Why I love Renfrew-Collingwood: Livable, accessible, friendly by Julie Cheng
Renfrew-Collingwood is a special place where its warm and friendly residents of diverse cultures— pioneers and newcomers, young and old—live together in harmony and feel like they belong. The locals come out in droves to two annual festivals to celebrate this diversity: Collingwood Days and the Renfrew Ravine Harvest Moon Festival.

This historic residential neighbourhood is tucked away on the eastern edge of Vancouver on the border of Burnaby, B.C. The neighbourhood is home to hidden gems, from unexpected sweeping mountain views and the Renfrew Ravine (an urban forest with a salmon-bearing creek running through it) to Carleton School (one of the oldest schoolhouses in Vancouver) to many authentic, ethnic restaurants including Chinese, Japanese, Malaysian, Filipino, Italian and Indian. It’s always been an easy neighbourhood to get to. In the 1890s the interurban tram connected Renfrew-Collingwood to the rest of Vancouver. Today two Skytrain lines run through it, carrying residents to and from work in a matter of minutes, north to Port Moody (on the brand-new Evergreen line), east to Burnaby and Surrey and west to downtown Vancouver. Walking or cycling is a great way to discover the neighbourhood. Why do you love Renfrew-Collingwood? Please let us know! Email rccnews-editorial@cnh.bc.ca.

The earth’s surface is covered by 70% water. Only 3% is fresh water, and less than 1% is accessible for personal uses. How would you feel about a brand name company being able to access your water supply in the middle of a drought, while withdrawing the water that you and your community rely on for only a price of $2.25 per one million litres? You may be familiar with the brand name Nestle, known for their countless products ranging from food to cosmetics. The Switzerland-based company is currently extracting millions of litres of water from Hope B.C., and profiting through their bottled water industry and much more. Up until 2016, Nestle has been profiting off our water for free, until they were required to pay $2.25, which only covered their access fee, per every million litres. However, this enormous corporation withdraws millions of litres of water while paying Hope less than $15 a day. Their plastic water bottles alone are sold around the world and back to the citizens of Hope for over $6 for a pack of 12 bottles. What is supposedly a human right for everyone is being taken by large corporations like Nestle, and sold back to us without us even considering where the water comes from,or why we buy it. Troubled by this, a group of 30 youth is taking action and raising awareness for this problem through social media, newsletters, petitions, videos and more. By doing this, we hope Nestle will stop stealing our water and take responsibility of the damages they have created on Hope. Cindy Chen, Jessica Sun and Alyssa Yan are Grade 11 students in the Leadership program at Windermere Secondary. Cindy enjoys learning about social justice and sustainability. Jessica is passionate about environmental sustainability and social rights. Alyssa is dedicated to giving back to her community through volunteering ranging from organizing community events to teaching kids piano.

Community engagement through arts and culture in RenfrewCollingwood by Yoko Tomita
The Collingwood Artisan Village Market celebrated its 8th year, bringing arts and crafts to the community on December 3, 2016, at Collingwood Neighbourhood House. This warm, seasonal event brought together artisans and crafters with community members, youth volunteers and recent newcomers to Canada. As always, this event was a wonderful opportunity to see the creative talent residing in our community as well as a chance to purchase locally made gifts for family and friends. Before market day, community members got together to bake cookies and gingerbread houses with Najia Elacel. As a token of appreciation, volunteers and performers were given homemade cookies in decorative boxes for their wonderful contribution. During the big day, 20 artisans showcased their work, ranging from felt craft and knitwear to handmade jewelry, baked goods and wood carving. The Food Security program provided organic hot chocolate, apple cider and dried apple chips—all were greatly appreciated! Social Culture Club members shared their crafts skills and friendship through knitting, sewing, and their shared stories of their life experiences with newcomers and long-time residents. One of the Culture Club’s talented members is Uma, the senior knitting guru of the club. Originally from India, she has made new friends at the club and shared her skills with others. Lately, local youth have been joining the Saturday group, and have been learning from Uma how to knit – even recording how she knits by using their phones! This is a great opportunity for one generation to pass on knowledge and skills to another generation. Some of the club members were making the ever-popular flower pins with felt and yarn while socializing and listening to the talented musical duo of Katie and Karen playing accordion and violin

The Morning Star Breakfast and Shower program has thrived under his stewardship and provides not only a hot, nutritious breakfast but a friendly, welcoming atmosphere each week for homeless or precariously housed people in Vancouver. Memorial for David Hanuse Saturday, Jan. 7, 1 pm Collingwood Neighbourhood House gym Dave Hanuse passed away this year in October. Dave was a former board director at Collingwood Neighbourhood House (CNH), an elder to CNH’s Aboriginal youth and a volunteer with CNH’s Families Branching Out Program. All are welcome.
The Danish word hygge (HOOG-uh to rhyme with sugar) does not have a direct English translation, but cozy often gets mentioned. The website Visit Denmark defines it here: In essence, hygge means creating a nice, warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people around you. The warm glow of candlelight is hygge. Friends and family – that’s hygge too. And let’s not forget the eating and drinking – preferably sitting around the table for hours on end discussing the big and small things in life. Perhaps the Danish idea of hygge explains why Danes are often considered the happiest people in the world? In the cold, dark days of winter, discover your hygge.
Survey for Joyce-Collingwood – Deadline Jan. 10 In June 2016, Vancouver city councill approved the Joyce-Collingwood Station Precinct Plan. The plan sets out directions for future growth and development in the vicinity of the station area. When the plan was approved, city council identified an opportunity to connect the precinct area with Kingsway, and directed staff to investigate opportunities for additional affordable housing, including rental housing, as well as transportation and public realm improvements. Share your thoughts on the potential opportunities in this short questionnaire! Your feedback will help inform planning to create a policy statement that would be amended to the main Precinct Plan. To take the survey, copy and paste the full URL below into your browser: https://www.talkvancouver.com/R.aspx?r=ZT 2MP6SL0iw0P1iJ26Fh0n&m=600000229 The questionnaire will be open until Jan. 10, 2017. Share your thoughts on character homes! – Survey deadline Jan. 15 The City of Vancouver is conducting a Character Home Zoning Review to explore ways of retaining pre-1940 character homes in single-family areas (also called RS zones). The review is also looking at ways of improving the fit of new homes with older neighbourhoods they may be built in. This review was initiated in response to community concerns about demolitions of high-quality older homes and the size and scale of new homes being built in single family neighbourhoods. Share your thoughts on character homes and the options to help retain them! This questionnaire will take about 12 minutes to complete, and your input will inform recommendations to Vancouver city council in early 2017. To take the survey, copy and paste the full URL below into your browser: https://www.talkvancouver.com/R.aspx?r=Ix6 ma8Vt1X83Y82mq4hJ3N&m=600000224 The survey will be open until Jan. 15, 2017.

Sensei Marlon Bonilla (top left) and Sensei Marilina (top right) with their students at the Western Canadian Martial Arts Championships. When we last visited Intention Martial Arts Academy, husband and wife team Marlon and Marilina Bonilla were just opening their doors at the corner of Boundary and Kingsway. Seven years later, Intention Martial Arts is going strong with over 100 students in their four main programs: Karate, MMA, Ninjitsu and the STX KICKBOXING program. There are four levels to IntentionMAA’s Karate program. Karate Prep is for ages 3-4.5 and is the best way to get your young child classroom ready. Next they can enjoy the Lil Dragons which is for ages 4.5-6.5. At this level, in addition to the physical kicking and punching skills, your son or daughter will learn how to use discipline, respect, self-control and teamwork to excel in academic school, as well as, at home with you. From here, they are ready to move on to Junior’s Karate (ages 7-13) and Adult Karate. Another program at IntentionMAA is Combat Submission Wrestling or Mixed Martial Arts. Marlon is a certified coach under Sensei Erik Paulson who has trained such notable MMA athletes as Josh Barnett, Ken Shamrock, and Brock Lesnar. “Taught in a safe, high energy training environment, our program is one of the most complete mixed martial arts programs anywhere and will get you in the best shape of your life.” Also offered at IntentionMAA is Modern Ninjutsu, a realistic approach to self defense that utilizes techniques that are effective in real life situations. Both Sensei Marlon and

Sensei Marlina are personally trained by Grandmaster Will Maier. Intention Martial Arts Academy is the Canadian home for the International Modern Ninjutsu Association. Finally, there is the STX KICKBOXING program. This is a Full body Kickboxing program that will get you in the best shape of your life while learning effective striking techniques from Muay Thai and French Savate kickboxing. In the past seven years also, IntentionMAA has produced 10 black belts. The youngest of those is Ryan Tom who began the Little Dragons program seven years ago at age four. His mother, Leah Tom, says “Our family has been taking class at Intention Martial Arts since they opened 7 years ago and our experience has been excellent overall. For my kids, training at Intention Martial Arts not only has them working on a skill set as young martial artists, it sets a positive tone for their overall life experience.” In addition to learning the skills and getting in shape, part of the joy of learning martial arts is in competing. The members at IntentionMAA have begun to enter more ‘open tournaments’ which are tournaments that include all martial arts. In the 2014 World Games, Marlon represented Team Canada and won two medals: A bronze medal in Point Fighting and the Gold in Brazilian Jujitsu and Grappling. Way to go Marlon! The games were attended by over 70 countries and 800 competitors. Also in the past seven years, Marlon and Marilina now have two sons. Congratulations!

We will be celebrating Lunar New Year, Collingwood Days, Canada Day, Collingwood International Film Festival and to complete our year we will have our Winter Carnival. We will also begin our renewal process. Our seven year mandate ends 2018. We want to hear from our members (all the businesses in Collingwood, Boundary Road to Rupert along Kingsway). We will be coming by to visit everyone this year for your feedback on how the Collingwood BIA is doing and what you’d like to see for the future. We encourage business to contact the office and we are always looking for board members to help shape Collingwood BIA’s vision. 2017 should be filled with exciting projects to continue to improve Collingwood business area.
