Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival is back on September 14!

by Angus Ho The Moon Festival is back for its 17th year on Saturday, September 14, 2019! This family-friendly event in Renfrew-Collingwood will bring you tonnes of live music, entertainment, beautiful art displays, food and more, for a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and evening.

Co-produced by Still Moon Arts Society and the Renfrew Park Community Association, the festival celebrates the harvest abundance and the full moon, while bringing to attention the natural beauty of Renfrew Ravine and Still Creek, which is one of the few remaining open streams with urban forest in the city.

Join us and over 5,000 other attendees from all over East Vancouver neighbourhoods to experience the transformation of the natural environment of the Renfrew Ravine into an enchanting scene of light, colour and music.

Moon Festival Schedule September 14 Harvest Fair: 4 – 7:30 pm @ Slocan Park The Moon Festival kicks off with the Harvest Fair, a family-friendly festival featuring local musicians and performers, community organizations, food, games and activities, and a harvest competition where you can bring your homegrown crops to win prizes.

Twilight Lantern Walk 7:30 – 8 pm At sunset, attendees are encouraged to light their lanterns and join the parade, which is complete with live music and costumed participants.

The parade will pass by various art installations and maybe even surprise performances until it reaches Renfrew Park.

Lantern Festival: 8 – 8:45 pm @ Renfrew Park At Renfrew Park, witness the beauty of candlelight, exquisite lanterns, ethereal music and the shimmering Still Creek, with entertainment and food just outside of the ravine. The evening closes off with a finale spectacle featuring dancing, stilting, fire spinning and an explosion of light.

Cracks in Creeks: Final showcase at the CNH Annex on September 22 On August 11th, a group of emerging artists performed a site-specific version of Cracks in Creeks: Live Streaming on the banks of Still Creek, as part of the Vines Art Festival. The performers embraced the natural sounds and beauty of the ravine in their surroundings, while the audience moved through the creekside space in Renfrew Park with the performers. Tea was served after the performance alongside a knowledge-sharing session about Indigenous plants in the ravine.

You can still attend the final indoor performance of Cracks in Creeks at the Collingwood Neighbourhood House Annex on September 22, from 6 to 7:30 pm. Join in witnessing the culmination of this youth mentorship project that spanned the entire summer.

Over many weeks, the performers of Cracks in Creeks were inspired by knowledge about Renfrew Ravine’s ecosystem, teachings about Indigenous plants and medicines, eco-art created by Still Moon Arts, and choreography lessons by professional dance mentors.

Entrance to the final performance is based on a sliding scale from $5 to $20.

The Democratic Nature School is being offered through Fresh Air Learning, a popular nature-based school that has been running programs for preschool and school-aged children in Metro Vancouver since 2010.

Do you have a pet? A cat or a dog or some other kind of animal?

If you do, you are probably more healthy and happy than people who do not have a pet.



Pets, or companions, as many people call them, have benefits for their owners.

Why is it good to have a pet?

Pets often become part of a family, taking their place along with children and parents.

Also, many people are more alone today because of changing ways of living, such as being unmarried or having no children. A pet makes them feel less alone.

A long time ago, animals were workers who helped hunt for food or control pests like rats and mice.

But now, these animals are more likely to act as comfort for humans, who want to care for another creature. Providing food and other basics of living makes them happy.

 Over time, life has changed for humans. But one thing has not.

We still want to have pets.

These are animals of some sort that we care for, usually in our homes.

Most pets today are dogs or cats. For years they helped to hunt or to control pests in our homes.

But today, most of our furry friends are there to fill a strong human need. That is to care for other living beings.

Ministry of Health is supporting improved transportation for seniors to help them maintain meaningful social connections and independence in their local communities, Minister of Health Adrian Dix announced August 22, 2019, at the Collingwood Neighbourhood House.

The bus will not only be used by the Seniors Shuttle program, but several other programs offered by the neighbourhood house as well. “We have an exciting line-up of senior outings planned for the summer and having a brand-new accessible bus means we can accommodate those in wheelchairs and walkers,” said Jenny Shen, the senior wellness program coordinator. The Seniors Shuttle is part of the Better at Home program, which is funded by the United Way of the Lower Mainland. It currently runs Tuesdays Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 am to 3 pm. Fees are on a sliding scale based on income and ranges by donation to $10.

Collingwood history revealed through pioneers

The great summer weather brings about such exciting festivities! I am fortunate to be able to get out in the community to meet and engage with so many wonderful people. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Graham Bruce’s Annual Year-End BBQ, Youth Celebrate Canada Day, the very first RenfrewCollingwood Pride Event, the Vancouver Greek Summer Fest, Fiji Fest, and many more. In a blink of an eye, our rainy fall weather will return, so I do hope you get every opportunity to spend some time outdoors with your friends and loved ones.

Published in 1991, Collingwood Pioneers: Memories of a Vancouver District largely chronicles the history of the Renfrew Collingwood through “the personal stories and anecdotes of the district.”

The book reveals a history largely vanished from the public consciousness, but leaves its imprint on the present.

The first main roads running to and from the area were Westminster Road (Kingsway), No. 1 Road (45th Avenue), No. 2 Road (54th Avenue) and River Road (Marine Drive). The first firehall in the neighbourhood was built in 1910 and stood on the corner of Kingsway and Joyce, inside the Guy Carleton Elementary School grounds.

One charming story connected to Guy Carleton Elementary School was in 1939 when King George and Queen Elizabeth travelled via Kingsway in order to visit New Westminster. The school community wanted to see them again and a stand was built in front of the school’s main gates, complete with banner. Veterans formed an honour guard. A bouquet was made and someone was chosen to present it, if the royal procession was to slow down. At the time, the chief of police in charge of the procession did not think it would.

However, King George saw the presenter on the stand and gave orders for the car to stop. The presenter came down, made a curtsy,and presented the flowers to Queen Elizabeth. In response, Queen Elizabeth thanked the presenter and shook her hand. As a result, the royal couple was short of time in New Westmin-

The book is not without its flaws; it lacks the stories of a diverse audience. Nevertheless, the book is a commendable achievement, utilizing various community stakeholders to collaborate on a social history of Renfrew-Collingwood.

If there is inspiration to be taken from this book, its that the stories and the histories of the area still need to be articulated and chronicled. For example, a past story in the Renfrew-Collingwood Community News revealed the existence of a long-forgotten aviary in the neighbourhood (published in June 2019, see renfrewcollingwoodcommunitynews.com/2019/06/15/ collingwood-corner-the-birds-paradise).

Who knows what other stories and histories exist in the photo albums, yearbooks, writings, diaries of our area? It is up to us to take a chance like those pioneers of yesteryear, to have faith and to take a calculated risk to inquire, to research and to share our findings.

Join me at the Renfrew Ravine Moon Festival on Saturday, September 14 from 4PM - 7PM at Slocan Park (29th Ave. and Slocan St.) and 8PM – 8:45PM at Renfrew Park Community Centre to celebrate the full moon, harvest abundance, and diverse cultural traditions in our community. Highlights include local art and artists, music, environmental stewardship, and community participation. Throughout the event, musicians and dancers prepare the way for the twilight lantern parade along the ravine. Beautiful lantern displays and the finale spectacle will take place at Renfrew Park. I am especially looking forward to help judge the Harvest Fair Competition.

Indian Dance and Vinyasa-Flow Yoga classes Collingwood Neighbourhood House Annex, 3690 Vanness Avenue (Corner of Boundary and Vanness Ave.) These Indian dance and yoga classes bring community members together to move, breathe and practice different aspects of Indian philosophy, health and wellness.

Indian dance and mudras involve unique styles of dance moves accompanied with hand gestures. These hand gestures are used in conjunction with breathing exercises and poses to stimulate different parts of the body and mind, and to affect the flow of prana (breath, life force) in the body.

Vinyasa-Flow Yoga is a unique style of yoga that synchronizes movement with breath. Learn to move towards a peak pose through building strength by creating a series of welldesigned poses, conscious initiation of breath and music. This is an “all levels” practice as there are always options for each pose and can be considered “movement meditation.”

Set up sound financial habits

by Ann Wong As Labour Day comes around, children will be back to school, and regular routines are set in motion. For most parents, it is getting them ready for school; from breakfast and lunch, to homework and laundry, to soccer and ballet. Even if you don’t have children, you will feel the difference with heavier morning traffic and the daily flow become more orderly.

purchase 10 units of the fund (price is $25 per unit). In October, the market experiences a downturn, and you are still saving $250 and buy 12.5 units (which equates to a price of $20 per unit). So you bought more for the same price. Then later in November, you again save another $250 and buy 8.9 units (which work out to $28 per unit). Since the market is more expensive, you bought fewer units using the same dollar amount. The beauty of this strategy is that when the markets are at a discount, you buy more and when it is expensive, you buy less.

2. Since the savings is through a pre-authorized chequing (PAC) arrangement, it is like an automatic bill payment no different than you cellular phone bill. I recommend you set up the PAC on a date after your payday. Every month, on the stated date, your savings is set aside before you even spend it. When you work, you see deductions for taxes. You can think of it as an investment that will benefit your future self. Most say they cannot save money because there is not enough at the end of the month.

Saving for your future is not a short sprint. It is a marathon.

As you adjust from the laid-back summer schedule to a more regimented schedule, it is a good time to do the same with your investment strategy. You may have heard of the term “dollar cost averaging” but are not sure what it is. Very simply, it is an automatic habit where you set aside a fixed amount of savings on a set frequency. For example, $250 per month of savings is deposited into an investment fund.

Dollar cost averaging works well because of two main reasons: 1. The account is set up automatically to transfer $250 from your bank account to your investment account. Let’s presume that the markets in September is performing average and you

And soon enough, you won’t even miss the funds.

After volunteering at Collingwood Neighbourhood House (CNH) in Grade 11 for her high school graduation, Odette Videla never left.

The 19 year old continues to volunteer with youth programs and more recently, began working with daycare services offered through CNH, too.

“They have the youth program so [during high school] I would come here every Friday and Saturday to help in the kitchen or in the gym or to help set up when we had events,” she said.

“But now I just come here for fun and to help out if they need it, especially in the kitchen.”

Odette has spent more than 15 years living in the neighbourhood, but she only recalls visiting the neighbourhood house in her earlier years when her younger sister attended daycare.

Part of continuing to volunteer and work at CNH is being able to check up on her sister, who now spends time participating in youth programs, but also simply because she enjoys volunteering.

On Friday evenings, Odette can be found leading baking sessions for Kids’ Kitchen. She often makes cookies with the participants, who range from 10 to 18 years old, but sometimes she switches it up, opting for a recipe new to the youth.

One example is Wacky Cake.

Personally, Odette enjoys working with children and youth all the time. On her days off, she visits CNH “to relax” and spend time with other children and youth.

She credits staff from youth services for encouraging her to volunteer with different programs and to participate in new opportunities at CNH— such as selling slime and jewelry at the Makers Market organized in July—as well as for assisting her with seeking job opportunities.

“It’s just a chocolate cake with no eggs or dairy,” she said. “A lot of people have never heard of it so we tried making it one time.”

When working with children, Odette offers a hands-on approach to participation.

“I’ve learned that it’s better to keep being open minded,” said Odette.

“I always try and get some kids included when I’m baking so it’s not just me baking fulltime,” she noted. “We’ll just ask the kids to come help and say, ‘If you help, you get [a piece] first.’”

“Try to help out as much as you want and can, and don’t be afraid to talk to others or see if they’re okay,” she said. “And just invite everyone in when you see someone new.”
