Celebrating 18 years of Collingwood Days by Andrea Berneckas
This July 2021 the neighbourhood will celebrate the 18th year of Collingwood Days. As we navigate through this most challenging of times into a summer of hope, let’s meet with friends and family to enjoy the neighbourhood and the province we live in. Now is the time for recuperation and renewal. This year’s themes focus on wellness and connection to nature – both of which are as important as ever. This is also a time of building bridges and bringing people together, and in that vein, Collingwood Days has partnered with Renfrew-Collingwood PRIDE this year. RC Pride will co-host the July 16 opening event that starts at 5288 Joyce Street. A blessing and unveiling of four Collingwood Neighbourhood House (CNH) benches designed and painted by community groups will be followed by a parade to Collingwood Park for entertainment, a marketplace and movie night. During July, there will dance lessons at the CNH Annex Plaza (3690 Vanness) every Saturday evening – everything from salsa to Indian dance. Also try your hand at Make Your Mark! sketching in local parks at the Norquay Food Forest and at Il Giardino at the Italian Cultural Centre (while there, drop by their marketplace Il Mercato and their art gallery Il Museo). From July 23 to August 6, join the RenfrewCollingwood Bubble Tea Crawl and check out Photos by Mark Evans

Meet neighbours like Miriam at Collingwood Days Community member Miriam Mattila will be turning 85 years old on July 26. Miriam’s family moved to the Collingwood neighbourhood from Saskatchewan at age two and they lived for a time with her aunt and uncle. For a short time, she attended Sir Guy Carleton Elementary with her siblings. Miriam commented that she must be one of the very few people who went to Carleton at that time that lives in Collingwood today. She recalled that when she was six years old, she convinced her fiveyear-old brother and his friend to walk all the way from their home in Collingwood to the house that her father was building in Burnaby. Needless to say, their parents were very worried about them until they found them! At age seven, her family moved to their new home in Burnaby. A couple of years ago, Miriam moved back to Collingwood and now lives very close to her first home here. Welcome back, Miriam!

Collingwood Corner: Sir Wilfred Grenfell school report cards from the 1960s with PNE tickets by Loretta Houben
It’s the most wonderful time of year where we can shout “school’s out!” When I attended Grenfell School, we were just as thrilled when the end of the school year arrived, and we were let loose for two glorious months of summer holidays. A few things have changed since then. I can’t imagine enduring the COVID-19 pandemic protocols that the youth of 2021 have had to face, although each decade brings its hardships. In the 1960s and 1970s school life was stricter. Until 1970, our classroom desks were kept in straight rows. At the start of each assembly we sang God Save the Queen with a Bible reading by a student. A few naughty boys were sent to the office for “the strap.” Occasionally I had to stand in the corner of the classroom as punishment for talking out of turn. Our grades were marked with A, B, Cs. The reports were filled in with handwritten notes each semester by the teacher. The parent signed the report card each term. I have all my elementary school reports from 1965 to 1973. After Grade 8 in Windermere Secondary, the reports were issued on stiff yellow paper with a computer chain printer. The teacher had to choose random pre-typed phrases to describe the student’s progress through the year. It wasn’t as personal as the previous style of reporting. At the end of each elementary school year, each report card had a ticket for the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) stapled to it. I have three tickets remaining, so those are the years we couldn’t afford the PNE, even with all the kids in the family getting a free entrance. The PNE was definitely a highlight when we did go. I loved the animals, cotton candy and hot dogs. My most thrilling ride was the carousel with all the lovely horses. I can still ride it at the Burnaby Village Museum. Did you know that it was restored and installed there years ago? So if the PNE is still closed this year due to the pandemic, you can catch a memory at the museum. Loretta Houben is a long-time resident of the Collingwood area, whose happy school memories go far back. If you have any school memories you’d like to share we’d love to hear about them. Please contact rccnewseditorial@cnh.bc.ca.

we imagined that patios here would be noisy and polluted from the traffic. Then I remembered Paul Reid’s 2018 Eating Out in RC restaurant review of Boteco Brasil, and what he called “probably RenfrewCollingwood’s best patio.” We arrived in time for happy hour, only to find all the patio tables had been reserved (there are fewer tables due to COVID physical distancing rules). Luckily, we scored one of their new picnic
tables on the street. Despite being on busy Nanaimo Street, the colourful fence and flower boxes made the table cozy, and the traffic didn’t bother us. The kind server described a couple different salads and we were intrigued by the Salada de Palmito ($14.95) – a hearty, delicious bowl of mixed greens, hearts of palm, tomatoes, carrots and olives with a balsamic dressing. The hearts of palm were juicy and tasted mild, like artichoke hearts. I discovered that they come from the centre of certain types of palm trees and are low in calories and rich in protein and potassium, copper and zinc. From the happy hour menu we ordered the Picanha Aperitivo ($14 during happy hour or $17.50), consisting of tasty, tender pieces of sirloin steak topped with carmelized onion and served with farofa (toasted cassava flour), salsa and fries. These two dishes, along with our cool drinks, served on the patio, did indeed make us happy that summer afternoon. You’ve got to experience it for yourself.

The Matriarch’s gathering

by Paul Reid
The People of the Salmon explained more about the gathering. “It is our connection to the land that we are here. Honouring our land is honouring our mother’s mother and honouring our mother’s mother is honouring our land. On this day we opened our hearts with love, peace and harmony, as we walk forward together on the Creator’s path of kindness.” “The gathering is held as our responsibility to ourselves, in lifting up our mothers’ mothers and honour their children who were and are stolen from them with lies, torture and
murder. Our ancient wisdom has been put to sleep through the program of absolute fear and it’s time to wake up!”
IN CELEBRATION OF CHARLES MAREGA AT 150
A Matriarch’s gathering was held with sacred fire, prayers and traditional ceremony, through the summer solstice of 2021 by the People of the Salmon which includes Coast Salish Peoples–Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/ Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Peoples. Joining the group around the sacred fire that night on June 20, I learned more about the meaning of this gathering and the history of the land that we were on.
The gathering took place at an ancient meeting place of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Selilwitulh and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm Peoples, later to be known as the East Vancouver School.
Pathways to Modernity
“The first people were evicted from this land with force, making way for colonizers to set up their own community. This is the location of the first school built in this area. We were not invited. These lands, that were held in perfect balance and harmony, since creation was seen by Corporation as available and ‘free;’ yet it was and remains stolen.”

Take in local arts and culture this summer by John Mendoza
In 1994 my own life changed significantly when I committed to volunteer as a docent at a small museum in downtown Vancouver. The serene surroundings of the Canadian Craft Museum was hidden at the opposite
end of a courtyard behind an office building whose neighbours were the Hotel Vancouver and the Vancouver Art Gallery. Surrounding this small courtyard was a forest of office buildings, speaking to the modernity of the downtown core.
Passing through those glass doors and signing up to be a museum docent was no easy feat. The arrival of every new exhibition at the museum meant having to listen to the curator’s tours of the art works and learn a little bit about artistic technique.

The Seniors Connection Three Links Care Centre hires laid off care aides to unify team by David Hurford
Like many care homes across British Columbia, the Three Links Care Society has been contracting out a range of services to a private health care agency since 2007. These include accounting, recreation, rehabilitation and care-aide staff. In 2018, Three Links decided to discontinue the accounting contract with the private agency. They did the same with recreation and rehab services in January 2021. In each case, Three Links took these important services back in-house. In March, the private care contractor made a business decision to end their care-aide contract with Three Links. With this, they provided lay-off notices to approximately 50 care aides on-site, effective July 25, 2021. While this was a difficult situation for these devoted care aides, Three Links quickly reassured all Call 604-435-0375 For info and to register
of these health-care heroes of their intention to have them continue working at the care centre to serve the seniors they have all become so close to. This news was well-received by the care-aide team. Since then, Three Links started working closely with the Hospital Employees Union (HEU), Health Employers Association (HEABC) and Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) to unify the entire care-centre team. With guidance from VCH scheduling experts, Three Links established five principles to guide the complex transition process and implement a new scheduling rotation: • Inclusion: Ongoing engagement with care aides and continuous quality improvement. • Focus on full time: Move toward more full-time shifts. • Respect collective agreements: Work closely with HEU throughout the process.
Welcome to the Three Links team! Some of the amazing care aides who deliver quality care to seniors at Three Links. Photo by Dawne Koke • Care model: Maintain cohort model for staffing adopted during the pandemic. • Smooth transition: Minimize disruption for residents, families and staff during the transition while individual situations are responded to. In June, laid off care aides were invited to a job fair to select their favourite shifts. With the new rotations, the total number of full-time care aides will nearly double to 36. As of the end of June, almost all of the laid off care aides have been offered jobs at Three Links.

Collingwood Days From July 16 to the 30, Renfrew-Collingwood will celebrate the cultures of its 50,000 residents at Collingwood Days. This year’s event will be an “old-fashioned fair with a multicultural flair.” Since 2003, the neighbourhood has come together to celebrate the diversity of its residents. More than 50% of the people who live here speak a mother tongue other than English, including Chinese, Tagalog, Vietnamese and Punjabi.

Multiculturalism is the idea that society benefits when people from different cultures can live peacefully with each other without fear of losing their cultural identity. Canada’s multicultural heritage is protected by law. The Canadian government passed a law in 1988 acknowledging that Canadians come from different backgrounds and that they have the right to practice their traditions without fear of persecution. It is often said that multiculturalism is an important part of Canada’s national identity.

Throughout the pandemic, front line workers have been essential in keeping our communities going and we recognize many hard-working people are still struggling to make ends meet. Our government believes that all workers should make a fair and dignified wage. We’ve recently increased the minimum wage in B.C. to $15.20 an hour and eliminated the discriminatory lower minimum wage for liquor servers – these workers will now make the regular minimum wage. Since 2018, we’ve been regularly increasing the minimum wage, which was $11.35 an hour when this work began. I would like to extend a warm 1st birthday wish to RISE Community Health Centre!
