My dream come true:
Mandarin duck spotted at Burnaby Lake by Penny Lim Ever since CBC Radio announced in 2019 that “the most beautiful bird in the world” was sighted at Burnaby Lake, my wish was to see this Mandarin duck. How did it get here? Was this bird of China blown off its flight path? We discovered it was a captive bird that flew its coop and was now happily socializing with fellow ducks. Upon hearing the news back then, we rushed out to Burnaby Lake but, alas, missed the Mandarin duck, though we met other avid photographers hoping for a glimpse of the famous waterfowl. The Mandarin duck is often depicted in Chinese art, scrolls and paintings. As an artist and birder, I’m always wistful over seeing one. Apparently, one Mandarin also escaped that year in New York and delighted people in Central Park. After more than two years, my dream came true. On a recent seniors’ trip to Mundy Park with the Thunderbird Community Centre, we enjoyed a lunch of fish and chips and swung over to Burnaby Lake to see the Mandarin duck. It was so exciting! Finally. There he was, attracting huge attention, accompanied by his girlfriend wood duck. Here is the most beautiful bird in the world. He escaped captivity and is now living it up with other waterfowl along with a girlfriend wood duck. Photos by Penny Lim
