Get ready to rumble
The nation’s eyes on Renfrew-Collingwood riding by Paul Reid Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the main event. In the red corner, the contender, fighting with Team Trudeau and the Liberal Party, former CTV Vancouver news anchor, Tamara Taggart! And in the orange corner, the undisputed incumbent, holding the title for two consecutive elections, fighting with the New Democratic Party, the current MP of Vancouver Kingsway, Don Davies! Yes, all eyes were drawn to our community when the prime minister of Canada made it his first stop during the 2019 election to our very own Italian Cultural Centre to bolster support for Vancouver Kingsway Liberal candidate, Tamara Taggart. As you can see from the map, about one-third of the Vancouver Kingsway riding, which streteches Source: tamarataggart.liberal.ca from Boundary to Oak Street, consists of our Renfrew-Collingwood community.
Source: dondavies.ca
The question is, will the relatively well-known Tamara Taggart’s star power be enough to unseat the current MP Don Davies in what has historically been an NDP stronghold? Also listed as running by this time are Kimball Cariou of the Communist Party of Canada, Lawrence Taylor of the Green Party of Canada and Helen Quan of the Conservative Party of Canada.

I wish I could elaborate, but our non-partisan stance here at RCC News prevents just that. So may I just say, may the best person win. We want a clean election. No low blows. And remember, clean up your signs when this is done. The big election is Monday, October 21; who are you going to vote for? You all ready? Let’s get it on!

Collingwood Corner: Grocery prices in 1972 and 1978 by Loretta Houben While fall cleaning I discovered a tiny piece of ephemera. At first, I didn’t recognize it because it’s so different than what I’m used to in 2019. It was a piece of yellowed paper, 14.5” long and 1.5” wide. It’s an old shopping receipt from Canada Safeway, dated 4 Febrary 1978. The total at the bottom is $49.49. This would have been my mom’s shopping for the week. My parents usually went to Simpson Sears every Saturday, where Metrotown in Burnaby is located now, and then grocery shopped at IGA at Old Orchard on Kingsway, or Safeway near Tyne St. I stared at the list, and the highest priced item is $7.33, which was probably roast beef, and the lowest item is 5 cents. The list mystified me, and then I remembered I had a more itemized grocery list comparison in an old book I’d kept from my Grade 7 year at Sir Wilfred Grenfell School. It was put together by the students, and the list compared prices between various products at Stongs supermarket and Safeway located at 22nd Avenue and Rupert in Vancouver. Here are a few items I copied from the list for your amusement: Butter Fraser Valley: 78 cents at both stores Chiquitta Bananas: $1.00 for 8 lbs at both stores Sunkist Navel Oranges: 6 for $1.00 at Stongs; 7 for $1.00 at Safeway Canned Sockeye Salmon: 79 cents at Stongs; 77 cents at Safeway Sun Rype Apple Juice: 49 cents at Stongs; 47 cents at Safeway Campbell’s Tomato Soup: 29 cents 2 pint at Stongs; 35 cents 1 pint at Safeway
Local volunteer honoured for a lifetime of volunteerism Local volunteer Vince Prasad received the 2019 Lifetime Volunteer Award Nominee Plaque at VanDusen Botanical Garden on September 18, 2019. The Lifetime Volunteer of the Year award recognizes seniors and retirees in Vancouver who make a difference in our community and who use their time to help others. Congratulations Vince!
Heinz Ketchup: 46 cents for 1 pint at Stongs: 57 cents at Safeway Hamburger Buns: 37 cents for 8 at Stongs; 33 cents for 8 at Safeway Hamburger Relish: 39 cents at Stongs: 41 cents at Safeway Raspberry Jello: 25 cents for 2 at Stongs: 22 cents at Safeway Fryercut Chicken per lb: 69 cents at Stongs; 69 cents at Safeway Ground Hamburger per lb: 85 cents at Stongs; 93 cents at Safeway T-Bone Steak per lb: $1.89 at Stongs; $1.76 at Safeway Grade A large eggs: 67 cents per dozen at both stores Corn Flakes: 41 cents at both stores Homogenized milk: $1.04 at both stores Kraft Slice cheese: 53 cents for 8 oz at both stores 8 tins pop: 99 cents at both stores The list was put together by Peter Rindje, Wally Rulens and Tim Felcher. This was nearly 50 years ago, and I find the price increase in groceries astonishing. In 1978, minimum wage was $3.50 per hour. Do you think the cost of living in Vancouver has improved over the years?

Learn to read, or read better.
Level 1
The ability to read and write – known as literacy – is the best way to have a better life in Canada today.
Level 2
That is because almost all jobs in Vancouver and elsewhere insist that you have some reading and writing skills, usually in English. It also means that if you can not read, or read well, you will very likely never get anything better than the most simple, lowest paying job. Unfortunately, almost half the population of B.C. finds it hard to read a newspaper, calculate how to make a budget, understand credit card interest rates or fill out a work application form. And most of these people may be immigrants who have never learned English. They may not even ever had the opportunity to learn to read and write. Because they do not have this one important skill, they will likely live in poverty forever. In Canada it is almost impossible to get a job without some reading skills. Most jobs require good reading ability, and many demand far more than that.

Burnaby Hospital Serves Many Constituents of Vancouver-Kingsway As Minister of Health, I am excited to share the great news about the upcoming redevelopment of Burnaby Hospital. The project is part of work underway to provide better health care throughout across British Columbia. In the last two years, the Province has announced almost $4 billion in capital investments for 11 hospitals, with more to come. The redevelopment, which at more than $1.3 billion will be among the province’s largest-ever health care investments, will impact every part of the existing hospital campus. It will add two new patient-care towers with new wards and operating rooms, a total of almost 400 beds (the majority in single rooms), a bigger emergency department and a new cancer treatment centre. The last big upgrades at Burnaby Hospital happened more than 40 years ago. Detailed business planning for the tower is underway, with construction expected to begin in 2024. For more information, please visit www.news. gov.bc.ca/.
Every year throughout Canada and the world, World Literacy Day (September 8, 2019) has been created to bring to mind this problem.
Our community office is located at 5022 Joyce Street and is open from Monday to Thursday 9AM – 4PM and Friday by appointment. Feel free to contact us at 604-660-0314 or adrian.dix.mla@leg.bc.ca. My staff and I are here to help you on matters related to provincial government services and ministries. I look forward to seeing you soon!
Because a large number of immigrants live in the Collingwood Neighbourhood House area, CNH takes a large part in highlighting the importance of literacy by acknowledging and providing some remedies through various events. Look for the displays about this important subject at CNH offices.
Sincerely, Adrian Dix, MLA Vancouver-Kingsway

Moon Festival sizzles despite rain Still Moon Arts Society ran their 17th annual Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival last month, celebrating the four elements of earth, air, water and fire. Despite one of the rainiest event days on record, the festival was still buzzing with attendees from all over the surrounding communities of the Renfrew Ravine. Local musicians and artists did not relent in the weather, and continued to display their impeccable artistic talent in front of crowds of awed and appreciative community members. A huge thank you to all organizers, artists, volunteers and attendees for another successful Moon Festival!

The Seniors Connection Brand new seniors bus driving around the Collingwood community and beyond with a specialist and thereafter the Safeby Himani Bhatnagar There’s a new ride in town, and it is swanky! The brand new Seniors Shuttle, which has been funded by the B.C. Ministry of Health, has capacity to carry up to 15 passengers. It is a striking white in colour, with large tinted windows for natural light, seatbelts, and tonnes of space for walkers and wheelchairs. The shuttle is currently being used for the Better at Home Shuttle Service, which allows seniors to request on-demand rides for wherever they need to go – shopping, doctor’s appointments, seeing a friend – on a by-donation ($0-$10) basis. The service is active on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Call a lift at 604-7195553.

The shuttle is also being used for the monthly senior’s trips, like the recent fun day out in Belcarra Regional Park in Port Moody and Boundary Bay in Tsawwassen. Many of the seniors appreciate the new bus, especially for the ramp, spaciousness and safety features “The new bus has made life much easier for those using it,” says bus driver Michael Hill, who knows how meaningful the shuttle is for the community. Investing in volatile times by Ann Wong Invest with purpose. We invest for many objectives. We typically will save for retirement, a home, vacation, home renovations, children’s education, and the list goes on and on. It is important to identify what is important and necessary (a need) and what is nice to have and would make you feel good (a want).
Once the market takes a downturn, you feel anxiety about the lower account value. As the valuation declines further, fear starts to set in that you have lost out. When the account balance keeps going down, you start to panic and worry. Things get worst and you feel capitulation and ready to sell out and call it quits. Your mood keeps getting lower and sets into despondency. It appears that there is no chance of getting back to where you were before. And finally, depression sets in as the account is considerably of lower value than what you had invested into it.
Clearly define each goal, the amount of funds you need and the time to achieve it. For example, if you are saving for retirement and you are now 40 years old, your goal may be 25 years away to reach the typical age of 65 for retirement. Twenty-five years is a long time for markets to go up (bull market) and markets to go down (bear market).
“Investing is like Black Friday and Boxing Day shopping.“
Investing is an emotional sport. When you first open the account and deposit the funds, there is optimism that you will be making money. Next is excitement and anticipation of the value growing. Followed by the thrill of how well things are doing. Then euphoria, that everything you touch turns to gold. You can do no wrong. As the confidence is extremely high, this is also the highest point for financial risk.
Later, the market starts to pick up a little and bit of hope sparks. It is like a ray of light at the beginning of sunrise. As you keep the account intact rather than withdraw funds, there is a sense of relief. Better news emerges and the whole cycle starts again with optimism. Remember that the investment markets run on cycles. Take advantage of down markets to buy more. Investing is like Black
Friday and Boxing Day shopping. Buy low and buy more when you see the deals. Time in the market is more important and has better results than timing the market. When you are feeling the roller coaster emotions, speak to your financial planner to re-assess your goals, time horizon and risk tolerance. Ann Wong has over 20 years of experience in the financial services industry. She holds the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and Financial Management Advisor (FMA) designations and is also a Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute (FCSI). Send her an email if you would like to obtain an investment risk assessment and schedule a complimentary consultation to start on the right path to financial success. hello@ awsmgroup.com

CNH has remained a major learning opportunity for Maryam, whether it’s a new recipe or a new plant. However, the people at CNH have remained an important part of the neighbourhood house for her, too.
Everyone at Collingwood is nice, helpful, and makes her feel comfortable, she says. For these reasons, Maryam regularly advises others to visit CNH, whether they’re another immigrant from Iran or a neighbour.
Tues 29 Pumpkin soup Chicken panini /veggie option Salad; Oatmeal cookies
After all, CNH has become a place for Maryam to create, learn, and grow.

You Can’t Retire From Being Great Whoever said being a nurse is stressful? After working in orthopedic trauma at Vancouver General for six years and ultimately burning herself out, Three Links registered nurse Sharon Sevilla was eager for a change of pace, and after seeing an ad for a position at Three Links, ended up as part of our Team! Luckily for both parties, it’s been a perfect fit. It’s hard to believe, but 33 years later, Sharon is retiring this month. She will be greatly missed by all. In Sharon’s own words; “When I left VGH they all said I’d be back in six months – little did they know!” The change of pace was just what she needed, and Sharon truly enjoys the more intimate nature of Three Links, and values the relationships she is able to develop with our residents “…as people, not just patients.”
She also likes the emphasis Three Links places on self-improvement, and the many programs and updates the facility makes to improve the quality of care it provides. Outside of work, Sharon has a unique array of hobbies she will have more time to explore in her retirement – including bowling (which she takes quite seriously in fact, as a member of not one, but two, leagues!) and playing World of Warcraft. Of course, spending time with her family, especially her grandson. They are truly lucky to have such a devoted and caring person in their life. Sharon represents the best of what seniors care is to the people we serve. We at Three Links are thankful for the years of service she has given us, and wish her all the best with her forthcoming retirement!
