Small is beautiful! Neighbourhood Small Grants projects are back for another year

The purpose of the unique Neighbourhood Small Grants program is to help build community and strengthen connections right where people live.

Use your imagination and come up with an idea that you think would improve your neighbourhood in a fun and friendly way.

Apply for a $50 to $500 grant to help fund your idea, meet new neighbours, learn more about each other and do something fun and interesting together.

It’s easy to apply. Just use the online application form (www. neighbourhoodsmallgrants.ca) to tell us what you want to do to enhance your neighbourhood socially, physically or culturally.

Projects that were approved last year include neighbourhood clean-ups, vegetarian cooking classes, organic garden planting, knitting clubs, bicycle repair workshop, block parties, cultural celebrations, birdhouse-making projects, neighbours breakfast social and outdoor movie night. Sounds like fun, right?

This year our themes are (1) intergenerational fun, (2) Indigenous acknowledgement and learnings and (3) multicultural activities.

A resident advisory committee reviews applications and then decides which ones will receive funding. Please visit the website to learn about application guidelines.

Free bike repair day in Joyce-Collingwood August 2017 on a Friday afternoon, there they were! Braving the heat wave that day, folks lined up to talk to workshop hosts Dickson and Jackie, who joined forces with two super-talented mechanics from Our Community Bikes, a responsible, locally minded bike shop in East Vancouver.

These bike enthusiasts listened to various bicycle issues and taught their neighbours some simple repairs like patching flat tubes, adjusting brakes and gears, and lubricating chains!

Dickson and Jackie, who are neighbours, applied for a Neighbourhood Small Grant last March. When their application was approved they went to work on their plan: to teach, do repairs and meet friendly folks in the neighbourhood! They brought their own tools, skills and knowledge.

The grant funds were used to purchase the bike repair necessities as well as provide yummy snacks for those lining up. They were able to send folks away with a small flat

repair kit and safety front and rear flashing lights, also purchased with grant funds. Sweet!

This workshop was very enthusiastically received by neighbours. Due to the overwhelmingly positive response feedback Jackie and Dickson are hoping to hold another event.

They express their thanks to Neighbourhood Small Grants for supporting their project, and giving them the experience of holding it has really encouraged them to try and make it a recurring event.

Deadline April 9, 2018 Neighbourhood Small Grants support people who want to make their communities better places to live. We even have Greenest City Neighbourhood Small Grants to support projects that focus on making neighbourhoods greener.

We give grants from $50 to $500 to projects that focus on building and strengthening relationships between neighbours. Projects range from clothing swaps to multicultural cooking classes.

Greenest City Neighbourhood Small Grants can include anything from community gardens to waste reduction workshops.

The light shines on

by Akberet Beyene to watch TV way past midnight and before going to bed she had the habit of walking to her computer room to see the photos of her siblings, children and her big blessed family. Then the light would go dark and she would go to bed.

When Cathy’s living room light went off I knew that it was late for me as well, and I hurried into bed.

To commemorate the 20-year anniversary of the Renfrew-Collingwood Community News, we’re revisiting past stories that have particularly inspired us.

At the RCC News, we believe that every voice matters. Over the years, it has been a privilege to publish your stories. Your stories don’t have to be perfectly written, they just have to be heartfelt.

This story from the November 2015 issue of the RCC News is especially heartfelt. It is about love, family and belonging, and it brings tears to my eyes every time I read it. We first read about the special relationship here in the December 2012 issue, “Newcomer finds family through Renfrew-Collingwood seniors program.”

It’s been a little more than a year since Cathy Folkard, the Queen of Malta Place, left us for her final journey. It was on October 16th, 2014. On this first anniversary of her passing I find myself walking in sweet memories of our many Thursdays together.

Cathy was very proud and even in her old age she always tried to take care of herself without bothering anyone. She was extremely organized: every week there were plans, marked in her calendar. She looked forward to the days she would spend with her group at the senior’s centre, playing bingo and doing other activities. I remember the days when she joyfully reported that she had won a game.

Cathy was one of the first women that I met through the Better at Home seniors program at Collingwood Neighbourhood House. Her light was more than just a light for me, it almost had a spiritual meaning, like a beacon in the night, which had led me to a safe place.

Whenever I walk by Cathy’s home or look outside towards her old home, I still look for the light in her window, and I miss it so much.

This past year our neighbourhood has been very different without Cathy. I miss seeing the familiar cars of her family, always dropping by to visit regardless of snow, rain or heat. She was never left alone. Cathy had a long and happy life.

I have a picture of Cathy in my kitchen.

In it she has that big wonderful smile, so contagious that I smile back automatically, without thinking, every time I see it.

I want her to know how loved she was and is – by so many. And I want to thank her for her beloved family, who continue to care for me like she did. I feel so blessed and proud to be part of this family.

We miss Cathy each and every day; she is always with us and in our hearts, be it when visiting with Marnie or gathering for happy times. I can always hear her voice and how she said the words, “Bye love,” when it was time to part.

I will never forget Cathy, the Queen of Malta Place.

Rest in peace Cathy Bella. Bye love.

by Crecien Bencio Collingwood Neighbourhood House (CNH), in collaboration with many other neighbourhood partners in Renfrew-Collingwood (RC), has been focused on connecting community members for more than 20 years, particularly among individuals and groups who are isolated.

More recently, CNH and neighbourhood partners have explored the question of “how might we increase resilience, connectedness and belonging in a neighbourhood with growing diversity and increasing densification?”

Throughout 2017 and 2018, neighbourhood partners are participating in the Connections and Resilience Lab to explore this question. The Connections and Resilience Lab is a place where City of Vancouver staff, neighbours and neighbourhood partners can respond to some of the most complex social challenges that RC is facing by collaborating and deeply understanding complex challenges from the points of view of the people most affected by them. The lab is also a place to test innovative responses to create solutions and learning.

In January 2018, lab participants developed three convening questions to address how to increase resilience, connectedness and belonging in RC. 1. Leadership + Neighbours Helping Neighbours: How might we identify and create leadership opportunities for neighbours so that they can reach out and help other neighbours in the community?

2. Systems Tools: How might we make our systems (development permit processes, funding, economic and political systems) more inclusive of the neighbourhood values and The Connections and Resilience Lab in action. connections?

Local youth Maggie Fong wins City of Vancouver Awards of Excellence by Crecien Bencio Collingwood Neighbourhood House, the Renfrew-Collingwood Food Security Institute, Still Moon Arts Society and Windermere Secondary School congratulate Maggie Wong for winning the 2018 City of Vancouver Awards of Excellence in Greenest City Leadership – Youth category for her volunteer work in food justice, food security and environmentalism in Renfrew-Collingwood.

“Growing up in a lower-income family, my parents always taught me to be grateful and to give what I can,” Maggie Fong says. “With these values, I developed a strong passion for volunteering at a young age.”

When Maggie learned more about climate change and food security in Grade 8, she wanted to create change but at first didn’t know where to start. She decided to start in her comfort zone of volunteering by working daily in her school’s organic garden.

“I quickly fell in love with growing and providing sustainable food in and for the community,” she says. “Through gardening, I was able to meet amazing people and share my passion for food and the environment through various opportunities.

“With a group of youth at the Renfrew Collingwood Food Security Institute at Collingwood Neighbourhood House, I hosted panels from 2014 to 2017 at the BC Food Systems Network Gathering, aimed towards including youth in the food movement. We published a book together called Renfrew-Collingwood Food Stories, which I later presented at the 2017 Vancouver Food Summit. Despite the nerves I felt, it also felt very humbling. It amazed me where my passion for volunteering and the garden has led me. I joined the Co-op club at my school after wanting to learn for about sustainability in economics, and together we created a business plan

Soon, there will be no more looking out the window every morning to see what kind of day it will be. It could be cold and dark – as it has been for the past three months. Or it might turn sunny, tantalizing you with a hint that better, drier, warmer weather is coming. Mother nature has trouble making up her mind early in this month.

So you can be fooled. In early March, it could be just like February – cold and wet and dark when you wake up, and then later warmer and hinting at better weather to come. But on March 20, that will start to go away.

But that’s not likely.

Every day for the next three months it will begin to get warmer and brighter in the Northern Hemisphere, in which Vancouver is situated.The sun will rise a few minutes earlier every day and and fall into night a little later. Plants will sprout, winds will soften.

In Renfrew-Collingwood it might be a little different than in the rest of B.C. because we are in Vancouver, which is next to the Pacific Ocean. Our spring usually comes a bit earlier than the March 20 date because our coastal climate means the ocean has a strong influence over our weather.

On the coast, in early March we can be swathed in raincoat and boots and warm hats for a few days and then suddenly it’s spring. The coats and umbrellas are thrown off, the joggers are out in only shorts and light shirts, the flowers start popping their heads out of the ground and the birds are singing.

We’re lucky that way. In much of Canada, winter still holds everyone in its grip for a few more weeks. East of Vancouver and in eastern B.C., Canadians still shudder through the worst of that season. The Prairie provinces often have to endure bitter cold, although it can be broken in Alberta by the odd warm current that wends like a train through the Rocky Mountains; the Great Lakes area is still shuddering in a deep freeze; in Quebec, the song “Mon pays ce n’est pas un pays, c’est l’hiver” (My country is not a country, it is winter) is still true; and in Easterrn Canada’s Maritime provinces, howling winds from the Atlantic Ocean have most people still wearing winter gear.

Spring, by the way, isn’t only enjoyed by current residents of the West Coast. Its gradual delivery of delight from misery has been known for centuries by First Nations who lived here in closer harmony with nature. They learned long ago how to cope with the changing nature of early spring, venturing out of their dwellings when the light and warmth arrived and then retreatring back to their warming fires when the cold and dark and rain made a return engagement.

But today, we live in cities, in artificial environments fueled by electricity, and so are often removed from the full effects of nature. As a result, we

aren’t able to change our feeling so easily.

Local MLA addresses resident concerns about homeless housing February 25, 2018, our local MLA and B.C. Minister of Health Adrian Dix met with a group of residents to discuss the temporary modular housing for people experiencing homelessness that is proposed for 4410 Kaslo Street across from the 29th Avenue SkyTrain station. Adrian Dix listened intently to resident concerns and suggested a few next steps to take.

Late February or early March, the city’s director of planning will determine whether a development permit will be issued. Once approved, it takes about three months for construction to be completed. Spring tips to get your lawn and garden going The long-awaited end to winter is finally upon us and with it comes a fresh start for your lawn and garden. Whether you loved your garden and lawn last year or would rather forget that aspect of 2017, spring is the ideal time to set yourself up for a successful green season.

While the warming weather might seem like enough to get your lawn and garden going, there are a handful of things you can do to set yourself up for a satisfying year in your own personal greenspace.

1. Topdress your lawn and garden Topdressing is the act of adding fresh (preferably richly composted) soil to both your lawn and garden.

The best part of topdressing is how easy it is to do.

For your lawn, simply apply a thin, roughly half-inch layer evenly on top of your grass. Once applied, simply let it slowly consolidate into the existing soil layer. It may be visually jarring when you first see your nice green lawn coated in composted soil, but fear not, the new soil will integrate itself into the existing material in a matter of weeks, and your lawn will thank you for it.

In your garden, apply the fresh soil by digging down four to six inches into your existing garden bed and blend your old soil with the new, composted material.

For both the lawn and garden, the topsoil will give a much-needed nutrient boost after the long winter.

long-term gain,” aerating your lawn will do wonders for your grass later in the season.

While there are a number of techniques for aerating a lawn, the basic premise is the same: puncturing holes in the ground in order to improve circulation amongst the roots. By breaking up the ground, these holes allow nutrients from both the air and from moisture to penetrate your lawn with more ease.

The most common machine used for this procedure is an aerator, which resembles a snowblower but instead of spitting snow, pulls out four-to-six-inch plugs of lawn and leaves them behind. If you don’t want to rent an aerator, or are looking for a new workout fad, pitchforks have been known to work as well, though at a much less efficient pace.

If you are planning on topdressing your lawn as well, make sure to aerate first before laying on the topsoil layer. The aeration will allow for quicker and easier absorption of the new soil.

3. Plant new or transplant Although Vancouver has the reputation as a wet city, the rainfall that we receive in the non-winter months is actually significantly less than your garden needs.

That is why the spring is ideal for both planting new items as well as transplanting existing ones to another spot in your garden. Once the summer rolls around, keeping the ground moist enough for a freshly installed plant to thrive is very tough, so take advantage of still-wet conditions before it’s too late.

When it comes to transplanting, always make sure to fill the new hole fully with water and then let it drain before putting the plant in the ground. This will ensure that the roots will remain hydrated while they are disturbed and at their most vulnerable. Continued watering after a transplant is also key to ensure a smooth transition.

Lawn and garden tips for healthy streams When urban development covers the land with buildings, concrete and asphalt, less rain soaks into the soil. The water stays on the surface and runs off quickly into streams, ditches and storm drains, which also empty into streams. The result is “urban runoff.”

1. Instead of week killers and other pesticides, consider hand-pulling weeds and using insecticidal soap.

2. Encourage insect-eating birds and friendly insects. Useful insects are spiders, ladybugs and lacewings that eat pest insects. Attract birds with tree cover, food during the winter and protection from cats.

3. Dispose of unused paint and chemicals correctly. Never dump into household toilets and sinks or outside ditches, storm drains or streams.

Neighbourhood residents gather to learn more about the new CNH Annex

Neighbourhood residents recently gathered at an Annex Community Information Session to learn more about CNH’s new Annex, which is being built on Vanness Ave., just a short walk from the Joyce-Collingwood SkyTrain station (see map).

At the Information Session, Community Annex Coordinator Emily Chan presented an overview of the site and each room’s amenities, a timeline for completion and opening of the Annex, and an explanation of the commu- studio time, and cultural activities. The Annex will have a 900-square-foot commercialgrade kitchen. The Annex will include an approximately 2,700-squarefoot multipurpose space with a sprung floor (like in a gymnasium or dance studio). This could be used to host dance classes, large events, and performances.

Collingwood Neighbourhood House invites you to lunch every Tuesday and Thursday. Full meal prices are $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, $5 for students and $3.25 for children under 12. Items can be purchased a la carte or “to go.”

The Annex is being constructed to provide more multipurpose space for the neighbourhood’s growing population. When the Annex opens, CNH’s main location on Joyce Street will remain open and programs will be run out of both locations.

There were many opportunities for participants to share their thoughts and feedback, including an exercise in which people looked at priorities for the Annex and were able to vote for their favourites and add comments.

People were very interested in the space as an arts and culture hub and had lots of questions about what kinds of arts and cultural activities will be offered.

COMMUNITY LUNCH

There will be a children’s room with a play space, seating area, small kitchen and a washroom. The children’s room could be used for child-minding of children whose parents are attending Annex programs. The space could also be rented out for children’s birthday parties.

The Annex will include a shared office space and a couple of enclosed offices, a staff break room, and fifty-one parking spaces. As well, there will be an outside plaza that could be used for programming or community engagement.
