Annual Moon Festival returns to light up Renfrew-Collingwood by June Lam

The annual Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival is back for the 16th year on Saturday, September 22, 2018! A free event packed full of family fun, live music and art, the Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival has something for everyone. Each year, the festival attracts upwards of 5,000 participants from local East Vancouver neighbourhoods to enjoy displays of colour, light and music that pay homage to one of the last vestiges of urban forest in the city. Co-produced by Still Moon Arts Society and the Renfrew Park Community Association, the festival celebrates the harvest abundance and the full moon. The festival spans the afternoon and evening, going from a harvest celebration during the day to a lantern festival at night. As dusk gathers, a procession will form along the banks of the ravine, featuring lighted lanterns beautifully hand crafted by local artists, community members and students.

MOON FESTIVAL SCHEDULE Harvest Fair: 4–7 pm Slocan Park

The Moon Festival kicks off with the Harvest Fair, a home-grown harvest competition featuring entries by local gardeners of some of Renfrew-Collingwood’s best fruits, vegetables and flowers. Enter for a chance to win some awesome prizes! Alongside the presentations will be live music and food. You can also explore the booths of local organizations, artisans and non-profit groups from the community. Twilight Lantern Walk: 7–7:30 pm Slocan Park to Renfrew Park The Twilight Lantern Walk is a sunset parade from Slocan Park to Renfrew Park. Festival-goers will light their own lanterns and Continued on page 2

Collingwood’s Humble Kitchen Expert by Esther Yuen

To commemorate the 20-year anniversary of the RenfrewCollingwood Community News, we’re revisiting past stories that have particularly inspired us. I got to learn about Barry’s rich and fascinating backstory. He’s a significant contributor to this community and it was an honour to interview him. − Esther Yuen, writer

enrolled into the top cooking school in Vancouver, and then worked across the Lower Mainland in various food services capacities. Eventually, he found full-time employment as a chef in an assisted living seniors’ centre. In 2005, doctors discovered Barry had dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition common among taller athletes. The Seniors Connection

Collingwood Corner: Renfrew Auto Camp by Loretta Houben The lure of the open road in the summer months beckons to all who are ready for fun and adventure! Even when automobiles were new, people wished to pack up and go exploring. The Model T Ford car was available for purchase in 1908, 110 years ago, although at first the ordinary working man couldn’t afford a car. By the 1920s, automobile ownership and use increased, especially for holiday travel. The price had fallen dramatically so more people were choosing to buy a car, and the concept of camping with one became popular. According to the 1927 BC Directories, there Vintage postcard image found online, circa 1930s. Located at were a total of 11 auto camps in Vancouver 3690 Renfrew from 1927–1946. In 1930 the address was listed as 3690 Renconvenience of motorists.” frew. Edgerly Payne along with J. Flander were the first owners. I checked out where Edgerly Payne lived, and One such camp existed from 1927 to 1946 in the Collingwood area. In later years, Mrs. K. Ellen Leighs was the proprietor of the camp, remaining until 1946, the last year the camp existed. When auto camps first became popular, tents were available, then cabins or bungalows. A common open space, or court, provided safety and a place to park the car. Motels, a word combining motor and hotel, took over and became popular in the 1960s. Kingsway had a number of motel courts. You can see the last remaining auto court motel, built in 1946, at 2400 Kingsway near Nanaimo. The name, 2400 Court Motel, reflects the address.

If you are trying to learn English, you have probably complained in your own language about how difficult it can be.

http://renfrewcollingwood communitynews.com/category/ read-on/

That’s because English – now one of the world’s most common languages – is often very weird. It seems to break every one of its own rules.

Reading levels on this page Level 1

Words that look the same are often pronounced differently. Or some that sound the same are spelled differently. For example: River and rival look the same, but sound different; tomb and bomb and comb are all spelled similarly but are pronounced in different ways, and have different meanings; ruff and rough sound the same but have different meanings.

Then there are other words called homonyms (from the Greek word homo, which means “the same”). Homonyms are words that are both spelled and pronounced the same as each other, yet have different meanings. Just to confuse you a little more there are several words that we use to refer to different types of word use. • Homophone – all words and phrases that sound the same but have different meanings • Homograph – words that sound and are spelled the same but have different meanings • Homonym – words that have the same spelling but a different meaning • Heterograph – words that sound the same, but are spelled differently and have different meanings • Multinym – words that sound the same but have more than two different meanings and spellings This seeming craziness happens because English is made of many other languages. For example, English contains words taken from Latin (the language of the ancient Romans), French (which grew out Latin, as did Italian, Spanish and Portuguese). But some words come from Anglo-Saxon, which was a combination of the language of two different tribes that dominated Britain 1,000 years ago. And then, there are many modern words that come from English colonies such as America, Canada and Australia, or were invented as needed more recently. Or you could simply say “vehicle,” which could be a car, a truck or anything that carries something from one place to another…or is a mode or condition of being. Does this make your “head spin” (an English term for dizziness)? Don’t worry. It confuses many English speakers as well (which means also or too—not two!). ten. The best way to understand this English craziness is by using it...of-

Ancient cedar’s journey home On June 25, 2018, community members gathered in front of Collingwood Neighbourhood House to share in the blessing of the cedar log. The event was honoured by the presence of Councillor Morgan Guerin of the Musqueam band as well a performance by Tsatsu Stalqayu (Coastal Wolf Pack). Elder Jewel Thomas offered a blessing on behalf of the community and Jennifer Gray-Grant, executive director of Collingwood Neighbourhood House, explained the importance of this project to the community. After the blessing and acknowledgements, participants were invited to join participants of the Families Branching Out program as they celebrated with a wonderful salmon dinner. Lead carver Gerry Sheena has had a long creative partnership with the Renfrew-Collingwood neighbourhood. His work can be found at the 29th Avenue SkyTrain station (Guardian of the Park), CNH (Multicultural Gateway) and Synala Co-op, to name a few projects. Gerry is joined by apprentices Yvette Muskego, Roxanne Charles and Veronica Rose Waechter Danes. Local youth will be assisting at the site. The carving is made of a 600-year-old red cedar tree. This ancient tree’s journey is intricately intertwined with our community’s journey. Red Cedar found its way to us to support the carver and apprentices in their journey to reveal the spirit of this ancient being for all of our community. Once carved, Red Cedar will find a new home, standing solidly and firmly at the Collingwood Neighbourhood House Annex as a guardian and emblem of all of our journeys. Red Cedar’s presence will prompt us to feel rooted in our places together, here in this beautiful land, to honour all of the stories that led us to this place we call home.

Community Welcome Wagon

from Vancouver-Kingsway Community Office

This summer our community got together to extend a warm RenfrewCollingwood welcome to our new neighbours at Sarah Ross House by creating Welcome Wagon baskets for each resident. Throughout July, community members, partners and local businesses showed their spirited support and generosity. Thanks to them, the baskets were full of items that help make a house a home, including handknitted socks and goodies donated by Baaad Anna’s and MOSAIC, fullsized shampoos and toiletries donated by Collingwood BIA, and mugs collected by Renfrew-Collingwood Seniors Society, just to name a few.

Recreation Programs: Fall 2018

Collingwood Neighbourhood House offers a range of recreation programs and activities for all ages. Activities include music, dance and the arts, as well as other physical and social activities. We strive to provide a good balance of activities for people of all ability levels and interests in our neighbourhood. Most of our recreation programs take place at our main site at 5288 Joyce Street; some, however, are located at satellite facilities in the community. Integration, fairness, cooperation and mutual respect are some of the values central to our recreation programs, while having fun!

Registration Please read the following program descriptions which include start dates, times, cost and registration information. Participants in the many drop-in recreation programs at CNH pay the drop-in fee at the front desk. For some programs participants must register before the program begins; in those cases it’s a good idea to sign up early as many popular programs fill quickly. Most pre-registered programs run for 12 weeks, three times each year (fall, winter, and spring) or as special summer programs. Recreation participants are required to purchase a very modestly priced annual CNH membership to participate in programs. For more information call 604-435-0323. Programs with this symbol take place at Collingwood Neighbourhood House Annex, 3690 Vanness Ave, V5R 5B6. Phone Number 604-428-9142

The importance of having a will by Ann Wong Summertime means hanging out with family and friends and making memories at a BBQ or on vacation. We want to spend time with people and things that matter to us. That is why when we spend our whole life building our wealth and assets, we want to make sure that they are passed on to the people and charities that are dear to our hearts.

Having a will in place means your wishes will be carried out they way you want even though you are no longer here. Most people feel that preparing a will is too cumbersome or too expensive. But for the average family, making a will can be a simple exercise of gathering your thoughts, writing them down and seeking a notary public or a lawyer to draft your will. It is a small price to pay to ensure peace among your surviving loved ones and assets distributed on your terms. For those of you who have young children, the will also states a trustee who will manage the assets on behalf of the minors. The trustee does not own the assets but will act on behalf of the children until they reach the age of majority or a specified age. As a side note, guardianship of the children should be arranged in the event that both parents are no longer alive. If one dies without a will, they are said to have died “intestate.” In British Columbia, all the assets will be distributed to the surviving spouse. If there is no spouse, then it gets distributed to the children equally. This is a sensitive area especially when there are children from a previous marriage and you want

to make sure that they get a portion of your assets, rather than 100% to your spouse. For those who have a will, a named executor will be specified to carry out your wishes. The courts will validate the will through a process called probate. It can take on average four to six weeks. In British Columbia, the probate tax is 1.4% for values over $50,000. Some assets such as RRSPs, RRIFs, pension, segregated funds and life insurance can name a beneficiary which bypass the probate process. This would save both time and money as the proceeds typically are paid to the beneficiary in two weeks. Life insurance benefits are paid to the beneficiary tax free. Many people utilize this strategy to pay for their taxes, debts and leave a legacy to loved ones and charities. CNH’s Annex: The Grand Opening has arrived! By Shadia Serrano

This month, the new Collingwood Neighbourhood House Annex located at Vanness Ave. and Boundary Rd. is opening its doors to the public. Many new programs in areas such as the arts, music, cooking, theatre, fitness and a new preschool and more, will be starting at this location during the month of September. Doors open September 4. Drop by and register for a program! In July, the full CNH staff got its first view of the Annex. They were impressed! As Carmen Correal, CNH Recreation Coordinator said: ¨I am glad that the community has this new space; I am in love with it! Since the area was demanding some innovative activities and classes for children and adults, guess what? We are providing them. ¨

The project was born in 2010 when the opportunity arose for the neighbourhood to lobby for multipurpose space in the Wall project. CNH Executive Director Jennifer Gray-Grant explained that the Joyce Street location, opened in 1995, was filled with programming and office space was crowded. “The neighbourhood came together and lobbied successfully for the new multipurpose space; it then asked CNH to operate it. We’ll still run our main CNH site on Joyce Street and add additional programming at the Annex.” Jennifer added that the beautiful space is also available for rentals, at preferred pricing for local residents and non-profits. Free parking is available below the building, off Ormidale Street. The official Annex Opening Celebrations will be held on October 11, 12 and 13, 2018. There will be an official grand opening on Thursday, Oct. 11, from 1-3 pm that includes a formal ceremony of recognition and celebration, followed by a reception. We’ll host a vintage clothing fashion show on Friday, Oct. 12 from 7-9 pm. This will also include clothing sales, refreshments, and music. All proceeds from the event will go towards our Homeless Program. Finally, on Saturday,
