Taking out in Renfrew-Collingwood by Paul Reid Currently here in B.C. we are still seeing over 1,000 new COVID-19 cases per day! That’s a lot more than this time last year. The good news is that, in addition to the vaccines, all of the bans seem to be bringing the numbers down again. The bad new is that our local restaurants are still taking a real beating. That situation went from bad to worse on March 29 when new measures were put in place by the province to counter the new surge in COVID cases. This ban, which was initially intended for three weeks, included a halt to all indoor dining, has now been extended to midnight of May 29. Our poor restaurateurs! They have already been forced to meet so many requirements and restrictions. Now, unless the restaurant has an outdoor space in which to throw a few tables, the only way that they can stay alive is through pick-up and delivery. That’s where we residents come in. Let’s consider it a part of our duty during these trying times, for those that can afford it, to make a point of ordering take-out or delivery a few more times than usual, especially over this next month or until the indoor dining ban is lifted.

Trotter, owned the Collingwood Autoworkers shop, and his grandmother ran a beauty salon in the same building. His great-uncle Hilton Trotter is in the second photo. He was in the Royal Canadian Air Force at the time. Bill’s mother, Doreen Trotter, is
the little girl in both photos. Just past the autoworkers shop is the Central Park Sash and Door, and near the corner is Robertson’s Bakeries at 3665 Kingsway. These photos are nearly 80 years old, and it’s interesting to see how the area has changed in that time.

With a new eco-arts program manager and a number of grants approved, the organization is getting ready to put into action several projects, including Beaver Pond(er)ing Lodging. Beaver Pond(er)ing Lodging interweaves the ancient tradition of willow basketry, communityled riparian (stream bank) stewardship and innovative mycelial (mushroom) sculpture techniques. This eco-art project aims to connect stories of human displacement and habitat loss through the creation of a beaver and recreational vehicle (RV) woven from living willow plant material filled with myco-remediative Turkey Tail mushroom mycelium (as shown in the photo). Why a beaver and RV? Local seniors and Indigenous knowledge keepers tell us stories of a time when the area held natural bogs and many streams flowed throughout the watershed. sibility and diligent collaboration. The beaver has also become a national symbol for Canada. This came through the exploitation and trading of beavers for their pelts that were used to make hats for the aristocrats of Europe, where beavers had already been trapped to near-extinction. By honouring and encouraging beavers as ecosystem builders, the artists strive to embody the traditional values of Beaver, while working towards ecosystem health. The RV respectfully acknowledges the residents who find refuge in the outskirts of our unaffordable city. Still Moon hopes the collaborative process can inspire a sense of belonging and a culture of stewardship in the human community of the watershed. Eco-restoration This project coincides with Still Moon’s larger stewardship initiative Shedding Light on Still Creek, aimed towards long-term ecosystem-based restoration: replacing invasive species with native species, improving water quality of local creeks and increasing biodiversity through community participation. Although the vaccine news gives hope that the pandemic will be over soon, Dr. Bonnie Henry has stressed the importance of not becoming complacent, particularly as cases remain relatively high. Therefore, we must continue to remain within our own region of B.C., avoiding non-essential travel.
Still Moon Arts Society is a non-profit organization based in Renfrew-Collingwood in Vancouver and founded in 2004 by artistic director Carmen Rosen. Since inception, Still Moon has used art to raise environmental awareness and connect the community within the Renfrew Ravine and Still Creek. Still Moon is known for its annual festival, the Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival. Willoughby Arevalo is passionate about the ecology of fungi, the ways they shape our world and the ways we shape theirs. His lifelong friendship with fungi has led him down a mycelial pathway – from a start in field identification and mushroom hunting, branching into cuisine, DIY cultivation, farming, education, writing and eco-arts. He has more than 30 years of lived experience with fungi and, in the last decade, has prioritized sharing mycology with communities. New garden pop-up store in Renfrew-Collingwood Mid-April, an Urban Roots Garden Market popped up at the northeast corner of East 29th Avenue and Rupert. The flowers and vegetables come from growers in Aldergrove and Abbotsford and currently there are three other locations in Vancouver, including one near the PNE. The pop-up market runs through June. The pop-up garden store carries a good selection of flowers, bedding plants, hanging baskets, herbs, tomato, zucchini, cucumber, squash, strawberry plants and blueberry bushes as well as West Coast Seeds and garden tools.

St. Mary’s Charity Flowers Project This year St. Mary’s church at 5251 Joyce is running a Mother’s Day fundraising campaign by Ave Maria Garden. Order a flower bouquet by April 30 and proceeds will go to The Door Is Open in the Downtown Eastside to feed people who are experiencing homelessness. Pick-up is May 1 or May 8. The tradition of Mother’s Day comes from the United States. It is celebrated around the world but not always on the same day. In the United Kingdom, Mothering Day is celebrated three weeks before Easter Sunday. Many Mexicans and people from Latin America celebrate the American holiday and a special day for mothers called El Dia de la Madre on May 10.

How do Canadians celebrate Mother’s Day?
Sons and daughters show their appreciation by sending gifts of flowers and cards. Others thank their mothers by taking them out to a restaurant. The carnation is the most popular flower to send on Mother’s Day because they were used in the first Mother’s Day ceremony in 1908. While carnations come in all kinds of colours, their meaning depends on the colour. Pink carnations mean gratitude and white carnations mean purity. Of course, the holiday can be celebrated without gifts or flowers. Many Canadians will express their appreciation with a phone call to their mothers or by spending time with them doing a favorite activity. There are many ways to recognize all the hard work that mothers do.

A love for CNH and its staff: Kulwant Kaur By Collingwood Neighbourhood House
Collingwood Neighbourhood House (CNH) proudly recognizes its long-serving staff members. At the 2019 Annual General Meeting (AGM), Kulwant Kaur, Director of Operations, was recognized for over 25 years of service and dedication to the neighbourhood house. When Kulwant Kaur talks about Collingwood Neighbourhood House (CNH), she often refers to love: her love of working at CNH and her love for what CNH staff do both inside the organization and in the neighbourhood. When Kulwant arrived at CNH in July of 1994, it was an instant love match. Kulwant said she remains amazed at all that the staff do with and for residents and organizations in Renfrew-Collingwood. Kulwant had arrived in Canada four years previously from her native country Malaysia. At CNH, she started as an Office Manager, then Office and Volunteer Coordinator and now, for many years, Director of Operations. Along the way she also served a couple of times as Acting Executive Director. While Kulwant often expresses her love for CNH, she’s also clear that dealing with change—even positive change—isn’t her favourite activity. When she worked as Office Manager and Office and Volunteer Coordinator, her desk was in a very public part of the administration office. Once she became Director of Operations, the role came with a private office. It took Kulwant a full year to make the shift, as she had to get used to the idea of a new work space before moving into it. Looking back on her years at CNH, Kulwant recalls fondly working with former staff such as former Executive Director Paula Carr, and Operations Directors Oscar Allueva and Sandra Menzer. She recalls saying to them: “There’s no university that could teach me what I’m learning from you.” Kulwant’s favourite memory from CNH is the opening of CNH’s Joyce Street location. Kulwant Kaur Glen Clark, a local resident. There was a huge ceremony which felt very celebratory. Another cherished memory is the opening of the CNH Annex. Kulwant was deeply involved with the Annex so, she said it felt wonderful to be part of the opening ceremonies and to think of both the satisfaction of all that work completed and the possibilities the new space represents for our neighbourhood. Kulwant expresses huge praise for the Operations team members, saying they are talented, work hard and are very dedicated to CNH. In her free time, Kulwant loves to watch Bollywood movies, walk trails with her “Just Walking” group, and have dinner with friends—when we’re not in a pandemic. Her current life goals are to help plan her son Mandip’s upcoming wedding, walk up the Eiffel Tower in Paris and travel to India. In looking back, Kulwant notes some people work at their jobs simply for their pay cheque. Kulwant stresses that is not her motivation; she works from the head and from the heart. As those who work with her would say, it shows. Congratulations, Kulwant on 25 (now 26) years at CNH!

MAY 2021 Coming Events Covid Micro Grants for Businesses Ð Second Intake Our first intake was so successful the board of directors has approved to have a second intake for the Collingwood BIA Covid Micro Grant. The Collingwood BIA businesses are eligible to receive a maximum of $500. If you have already received this micro grant you will not be eligible to apply. The Collingwood BIA appreciates all of the businesses following all the Public Health Orders take were given throughout the pandemic. We are aware the increase expenses in insuring the high standards of sanitizing and safety precautions and would like to help our businesses to cover some of these costs.
