Chris Taulu Community Excellence Award Nominations open January 6 by Andrea Berneckas In May 2019, Chris Taulu was recognized for her enormous contributions to the betterment of Renfrew-Collingwood. She received the first-ever Community Excellence Award at the Collingwood Days festival, supported by her colleagues at the Collingwood Policing Centre, friends and community members. The recipient of this award exemplifies the qualities of leadership, equity, compassion, mentorship and commitment to the Renfrew-Collingwood community. Chris Taulu has been an advocate for the community and pillar of our city for more than 45 years. Her activism first took off in the 1980s when she championed improvements to children’s education. In 1994, she pioneered the establishment of Collingwood Community Policing Centre, the first organization of its kind in Vancouver and the model for what would grow into 11 community policing centres in our city today. It was here at Collingwood that Chris dedicated years of her life to creating safe communities through a partnership between the police and the people of Vancouver. Chris Taulu received the first-ever Community Excellence Award this past May at Collingwood Days 2019 at Gaston Park.
Chris is one of the founders of the Collingwood Neighbourhood House, worked with the Living in Community Society to support marginalized sex trade workers and actively promoted social housing, quality public education and crime prevention. Chris’s incredible list of accomplishments include her work on the Collingwood Village project, her formation of a city-wide parent association, her part in the founding of the Living in Community project and the SAFE project, and her current work on the Joyce Station Plan.

Three Links Manor Open House and Art Bazaar What’s more fun on a crisp autumn day than walking through Vancouver’s RenfrewCollingwood neighbourhood observing the colourful leaves on the trees, then watching them fall to the ground blanketing the sidewalks? Well, nothing! But there might be! On Saturday, November 16, 2019, Three Links Manor held their 1st Art Bazaar. Displaying their artistic creations were Richard Hildebrandt, Linda Mullin and Joseph Loh — three talented and unique artists.
Also at the gathering were two truly magical people — Lynnea Thorkelson and Sam King, both from the Three Links Care Centre.

The Other Guy’s Opinion: A 2020 vision Soon we will be starting 2020. I truly wish that the leaders of this great country would have 2020 vision going forward. It starts with the federal government, then the provincial and then the municipal. But it finally ends with you and me and the rest of Canadians to guide these people to where we want to be in this year. To start, the federal government has promised to promote the idea of two million new trees to be planted to combat global warming. This is an opportunity for Indigenous people and environmentalists to step forward to make this happen. By them participating, our environment will take a step forward. Whether it’s planting trees, having windmills or driving electric cars (and the list goes on), environmentalists as well as all Canadians can find ways in which to help Mother Nature fight against global warming. When it comes to pipelines, the federal Conservatives should be the first ones to stand in line with their co-workers in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland. In their election campaign last year, they made a feeble attempt on how to get our natural resources to market, especially our oil and gas. If the Conservatives are sincere about the concerns, they would work diligently to convince British Columbia and Québec governments to act in good faith for all Canadians, not just their provinces. Whether it’s these provinces in mention, environmentalists or First Nations, there is not one of them that does not contribute to global warming by heating their homes, driving their cars or other items that consume gasoline and natural gas. If the Conservatives were really sincere in addressing these issues, they would work diligently to see that all Canadians from coast to coast to coast
prosper by getting our natural resources (gas, oil and lumber with other materials) to the global market. As for the shortage of affordable livable quarters in the most expensive cities in Canada, once again the federal NDP does the talk but has no way of doing the walk. This needs to be addressed as a national emergency in the large cities. The federal NDP should join hands with the provincial and municipal governments and lay out plans that will be acceptable to land assemblies. We as Canadians live in one of the best countries in the world. We enjoy a quality of life that is the envy of many people throughout the world. Nevertheless, unless we start working together as governments and people, we may find ourselves unable to continue to enjoy that quality of life. It is long overdue that each and everyone of us join the dreams of others and compromise to make them come true. It starts with you and me and it ends the long road to the governments of municipalities, provinces and nationally. I sincerely wish each and everyone of us makes one year’s resolution and that is having 2020 vision towards looking forward to one of the greatest years in our country. Windermere students call for a crosswalk at 27th and Nootka by Coco Aschmann-cross Grade 9 students at Windermere Secondary are petitioning for a much-needed crosswalk at 27th Avenue and Nootka. Windermere high school is situated halfway between Rupert Street and Nootka Street and stretches from 24th to 27th avenues. The buses run up and down on both Rupert and Nootka streets, delivering a great number of students to Windermere. The number 16 bus on Nootka stops at 23rd, 25th and 27th avenues. However, there are only crosswalks on 22nd and 29th, both of which require a detour of several blocks when walking from the bus stop to the school. As a result, most kids cross the street without a crosswalk to save time to get to class.
a new crosswalk at the bus stop of 27th Avenue and Nootka so students and teachers can have a safe and direct connection between the bus and the school. The crosswalk would also benefit the people who take the SkyTrain and often walk down the ravine to avoid walking beside the busy road. This new proposed crosswalk would mirror a crosswalk on 27th Avenue and Rupert and also creates a safe and efficient corridor. You can show your support by signing the students’ petition in print or online at https://www. change.org/p/adrian-dix-crosswalk-for-27th-ave-and-nootkast-in-vancouver . This new year – 2020 – is very important. Why? Because it signals the beginning of another decade.

The young may look at this with excitement because it signals another new chapter in their lives that promises to bring them many interesting experiences.

But the older you are, the less important and exciting a new year becomes. This is not simply because it is a reminder that older people have less time on earth ahead of them. It is also because, in their lives, they have seen many interesting things and had many experiences and so do not become as excited by the prospect of change. Change means growing and learning and exploring and adventure. It means becoming and doing who knows what. That is why people who love change are usually young. To others – usually older folks who have seen many changes and growth in their lives – change means they are nearing the time when they can, or do not want to, do such things. This may seem sad to the young, but to the older it often means peace. To the young, every new year, every new decade, brings new excitements, new experiences, growth and more understanding. But to the older it brings memories, appreciation and acceptance.

The following is a paid advertisement by Adrian Dix, MLA for Vancouver/Kingsway Dear Neighbours: Happy New Year! I want to wish you all a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2020. As we enter the New Year, I would love to hear your feedback on how we can better support you and your family and ideas on workshops or activities you would like to see more of in the community, so do not hesitate to be in touch. A sincere thanks to everyone who came to our Holiday Open House on December 21st. We had a packed house and it was great to catch up with our friends and neighbours. John Norquay Elementary Playground Upgrade In November, we celebrated the opening of Norquay Elementary’s accessible playground upgrade through the Playground Equipment Program (PEP). Launched in 2018, our government has invested $10 million to provide 101 new playgrounds to schools throughout the province. Norquay received $105,000 for a new, universally accessible playground from the Ministry of Education’s 2019-2020 funding announcement. For more information, please visit https://news.gov.bc.ca/19181. MSP Premium Elimination After years of MSP premium increases, I am proud to announce the elimination of MSP premiums for British Columbians in January 2020. The people of our province will receive their last bill in December 2019. Everyone should be able to access British Columbia’s health-care system without having to worry whether or not they can pay their MSP premiums. The elimination represents a net tax cut of $800 million. Individuals will save up to $900 a year and families will save up to $1,800 a year. MSP beneficiaries who have auto-payments through their financial institution are reminded to cancel that arrangement to ensure payments to the Province do not continue. They are also reminded to keep their accounts up-to-date with MSP, including address changes. For more information about your account, please call Health Insurance BC at 604-683-7151. Our community office is located at 5022 Joyce Street and is open from Monday to Thursday 9AM – 4PM and Friday by appointment. Feel free to contact us at 604660-0314 or adrian.dix.mla@leg.bc.ca. My staff and I are here to help you on matters related to provincial government services and ministries. I look forward to seeing you soon! Sincerely, Adrian Dix, MLA Vancouver-Kingsway

By Kayla Isomura Each year, a group of Grade 11 and 12 students at Windermere Secondary School puts their learning into action by organizing a clothing drive for Collingwood Neighbourhood House’s (CNH) Morning Star program.

“Windermere [Secondary] School’s Law 12 classes have been studying homelessness and housing justice for 10 years,” said Donna Lee, who teaches the course. “Students are tasked with learning about the causes of homelessness and housing insecurity, and to look at measures which have created housing security.”

By hosting an annual clothing drive, the students are raising awareness about homelessness in the neighbourhood, she noted.
Up to 70 people use Morning Star services each Saturday morning, with the program primarily operating through the support of volunteers.
Further, they learn to work with each other and local organizations.
This also includes students in Grade 4 to 6 from St. Mary’s School who collect food and clothing for Morning Star twice a year. To have support from “the next generation” is really important, said Mateescu. “Their passion and enthusiasm is bringing together the community to support marginalized individuals,” she said. Morning Star is primarily run through the support of volunteers and donations. For those interested in getting involved, contact Ana Mateescu at: 604-435-0323 (ext. 231) or at: amateescu@cnh.bc.ca.

Morning Star is safe, welcoming, and offers services for people in need, explained Ana Mateescu, Homelessness Coordinator at CNH.
