homes in the immediate area of the Skytrain station. The plan includes zoning for several towers, mid-rise apartments, 4-6 story apartment buildings, townhouses and duplexes. In addition, the Wall Centre Central Park is currently under construction on Boundary Road and Vanness adding 1014 homes to local community and many new school-age children. This school announcement took place as thousands of new homes were approved in our community by City Council and is simply wrong. The new homes will dramatically increase our area population and the number of school-age children. Closing our local schools makes no sense as a result. No community has been as open and welcoming to new Canadians and density as Joyce-Collingwood. That is why the proposed closure of Carleton and Graham Bruce is so unacceptable. Schools are our key public services and public spaces. They are needed now and will be needed for generations to come. Our office has been busy attending meetings with students, alumni and parents from across JoyceCollingwood who are rallying to protect their schools. Get involved! Volunteer to support our schools by contacting us at 604-660-0314 or Adrian.dix.mla@leg.bc.ca. The summer Olympics are every four years. The last summer Olympics were in London, England, in 2012. This year they will be in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from August 5 to21.

Brazil is in South America. This is the first time ever that a country in South America is hosting the Olympics. Brazil is the biggest country in South America. It also has the most people.

There are almost 200 athletes from Canada going to the Rio Olympics. They have worked very hard to get to go. Some of the sports that they will do are swimming, soccer, cycling (riding a bike), rowing (a boat) and gymnastics.

Did you live in Vancouver in February 2010? If you did, you will remember the winter Olympics were hosted here. It was a very exciting time in the city. There were people from all over the world. There were many things to see and do.

I am sure that Rio must be very excited to host the Olympics. Good luck, Rio! Good luck Team Canada!

Zika Virus in Brazil  Have you heard of the Zika virus? It is a sickness passed by mosquitoes. If a pregnant woman gets Zika, her child is at risk for being born with a very small head or other problems. The Zika virus has spread all over the world, but some countries are having more trouble stopping it than others. Brazil has had a problem with Zika. The World Health Organization said that pregnant women should not travel to Brazil for the Olympics. This has made the Olympic athletes worried. Some of them have pregnant wives, others might want to have children soon. There are some athletes who have decided not to go to the Olympics in Rio. They do not want to risk getting the Zika virus. The health authorities (people in charge) in Brazil say that the athletes should not worry about Zika. The chance of getting it is very low. There are not as many mosquitoes during the Olympics in August, which is winter in Brazil. Still, some athletes do not want to risk their health. Others are not as worried. They have worked so hard to get to the Olympics that nothing will stop them from going. What do you think? If you were an Olympic athlete, would you go to Rio?

Jazzercise jazzes up exercise with music, dance, and fun by Norman Hill Is there a way to get fit, have fun, and be social? Yes, there is—it’s called Jazzercise. Jazzercise classes provide a total body workout that blends dance-based cardio exercises with strength training and muscle toning. The classes are accompanied by high energy dance music.

Cheryl recommends that people find a type of physical exercise that they actually enjoy, so that it will naturally become part of their routine. Many people find Jazzercise’s high energy dance classes a lot more fun than more common types of exercise, such as jogging or weight training. For anyone who likes to move and listen to music, Jazzercise could be a perfect way to get fit. Jazzercise offers participants many benefits. First of all, because Jazzercise classes exercise the whole body and are so intense, participants get a balanced exercise program and usually see results quickly. Cheryl said Jazzercise seems to also help keep people young.

Collingwood Neighbourhood House invites you to lunch every Tuesday and Thursday. Full meal prices are $6.25 for adults, $5 for seniors, $4 for students and $3.25 for children under 12. Items can be purchased a la carte or “to go.”

August lunch menu Tuesday, August 2 Mushroom barley soup Tuna sandwiches / veggie option Salad; Butter tart

Jazzercise classes at CNH are taught by instructor Cheryl Hallman, who has been teaching Jazzercise for 35 years, including more than 18 years at CNH. When Jazzercise classes began years ago at CNH, there were only a few participants, many of them CNH staff. Over the years, thanks to Cheryl, the number of participants has grown significantly. The thing Cheryl enjoys most about teaching Jazzercise is meeting the students. She estimates she has taught over 10,000 of them!

COMMUNITY LUNCH

Thursday, August 4 Kung Pao chicken / eggplant and tofu curry with jasmine rice Salad; Peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream

Since the routines and music are constantly updated by Jazzercise, the classes are always fresh and exciting. Jazzercise offers participants a chance to get away from the stress and worries of their daily lives. Instructor Cheryl said, “Jazzercise classes are one hour to get away from it all.” Another important benefit of Jazzercise classes is that the exercises are very safe. All the routines are professionally choreographed by Jazzercise, a company that started the fitness revolution over 40 years ago. Using a follow-the-leader style, the instructor gives participants the option of doing exercises using no impact, low impact and high impact techniques. Jazzercise offers more than physical benefits. It’s also about the friendships people make in class. The classes appeal to all ages and fitness levels. People don’t need to be good dancers or wellcoordinated—anyone can do Jazzercise!

The classes are very popular with women, but men are welcome too. The elderly benefit from the classes as well, since the exercises are great for building bone density. CNH offers Jazzercise classes at the following times: Mondays and Wednesdays, 6:00 – 7:00 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:00 – 1:00 pm Saturdays, 10:00 – 11:00 am It costs $5.50 to drop in to a class. Another option is to buy a recreation activity pass at a cost of $55 for 12 sessions, which allows participants to save $11. The pass can also be used for other CNH recreation programs, such as yoga, Zumba, volleyball, badminton, or soccer. For more information on Jazzercise or CNH’s other recreation programs, visit http://www.cnh. bc.ca/programs/adults-activities/ or call 604-435-0323. To buy a recreation pass or to drop in to a class, visit CNH’s front desk.

Youth explore home, place and nature in Skytrain mural

This summer, a new community mural has been installed at the construction site of the Joyce-Collingwood Skytrain Station. This mural was lead by artists aly de la cruz yip and Kim Villagante and created by youth in the neighbourhood. The mural creation took place at CNH during the Saturday Fun Group program, a drop-in leadership program for newcomer youth. The concept of home, place and the natural environment (including the ecological and social history of this land) were recurring themes throughout the project. Youth participants were involved in every step, from sketching, design and painting.

The mural is a symbol of the community that stands behind it. Each image represents a story from a participant and these stories collectively represent our neighbourhood of Renfrew-Collingwood. The mural provides a visual public platform for youth-based artistic expression. The arts is a powerful tool to connect and build relationships—and these relationships are part of our sense of belonging and our home in our neighbourhood. The mural will be at the Joyce-Collingwood station till December 2017 until construction is complete. The project was supported by Collingwood Neighbourhood House (CNH), Collingwood Community Policing Centre and Translink.
