Festival week Monday, May 20 to Saturday, May 25, 2019 by Andrea Berneckas Collingwood Days 2019 celebrates healthy and vibrant communities, in the various ways we define health and well-being. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, healthy is defined as being “beneficial to one’s physical, mental, or emotional state: conducive to or associated with good health or reduced risk of disease; prosperous, flourishing. Vibrant is defined as “pulsating with life, vigor, or activity.” We often see health in the narrow context of our access to medical services, exercise and nutritious food. But when we think about what we need to flourish, we have to look beyond to the things that give us sustenance and joy in our everyday lives.

Not Your Average Book Club by Cecilia Federizon The Renfrew-Collingwood Arts Council has launched a series called Not Your Average Book Club, where participants focus less on books and more on people. The series is lead by the creative mind Kirsten Mendonca, a member of the Renfrew-Collingwood Arts Council. At one of the arts council meetings, they were brainstorming about events that the community requested, and among them was a book club. Never having run one before, Kirsten thought it would be a good challenge and researched online what book clubs usually look like. She got the sense that the book clubs were more about people connecting with each other – the focus was less on the books and more about relationships. Because media itself is ever changing, she thought that having a book club that allows for discussions about more than just books would be an interesting event since it would also be more accessible for folks who don’t have the resources to access literature. So why not have a book club that focuses on the variety of media,Ad-V2 and instead Il Museo Ruth Collingwood 14/03/19bring Page 1 everyone together though a theme. The
The first of the book series was held on March 24 where Looking Beyond Black History Month was discussed. Photo by Claire Barrat themes were chosen to reflect the people in the neighbourhood and our community interests. Since many current and past events around Collingwood are equity based, the themes that will be discussed are: The First Place I Ever Lived; To Queer Things Up; Unsettling Canada Day; Breaking Bread Together; and Let’s Talk About Mental Health.

The first of the series held on Sunday, March 24 was entitled Looking Beyond Black History Month. We discussed the concept of Black History Month and how to incorporate Black history and Black lives daily, rather than encapsulating it all in one month. Out of this theme we discussed topics like sharing the workload of education with allies rather than it being on the shoulders of racialized women; how colonialism has affected the education system by neglecting to share narratives and histories of other nations; and how blackness should also be discussed through a non-western, African lens. We also shared different pieces of media that talk about black stories like Skin Folk (Nalo Hopkinson), Children of Blood and Bone (Tome Adeyemi) and emotion pictures like Lemonade (Beyonce) and Dirty Computer (Janelle Monáe). The first event was a success. The intimate nature and respectful environment that Kirsten facilitated opened insightful conversations that everyone was eager to listen to and take part in. To Kirsten, these types of casual
conversations are what’s lacking in Vancouver. The city can be isolating, but this event gave her immense warmth and joy. Not Your Average Book Club is a monthly FREE event held on the second-last Sunday of each month. Location will move across the community each month. Come join the conversation! Join their many activities, including a community photo competition, pottery workshops, Maker Market and art showcases. Collingwood Corner: The Collingwood West Station by Loretta Houben By studying the old BC Electric Railway (BCER) maps online, you can see that there were once two Collingwood tram stations in this area. One was on the west side of Joyce Street at the corner of Vanness Avenue, which is where the current West Joyce-Collingwood Skytrain station is now. This was known as the Collingwood East Station (a little confusing!).
There was also a tram stop at Vanness and Rupert, known as the Collingwood West Station, and I located a colour photo from the Richmond Archives, taken by Ted Clark in June 1954, which shows a group of people waiting to board an incoming tram along the track. The covered station is at the left of the photo. It looks rather crowded and precarious to me, and with the corner grocery store across the

March 2019; the Skytrain overpass for the Expo line to Joyce-Collingwood Station and beyond. Photo by Loretta Williams street, and only two lanes on Rupert going underneath the bridge, it looks like a bit of countryside. The Central Park Line trams stopped running in October 1953, when Vancouver switched to rubber-wheeled busses, considered modern at the time. I remember the bridge crossing Rupert Street and my dad would sometimes take my sisters and I in this area and walk along the old tracks. The top of the tram bridge was badly damaged on November 15, 1973, when a truck rammed into it. The reason I know the exact date was because I recorded it in my diary! The damaged top was removed, and the rest of the bridge was torn down later when the Skytrain was built in the same spot. I took a photo in March 2019 of this area, and the building at 4866 Rupert is still there. Currently it’s a flooring store, but looking in the BC Directories, I traced the business back into the 1920’s as being a grocery store; at one time in the 1930s into the 1940s it was named White Cash Grocery. By comparing the two photos, a great deal has changed. Do you remember this area from 65 ago?

Distraction, or the inability to focus for more than very short times, has become common in the high speed, technological world of today.
Reading levels on this page Level 1
Today, we are bombarded by so much mental stimulation, we find it very difficult to concentrate on anything for very long.
Level 2
Level 3
There are noises and other attention-robbing distractions everywhere. Music, traffic, conversations and especially smart phones, which everyone now seems to be constantly holding to their ears, eyes or mouths, routinely rattle our focus. Today, a growing number of us are becoming worried about what seems to be our loss of attention. With all this stimulation to our brains, our ability to concentrate has been reduced to a few seconds or minutes. The medical term for this problem is Ego Depletion. But we likely call it something like mental fuzziness or tiredness. Some people may even worry that their brains are damaged. But there are strategies to counter this problem. Many are old and existed long before technology was everywhere and overwhelmed our thinking processes. But they are now being revived to helping us cope with this new world. No doubt we will eventually learn how to adapt to this new world. But until then, we might want to think about using the old techniques. These include: 1. Writing things down so we can refer to them later. 2. Using To-Do and other lists. 3. Doing tasks in bite-sized pieces. 4. Taking many time-outs when learning or working. 5. Focusing on chunks of information instead of a steady stream. 6. Switching to other tasks, which allows the mind to rest. 7. Napping, meditating and other quieting actions.

After a winter that seemed like it would never end, spring has come to stay in our neighbourhood, and with that, the launch of our community gardens! The Renfrew-Collingwood Food Security Institute at Collingwood Neighbourhood House runs three Community Gardens and two Community Growing Spaces. Community Gardens: We sponsor three community gardens – these are garden spaces with individual plots for gardeners. Gardeners pay a small fee and contribute to maintenance in exchange for their own plot. The Collingwood Community Garden (next to Joyce Subway Station) and the Cheyenne Community Garden (on Cheyenne Avenue between Duchess and Earles) are currently full and collecting waitlists. However, the new Still Creek Community Garden is currently being built at Slocan Park next to the 29thAvenue Skytrain Station and will have plenty of new plots this year!
Community Growing Spaces: Unlike community gardens, these urban garden oases are not split up into individual plots, but are instead gardened collectively. Our Community Garden Programmer facilitates work-parties, events, and workshops in these spaces and they are an amazing place to learn, contribute to urban greening, and meet other community members. The Norquay Community Food Forest is located on Horley St. between Duchess and Earles, and the Rooftop Garden is on the roof of the Collingwood Neighbourhood House on Joyce St. This year in our Community growing spaces, expect to learn about native plants, herbal medicine, wild mushrooms, climate-changeresilient gardening, pollinators, soil health and more! We will also be bringing eco-arts and crafts and community celebrations to these beautiful spaces. For more information and to sign up, please contact us!
If you are interested in joining any of our garden programs please contact foodsecurity@cnh.bc.ca or 604-435-0323 X. 237. This page is sponsored by the Collingwood Neighbourhood House

Three Links Care Society Would Like to Thank Their Caring Volunteers Advertorial from Three Links Care Society Three Links prides itself on the many volunteers that have chosen to spend so much of their free time and energy towards helping the Centre residents, whether it means accompanying them on bus trips, leading exercise activities, performing music, or just providing the warmth and presence of a friend. As with every year, this first week of April marked the beginning of the annual Volunteer Appreciation month, culminating in the large Volunteer Appreciation Event. Here, a handful of the most dedicated and inspirational among the nearly 100+ volunteers were recognized and awarded. Volunteers, recreation staff and board members gathered on April 26th at the Italian Cultural Centre for an evening of celebration around the vast and wonderful Three Links volunteer community. This massive (and growing) volunteer community is in no small part because of the many opportunities and positions volunteers can find and fulfill at the centre. Everyone can find a place that fits well within their particular strengths, and in turn these places motivate the volunteers to engage with residents, for both their growth and the growth of the Centre. Among the many available positions are: social visitor volunteers who spend 1-on-1 visits with residents engaging in reading, conversations, walks within the grounds, or even offering mani-
cures! Recreation assistants develop activities that help volunteer mobility and mental health, such as yoga or tea socials. Musicians offer soothing melodies during downtimes, or strike up old, familiar tunes to help jog residents’ memories. Some volunteers even come in to act as a meal encourager, offering support and companionship during resident mealtimes. In conversation with volunteer coordinator Mélanie Osorio-Mejia, we asked what really set a volunteer apart from the already admirable majority of those spending their time at Three Links. Though it can be challenging to pick, she remarked how exceptional helpfulness, warmth and enthusiasm, as well as creativity, patience and reliability are all sought after traits for awarded volunteers. Mélanie hopes that the appreciation month, and final event “made volunteers feel appreciated for their outstanding contributions”, and helped to convey the genuine appreciation Three Links has for volunteers investing their “valuable…time and presence…for improving the quality of life of residents.” Finally, Mélanie, and the Centre, hope that the month not only appealed to existing volunteers, but will appeal to new ones as well. It is never too early nor too late to start giving back, and even a once-a-week commitment can make a significant impact on the residents’ lives. Those eager to explore the volunteer community are welcome to contact the Three Links Volunteer Department at 778-452-6508 or fill out an application form at www.threelinks.com .
