2400 Motel — Celebrating 75 years doing
business along Vancouver’s Kingsway by Bill Rheaume
The City of Vancouver Heritage Group’s 2007 study on the 2400 Motel describes its heritage value and significant features such as the white stucco bungalows closest to Kingsway, the landscaping that surrounds them and the iconic “2400” neon sign. The 2400 Motel speaks to car culture – the love affair with the automobile that swept North America during much of the 20th century. Built in 1946 when the car was king, it is simply the best example of the postwar Kingsway auto courts and testifies to the impact of the automobile on Vancouver and, more specifically, on the artery of Kingsway. The 2400 Motel is important for its historical, formal, aesthetic and cultural values, most particularly for being a prominent marker of the evolution of Kingsway following the Second World War. Its original name of 2400 Motor Court signaled the growing sophistication of accommodations. Auto camps were giving way to auto courts, which offered a common open space or “court” fronting furnished bungalows with kitchenettes. A large neon sign greeted travellers as they crested the hill to 2400 and viewed Vancouver in the distance. 2400 Motel - Continued from page 1 Pacific Highway, which linked Vancouver via the Pattullo Bridge and the King George Highway to the American highway system south to Mexico. The motel is a local remnant of the continent-wide infrastructure serving the North American romance for the road trip, providing guests with a familiar suburban home away from home. The 2400 Motel’s geographical prominence at the point along Kingsway where a broad view of Vancouver is first seen, the motel’s very longevity and its singular appearance of being from another time, make it one of the most recognized group of buildings in the city, giving the site a city-wide and even regional importance in the cultural landscape. Its neon sign, a carry-over from Vancouver’s days as one of the greatest centres of neon signage in the world, cements the iconic stature of the site. Eve Lazarus writes, “I fell in love with the 2400 Motel on Kingsway 20 years ago when I was writing Frommer’s With Kids Vancouver. Loved the old-fashioned, retro feel of the place and its huge red-andblue neon sign. The freshly painted green-and-white bungalows had the feel of a country cabin. Kids could play on the lawn outside, the rooms were clean and functional and staying there was inexpensive.” Good things happen at the 2400. The motel has been the backdrop for movies and television shows includ-
ing X-files, Bates Motel, Motive, SuperNatural and a Bryan Adams music video. In 1966, the Grateful Dead played at Jerry Kruz’s dancehall, The Afterthought, for $500. Jerry’s dad knew the owners of the 2400, so the 17-year-old Kruz put Jerry Garcia and the band up at the 2400. The 2400 continues to offer reasonable accommodation for travellers, and over the years, it has also become a sanctuary for people in distress. In 2006, it provided emergency housing for families and individuals who were forced out of their apartment building after a leaking roof. In 2016, it became a haven for more than a dozen Syrian refugees and their families and, at the outbreak of the pandemic, it housed people needing to isolate after being exposed to COVID-19. The 2400 Motel is a rare place of shared memories. Not only did the 2400 function as a home-away fromhome for many travellers, with loyal visitors repeatedly returning to stay over many decades, but it has entered Vancouverites’ collective imagination as a seemingly immutable part of the city – a whole, miniature world from an earlier simpler time. Alcohol in parks pilot comes to Collingwood Park To meet public demand, the Vancouver Park Board developed a pilot program to allow the responsible consumption of alcohol in designated drinking sites within 22 Vancouver parks. The pilot was created to: • Provide more outdoor spaces for social connectivity – in particular, residents who have no access to a private yard and rely on parks for socializing with friends and family • Respond to current resident needs in the wake of COVID-19, recognizing that the pandemic will continue to affect people’s ability to relax and connect with others for some time • Test and monitor potential impacts of consumption of alcohol in parks

I am happy to report that my test run of the Collingwood Park drinking area went well. On Tuesday, July 20, along wth my good friend, Bob, we headed to Collingwood Park to see if the reports were true — drinking in the park was finally a go! Being as responsible of a resident as I am, I made sure that Bob and I would first seek out and consult any locally posted
signage on the matter. After locating the sign, we double checked to make sure that we would be in the designated area. Mainly, this consists of a thin strip along the north edge of the park, which is a concrete ledge, just the right height for one to sit down and enjoy a little picnic along with a couple of alcoholic beverages. We had a good time and managed not to create too much of a ruckus.

Together We Can volunteers give back to the community Clearing invasive plants near Still Creek by David Penny Speaking from personal experience as an addict, I can honestly say that, until I recovered from my addiction, there were hundreds of times that I accessed community services but only a handful of times that I gave back.
A large portion of Together We Can’s 12-step methods of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous focuses on righting past wrongs, with a focus on giving back. Through service to other addicts, alcoholics and our communities, we can become acceptable, responsible and productive members of society.
As an organization, Together We Can has been a member of this community since it opened its doors in 1993. We take pride in giving back to the community of Renfrew-Collingwood as well as to the cities of Burnaby and Vancouver. Part of Together We Can’s mission is strengthening communities, and recently, a group of volunteers from Together We Can partnered with Still Moon Arts Society’s environmental stewardship program to give back. On June 11, the group gathered at one of Still Moon’s active restoration sites, the portion of Still Creek found at Cornett Road and Natal Street. Through colonization and urbanization of what is now known as Vancouver (traditional, unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱ wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Peoples), many streams were diverted into underground pipes in order to construct infrastructure on the surface of these once wetted areas. Many of these streams were once fish-bearing and abundant with salmon. In 2004, this portion of the creek was “daylighted” (removed from its pipe and returned to the surface) and had its riparian area restored with native plants. Still Creek is one of two streams in Vancouver that has a salmon population with chum salmon returning in 2012 for the first time after an 80-year absence.

The volunteers worked with Adrian and Laura, Still Moon Arts Society’s stewards, to remove Himalayan blackberry from the riparian area that have encroached around the native plants. Himalayan blackberry has established itself across this area of Still Creek, resulting in a poor canopy cover of the stream, which in turn affects the water temperature. With less canopy cover over fish-bearing streams, temperatures for fish can be too high, which can be detrimental to their growth or can be lethal. The dense Himalayan blackberry also shades out native plants, reduces the nutrients available in the soil for native plants and impedes the seed growth or rhizomatic growth of native plants. Together We Can’s volunteers are excited to continue strengthening communities by working with Still Moon Arts Society and learning more about the delicate natural ecosystems around us and how to steward these important urban green spaces. This experience of giving back strengthens our recovery and increases our connection to the communities that have sustained us for years. Together We Can, its residents, volunteers and staff are grateful for the continuing support of you, our neighbours in the community, and are proud to keep strengthening our bond with Renfrew-Collingwood. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day hits the street via mobile info clinic by Suzanne Liddle and Anna Hofmarks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) takes place on June 15 every year. This day aims to raise awareness about abuse that is experienced by older adults in the community. This year, the Renfrew Collingwood Community Response Network took to the streets of Collingwood to talk to seniors and passers by about WEAAD! The team gave out lots of free goodies including notepads, torches, pill boxe, and pens as well as snacks. Did you know that social connections, staying active and participating in community programs can help reduce isolation that may prevent abuse from happening? If you or anyone you know would like more information you can contact the Renfrew Collingwood CRN at 604-412-3838. Now that we are in step 3 of the B.C. COVID restart plan, Collingwood Neighbourhood House is excited to reopen many in-person recreation and social programs in the

Some programs may also continue online such as Chair Yoga and Sing for Fun as, by doing so, we are able to reach more seniors who may be home bound. All programs follow public health guidelines. Staying connected, active and participating in community helps prevent isolation and abuse. We would love to see you join us for some fun and build new connections. If you

An idiom with ancient origins Hot, humid days during the summer are called “dog days.” The meaning of this idiom comes from Ancient Roman times. On the hottest days of the summer, Ancient Romans believed that the sun was extra hot because of heat from the “Dog Star.” This is a star that rises and sets with the sun in many parts of the world during the months of July and August. The idiom is now used to talk about any day when the weather is so warm, all you want to do is lie down in the shade—just like a dog.

During a heat wave, it is important to stay hydrated. It is better to sip water throughout the day than to drink a large amount at once. How much you should drink depends on your age and weight. If you usually drink 8 cups of water a day, aim to drink 12 cups in hot weather. At home, use fans, wear loose clothes and take cool showers. Keep curtains or blinds closed during the day and open the windows at night. You can also wet a bandana or towel and place it around your neck to quickly lower your temperature. It is also important to limit outdoor activities. If you need to stretch your legs, try walking around a mall or spend time in a community centre or public library. It’s been one year since Pauline Mae Cadaoas was awarded Collingwood Neighbourhood House’s (CNH) Community Vision Award. Each year, a Grade 12 student from Windermere Secondary School receives the award, which includes a $500 scholarship. It aims to support a student with a connection to CNH and/or who has volunteered in the neighbourhood, and is entering a diploma program for early childhood education, community services or community development. Pauline, now 19-years-old, was accepted into Capilano University’s Early Childhood Care and Education Program. She started her studies last fall. “I was really shocked because I wasn’t really actively looking for scholarships or anything and so one of my teachers just put my name in because she knew I was going to go into that program,” said Pauline. Now finishing her first year at Capilano, Pauline said this scholarship meant a lot to her because of her connection to the neighbourhood. She says Renfrew-Collingwood will always be a part of her and the way she grew up. Receiving the Community Vision Award felt like the community was supporting her endeavors, she said. This past year, scholarship funds helped Pauline afford art supplies for her program. One of her classes involved making felt finger puppets for when she completes her practicum. Pauline moved to Renfrew-Collingwood when she was about six years old. Since then, she has been very involved in the community. First, she attended art programs, including ballet and gymnastics. Later, she attended Collingwood Neighbourhood School [KI1] in Grade 2. For Pauline, volunteering in the neighbourhood was enjoyable because she got to see people that she knew and felt closer to the community.

Pauline has volunteered for Collingwood Days, assisted at the opening of the CNH Annex, facilitated with Windermere’s Fastbreak program and a peer-educator program. Aside from volunteering with CNH, Pauline has also volunteered with other organizations in the neighbourhood. The Community Vision Award is announced annually at CNH’s Annual General Meeting. This year’s recipient will be announced on Sept. 22.
