It’s open! CNH’s arts and culture hub, the Annex

by Cecilia Federizon After years of advocacy and hard work, Collingwood Neighbourhood House’s (CNH) second location, the Annex, is open!

On October 11, 12 and 13, CNH held three days of Annex opening celebrations marking the culmination of more than eight years of work by hundreds of local people. The 10,250-square-foot Annex, located at Vanness Avenue and Boundary Road, is a new location, in addition to its main site on Joyce Street.

The grand opening ceremony was launched by Jewel Thomas, a Musqueam elder and CNH staff member who welcomed everybody to the milestone event taking place on Coast Salish Territory. Mayor Gregor Robertson spoke of the strong role CNH has played both in Renfrew-Collingwood and within the City of Vancouver and beyond.

Paula Lindner, CNH president, spoke of the significance of this milestone in CNH’s history, noting that the Annex will be run as a mainly arts-and-cultural space, which is a welcome addition to the neighbourhood. She thanked the City, which owns the space and leases it to CNH for a nominal amount, and Wall Financial Corp, The audience at the grand opening celebration was treated to speeches and a special performance by worldclass musician Zhang Zhao Xiang. which built it through a community amenity contribution.

Jennifer Gray-Grant, CNH executive director, thanked the many CNH staff, participants, volunteers, local service providers and the businesses that worked together over many years to make the Annex a reality. She particularly mentioned retired Collingwood Community Policing Centre executive director Chris Taulu, who worked tirelessly to help secure the space for

the neighbourhood; past CNH president Julie Linkletter, who honed her public speaking skills in lobbying for the space; and CNH operations director Kulwant Kaur, who worked extremely hard on the space throughout the eight years from the inception to opening of the Annex.

Happy 100th birthday to John Harlow

To commemorate the 20-year anniversary of the Renfrew-Collingwood Community News, we’re revisiting past stories that have particularly inspired us.

Reading the RCC News gives a wonderful glimpse into the lives of local residents. This story was enjoyable to read as it celebrated the milestone 100th birthday of John Harlow with a look back at his rich, rewarding life.

Staff writer Paul Reid chronicles John’s work history in the transit industry and how his love and passion for this work was passed through his family to create a multi-generational connection.

When drivers formed a Union, Mr. Neville fired everyone. When the B.C. Labour Board ruled against him, Neville sold the company to B.C. Electric.

Herbert Harlow and Rose Campbell met while working at Vancouver General Hospital. They married and had their first born, John, in 1917. In 1925, John’s wife-to-be, Georgette, was attending Norquay School. John and Georgette met when they attended South Vancouver high school (now, John Oliver), married in 1939 and moved onto Chambers Street. Three of their four children would also attend Norquay School.

John would later build a new house on Chambers Street in 1950. He bought the double lot for $600. This is the house he still lives in today with his son David and his wife Sylvia.

So, we have had a Harlow living on Chambers Street for over 78 years. We have also had a Harlow driving city buses in Vancouver

This was the job with Neville Transit that would start the continuing legacy of the Harlow family. John worked with Neville until they became BC Electric and later BC Hydro. During this time, John became a motorman, driving street cars. In 1978, John’s son David would join the transit team. It was around this time that the company would became Metro and then Coast Mountain.

In 2004, David’s daughter, Michelle started driving, becoming the third generation of Harlows to do so. (John retired in 1979; David in 2009.)

For John’s 100th birthday, his family wanted to give him a ride down memory lane. So they rented a vintage 1964 G.M.C. bus, provided by TRAMS, and along with family and friends, the day was spent touring with John down memory lane. This

included John’s old routes in East Vancouver; Sea Island where John worked with Boeing; past the school where he met his wife; the Church where they got married; and others. Needless to say, John had a fantastic 100th Birthday.

#MeToo hits close to home

by DJ A-SLAM Last year, I released a music video with my group the Global Party Starters, titled Gone. The video is based on the night that my mother ultimately decided to leave my father.

I wanted to talk about Gone in the wake of the #MeToo movement because I wanted my mom’s story to be a part of this conversation. Gone is about domestic violence, but domestic violence is gendered violence, and both fall under rape culture.

I grew up with my single mom for most of my life. And I never realized until I was older how strong she was to leave my dad. Domestic abuse is simply violence again women. It is verbal abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, and we should not stand for it.

As the United Nations put it, violence against women is “a plague” that still infects both developed and developing countries. I wanted to share two horrifying stats that exist in Canada, that were given to me by Vancouver’s Battered Women’s Support Services: • 1 in 3 women will experience violence in her lifetime • Every 5 days a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner As men, we can step up, be better allies, question our own beliefs and behaviours around gender and sexuality, and press for progress in eliminating violence against women.

I would also like to thank Bal Brach from CBC for having me in to talk about the song and this subject. In addition to the statistics, we talked about the stigma that women have to deal with around abuse.

There are two stigmas here that we must address. One is around divorce. In many communities divorce is still looked down upon. But the best thing that my mom ever did for herself and her children was leaving my dad.

The second stigma is the focus on women to go out and get help. Although this is important, where is the anger at men for putting women in that situation? Where is the stigma against men when we find out that they are abusers?

November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. I wanted to share this song and video as a THANK YOU to our subscribers, and provide some more insight into our music. I hope you can use this song and video as a tool throughout the year, and especially on Nov. 25 to speak up and speak out. It’s the least we can do.

The Seniors Connection Seniors bus trip to salmon hatchery and spawning grounds by Penny Lim October 22, 2018, a group of seniors enjoyed a brilliant day trip presented by Killarney Community Centre. The bus ride alone was worth going on. Perfect weather and temperatures.

Don’t worry about making mistakes. Instead, make the mistakes and then ask the listener what is right.

This means you will be enlisting them to help you learn to speak as ordinary people do.

Here are some ways to do guerrilla English: 1. Don’t be shy: Talk with everyone, even though you make mistakes. If you are friendly and cheerful and entertaining, most people will be happy to talk. Always thank them.

2. Ask constantly: Ask English speakers for help. Note what they tell you. It doesn’t have to be correct, but is probably closer to the way it is spoken.

3. Trade the word from your own language. This way you will both learn. Most people like to learn words in other languages.

4. Live only in English: Talk with other English learners. You can help each other learn by laughing at your mistakes together. Trade learning methods.

5. Get a boyfriend or girlfriend (or just a friend) who speaks English well, or is a native English speaker. You’ll learn English as it is used outside a classroom and have fun at the same time.

6. Talk every chance you get with English speakers. Many will be willing, especially if you offer to teach them some of your own language. Meet for coffee or join clubs involved with other interests.

Miss Wheelchair Canada 2018: Breaking beauty misconceptions

by Mohini Takhar This past August, the Wheelchair Dance Sport Association of Canada held an event called Miss Wheelchair Canada, a beauty pageant celebrating women of all cultures and abilities, specifically women who use wheelchairs.

The heart and soul behind Miss Wheelchair Canada is Olesya Kornienko, the president of the Wheelchair Dance Sport Association of Canada. Kornienko first came across the concept of Miss Wheelchair Canada from a friend in Poland, who hosted Miss Wheelchair Poland.

Kornienko decided that Canada should have one too, and so Miss Wheelchair Canada was born.

I thought I knew the concept of a beauty pageant, which was to look amazing and be able to do brilliant things for your community. I never imagined myself competing in a beauty pageant, let alone a beauty pageant for women with wheelchairs. Miss Wheelchair Canada, Bean Gill thought that I have been working on projects that highlight the disability community. Anyone who knows me can and will object to this.

On August 25, 2018, I was put to the test. Despite being a creative writing major at Douglas College, I’m constantly trying to find innovative ways to make a character be in a wheelchair because why should I hide the best part of myself? The idea of using a wheelchair is associated with such a negative perspective that people automatically consider you a weak person if you choose to use a wheelchair.

I feel extremely blessed to be part of a movement that showcases women in wheelchairs as fierce and confident because that what this exceptional group of women were and continue to be.

The experience was incomparable to anything I’ve experienced before. Six women, including myself, participated in workshops at the Gathering Place Community Centre where we tried on our gowns, had a hair and makeup team and received dance lessons from Lana Shahar.

Shahar showed us dance moves, adapted accordingly for everyone, demonstrating that women in wheelchairs can dance like anyone else would.

The grand event took place at the Roundhouse Community Centre, with an audience of approximately 100 people. Bean Gill, an Edmonton woman, won the prestigious crown of Miss Wheelchair Canada 2018. Gill embodies what it means to be Miss Wheelchair Canada as she is a co-founder of a rehab centre.

Grandview-Collingwood Legion Branch #179 Update This is the busiest month of the year for veteran’s organizations such as our Grandview-Collingwood branch who are busy with the poppy campaign and getting ready for the ceremonies November 11.

Every year, from the last Friday of October to November 11, tens of millions of Canadians wear a Poppy as a visual pledge to honour Canada’s Veterans and remember those who sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today. While the Poppy is distributed freely to all who wish to wear one, the Legion gratefully accepts donations to the Poppy Fund.

It doesn’t stop with Nov. 11 though. Our local Branch #179, like other branches, is working year round to raise funds for the betterment of society.

Let’s leave a lasting legacy

Dear Neighbours,

November is a solemn month with November 11, Remembrance Day observed in Canada and the Commonwealth nations and Veterans Day in the United States. On this day, we honour fallen soldiers who have fought for the peace we have today. Lest We Forget. Their legacy lives on.

This is a time to think about what kind of legacy we wish to leave to our children, grandchildren and charities. Most people think of bequeathing antiques, jewelry, paintings, real estate and other valuable items.

The reality is that legacy giving goes beyond material possessions but more how we can make a difference in people, organizations and the community while we are alive and how our contributions can still be effective after our passing. It is especially important for families who have extensive assets (investment portfolios, real estate holdings), family businesses and corporations to designate certain assets and the purpose they will preserve. Leaving a legacy is tied closely with estate planning.

To properly set up your desire to make a meaningful contribution to charities, consider the following variables: 1. Whether to establish and maintain a new foundation or to contribute to existing charities.

2. Costs associated to the set-up and ongoing management of the charitable investments.

3. Funding you wish to start with. This can be from $25,000 and up of investments.

4. What is the investment vehicle you wish to use that will maximize the return with the lowest risk.

Remembrance Day: November 11th November 11th is Remembrance Day, set aside for all of us to take time to recognize the sacrifice of those who fought and died for their country in battle, and to remember how important it is to work for peace so we may never again face the tragedies of wartime.

You may wish to display your sentiment by making a contribution and wearing a poppy.

5. The tax efficiency of the funds at contribution time and time of use/withdrawal.

6. Disbursement of grants to various charities (if more than one), selection process and annual amount allocation.

Please join me on Sunday, November 11th at the Memorial Park Cenotaph, located at 41st Avenue and Windsor Street, to recognize the ultimate sacrifice that so many have made across the world. If you are unable to attend a service, you may observe the traditional moment of silence at 11am.

If you do not wish to set up a new foundation and prefer to donate to established charities, there are many to choose from. To name a few categories, there are local charities like schools (playgrounds, scholarships, resources) and churches (food and shelter); special causes like health/illness, segmented by age for children, women and seniors; and others with more global reach in dealing with concerns across borders.

The Legislative Assembly’s Tea and Tour offers BC’s senior citizens an opportunity to engage in the role, history and function of BC Parliament Buildings. The visit includes a light breakfast in the Parliamentary Dining Room, followed by a guided tour with a historical character played by a member of the Parliamentary Players Program. Friday night’s fashion show, aimed at raising funds for CNH’s Morning Star (homeless) Program, was full of music and dance with program participants, volunteers and CNH staff strutting the runway in vintage clothing. The clothing showcased was raffled and sold during the night, as attendees danced to music.

Chitha has been a participant, staff and contractor with CNH since the early 2000s, after he moved to the community with his family. One of his first memories of CNH was the community unveiling of the Multicultural Gateway, carved by Jerry Sheena. This artwork is at the entrance to CNH’s Joyce Street location. Chitha recalled the accompanying celebrations with food, music, and dance – similar to those of the Annex.

Chitha’s experience is about to come full circle as Jerry Sheena is carving the totem pole that will be going up in the Annex Plaza soon.
