Collingwood Days 2020

by Andrea Berneckas In this year of seismic changes, it’s nice to have some sense of continuity and familiarity – maybe even a bit of fun.

Keeping that in mind, Collingwood Days festival is rescheduled to take place during the month of August, both online and in-community.

The theme of this year’s festival is Sustainability and Our Connection to Nature, and never has it been so important for us to renew our relationship with our environment.

The therapeutic benefits of spending time in nature cannot be underestimated – from walking through our parks and greenways, to growing vegetables and listening to birdsong. While we are adjusting to a new reality, we are also adjusting to living at a slower pace, enjoying summer in Vancouver and, perhaps, learning to appreciate what is right before us.

This year’s festival will be comprised of quieter, smaller events around the neighbourhood.

The British Columbia Regiment Association Band is a group of volunteer civilians who play for military and public events. But since the pandemic, all events have been cancelled and its usual rehearsal place, Beatty Street Drill Hall, closed down. The drill hall (across Stadium station, with the green tank outside) is open to members only. The band now practises under the covered area by Slocan Fieldhouse every Monday, from 5:30 to 7 pm. The band director Brian Smith invites others to join them. He said to just bring an instrument, music stand and chair. Otherwise, the public is welcome to Slocan Park to enjoy the music. That’s why sagre are more numerous during summer, when people can also gather and celebrate with socializing, music and dancing.

First workshop in youth storytelling project Tapestry of Place

by Deanna Cheng Still Moon Arts Society hosted an online introductory workshop on podcasting on June 17, the first in a series of workshops this summer, for a new project called Tapestry of Place.

The project is focused on youth who have an interest in exploring how each person came to be here and how our stories weave together. The workshop itself focused on idea creation and one’s approach to podcasting instead of technical aspects such as script writing or sound editing.

Podcasting has been growing over the last three years, according to a 2019 report by The Canadian Podcast Listener. And British Columbia has the highest concentration of monthly podcast listeners at 35%, followed by Ontario and Alberta.

Skulski said multiple factors contribute to the rising popularity of podcasts.

For one, podcasts are easy to transport and carry around. “They are often easy to digest and share,” said Skulski. “And most podcast directories are known.”

Podcasts also allow others to multitask. Skulski said they sometimes listen to podcasts while walking the cat.

As a big lover of mushrooms and nature, Skulski is a co-host on Future Ecologies, a podcast about the many ways one relates to our living planet.

One workshop participant said a friend asked her to join a project telling cooking stories and sharing recipes, ones often passed down by mothers.

She said they considered podcasting because it’s less invasive than a video camera.

Then they want to pair each piece with a recipe.

The participant asked how to make it sound like you’re walking or cooking.

“Interview the person while the person does that thing,” suggested Skulski. “Get clean audio of steps or water bubbling to layer in the podcast.”

The brain will make the connection, they said.

Skulski also said, record 10 seconds of “room tone” for editing. This means leaving the recorder on in a room

Another participant asked what the average length of a podcast is.

Skulski said the ideal length is 20 minutes due to attention span.

The ones Skulski listens to are often an hour long but advises against that. “Doing one hour is not for beginners. Go for three minutes and see how it goes.

Then try 10 minutes.”

The Tapestry of Place project will have more upcoming workshops like this one and they will include spending time out in nature, learning how to make things with local materials and hearing stories told by local Indigenous Knowledge Keepers.

The project’s original timeline is to build these storytelling and podcasting skills over the summer and create the podcasts themselves this fall, said Still Moon’s artistic director Carmen Rosen.

However, these deadlines may change as the COVID-19 pandemic plays out. Safety is a priority, she said.

Retirement income — Do you have enough?

by Ann Wong Most of us have retirement as a savings goal from day one and yet somehow other things always have a knack of bumping it further down the line.

After graduating from school or immigrating to Canada, we likely put a car, vacations, wedding, babies or a condo before retirement. After all, retirement will happen much later in life.

First, take a look at your current income and expenses. What do you anticipate will be your income sources at retirement? They may comprise of Canada Pension Plan (CPP), Old Age Security (OAS), pension, pension split with spouse, savings, rental income, investment income and/or a part-time job? As a side note, the Canadian government announced a one-time $300 payment for those receiving OAS and up to an additional $200 for those receiving the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) as a form of financial relief for seniors during this pandemic crisis.

Next, consider your current expenses and future expenses. Most people plan for less income and fewer expenses.

For example, if you are not going to work, you’re likely not going to pay for parking at work. Aside from the regular fixed expenses like housing, utilities, groceries and transportation, there are also discretionary spending like travel and entertainment.

In the early years of retirement, the Golden Years, many people like to travel and that tends to take a big bite from the budget. In later years, the Twilight Years, the funds may be allocated to needs like prescription medication, therapies (physiotherapy, occupational therapy), wheelchairs, installing special equipment like chairlifts and bathroom retrofits.

Therefore, I argue that your retirement expenses would be about the same in the early years as the later years.

If you do have savings but not a pension, there are some investment solutions that can help you with cash flow so that you can set it up and have a guaranteed income for life, regardless of how the markets perform. These are structured as annuities. The purpose is to pass the risk of investing in the market to an insurance company. Every year that you do not take funds out, some contracts will also add a notional bonus percentage. You can simply think of it as extra bonus on top of your investment funds.

If you have a permanent life insurance plan, like a Whole Life or Universal Life policy, they likely have some cash value that some individuals have tapped into for their retire-

ment. There are specific strategies to use this option. You will want to be mindful of the amount of cash value, your tax rate and the duration that you will need funds.

There are some seniors who have found that they have become house rich and cash poor. In an effort to supplement their retirement income, they may choose to use the equity in their home. This may be ideal for those who don’t have children or don’t intend to pass on their assets to the next generation. Since most people have worked hard to pay off their mortgage, this only serves as one of the last resorts to finance their retirement. One caveat that comes to mind is that spending these funds should be put to prudent use rather than frivolous expenditures.

If you are nearing retirement or currently in retirement, speak to your financial professional on approaches that best suit your circumstances.

In memory of Don Van Dyke

Honouring a dedicated and caring community leader

by Paula Carr The Renfrew-Collingwood community is saddened to hear about the passing of Don Van Dyke on December 21, 2019. While on vacation in Mexico with his best friend Carol, Dan had a fall that resulted in severe head trauma.

Don was a founding pioneer and active board member of the Collingwood Neighbourhood House. He also sat on the Joyce Street Area Planning Committee, was involved in the establishment of the Collingwood Community Policing Centre, the Collingwood Business Improvement Association and an active volunteer at the food bank run out of the old United Church.

Paula Carr (Past executive director of Collingwood Neighbourhood House) Don supported me tremendously as the executive director of CNH when he was a board member and long after. He always took the time to drop in, find out what was new in our development, provided encouragement and took a genuine interest in me as a person. He will always be in my heart and in the heart of the community.

Don was so dedicated to making the neighbourhood a great place to live, work and play.

He always had the interests of our most vulnerable in his heart and modelled what a caring and active citizen could accomplish when they brought their talents and interests into voluntary activity. All of these institutions and places in the Collingwood neighbourhood benefited from his gentle and strong leadership and have grown and thrived since their inception.

We moved from one location to another until we secured a permanent home for CNH. I have so many happy memories of those days. He said in his retirement he wanted to give back to the community that had supported him and his family during the years he had to work. He

He and I used to laugh and joke about how we felt like we were the parents of CNH. It was our baby ha,ha.

Chris Taulu (Past chair Joyce Area Planning Committee and founding member and executive director of Collingwood Community Policing Centre) Don was solid, worked hard at things, particularly in the beginning when times were tough. He pitched in to do what was needed not matter how big or small.

He was an amazing link within and between several citizens-led organizations as they were forming and was always looking for partners and community leaders to bring out their contributions to improve the neighbourhood. One of Don’s outstanding qualities was his honouring of diverse voices. He had his own strong opinions and was sometimes gruff and sharp; however, he always supported and honoured the outcome of democratic processes, even if he opposed them in the beginning. He led with heart and determination and will be greatly missed.

With the newly opened RISE Community Health Centre (CHC) at 3425 Crowley Drive, Collingwood Neighbourhood House (CNH) is excited to introduce the community to its expanded team.

RISE now has 17 staff members, including nurse practitioners, registered nurses, medical office assistants, community health workers, registered clinical counsellors, a social worker, clinical coordinator, and director.

Kelvin is a seasoned nurse practitioner with experience practicing rural medicine on Vancouver Island and primary care in Vancouver. He was one of the original youth-focused nurse practitioners to be hired in BC and has experience walking alongside youth on their journeys toward health and wellness.

Each staff member has a diverse personal and professional background, and between all of them, they speak 13 languages.

Kelvin Bei

Kelvin has interests in men’s health, dermatology, and traditional Chinese medicine. He is passionate about supporting holistic health and is also a registered acupuncturist and Yangstyle tai chi instructor. Outside of work, he enjoys hiking, beekeeping, cooking and eating, and making art and pottery. Kelvin speaks Mandarin and Cantonese.

Shianne Ewenin Shianne Ewenin is French and Cree from the Kawacatoose First Nation. However, Shianne has lived mostly on the unceded territories of the (Musqueam), (Squamish), and (Tsleil-Waututh) nations.

Shianne is a registered social worker and has a minor in Indigenous studies.

advocacy, and systems navigation within community and health care settings.

“I am looking forward to working in the [Renfrew-Collingwood] neighbourhood and within a team that strives to improve the wellness of the community,” said Shianne. “My passion for this work stems from seeing firsthand how families and communities face tremendous systemic and social barriers to health, wellness, and healing. As well as my belief that decolonizing spaces and fostering environments that provide culturally appropriate services can promote wellness for diverse individuals, families, and communities.”

The Collingwood BIA established a scholarship for a Windermere student with a passion to continue in business and community building. A past Jr BIA President, Emily Ma, chairs the committee. The selection committee consists past Jr. BIA alumni. Each year we present the scholarship at the Commencement Ceremony, this year we could not due to Covid 19.
