Adult education time machine: Witnessing adult education in the photos of the City of Vancouver Archives by John Mendoza
Originally written as an assignment for the University of BC, local resident and writer John Mendoza looks at the history of adult education in Vancouver and uncovers some East Vancouver connections. My assignment for a course in adult education at the University of British Columbia was to find photos that speak of adult education in a historical and contemporary setting. In finding photos, I wanted this challenge shaped by the desire to find something in the local community. What would be in the City of Vancouver’s Archives that could articulate something about adult education? It was not an easy task to sift through numerous historical images, but slowly, four photos emerged. Of those four photos, two photos had definite links to the east side of Vancouver, specifically the Pacific National Exhibition.
Above: Ladies at driving education display in PNE B.C. building, 1954, photographer unknown, City of Vancouver Archives website Right: Crowd watching Kwakiutl (Kwakwaka’wakw) carver Ellen Neel working on a totem pole, 1953, photographer unknown, City of Vancouver Archives website
Of the four photos, the two photos of adult learning opportunities captured after 1950 may seem unremarkable, but upon closer examination, reveal something far more complex. Both photos were created in the 1950s with only a one-year difference between them, and the name of the photographer is unknown. Both photos were taken at the Pacific National Exhibition, affectionately known as the PNE. The PNE is an annual agricultural fair hosted at the Hastings Park site in East Vancouver, drawing both a rural audience from Continued on page 2

rural British Columbia and beyond, and an urban audience from the Lower Mainland. However, both photographic images forward the definitions of what adult education could be. Both photos from the 1950s feature Man and woman painting signs, likely attending School educational Board Night Classes, circa 1937. Photograph by Stuart Thompson displays, (1881-1960), City of Vancouver Archives website where fairgoers could interact with the content any way they want. Also significant was the use of an agricultural fair as a place where learning could take place, transforming a popular attraction into “an agency of progress.” The driving display photo from 1954 was certainly timely; the end of the Second World War had ushered not only an emerging automobile culture, but also expanding opportunities for women. Most fascinating is the 1953 photo featuring Kwakwaka’wakw (Kwakiutl) artist Ellen Neel, the first female totem pole carver from the Northwest Coast. Here we have a woman from a First Nations background demonstrating a centuries old skill (once largely Men in Headphones Learning Technical Skills, circa 1937. Photograph by Stuart Thompson (1881-1960), City of Vancouver Archives dominated by website male artists) in front of a diverse audience. Both these photos from the 1950s show that learning could occur anywhere, even in a humble agricultural exhibition setting. The photos do not offer a complete chronicle of Vancouver’s adult education history – certain stories and diverse communities are missing in its representation. But the few photos do offer a modern path of an adult education culture pushing through the walls of the formal classroom and out into the larger community.

Sushi Taku
4902 Joyce St Tel: (604) 454-1023
Greetings food fans. Again, I want to tell you about a relatively new little addition to our gem-encrusted crown of culinary wonder that is our community. Let’s have a warm welcome for owner Jason Kim and the staff of Sushi Taku. Sushi Taku is located just a block north of Joyce Skytrain, on Joyce, at the corner of Wellington. You may remember this location as the former Thai Escape. Jason has done a really nice job on the renovations and putting the Sushi Taku stamp on the place. With an extensive Japanese menu featuring all of your favourites: tempura, teriyaki (beef, salmon, chicken, seafood), nigiri sushi (available in black rice also); sashimi, donburi (on a bed of rice); udon and yaki soba noodles; maki sushi (a long list); special rolls, a variety of sushi and sashimi combos; four types of bento boxes and three types of party trays. On this occasion, my accomplice and I ordered Taku Tray B (pictured above). This was 43 pieces of delicious rolls: California, dynamite, yam, chopped scallop, Alaska and sunny. Mmmm. With our pick-up discount, it came to just around $27. The two of us were left well stuffed with plenty left over. So, let’s do the math. This meal would rate extremely high on the Gourmet/Gourmand Scale of Goodness. Not only do you get stuffed for McDonald’s like prices, we are talking supremely delicious and healthy as well. So healthy in fact, that Sushi Taku was approached by Graham Bruce school to be the suppliers to their monthly sushi day. Every month, Jason and his staff feed around 100 kids with their delicious, healthy and affordable sushi. Nice. All I ever got in elementary school was a hot dog. Another affordable and The bento box at well-balanced healthy meal Sushi Taku on Sushi Taku’s menu is their bento boxes. There are four options, all hovering around the $10 mark. Each comes with five items and miso soup. Some come with rolls, some with sushi, some with beef or chicken teriyaki and rice, or sashimi, and each bento box includes salad, fruit, miso soup and crispy prawn and vegetable tempura. There is also a vegi option. Bento boxes are a great option for dinner or lunch as you get a full meal with lots of variety. “They have been designed to feed a full-grown man well,” says Jason. Among the special rolls offered at Taku Sushi, one will find the Collingwood Roll. Alright! This combines a dynamite roll with seared tuna and crunchy yam on top. Yes, Collingwood now has an official roll. One will also find some other custom made rolls by Jason and his crew such as the Pokemon Roll, which is double the size, and the Sushi Pizza Roll. Mmm. So many rolls; so little time. Sushi Taku opened six months ago on August 25th. This is Jason’s first restaurant of his own. He has been in the restaurant business for 15 years, starting as dishwasher and server. He then acted as chef and manager for his family’s business, Yanaki Sushi in West Vancouver. Jason is now bringing the experience, consistency, affordability and deliciousness of Yanaki’s to us here in Collingwood – via Sushi Taku. Go try Sushi Taku. Tell them Paul sent you. Bon appetit.

Venture beyond North American fiction for rewarding reading experiences that will have you looking further afield more often. Booklist by Taya Lawton, Renfrew Branch Library
Japan: 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami Two lonely 10 year olds, a boy and a girl, Tengo and Aomame, hold hands in an empty classroom, and for the next 20 years they dream of the other. Then 30-year-old Aomame finds herself in another world, which she calls 1Q84 , a world overseen by two moons and ruled by the quixotic “little people.” Meanwhile, Tengo has rewritten a novel by an enigmatic teenage girl that accurately describes the world of 1Q84. As their lives swirl closer together, Murakami draws the reader deeper into this baffling universe. The tension builds as we root for Tengo and Aomame to find one another and hold hands again.
China: The Last Lover by Can Xue In a fictional Western nation, husbands, wives and lovers are entwined in complicated, tortuous relationships as they step in and out of each other’s fantasies and explore the deepest realms of human desire. Layered in symbolism, the majority of the book is spent in an “unusually intense, hallucinatory state.” By threading the fable with image patterns, Xue stitches themes together and succeeds in creating an immersive tale of “intersecting dreamworlds.” Readers committed to experimental and innovative fiction will be snared by this mental journey. Ukraine: Penguin Lost by Andrey Kurkov Penguin Lost finds Viktor Zolotaryov sneaking back into Kiev under an assumed identity to undertake a dangerous mission: He wants to find Misha, his penguin, whom he fears has fallen into the hands of the criminal mob looking for Viktor himself. Viktor falls in with a Mafia boss who employs him in an election-rigging campaign in return for introducing Viktor to other mobsters who can help him find Misha. And as Viktor tries to survive in Kiev’s criminal underground, the evidence mounts that Misha may be someplace even worse: the zoo of a Chechen warlord. Mexico; Signs Preceding the End of the World by Yuri Herrera Makina is a young woman tasked to deliver an envelope to her brother, who crossed over into the U.S. from Mexico three years earlier. The story opens with a man, a car and a dog swallowed up by a sinkhole, a product of over-mining the land for silver. Her journey is presented like a fable: she first connects with three “top dogs” to help transport her, and one of them gives her an additional package to deliver as part of the deal. The nine short chapters tell a straightforward quest story, and Herrera plants dangerous criminals and vigilant border patrollers around every corner. But it’s the imagery, by turns moving and nightmarish, that makes this brief book memorable.

Nigeria: The Fishermen by Chigozie Obioma Told from the point of view of nine-year-old Benjamin, the youngest of four brothers, The Fishermen is the Cain and Abel-esque story of an unforgettable childhood in 1990s Nigeria. When their father has to travel to a distant city for work, the brothers skip school and go fishing. At the forbidden river, they encounter a madman who predicts that one of the brothers will kill another. What happens next is a mythic event whose impact is both tragic and redemptive. Obioma excels at juxtaposing sharp observation, rich images of the natural world, and motifs from biblical and tribal lore.

Art on display at Champlain Heights Penny Lim, a Vancouver-born artist, has four oil and seven acrylic paintings on display through March at Lupii Cafe, 7743 Champlain Crescent. The vegetarian community-minded cafe serves a $5 buffet, Monday to Friday from 10 am to 3 pm and Saturday and Sunday 11 am to- 4 pm. Penny Lim believes that fine arts combine all aspects of living: nature, travel, history, culture, society, past, present and a vision for a future. She loved to draw in elementary school and she continues to love drawing on paper with a pencil. On European working holiday, Penny Lim was inspired by children’s storybook illustrations while doing research to decorate a preschool. She enrolled in art classes in Nuernberg, Germany, and upon returning to Vancouver, studied art at Capilano College and Emily Carr College. Because she was timid using sculpture electric tools, she chose printmaking as my major. She spent a final post-grad year in Hangzhou, China, combined with the quest to see her Toishan, Cantonese heritage roots.

Avocado, Roasted Squash and Black Bean Tacos Makes 4 servings. Recipe by Avocados from Mexico 1 Butternut squash (approx. 1.3kg/ 2.9lb) 1 2 tbsp Olive oil 30 mL ¼ tsp Salt 1 mL ¼ tsp Fresh ground pepper 1 mL 2 tsp Sumac (or paprika) 10 mL ½ tbsp Olive oil 7 mL 1 Garlic clove, finely minced 1 1 Can (540 mL) black beans, rinsed & drained 1 tsp Ground cumin 5 mL ½ tsp Chili powder 2 mL ½ tsp Salt 2 mL 8-10 Corn tortillas 8-10 1 Avocado, diced 1 ½ cup Feta cheese, crumbled 125 mL Fresh cilantro, hot sauce and lime quarters, to serve Recipe tip: For seasonal ingredients, such as butternut squash, be creative and substitute it with other starchy vegetables like yams, which are available all year round. Step 1 Preheat the oven to 425°F. Peel the squash and cut it in two. Remove the seeds and stringy fibres, and dice the squash.
Step 2 Arrange the squash pieces on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Drizzle with olive oil, add salt and pepper, and sprinkle with sumac or paprika. Roast for 25 minutes. Step 3 In a small saucepan, sauté ½ tbsp olive oil and the minced garlic over low to medium heat. Add the black beans, ground cumin, chili powder, salt and ¼ cup of water. Bring to a boil. Cover and reduce heat to low. Simmer for approximately 5 minutes or until the beans are well heated and soft (but not dry). Step 4 In a hot pan, heat the tortillas for a few minutes, or microwave them for 20 seconds. Cover with a clean cloth to prevent them from drying out. Step 5 Top the tortillas with roasted squash, black beans, avocado and feta. Serve with fresh cilantro, hot sauce and lime quarters. The Seniors Connection The Good Neighbours
Cnh seniors
by Robert F. Edwards I would like to share what happened to my good wife on February 5, 2017, a very snowy day in Collingwood. Due to poor health I am unable to remove snow from our driveway or the sidewalks. My dear wife went out and started to shovel the snow. Shortly thereafter one of our neighbours came across the street with his shovel and started to help. No sooner had she welcomed the additional help than another neighbour two doors down joined her and the other gentleman in helping remove the snow. This is only part of the story, for both these neighbours are new immigrants from Asia. When we talk about Canadian values, as Canadians we are thinking of treating others as good neighbours or helping others. I can only think of these two men that are new Canadians are demonstrating what all Canadians should be, “a good neighbour.” This Good Neighbour policy that my new neighbours did today was also done many years ago. Back in the early 1950s when I was just a
MONDAY FUN DAY! very young boy and my mother was a war widow, the women in my neighbourhood would say to their husbands, “go over and help Phyllis.” That was my mother’s name and we lived in a small house in an average neighbourhood. The men would come over to the house and volunteer to help put the garden in, or if it was winter they would come over and remove the snow from the sidewalks. Here it is over 65 years ago and the Canadian values are the same – help your neighbour. When we talk about new Canadians, whether they are immigrants or refugees, they seem to adapt spontaneously to the Canadian values so much. I think as Canadians newly arrived or born here, we have the right to respect and want to help each other. I’m proud to be in this neighbourhood with my new Asian friends. Robert F. Edwards is a long-time Collingwood resident and contributor to the RCC News.

Three Links seeks volunteers with pets to visit seniors by Liz Kendler
Do you have a guinea pig who loves people? Or a gecko, parrot, bunny, cat or dog? (No tarantulas need apply!) Three Links Care Centre would love to have you and your pet bring joy to our animal-loving senior residents through weekly visits. Three Links has been caring for seniors in the Renfrew-Collingwood neighbourhood for 35 years. They provide adaptable, inclusive and exceptional continuum of care services that meet the diverse
physical, emotional and cultural needs of aging people and their families. A team of 100 volunteers helps keep their residents connected to their community. There are two resident cats on site, so your people-loving pet must also be a cat-loving pet. Pet therapy volunteers visit one-on-one or with groups of seniors for one hour each week. They get to know residents and facilitate a positive experience with their pet.

Collingwood Branch #48 Final Update
by Paul Reid
We did it! Mission accomplished. For those of you have been following the saga of Collingwood Branch #48 over these past two years, you will know that it was virtually game over for our local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. That is until the RCC News uncovered the story. This then lead to an outpouring of community support which gave Branch #48 a new hope at survival. The Branch was given a second chance by BC/Yukon Command and would hobble along on “probation” for the next year and a half - low on members, energy, and without a home. That was until last fall when our comrades at Grandview Branch #179 invited Branch #48 to amalgamate that is, to become one branch. And there we have it. On April 22, consider yourself invited to the Amalgamation Celebration of Branches #48 and #179 into the new branch: RCL Branch #179 Grandview-Collingwood. Details to right.
Left: Branch 48 Lives on. This was the cake from the final branch meeting on January 29. Lest we forget. Above: The cheque for $541,039.73 that was deposited into the account of the new Grandview-Collingwood Join in the Amalgamation Celebration on Saturday, April 22nd, #179. This was Branch #48’s funds, accumulated from at 2205 Commercial Drive (6th and Commercial) over 90 years, that will now stay in the community.

There will also be a 900-square-foot, commercialgrade kitchen, an approximately 700-square-foot multipurpose arts room, a children’s room, office space, a staff break room, and 51 parking spaces. The annex will be located on the main floor of a new condominium tower being built on Vanness Avenue between Boundary Road and Ormidale Street. would also work well for art classes or use by local artists. Some of the Renfrew-Collingwood Food Security Institute’s cooking programs may be run out of the new kitchen. It may also be rented out to community members who want to start a small food business, which requires the use of a commercial kitchen. The children’s room will be used for childminding while parents are participating in the annex’s programs and services. It could also be used as a licensed preschool facility or for yoga classes. Most of the spaces in the annex will also be available for rentals, such as events or parties. After the annex opens, CNH’s Joyce Street building will remain as CNH’s main site. Programs, services and initiatives will run out of both sites. To follow the progress of CNH’s annex, community members can visit the ‘CNH Annex Blog’ at http:// www.cnh.bc.ca/cnhs-new-annex/cnh-annex-blogs/ Those with questions or who are interested in finding out how they can support CNH in completing the annex may contact CNH Executive Director Jennifer Gray-Grant at jgray-grant@cnh.bc.ca.

Hardeep Sidhu says “thank
you to all of my lovely customers who have supported me these past 10 years.”
With Maya’s Hair and Skincare recently celebrating their 10-year anniversary here in Collingwood, owneroperator Hardeep Sidhu is living the dream of having her own successful hair and beauty salon. Hardeep loves her work. “I love each day, meeting all sorts of customers and getting to know them as I help them to look and feel their best.” This enthusiasm, along with the exceptional skills of her staff and herself, is what keeps the clients of Maya’s Hair and Skincare coming back again and again. “Our clientele has been growing steadily through word of mouth, and I know have customers coming from as far away as Coquitlam, Surrey, Richmond; even White Rock! Maya’s Hair and Skincare is your one-stop shop for all of your hair and beauty needs: Haircuts, colour, highlights, perms, nails, threading, waxing, facials, manicures and pedicures. Getting married? Maya’s is the place to come for that incredible bridal updo. Or how about a French manicure and paraffin treatment? Maya’s Hair and Skincare is your place to pamper yourself. You’ll be in good hands as Hardeep keeps her and her staff up-to-date on all of the latest
in hair and esthetics. They also attend and compete in many hair and beauty shows. Originally from Garhshankar, India, Hardeep came to Canada in 1999. She has been married for 20 years now: her secret to a long happy marriage: “give and take.” Together Hardeep and Surinder have two sons and one daughter aged 8, 14 and 15 that keep them busy. Living right nearby to her shop, Hardeep can walk or bike to work and Surinder coaches the kids in both soccer and basketball at our local Killarney high school. When not busy at work, Hardeep tries to make ample time for her kids. She also loves to cook with a keen eye for presentation. “If I wasn’t busy in the hair and beauty industry I think I may have opened a restaurant.” Hardeep is also passionate about giving back to her community back in India. Her focus has been on school supplies to help kids with their education. In addition to money, she sends over pens, pencils, books and, recently, school uniforms for 18 children. Way to go Hardeep! A final thought from Hardeep: “I want to say thank you to all of my lovely customers who have supported me these past 10 years.”
