Join the local community-supported agriculture and share fresh veggies with your neighbours Receive fresh, local vegetables each week and support your community, local farmers and neighbours by Naiya Tsang Community-supported agriculture (CSA) programs are direct relationships between farmers and community members that involve a subscription to a farm’s harvests. The Community Care CSA gives you an alternative to your weekly trip to the grocery store for vegetables, with the bonus of supporting your neighbours and an educational schoolyard farm. For some, the price of fresh vegetables, let alone a weekly CSA share, can be out of reach. By buying a Community Care CSA share for $40 a week, you ensure that a family or individual facing multiple barriers receives a full box of fresh, local veggies for a highly subsidized cost. The community-supported agriculture program will be housed in a small summer market from 4 to 6 pm on Fridays starting in June (except for July 1) at the front entrance to Collingwood Neighbourhood House, 5288 Joyce Street just south of the SkyTrain station. Community-supported agriculture - continued from page 1 How it works When you sign up, you will receive a Community Care CSA share of fresh, locally grown vegetables, and a lowincome family referred by Collingwood Neighbourhood House staff will receive the same share. For $40 a week over 10 weeks (for a total of $400), you receive a full CSA share each week. (This will be $22.50 worth of vegetables weekly, with the remaining cost going to subsidise the box of a low-income neighbour.) Your CSA box will include five to seven items including greens, root vegetables, fruits (like tomatoes and squash) and herbs, changing with the season, and containing a range of vegetables grown with care using organic practices. In addition, you will receive a weekly newsletter from Collingwood Neighbourhood House in collaboration with Fresh Roots that includes a fresh-sheet of what veggies will be in your box, a recipe and some tips and tricks for eating and storing your rad veggies.
Not interested in joining but still want to support a low-income neighbour to access fresh foods? You can make a donation to the program. 100% of these funds will go towards subsidizing a CSA for a neighbour in Renfrew Collingwood. Collingwood Corner: The old Joyce bus loop by Loretta Houben Before the Joyce-Collingwood Skytrain station was built in the mid 1980s, the residents of Collingwood headed to the southeast corner of Joyce and Kingsway to catch the array of busses heading to downtown Vancouver, into Burnaby or down Joyce to Rupert Street. The loop was located behind the gas station and the 7/11 store. It was never located right at the corner, as some false claims declare.

The proof is in the pudding! A few years ago (RCC News, April 2019), I wrote about the Home Gas station; Carleton Super Save, on that same corner in the 1930s. According to BC Directories, Vancou1970s Joyce Loop. Photo by D. Cooke ver Motors LTD station was built in 1930, then from 1931 until 1940, the Carleton Super Save was at 3304 Kingsway. From 1951 to 1954, Gomer Motors took over. Until 1955 Joyce and Kingsway Service Station was there. Econo station was in this location 1952 Joyce Loop. Photo by Ted Clark Fonds, Richmond Archives according to the 1974 photo included with this article. Loretta Houben is a long-time resident of Collingwood and contributor to the Another strong proof is photos. Ted Clark was a photographer deeply interested in the B.C. Electric Railway trams and the early bus systems in Vancouver. He took hundreds of photos that can be found in the Richmond Archives online, including the Joyce Loop. I find these photos fascinating, as I remember running to catch the #19 Stanley Park bus at 7:45 am each weekday. It left the loop every 10 or 15 minutes daily, turned onto Joyce and then left down Kingsway, heading all the way downtown. It stopped near Hastings and Granville where I exited to work at the United Kingdom building as a credit clerk in the late 1970s. When the Skytrain was built and began operating in 1986, the bus loop was moved to the Joyce Station at Joyce and Vanness on the west side. A new bus loop opened in August 2018 on the east side. The old bus loop property on Joyce was sold, and offices and stores were built there. Do you have memories or photos of this bus loop? We’d love to hear about them. Email rccnews-editorial@cnh.bc.ca

Please consider taking a few minutes to share your feedback about buying products and services, which will help inform potential improvements to B.C.’s consumer protection laws. 2887 East 12th Avenue and Renfrew 604-423-4995 m.facebook.com/gongcharenfrew/ Delivers on UberEats and DoorDash Gong Cha, the bubble tea chain, originated from Taiwan back in 2006 and has become a globally known chain since then, according to their website. There are many locations across Canada and the Lower Mainland, including one in our very own Renfrew-Collingwood, near the Renfrew SkyTrain station. Our branch recently acquired a new ice cream machine, and their team was gracious enough to invite several foodies to try out their new flavours. There are four flavours in total: matcha, Earl Grey milk tea, oreo and vanilla – but only two flavours are offered per day. I got to try matcha and Earl Grey milk tea, both delicious but catered to different palettes. My preference would be the matcha ice cream as it reminded me of a matcha mochi ice cream I’d eat as a child and used to be sold at T&T supermarket. That nostalgic feeling paired with their delicious bubble waffle definitely puts them near the top of my list of bubble tea chains I’d visit again, especially in the summer. My fellow foodie friends thought the matcha ice cream was quite sweet and preferred the Earl Grey. It had a well-rounded flavour and I would definitely recommend it to all the tea lovers out there.
Original egg wafflewith matcha ice cream combo, original egg waffle with Earl Grey milk tea ice The brown sugar oolong milk tea cream combo. is served both hot and cold, both equally tasty depending on how you are feeling in the day. I usually order cold bubble tea in the summer and hot bubble tea in the winter, which can be comparable to ordering steeped tea from Tim Hortons or milk teas at Hong Kong cafes. Gong Cha chains typically make drinks that are on the sweeter side and I tend to request 30% to 50% sugar instead of their regular sweetness. The next time I visit Gong Cha Renfrew, I would be interested in trying their flavoured bubble waffles because I only had the original one during this visit.

CELEBRATING FATHERS by Sophia Han
Read On!
Happy Father’s Day, June 19
has a web page. You can: Read the articles
Father’s Day is an occasion to celebrate the father figures in our lives. These people might be fathers, stepfathers, grandparents, fathers-in-law, uncles, older brothers and family friends.
http://renfrewcollingwood communitynews.com/category/ read-on/
Being a father often means giving advice. Some examples of “fatherly advice” are “Put your best foot forward” or “A penny saved is a penny earned.” These sayings have been around for hundreds of years and are still used today.

In Canada and the United States, the tradition of celebrating fathers in June has been around since the early 1900s, when many families honoured the fathers killed in World War I. However, Father’s Day did not become an official holiday in either country until the 1970s. In Spain, Italy and other Roman Catholic countries, fathers are celebrated on St. Joseph’s Feast Day in March. Interestingly, Taiwan celebrates Father’s Day in August. This is because the date (the 8th day of the 8th month, or “ba-ba”) sounds like the Mandarin word for “father.”

Canadians celebrate Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June. It is not a public holiday, but many families take the opportunity to spend quality time together. Some popular options include brunch, dinner or outdoor activities like hiking or golfing. Whatever the activity, the important thing is to show appreciation for the people who raise us.
