What’s up at Vivo Media Arts Centre

Archives, exhibits and more VIVO Media Arts Centre is one of Canada’s leading artist-run centres dedicated to the exploration, creation and dissemination of media arts.

Since moving to Renfrew-Collingwood a year ago it’s become an integral part of our cultural community.

In addition to its educational programs, artist-in-residence series, production support services and regular media art programming, it has brought some of Vancouver’s most innovative cultural events to the neighbourhood, including the International Symposium of Electronic Arts, LIVE Biennale of Performance Art and Vancouver New Music Festival.

It’s November again, so one full year since I caught up with Royal Canadian Legion’s Collingwood Branch #48 and found out that they had lost their charter and would be finished before the end of 2014. “It would take a miracle,” said one of the branch members.

That miracle has slowly being taken place over these past twelve months.

With this community’s help, enough support was found and enough new members signed up to encourage BC/ Yukon Command to give Branch #48 a fighting chance. Though still officially on ‘probation’, the branch is now taking baby steps towards full re-constitution.

It was really be the skin of its’ teeth that the branch evaded disolution. With only ten days before an already much extended deadline, members found themselves with just ten days to submit a new business plan to BC/Yukon Command. At this point, there was no plan as the bid to make the old Jaguar’s Pub their home had fallen through. The branch’s reconstitution quickly had to come up with something new.

These are the basics of that new plan: to temporarily partner with Branch #179 located on Commercial Drive; continue to increase membership (hint, hint) and to wisely use what funds the branch still has to invest in fun(d)raisers throughout the community including ‘Pop up Legions’ (look for those in the coming months).

Happily and miraculously, the plan that was put together in under two weeks was accepted and this 90 year-old branch survived. Eventually, it is the goal of the branch to find a permanent home again in Collingwood. This is great news for every single person in this community. Why? Because the money that the Legion raises through its Poppy Fund Campaign and other fundraisers throughout the year goes straight back into helping this community.

And for this reason, I am personally inviting you to consider becoming a member of Branch #48 for 2016. Its easy and you would really be helping out Collingwood’s oldest organization in this, its’ greatest time of need.

VIVO Media Arts - Continued from page 1

Dahl Media Library & Archive (CDMLA) – Western Canada’s largest collection of media art and independently produced documentaries. Its collection dates back to 1968 when Vancouver artists first got their hands on Sony’s revolutionary portable video recorders. The collection includes more than 6,000 video titles in addition to publications, documents, photographs, film and almost five decades of video technology.

Whether originally recorded on open-reel videotape or the latest digital technologies, the CDMLA makes rare works accessible to academics, curators, historians and the public through in-house research and curated exhibitions and events. There are several in the coming months you should check out.

From November 22 to 28, VIVO joins grunt gallery and Western Front in presenting the inaugural Vancouver Independent Archives Week, a diverse series of free public events illustrating the unique value of artist-based archives and the vibrant history they contain.

VIVO’s exhibition will provide an overview of the archive’s history, highlight recent creative research projects, and immerse visitors in new media art incorporating or working with archival material including sound pieces, experimental video and installations. It will also feature an evening screening of newly digitized video by Gayblevision, Canada’s first TV series produced by and for the LGBT community.

This historic series documents the people, places, events and ideas that defined Vancouver’s LGBT scene in the 1980s.

Gayblevision alumni will be in attendance.

December features two events.

On Wednesday, December 2, Vancouver’s first feminist film and video production centre, Women in Focus, will be featured at CDMLA’s popular annual dinner fundraiser, EATa: Evening at the Archive. This intimate and interactive series invites guests to view materials unique to the archive around a specific theme and to engage in a collegial conversation with the artists and others who were critical players in that historical moment.

On Friday, December 4, the volume is raised as local punk legends donate their talent for a one-of-a-kind musical extravaganza in aid of the collection of artist, provocateur and punk videographer, Lenore Herb.

We miss Cathy each and every day; she is always with us and in our hearts, be it when visiting with Marnie or gathering for happy times. I can always hear her voice and how she said the words, “Bye love,” when it was time to part.

I will never forget Cathy, the Queen of Malta Place.

This past year our neighbourhood has been very different without Cathy. I miss seeing the familiar cars of her family, always dropping by to visit regardless of snow, rain or heat. She was never left alone.

Cathy had a long and happy life.

Do you know about Freshii? This healthy fast food phenomenon started in Toronto by a young Canadian entrepreneur, Matthew Corrin, Freshii is growing by two to three stores per week and now has over 250 stores world wide. Including, now, Renfrew-Collingwood.

Yay! This new location is located just north of the Renfrew Skytrain station, in the Broadway Tech Park at Renfrew and Virtual Way.

I tried out the Spicy Thai burrito. This included quinoa, cabbage, carrots, cilantro, edamame, and spicy lemongrass sauce – to which I added chicken. I also ordered a bottle of juice and some pita chips. Within just a few minutes, my burrito was ready, along with a couple of sauces: sriracha and ranch.

I worked as an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher at Collingwood Neighbourhood House and Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood House. I have also taught English in Mexico, Thailand, Korea and the United States. I still teach a little, but most of the time I am with my two daughters. They are 5 and 3 years old.

I like to travel, read, dance, go for walks and try new foods. There are so many good restaurants to try in Vancouver. I studied French and later learned Spanish and some Thai. I know how difficult it can be to learn another language!

Opened on June 8 this year, Oxygen Y&F, which offers modern yoga fused with fitness, started in Maple Ridge and has since spread throughout Vancouver, the Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley.

Lily is one of the trainers who received her training certificate thru Oxygen.

“Lily’s teacher, Christina Raskin, was a fantastic teacher who not only taught the poses, but passed along to Lily a new attitude and mentality,” says Robert.

The couple wasn’t planning on buying a franchise until they started reading about it on the website. “We looked at it and crunched the numbers and said, ‘Hey, we could do this.’ It’s been a heck of a ride with a lot of busy days and sleepless nights, but this experience with Oxygen has been a healthy transformation for both of us and we’re loving it.”

“Lily blows my mind with her dedication and the amount of work she puts in. She is also filling in with muscle from doing so much yoga,” says Robert. He handles the night shift, Lily the day. “I jump in as much as possible. It’s almost hypnotic. After awhile, the background drops away, along with the stress, and you find your mind completely in the moment, not thinking about anything other than your own breath. This is when you know you are getting into it.” Oxygen currently has five instructors, keeping the classes rolling every day from 6 am to 9 pm.

Lily grew up in North Vancouver. She met Robert while visiting Montreal at a mutual friend’s house. Eventually, Robert moved out here and the two now live right in our community. They both LOVE it here. “I can’t believe how nice the people are in this community. Everyone that comes in just has a heart of gold. We are finding that it is so much more than just business transactions – we’re building friendships.”

Lily and Robert are both very much into yoga and fitness. Though they have little time for hobbies now with the new business and their two-year-old son, back when he did have time, Robert loved to play sports, especially baseball, which he played at a competitive level back in Montreal.

Homeless Action Week in Collingwood focuses on access to public transit

We live in a mobile society and for people to move out of shelters and find housing and work, public transit is essential. Currently in Metro Vancouver there is no plan in place to ensure access for people who cannot afford transit fares. To mark this year’s Homeless Action Week, October 11-17, 2015, Collingwood Neighbourhood House’s Homeless Program organized a public forum on transit access for people who are living on low-incomes.

poverty, including shelter residents. These are successful programs benefiting thousands of people. Out-of-town speakers included Bonnie Pacaud and Collen Huston of FairFares Calgary and Mark Konecny of King County Metro Transit.

Local speakers included Karen O’Shannacery, the retired executive director of Lookout Emergency Aid Society, and Peter Greenwell, Collingwood Neighbourhood House.

The service at the cenotaph will commence at 10:30am. If you are unable to attend a service, you may observe the traditional moment of silence at 11am.

Collingwood Neighbourhood House Annual General Meeting: much to celebrate by Norman Hill At CNH’s annual general meeting on September 23, it was clear that CNH has much to celebrate.

In their report, CNH Board President Julie Linkletter and Executive Director Jennifer Gray-Grant highlighted the fact that CNH’s new annex is on the way. It is being built on Vanness Avenue, off Boundary Road, and is scheduled to open in 2018. The annex will provide more than 10,000 square feet of much-needed multipurpose space for the community.

Along with CNH’s upcoming physical growth, CNH and the neighbourhood can also celebrate the completion of CNH’s strategic planning process.

This has included consultations over the past year with staff, participants, volunteers, community partners, funders and CNH members to get

long service to CNH. These included nine staff with over 10 years’ service, twelve with over 15 years’ service, six with over 20 years’ service (Michael McLenaghen, Kulwant Kaur, Ivy Ng, Teresita Nidua, Diana Taykandy, and Alison Merton), Board President Julie Linkletter addressing meeting and one, attendees Family Services Coordinator Satinder Singh, with over 25 years’ service!

The celebratory theme was echoed in other parts of the meeting.

CNH Board of Directors members were thanked for their dedication. All members will be staying on the board over the next year, although Julie Linkletter has stepped down as president and a new president was to be elected at the late October board meeting.

CNH also presented Windermere Secondary 20+ year staff: Michael McLenaghen, Kulwant School graduate Angela Ang Kaur, Ivy Ng, Teresita Nidua, Diana Taykandy, with its Community Vision Alison Merton Award, which celebrates feedback on how things have been a local youth who will further CNH’s going and suggestions for areas to mission. Angela grew up, studied and focus on going forward. Based on this volunteered in the community, and is input, a strategic plan was created, now pursuing a career in Education at which the Board planned to vote on at SFU. the end of October. The plan, which covers the next five years, will be posted on the CNH website soon.

CNH and the community can also celebrate CNH’s excellent staff, who have worked so hard to support CNH, often over many years. Paula Carr, CNH’s former Executive Director and more recently, Community Strategist for Renfrew-Collingwood Intercultural Development, was singled out for her 27 year contribution to CNH and the neighbourhood.
