12th Annual Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival

The annual Renfrew Ravine Harvest Moon Festival is coming up on Saturday, September 13, 2014! This year’s lantern festival will mark the 10th anniversary of Still Moon Arts Society and the 12th annual Moon Festival.

This year’s categories for the Harvest Fair are: Most sizeable sunflower Most bountiful flower bouquet Most gorgeous green bouquet Most creative fall display Tastiest homemade jam/ jelly Most alluring Asian vegetable Most cumbersome cabbage Tubbiest tomato Heaviest zucchini Sexiest squash Beefiest bean Craziest carrot

Harvest Fair: 4:00–7:30 pm Slocan Park If you think you have what it takes to win the “craziest carrot” or the “heaviest zucchini” award, then don’t hesitate to enter into the Harvest Fair for a chance to win some awesome prizes. Entries will be judged by our local elected representatives – MLA Adrian Dix and MP Don Davies - and winners will be announced just before the parade to Renfrew Park.

Take part in reading, writing and conversation groups in the neighbourhood WORD FACTORY CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOPS begin on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at 7:00 pm. These hour-and-a-half weekly sessions are free and open to all members of the Collingwood Neighbourhood House, from youth to seniors. The group will meet every Wednesday in the staff lounge, upstairs, Collingwood Neighbourhood House. Write from prompts, edit, discuss and read your results. Special guests and literary readings. Bring materials to write with.

A PICNIC POTLUCK and walk-about for seniors at Trout Lake Park is being organized by Literacy Outreach and the Forever Young program. A POETRY READING BY RENEE SAKLIKAR: The Collingwood Branch of the Vancouver Public Library and Collingwood Neighbourhood House Literacy Outreach present a reading of poetry

by Renfrew-Collingwood resident and noted Canadian poet, RenĂŠe Sarojini Saklikar. The reading will be held at the Collingwood Branch of the Vancouver Public Library, 2985 Kingsway, on the evening of Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at 7:00 pm. Renee Saklikar writes thecanadaproject, a lifelong poem chronicle that includes poetry, fiction and essays. Her first completed book from thecanadaproject , Children of Air India, was shortlisted for the B.C. Book Prize and is the winner of the 2014 Canadian Authors Literary Award for poetry. Everyone is welcome to attend this reading.

A YOUTH CREATIVE WRITING COMPETITION is being planned for the fall. Watch for details of rules and prizes in this paper.

My intercultural learnings

The Renfrew Collingwood INTERactive initiative in action I got involved in the Renfrew Collingwood INTERactive initiative more than a year ago. At that time, we called it Interculturalism and Physical Activity. The concept is to use physical activity as a tool to foster greater intercultural connections in the neighbourhood. In other words, promoting exercise as a way for neighbours to get to know one another. The project has been a lot of fun, and quite a success as more and more people in our community are getting active and meeting new people!

I’ve been working at Collingwood Neighbourhood House (CNH) for almost four years as the seniors program coordinator. Since day one, I have been fascinated by the way this community embraces and celebrates its diversity. It delights me that on the way to my desk I get to greet my co-workers “good morning” in five different languages! When I needed to translate a simple phrase for a poster, I was able to get it done in one afternoon by simply asking around. I work alongside people with different abilities, religions, genders, sexual orientations, cultures, income levels and beliefs, and it is through this rich diversity that I continue to learn new things every day.

One of my roles with RC INTERactive was to support the volunteer “connectors.”

Connectors are outgoing people who are knowledgeable about the programs and services available for residents in Renfrew-Collingwood. They meet new people and connect them with programs and services that respond to their needs. I’ve learned so much working with the connectors, and it has truly shaped the way I do my work.

Here are some points that stick out in my mind: • Telling someone about a program won’t get them in the door. Inviting them personally

and going with them for their first time is far more effective.

• Exercise is difficult for many people in our community to make time for because of family and work commitments.

• Newcomers have a tremendous amount of things to deal with as they adjust to their new home and this can be very stressful; developing friendships is important in this transition.

• Most people who exercise talk about the social benefits just as much as the physical benefits.

The other part of my role was to be a liaison between the School of Kinesiology at the University of British Columbia and the Renfrew-Collingwood community.

In this role, I supported UBC students who were involved in INTERactive through a course called Interculturalism, Health and Physical Activity taught by Wendy Frisby, PhD. As a graduate of the School of Kinesiology myself, I understand the university perspective so it was a good fit for me to be in this role. I was able to make sure the students contributed to the project in ways that were sustainable for our community.

between community and academia, but this felt like a fair give-and-take relationship. Dr. Frisby recently retired and very kindly asked me to teach her course this fall. I am thrilled to be able to keep the INTERactive connection alive as I take on this new and exciting endeavor. Thank you, Wendy!

by Loretta Houben Summer is a wonderful time to have a family picnic or a reunion.

Everyone enjoys catching up on the latest news and seeing how the kids have grown over the past year. The best part of these special occasions is sitting down and eating uncle John’s BBQ ribs and aunt Susie’s homemade potato salad.

Maybe you’ve never organized a family reunion, but I’m sure you have special dishes in your family that everyone asks for over and over again. Before you know it, the kids will be grown and gone. But if they are like myself, they will have fond memories of the delicious meals prepared at home and will ask for the recipes so they can continue the traditions.

One way to do this is to keep the recipes in your computer or tablet or add them to Pinterest online and share with the public.

You could also make a special scrapbook and include photos.

mainland has many cute cookbooks for photos with matching stickers.

I’ve collected a few but haven’t yet added my own family recipes to them. I wish both my grandmas had done this for me! I would love to see their handwriting while enjoying their favourite recipes.

Late summer is a bountiful season here in British Columbia. Did your ancestors try their hand at canning fruit or vegetables? My aunt Bertha passed on her dill pickle recipe, which I will share here, and every August I make a few glass jars of scrumptious pickles. Of course, it may be mandatory to have some German blood to truly enjoy the tart garlic taste!

Here’s one more idea for sharing recipes. Christmas is a few months away, so you have time to work on it. On a lined index card hand print your favourite recipe in your best handwriting. Paste a photo on the back, and insert the card along with blank cards into a decorated file folder to share with family members at a Christmas party.

Give each member a file folder a few weeks before hand, so they can share their own recipes. You could paste photocopies of family photos on the outside of the folders. Pictures taken in the kitchen would work well for this, or family sitting around the dining table. Use your imagination and have fun! Bon appetit!

Dill pickle recipe from Aunt Bertha Barner

Ingredients: dill pickles, fresh dill, garlic, 1 1/2 cups water, 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar, 1/8 cup sugar, 1/8 cup pickling salt Sterilize glass jars. Arrange two to three sprigs of fresh dill in jars along with one clove fresh garlic. Add pickles. Stir rest of ingredients into water and boil until dissolved. Cool slightly. Pour over pickles in jars. Let cool for one hour and put on lid. Please note: these are not canned. Store in fridge. Best eaten within two weeks.

Summer TEAM presents LGBTQ2 issues to community groups by Sydney Emo Summer school may have been cancelled this year, but a group of 13 youth at Collingwood Neighborhood House still managed to spend their summer working hard and learning.

TEAM, which stands for Teens Educating Against Misuse, is a summer version of Collingwood’s Prevention Education Program.

Participants from grades 7 to 9 select a social issue of interest to learn about and research, and, by the end of the summer, they have a final presentation to showcase to youth and community groups around the city.

This year, the 13 youth in the program chose the topic of LGBTQ2 issues. LGBTQ2 refers to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans*, Queer and two-spirited community.

Through group discussions, activities, games, research and a guest presentation from Qmunity, these youth have learned a lot about diversity and acceptance.

Of course, TEAM participants aren’t expected to just work their whole summer away!

There is time in every session for lots of games, crafts, theme days, and everyone’s favourite: field trips! This year, we did a scavenger hunt in Central Park, kayaked at Deer Lake, went glow in the dark bowling and held our bittersweet wrap-up party at Granville Island.

On August 7, TEAM fostered some intergenerational connections when we visited the Renfrew-Collingwood Seniors’ Centre. The youth came well prepared to share their knowledge with the seniors.

The seniors were their first audience for their presentation on LGBTQ2 issues. When that was finished, they got to see a talent show put on just for them! The youth showcased some great talent—acting out scenes from their favourite books, black belt tae-kwon-do moves, storytelling, dancing and comedy! Overall, it was a wonderful afternoon for everyone involved.

In addition to the RenfrewCollingwood Senior’s Centre, TEAM did presentations at Collingwood Neighborhood House, the CHILL program at Renfrew Community Centre and a youth group at Frog Hollow Neighbourhood Youth from TEAM presenting at the RenfrewCollingwood seniors’ centre.

As this year’s programmer for TEAM, I got to see firsthand how hardworking and fun this group was. I learned a lot as a person and as a facilitator, and am so glad I got to spend my summer with these spectacular youth, talking about some very relevant topics.

Sydney Emo was the programmer for TEAM this summer. She recently graduated from Windermere Secondary School, and will be studying psychology, writing and social justice at the University of Victoria in the fall.

Recreation Programs: Fall 2014

Collingwood Neighbourhood House offers a range of recreation programs and activities for all ages. Activities include music, dance and the arts, as well as other physical and social activities. We strive to provide a good balance of activities for people of all ability levels and interests in our neighbourhood. Most of our recreation programs take place at our main site at 5288 Joyce Street; some, however, are located at satellite facilities in the community. Integration, fairness, cooperation and mutual respect are some of the values central to our recreation programs, while having fun!

Registration Please read the following program descriptions which include start dates, times, cost and registration information. Participants in the many drop-in recreation programs at CNH pay the drop-in fee at the front desk. For some programs participants must register before the program begins; in those cases it’s a good idea to sign up early as many popular programs fill quickly. Most pre-registered programs run for 12 weeks, three times each year (fall, winter, and spring) or as special summer programs. Recreation participants are required to purchase a very modestly priced annual CNH membership to participate in programs.

Preschool Recreation Programs Parent and Tot Activities (Ages 2-5) Games, music and play start us off on a journey of exploration and adventure! Gymnastics games and physical play activities will help children develop social and motor skills. Adult participation is required. Tuesdays and Thursdays; 10 am-11:45 am; $2.50 drop-in fee or $25/11 classes pass.

Clay Adventures (Ages 2 ½- 5) Explore clay through various techniques of hand building like coiling, stamping, texturing and slab work. Ages 9-12, 3:45-4:45 pm Ages 6-8, 4:50-5:50 pm Piano Classes (Ages 5-7 and 8-9) This is a fun class for beginner music students learning piano and theory. This class focuses on the basics of proper touch, hand technique and reading notes. Along with playing piano, listening to music also plays an important factor in the early musicianship training. John Thompson’s Easiest Piano Course will be the book used in this class, which features colorful pictures and useful material for beginning music students. My family and I just got back from six days of camping on Vancouver Island. We had such a good time I decided to make this month’s “Read On” page all about camping.

Summer is nearly over, but as long as the weather is good, camping can be enjoyed well into fall.

Camping is a very popular activity for Canadians.

Canadians who grew up in Canada often have happy memories of camping as children. They want to give the same experience to their own children.

Many newcomers to Canada have told me that they find the idea of camping strange.

Why would anyone want to sleep outside?

Why leave the comforts of home to sleep on the ground? To someone who has not grown up camping, it can seem like a strange idea, indeed.

Why Camp?

Canadians enjoy camping because it brings them closer to nature. Breathing fresh air, seeing the stars, waking up to the smell of the forest—it’s all good for the body and mind. It doesn’t take much time to get out of the city and into nature.

There are some beautiful camping spots under 30 minutes away from Vancouver.

What to Bring?

All you really need to camp is a tent and a something to sleep in (like a sleeping bag). If you want to be comfortable and really enjoy yourself, I recommend bringing a few more things: 1. A sleeping pad or air mattress. Most campsites are on dirt or rocks. It can be uncomfortable to sleep without anything under you.

2. A camp stove, food and cooking supplies. Don’t forget marshmallows for cooking over the fire!

3. Some wood for making a fire (check to make sure that there is no burn ban) 4. A flashlight 5. Extra clothes and blankets. Have them close to you when you are sleeping—it gets cold at night!

The Seniors Connection A glimpse of Chinese history in B.C. Book launch for A Cowherd in Paradise: From China to Canada written by May Wong by Loretta Houben Every Monday at Collingwood Neighbourhood House the senior’s wellness group meets from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. On June 16, 2014, everyone was in for a treat. May Wong read from her newly published book, A Cowherd in Paradise, and although there were 18 people in the room, you could have heard a pin drop.

New programs take off this Fall

COMMUNITY LUNCH Collingwood Neighbourhood House invites you to lunch every Tuesday and Thursday. Please note that seniors are served at 12 noon; others are served at 12:10 pm. Full meal prices are $6.25 for adults, $5 for seniors, $4 for students and $3.25 for children under 12. Items can be purchased a la carte or “to go.”

September marks the beginning of a new school year and the start of our Fall recreation programs. Get motivated this season by registering in one of our new or existing programs. Collingwood Neighbourhood House offers a wide selection of recreational activities including drop-in sports, arts and crafts, french classes for children and yoga. Ready for more ideas worth spreading? TEDxRenfrewCollingwood 2014 is back!

by Eddie Tabakman Residents of Renfrew-Collingwood are soon going to be seeing some familiar red letters in their neighbourhood. That’s because the second annual TEDxRenfrewCollingwood will be taking place on Saturday, October 25 at Windermere Secondary.

Last year’s inaugural event was a big success and organizers Niki Dun and Gemma Scott decided to bring back the day-long conference, focused on providing a platform and environment for sharing ideas worth spreading. Their team of volunteers are all very excited about the speakers that they have lined up for the program, each of whom will be presenting under the theme Rock, Paper, Scissors.

Vintage cars show at 2400 Motel On August 5, dozens of vintage cars courtesy of the Vintage Car Club of Canada (Vancouver and Burnaby chapters) brought some nostalgia back to the RenfrewCollingwood neighbourhood with a stop at the historic 2400 Motel, located at 2400 Kingsway near Slocan.

The 2400 Motel’s first vintage car show took us back to the good ’ol days when citizens motored across North America, stopping at drive-in motor courts for their nights’ stay. “Car culture was responsible for the 2400 Motel being built in 1946, and car culture accounts for its survival,” according to Birmingham & Wood Architects in their report to the City of Vancouver.
