Collingwood Days are back! July 15 — 23 “We are currently preparing for our annual Collingwood Days Festival, which will be happening on July 23rd this year at Gaston Park,” says Community Connections and Celebrations Coordinator Sussan Yáñez. “The week full of community events and workshops starts July 15th and culminates with the community festival at Gaston. “This year we have also introduced a project called Breathing Life Back into Waterways, with the intention to fulfill some of the Truth and Reconciliation calls to action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples by making space for Indigenous folks to take leadership on their ancestral territories and to provide newcomers and the Renfrew Collingwood area and its 40,000-plus commuters with educational resources of the living stories of the Indigenous peoples and ecosystems that still thrive through asphalt and concrete.

Collingwood Corner:

Another view of the Collingwood Theatre at 4926 Joyce Street

by Loretta Houben

Looking south up Joyce Road from Wellington Avenue. A paving crew is hard at work. Notice the wooden plank sidewalks. Source: Vancouver Archives, date unknown One of my favourite hobbies is staring at vintage photos in the Vancouver Archives online. The more I look, the more I see. Some of the photos are blurred, but many are very clear, taken with a good lens. Compared to 2022 and our digital-camera age, there are few images of Collingwood to view from times long past. I therefore appreciate the photographers who lived over 110 years ago and took time to set up their large and ungainly cameras to take these pictures that fascinate so many of us to this day. The photo that startled me recently was taken at the corner of Wellington Avenue and Joyce Street looking south. At the top of it you can clearly see Carleton School, including the original schoolhouse sitting near Joyce and the fire hall in front. Workmen are busily paving Joyce Street, and the spray or smoke from their machines is hitting a large building on the left, which I believe is the Joyce Theatre. I compared this photo with one from a previous article I wrote (RCC News, March 2021) and the buildings across the road match the ones in the other photo. The way the camera took the picture shows things up close and not realistically,

so I’d never noticed what I was looking at before. The Vanness Avenue intersection is further down the road. I used to think the paving machines were right at Vanness. It was a pleasant surprise to discover I was wrong all this time. They are actually close to Wellington Avenue.

Do you enjoy living in the Collingwood area of Vancouver? Do you have a special story or memory to share? We would love to hear about it, and possibly include it in a project to be completed by October 2022. The booklet will be written by Loretta Houben and will include historical facts and photos, along with your stories. Current residents and newcomers to this area will enjoy reading about this popular, growing part of Vancouver. Please email your story (300 words or less) to Loretta Houben at rccseniorsconnection@gmail.com.

Ceremony starts paddling season for Indigenous youth by Julie Cheng On June 3, the C.R.E.W. program out of Collingwood Neighbourhood House hosted a Canoe Awakening Ceremony at Gaston Park. Dozens of well-wishers and program participants, including paddlers from the Metro Vancouver Transit Police Blue Eagle Community Cadets and the Vancouver Police Department Cadet program, took part in the ceremony and community dinner that followed. A free youth-led program, C.R.E.W. (Culture, Recreation, Education and Work) offers Indigenous youth opportunities to participate in outdoor activities, learn canoe and water safety skills, and gain leadership experience and cultural knowledge. In pre-COVID years, they took part in what’s called Pulling Together Canoe Journey. Samantha Nelson has been a member of the Collingwood C.R.E.W. for five years. “The people are nice and welcoming,” she says of C.R.E.W. She has also been part of the Blue Eagle Cadets for two years, calling it “a fun place to be,” and the VPD Cadets for one year, where they challenge her to be her best. Julia George has been involved in C.R.E.W. for two years now. “There’s always something to do, and there’s food,” she says. The Pulling Together journey she took before COVID hit was physically demanding. “It was a lot of arm work, and my butt hurt, too,” she laughed.

Samantha Nelson and Julia George enjoy the welcoming atmosphere of the C.R.E.W. program.

Arthur Stogan Sr., Thelma Stogan and Felecia Stogan (l to r) conducted the Canoe Awakening Ceremony in the Musqueam tradition, waking the canoes after two years out of use due to COVID, and calling on their ancestors to keep paddlers safe on their journeys. Photos by Julie Cheng To learn more about C.R.E.W., contact Eileen Tann at 604-726-CREW (2739) or etann@cnh.bc.ca.

Puneet Mall, a Collingwood Neighbourhood House board member, has taken part in Pulling Journeys before, calling them “powerful.” With each pull of the paddle, all the paddlers work together and the spirits help them.

Carleton School catchment changes Dear editor, I happened to stumble upon a Vancouver School Board Committee meeting in progress online on June 15. (See the agenda on vsb.bc.ca named 22_06June15_Facilities Planning Committee_Full Agenda.pdf .) One of the agenda items was changing the catchment boundary for Carleton. What is being proposed is to divide up the existing catchment between Cunningham, Weir and MacCorkindale. What will the Carleton catchment be? The school site boundary!

If proposed catchment changes are approved, Figure 3 shows an updated VSB catchment boundary map with enlarged Cunningham, Weir and MacCorkindale catchHow to close a school without going through the process ments and the remnant Carleton catchment. of public consultation! I wonder if one of the questions will be: Do you want your child enrolled at the Carleton site? Karin Bernauer

Liquor store input needed by July 15 Hello, Recently the city rejected the application of the Westcoast Liquor Company from opening their store in the space on Rupert and 22nd across from Renfrew Elementary. The company has decided to appeal that decision and wants to continue to plan to use that space for their business despite many neighbours opposing the idea.

be great to send word out for others in this area to know they can submit their comments to oppose this plan because we are a family-oriented neighbourhood and a liquor store so close to two schools [Renfrew Elementary and Windermere Secondary] would not be ideal. The deadline to receive comments is July 15th and the hearing of the decision to appeal or not will be on July 19th. Thank you, K.W.

Gladstone & Windermere Graduates and Scholarship Winners Congratulations to the Class of 2022! This is an exciting time for all of you and your families and I wish you all the very best in your future endeavors. I am proud each year to sponsor scholarships for Gladstone and Windermere Secondary students and a full list of winners will be announced soon. Collingwood Days – July 16th to the 23rd It’s back! This year marks the return of Collingwood Days in our neighbourhood. Thank you as always to Angela Evans and everyone at the Collingwood BIA for organizing this weeklong festival that brings together so many in our community. There will be events happening throughout the neighbourhood culminating in the Collingwood Days Marketplace at Gaston Park so check out www.collingwooddays.com to see what’s happening throughout the week. Fiji Festival – Saturday, July 16th On Saturday, July 16th, please join me and thousands of others in celebrating the annual Fiji Festival at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby. This free event encourages communities to come together to celebrate traditional Polynesian, Melanesian and Hawaiian dancing, folk songs, and even boasts a Fijian fashion show. This year’s event will be held in memory of Mr. Vincent Prakash who passed away in December 2020. Vincent was the President of the Bula Fiji Association and organizer of the Vancouver Fiji Festival. Preparing for summer heat events Last summer’s unprecedented heat dome impacted all of us in some way, and for some it was tragic. It made it clear we need to do more as a province to be better prepared for extreme heat events. We’ve taken a number of steps to implement the lessons learned from last year’s events to make sure B.C., and our healthcare system, is prepared and resilient during extreme weather events. Thanks to our new BC Heat Alert and Response System, we will be ready to issue alerts for extreme heat emergencies to make sure people are aware and can take steps to protect themselves and their loved ones. This new system also includes a framework on when health and community agencies should enact wellness checks – for those people who may not have anyone close by to check on them. Lastly, if you have a community event that you wish to promote, my community office would be delighted to help spread the word. Please ask us for details on the types of events we can promote at 604-660-0314 or email adrian. dix.mla@leg.bca. My community office is open to provide services to constituents in person with appointments and via phone and email. If you walk along Kingsway in Renfrew-Collingwood, you will notice many bubble tea shops. Bubble tea is a popular treat in East and Southeast Asia. It is a refreshing beverage that is both a drink and a dessert.

Bubble tea was invented in Taiwan during the 1980s. The “bubbles” in the drink are soft, chewy balls made from tapioca that are called “pearls” or boba. Originally, the drink was made using milk, red tea and black tapioca balls.

Nowadays, a bubble tea drink is any drink made from tea, coffee, milk or juice with toppings. Toppings can be ice cream, grass jelly, fresh fruit, shaved ice – anything that tastes delicious in a cool drink. Some drinks even use cream cheese!

Family-owned bubble tea shops opened in Vancouver during the 1990s. These days, you don’t have to travel far to find a bubble tea shop franchise from Taiwan or China. The stretch of Kingsway between Boundary and Cecil Street alone has 10 shops serving bubble tea. One reason for their popularity is because of the Asian mmigrant population. Another is because they often stay open much later than neighbourhood coffee shops, making them ideal hangouts during summer evenings.

RCL#179 CELEBRATES NATIONAL INDIGENOUS PEOPLE’S DAY On Saturday, June 18, RCL Branch #179 celebrated National Indigenous Peoples Day: honouring and celebrating the contributions of Indigenous veterans and community members. The event featured a variety of vendors, amazing entertainment, delicious food and a beer garden — all outside. And as Murray Porter predicted (and due to his reverse rain dance) the rain did hold off and a fun time was had by all.

The crowd was in for a treat when JUNO winner and Mohawk Blues Piano Man Murray Porter took to the stage. Photos courtesy of RCL Branch #179

The highlights included wonderful sets from the talented Murray Porter and Daisy Joe. The Artisan Market featured jewelery, carvings, candles, instruments, bannock and more! Randy Tait was the wonderful emcee for the day. A great big thank you went to Donna Harrison, who worked so hard to get the event up and running in a short period of time. Melanie Mark, the MLA for Vancouver-Mount Pleasant, expressed her gratitude and support for the work that Donna and the RCL #179 had done in celebrating the contributions of Indigenous community members.

Murray was a hard act to follow, but Daisy Joe held her own, gracing us with her fine guitar, ukelele and singing skills.

Donna thanked all of the RCL #179 volunteers who wanted this event to be a success. This event couldn’t have happened without all of their support and enthusiasm and the branch looks forward to building on this event in the years to come.

Eating out in RC: Yummy Slice Pizza by Emily Tam

Yummy Slice Pizza #2 – 2889 Grandview and Renfrew 604-564-6123 yummyslice.ca Yummy Slice Pizza has been open in Renfrew-Collingwood for one year now, as of June 1st. They have seven locations across Vancouver and Richmond that were previously named Fresh Slice, but they rebranded all these locations overnight. This joint is available on UberEats, SkipTheDishes and DoorDash, and they also have their own delivery vehicle. I would highly recommend picking up or calling the store directly for delivery to ensure that all proceeds to directly our local Yummy Slice Pizza. I had the opportunity to try their delicious pizza last month as they invited me to promote their one-year anniversary deal. As a celebration, all their locations offered any eight extra-large slices for only $11.99. It was the perfect occasion for me to try new pizza flavours since I am the type to always get Hawaiian pizza (I still ordered a few slices of their Hawaiian and it was defiThe Hawaiian is sure to be a favourite. nitely my favourite). Though their celebration is over, I would support this local business by grabbing a quick bite while satisfying all our pizza cravings. With so many businesses popping up in RC, it’s the perfect place to grab an inexpensive team lunch. Other than Hawaiian pizza, I also enjoyed the Pesto Chicken and Yummy Meat pizzas. My foodie adventures have led me to enjoying pesto in all my dishes, which I previously never ordered. The next time I have a family gathering, I will definitely order from Yummy Slice so we can all try a variety of new pizza flavours! From my experience, it’s always fun to do a blind taste test – just make sure no one has allergies before doing this.

Any 8 XL slices from the warmer: BBQ chicken bacon, pesto chicken, cheese, yummy meat, Italian, the Canadian, pepperoni and veggie lovers.

CNH Board call for nominations

Collingwood Neighbourhood House (CNH) is accepting nominations for its Board of Directors. This is an exciting time to join our Board as we move on from the pandemic to continue and develop as a vibrant organization. Applicants should live and/or work in RenfrewCollingwood, have a broad understanding of the neighbourhood, feel committed to becoming engaged in improving all aspects of our neighbourhood, and be able to bring expertise and perspectives that increase our organization’s capacity to be equitable and inclusive. We are interested in hearing from people from all backgrounds and ages but are especially interested in applicants who are between the ages of

21-29 or are 55-plus. We are also interested in hearing from individuals who live with a disability. This year we have a particular need for those who have experience in health care, religious/ spiritual associations, and knowledge of government. We are also particularly interested in candidates with relevant lived experience or who are representative of a historically marginalized group. The CNH Board of Directors is committed to an anti-oppressive, anti-racist approach to its work and welcomes those who thrive in a vibrant, welcoming environment. Our Strategic Plan has three strategic priorities: l Connect with and be more accessible, equi-

table and inclusive for people in the community. l Build community capacity to advocate for the future of the people in Renfrew-Collingwood. l Invest in our organizational foundation to support our sustainability and growth. Applicants should be able to spend 8-10 hours per month on Board-related work and be able to commit to a three-year term, starting this October. The deadline for applications is July 8; members of the Board’s Nominations Committee will be contacting applicants during the following two weeks. If you are interested, please contact Board President Leila Trickey at president@cnh.bc.ca.
