Summer cycle to New Brighton Pool by Julie Cheng A bike ride to and swim at New Brighton Pool is one of the great joys of summer. I love the view of the working waterfront with its grain elevators – it’s so uniquely East Vancouver. There are lanes to swim laps and a huge shallow end that’s perfect for kids. Best of all, I top off the day’s exercise with a delicious salmon burger from the concession stand. As an incentive to work extra hard, I sometimes pick up a treat from the Italian bakery at Hastings and Kaslo on the ride back. Depending on where you start in Renfrew-Collingwood, the bike ride can take from 30 to 40 minutes. There’s one big hill and a few small ones, but generally the ride follows bike routes and is quite easy and safe. For a small fee, you can purchase tickets online to reserve for one of several time slots at the pool (https://vancouver.ca/parks-recreation-culture/new-brighton-pool. aspx). I like to reserve for the 9:45 am to 12 noon time and go early to avoid the crowds.

Collingwood Corner:
Summer fun in 1969
by Loretta Houben
Summer fun in the Collingwood area in 1969. From left to right: Loretta, Leona, Marlene (sisters) with a neighbour friend in the background. Photo courtesy of Susan Williams This photo shows my parent’s back yard at 3382 Monmouth Avenue in Vancouver, B.C. My dad built the garage. No garage was provided when my parents purchased the house in 1963 for $14,500. He got the wood for free from the city dump on Kerr Street (now Everett Crowley Park). He built the wooden fence around the property, too, and planted a lawn from grass seed, leveling the bumpy dirt first. No lush turf lawn was provided with the brand-new house. Notice my mom’s large vegetable garden near the lane. Notice our swing set that we often played on. Notice we have the sprinkler going full blast in the middle of the day (now banned in Vancouver). Notice, too, the TV trays behind the swing set where we “baked” our doll’s mud pies. We also camped with our dolls in that area. They ate grass salads, too.
Notice the swing on the side of the garage that my dad also made. I’d swing on it then leap off, seeing how far I could land. The next year my dad made us a sand box in front of the garage, and we played in it for hours. The lane wasn’t paved until the 1980s, so each year a city truck came and put a coating of oil on the gravel, so it wasn’t so dusty. Oh, the memories. Do you have memories growing up in the Collingwood area? Memories from the 1970s to the 2000s? I’d love to hear from you. I’m currently working on an historical book of Collingwood, and it would be wonderful to include your memories. If you’d like to submit a story of 300 words or less, please email me at rccseniorsconnection@gmail.com. Photos are welcome too, with a short description. Deadline for submissions: September 15, 2022.

Renfrew-Collingwood bike route to New Brighton Pool 1. Take the Slocan Street bike route. Going up the hill next to Van Tech high school and just before Broadway is the worst part of the ride. 2. Continue on Slocan. Rest in the shade at Clinton Park and 1st Avenue, if you like. 3. Turn right at Adanac. Turn left at Kaslo. 4. Follow Kaslo until you hit the Portside route. Take in the views of the waterfront. Ride past the horse barns of the PNE’s Hastings Park racecourse on your right. 5. Continue on Portside, going under the train bridge, until you reach New Brighton Pool.
From Slocan, turn right at Adanac then left at Kaslo.
The salmon burger from the concession stand is the best part of the ride. Or try the fish and chips.

Vaccines for Children Under 5
Approximately 208,000 eligible infants and children in British Columbia between six months and four years of age will soon be able to receive vaccine protection against COVID-19. Following Health Canada’s approval of the Moderna vaccine, and the National Advisory Committee on Immunization’s (NACI) recommendation on its use, for those aged six months to four years, regional health authorities will start offering this vaccine at clinics throughout the province on Aug. 2, 2022. B.C. has the capacity and experience to deliver this COVID-19 vaccination campaign for this new age group. Since the start of the vaccination campaign in B.C., almost 12 million doses have been administered to eligible people. The Seniors Connection
Seniors day trip to Shannon Falls and Whistler by Penny Lim Early July, dramatic weather greeted our group when we headed out on the Thunderbird Community Centre day trip to Shannon Falls and Whistler. I puffed up a steep trail to Shannon Falls – very rewarding in the downpour. It brought back memories of my mountain hiking days. Most stop at the viewpoint, which is comfortable. Whistler was so overcast, no mountains were visible at all. At the Audain Museum, I marvelled at the Wolves exhibit carved by Dempsey Bob. Striking the eyes were the influences in his work: Maori, Mesoamerica and Africa. I marvelled at his remarkable use of different woods, including alder.

Eating out in RC: Miss Siam food truck by Julie Cheng
Broadway Tech Centre (Renfrew and Hebb) Usually Mondays and Wednesdays 11 am to 2 pm Check location and time at misssiam.ca or @streetfoodapp facebook.com/MissSiamFood/ “No mango salad today,” said Lek. “The mangoes are too ripe.” Seeing my pained expression, she told me that she’ll make papaya salad next week, as customers have been asking for it. I’ve been hooked on Miss Siam’s fresh green mango salad ever since I saw a line-up in front of the food truck one day while walking to a nearby appointment. Because of my high cholesterol, I eat more salads, and this one is a refreshing change from the usual lettuce ones I make. I also suspect, like green papaya, that green mango is full of enzymes that help digestion. Lek, the friendly chef-owner, recalls growing up in the countryside in southern Thailand always eating fresh fruits and vegetables. Hence the mango and papaya salads as well as dishes chock full of vegetables.
The Miss Siam food truck brings Thai street food to the Broadway Tech Centre (kitty corner to the Renfrew SkyTrain station) usually on Mondays and Wednesdays. Photos by Julie Cheng
It seems many of Lek’s customers work at the Broadway Tech Centre and know her by name. I mentioned to one customer, “The green curry is so delicious.” He replied, “The red one is even better.” I’ve now tried both the green and red curries, and I can’t decide which one is better – both are amazing – as is the pad Thai. For these dishes, you can choose your own protein such as chicken, prawns or tofu.
(Above) Miss Siam’s Pad Thai and green mango salad give you healthy servings of vegetables. (Left) Red curry pineapple with chicken has a smooth curry flavour with a delightful sour note from the pineapple. The walk down and up the hill to Miss Siam is well worth the effort and makes a welcome break from the home office. On a recent Friday, I also noticed the Thai Box on Truck in the same location and made a mental note to check this out.

A passion for community and crafting by Jodi Weir In February 2022, I started working part time at Collingwood Neighbourhood House. Working as an office assistant gives me the opportunity to meet lots of different people within the organization, including the board of directors. Everyone here is friendly and helpful and you can feel how much the staff care about this organization from the ground up. I love working for a non-profit organization because the focus of our work is on helping the community, not driving sales or profits. Working for a neighbourhood house aligns with my values and makes me feel like I’m helping to make a positive difference in people’s lives. I enjoyed being part of the organizing team for the volunteer appreciation event that was held virtually in April and I look forward to being able to help with an in-person version of it next year.
As well, I am enjoying my veggie delivery every Friday as part of the community-supported agriculture (CSA) program. I’ve always been a supporter of the Vancouver Food Bank, but in these difficult economic times, I wanted to do more to help our community with food scarcity. Signing up for the CSA delivery has been a win-win for me. I encourage others to consider it too. Every week I receive beautiful greens and other seasonal vegetables and through my donation, another low-income member will also receive fresh veggies. In my spare time on the weekend, you will find me selling my jewelry at the Vancouver farmers markets. I’m a regular craft vendor at both the Riley Park location on Saturdays, as well as the Mount Pleasant Market on Sundays.

SAVE MONEY AND UPCYCLE YOUR CLOTHES by Sophia Han

The upside of upcycling
has a web page. You can:
How many times do you wear clothes before you throw them away? Shockingly, people in Metro Vancouver throw away thousands of tonnes of clothing each year.
Read the articles http://renfrewcollingwood communitynews.com/category/ read-on/
This is both wasteful and expensive. Canadian families spend $2,000 a year on clothes. Instead of throwing old clothes away, we can upcycle them. Upcycling means that we change old clothes into clothes that look more updated and stylish. We can also use the material from old clothes to make new things like scarves, hats or bags.

How to upcycle your clothes
UPPER INTERMEDIATE
It’s easier than you think to breathe new life into worn-out clothes. Of course, cast-offs can be used as rags and dish cloths, but you can also cut up old clothes and use the fabric to upcycle other items in your closet. Here are some ideas to try for your first upcycling project: 1. Add something decorative like an embroidered patch. 2. Cut up the clothes into fabric for crafts like quilting or macrame. 3. Take apart and restitch the clothing into something completely different. 4. Decorate clothes with acrylic paint.

2021 Community Vision Award recipient shares impact of nomination A year after receiving Collingwood Neighbourhood House’s Community Vision Award, Jillian Tale continues to pursue her passion for early childhood education. The Community Vision Award, which includes a $500 scholarship, is given to a Grade 12 student from Windermere Secondary School. It aims to support a student with a connection to CNH and/or who has volunteered in the neighbourhood, and is entering a diploma program for early childhood education, community services or community development. Jillian, who started her Early Childhood Education studies at Douglas College last fall, recently obtained her license to be an Early Childhood Education Assistant. She currently works with infants and toddlers at Port Moody’s The Kids Academy. “[The award] helped me move forward and pay for the class I needed to get my license,” she said. Now finishing her first year at Douglas College, Jillian hopes to build transfer credits to Capilano University to do a Bachelor’s, and then a Master’s in Early Childhood Education. Jillian, who also lives in the Renfrew Collingwood neighbourhood, credits her time volunteering for the community in helping her figure out what she wanted to do and what her passions were. She started volunteering in the neighbourhood, as well as for Collingwood Neighbourhood House, during high school. “I found out through volunteering that I actually loved working with children,” she said. “I would do activities like cooking, arts and crafts, lego, and reading with the kids.” She encourages young people to volunteer for the community as a way to figure out what they want to do in life. “Get out there as much as you can, as soon as you possibly could. Ask friends if you want to do volunteering together… it was less scary volunteering with my friends. We all figured out what we wanted to do and what our passions were as well. It helps a lot, going out and getting into the community,” Jillian said. The Community Vision Award is announced annually at CNH’s Annual General Meeting. This year’s recipient will be announced in September.
