Sports seem to be the flavour of the season. Be it the Commonwealth Games or the India-Australia Test match; India is taking the world by thunder. We have produced greats from Sachin Tendulkar to Vijender Singh. So there’s no deficit when it comes to talent, then where does the problem lie? The shoddy preparations at the CWG had the world monitoring India’s every step. Indian Hockey seems to perpetually lie in a state of scandals and shambles. Will one “Chak De India”solve the problem? Why do sports and scams go hand in hand? A lot of pertinent questions seeking answers… In the column “The Vantage Point”, we have sparked a debate whether an image off-the-field is as important as one on-the-field, for sportsmen. This issue of Zing is also filled with a lot of fun stuff; where we have addressed sports in a lighter vein. Looking forward to your suggestions for future issues! Happy Reading! Rtr. Director’s Blah: This month, Rtr. Bhargav Pajwani gets in touch with his ‘sporty’ side and expresses his serious views and concerns about the evolution of sports. Sports: Paisa, Drugs aur Dhokha? Sports hold different meanings to different people. Some would say it’s their hobby, time pass, passion, etc. Everyone plays sports, either indoor or outdoor. However, today sports is losing its importance as before. Sports were considered as a religion, but no more. Corruption is the root cause of sports losing its essence in today’s world. It all boils down to “Money”. Today, everyone who plays sports, plays with the intention of earning loads of money. This reminds me what the famous basketball player; Shaquille O'Neal said once, “I'm tired of hearing about money, money, money, money, and money. I just want to play the game, drink Pepsi and wear Reebok.” Today, a child who is really talented will not get into a sports team because the child of some famous personality, with no talent at all, has already occupied that spot. I don’t think this is called sports. “Money talks”; that’s the sad truth that we face today. The recent scandal involving Pakistani cricketers is known to all. Sportspersons have betrayed their fans many a times, over the years. From the beginning of time, Sports has been around. It is the competition that everyone loves. The high that winning provides, sadly drives many people to unethical means to achieve it. “Cheating” is monitored in professional sports by the use of referees or umpires. But, with the discovery of many “nutritional” supplements, many new forms of cheating have risen that cannot be monitored on the field. Many players used and still use steroids to enhance their muscles so they are stronger during game play. Drugs in sports can cost a player his or her career and more seriously, their lives. Sadly, the adulation and fame that these sportspersons receive, blind their vision of sanity. I just wish that Sports regains its true essence that it has lost in the 21st century. -Rtr. Bhargav Pajwani Sports Administrator

THE VANTAGE POINT Zing, tries to gain some perspective on whether an offoff-thethe-fieldfield-image is as important as one, onon-thethe-field. “Miss Goody--TwoGoody Two-Shoes” and “(Not quite)…The girl Next Door” engage in a war of words! Miss Goody-two-shoes, Rtr. Devyani
(Not quite)...The Girl Next Door, Rtr.
Shah, states that an image off the field is as important as one, on the field.
Devanshi Sanghvi argues that sportsmen
FOR:The headlines screaming about the multiple affairs of Tiger Woods sent out shockwaves into the world of sports and disappointed millions of fans worldwide when the illusion of Tiger being a perfect gentleman and sports person par excellence was shattered. Reading about him, even the most ardent fan would be saddened not only for his sporting histrionics, but also for his ability to be at the pinnacle of success and being such a good human being and having an amazing off field record. He was a perfect role model for anyone striving to achieve great heights. Once the image of the star gets sullied in the minds of the public, then no Public Relations agency, no matter how good, can salvage it, because it is created through years of hard work, consistent performance, and a clean off field record. A shining example of this truth would be the hero of India, Sachin Tendulkar. Not only is he one of the few true legends of cricket, his on field performance being spell binding and flawless, even his off field record is spotlessly clean and perfect. This is reflected in his legions of fans who worship him for his perfection on and off the field. A person who has no skeletons in his closet or is not mired in controversies due to his off field antics will have peace of mind and a clear conscience which will in turn help him to concentrate on his on field performance and improve his record. This especially holds true in the case of sports persons as they are the role models to the youth of the society. They are the advocates of sportsmanship spirit, team work and dedication. The youth imbibes these qualities from their sports idols. When a sports person accepts his mistake and apologizes for the same and does not repeat it in the future, they set a good example in the minds of the people; that their idols are honorable and responsible enough to own up to their mistakes and bear the consequences. This will foster truthfulness and responsibility in the minds of the follower of sports. After all, even when a common man makes a mistake, he has to own up and apologize to his family, then why not a sports person? Why should there be any distinction between a common man and a sportsman? In fact, don’t they have a greater responsibility to their fans, who consider them family if not God-like?
should not be judged beyond their game.
AGAINST: As a crazily ardent football fan, I would take this opportunity to fiercely defend my dear footballers and all sportsmen, for that matter. When we pick any sportsman as our favourite, we often tend to go slightly overboard. The paparazzi literally hound them, wherever they go, whatever they do. Obviously all their scandals and controversies make for juicy gossip and that’s what these reporters get paid for. But they are human beings, too; and just like you and me, aren’t they are also entitled to their privacy? Who likes their dirty linen being washed in public? I agree that what the likes of the promiscuous Tiger Woods, John Terry, Ashley Cole etc and more recently, Wayne Rooney have done is very upsetting and disappointing too. But why do people just start hating them? They forget that they loved Wayne Rooney the ‘footballer’ and not Wayne Rooney the ‘person’. If a common man cheats on his wife, it’s no big deal. But if it happens to these people, the same offence becomes a topic of national debate. It’s high time we mature and grasp the fact that, ‘It’s human to err!’ and sportsmen are no exception. Every one of us has messed up at some point in our lives and its okay to slip as long as you learn from it and redeem yourself. And besides, we all have skeletons in our closet. So who are we to judge? Think about it. Instead of sitting through the game during a rough patch, these are the people who give their ALL on the field. A packed stadium with all the rival-team supporters, booing you and chanting nasty things, they seem oblivious to it all; but they are obviously a bundle of nerves. It’s inhuman to expect them to handle all the pressure! Recently the troubled English star-sticker, ‘LoveRat’ Wayne Rooney saved England the blushes and scored the only match-winning goal in the World Cup qualifiers. And all those 80 odd thousand fans still cheered! I cheered for him too. Even John Terry is one of the best captains I’ve seen, be it for Chelsea FC or England. I thought it was an unfair decision when national team coach Fabio Capello stripped him of his captaincy just because of a ‘personal problem’. Millions across the globe love them. For us fans, they are our Gods. Kids in every household want to emulate them. Why? Not because they have a squeaky-clean slate in their personal life but because but because they live to play; ‘ON’ the field! Personally when my heroes (read: footballers) come on the field, they leave me mesmerised, doing what they do best. They made me fall in love with the ‘beautiful game’ and that’s why they have all my love and respect. And I sincerely hope that’s why you love them too.
Apparently, Suresh Kalmadi tried hanging himself in the CWG stadium, some days before the event commenced. But the ceiling collapsed! =P
Crazy Chameleon, Rtr. Nishita Kularni takes a lightlight-hearted
The truth behind the ban on bulk sms was to stop Kalmadi jokes and had nothing to do with the Ayodhya verdict.
dig at CWG 2010
Terrorists skipped CWG 2010 citing unlivable conditions and fear for their safety. =D
Q: How many contractors are required to change a light bulb in Delhi CWG stadium? A: 1 Million. (1 to change bulb and rest 999,999 to hold the ceiling)
What is common between the CWG committee and students??? Ans: Both start their preparations at the 11th hour!
Ba ba Kalmadi, have you any shame. No sir, No sir, we are having a Common Loot Game. Crores for my partner, crores for the dame, Crores for me too, for spoiling India's name! xD AMAZING BUT TRUE: If you re-arrange arrange the letters "Sir U made lakhs" you get "SURESH KALMADI ;)
THE SLICK MAVERICK MAVERICK, Rtr. Siddhi Desai proves her theory that there is a lot of similarity between girls and sports. Confused? Read on…
GAMES GUYS PLAY… One day I was just listening to Beyonce lament about how she’d be if she were a guy and I actually tried to ponder at least about what they think of the most. Well I’m not trying to judge but the things they think about the most are girls and sports…and when I thought of it in that way I realiz realized how very similar these two are. So here are some statements that prove my theory! There’s a lot of competition. Failure and rejection might happen, you might get out of form too; but once they are back in it there’s no stopping them. They like it because because there’s a lot of variety in it. Your college rep depends on how good you are at it. Every guy has their type. Once you’re married, you might need to compromise. You’d also have to teach your son about it. You don’t always need action with it, sometimes watching them is enough. There are just so many to explore that one can never get tired of it.
PAST PROJECTS RCJC TUESDAYS 7/9/2010: SPONGEBOB TUESDAY Tuesdays, are never going to be the same. RCJCs PR cell has come up with a fun way to make another boring weekday fun! We've heard of painting the town red, but RCJC dared to be wacky. They organised a SpongeBob day as a welcome to the freshers and thus painting the college yellow! Everyone was told to wear yellow, to show their love and appreciation for their favourite cartoon character. The event was a huge success! RCJC Tuesdays are not just about themes, but about using your mind to come up with something totally crazy. It’s time to let your wild side out. RCJC Tuesdays, So look out for some more RCJC Tuesdays. You're in for a fun day!!
STREET SMART It was a day of the survival of the smartest! Street smart was organised on Friday the 17th by the Personal Development avenue. It consisted of 7 teams. Each team had 4 people. The treasure hunt lasted for two and a half hours, but, it was no ordinary treasure hunt. It had a set of a little off the top rules. The participants weren't allowed to use cabs or rickshaws, only trains or buses and had to provide proof of the same. They were given 10 items and each item was preceeded with a clue in the form of a riddle. Some were a piece of cake while some really required thinking caps! For instance, “Why is bandra finger lickin good?” This was one of the easy ones, it was KFC! The participants had to go to KFC, click a photograph with all the team members, as evidence. Some other items that they had to find were - Banana leaf, red lipstick, mens comb, belt, maps. This fun quotient never seamed to cease. Team members kept getting lost, and that resulted in the rest of the team frantically searching for them. Reporting time back at college was at 1:30 and 3 teams won. An extra bonus was that the first team back, got 15 extra points. It was a race against time, and truly only the smartest survived!
NATURE TRAIL Well, if you missed Nature Trail, well you certainly missed out on a lot of fun. The Club service Avenues of the Rotaract Cluns of Jai Hind College and NM College organised a trek in the Borivali National Park on Saturday the 18th of September. The trek was about 6- 7 Kms, to the Kaneri Caves. En route, the trekkers came across a waterfall, and all hell broke loose. The people went crazy! They had water fights, and everyone started running around, laughing and making new friends. Once they reached the caves, they found out there were over a 100 little caves to explore. A gala time they had, indeed! There was a small waterfall there too, and once again everyone let out the little kid in them, and had a blast. At around 6:00 everyone, drenched and tired, took a bus back to the entrance. Gorging on Mc Donalds’ burgers, on their way home; their experience of the trip certainly echoed the words, “I’m loving it’!!!
SPLURGE Splurge, an event held in the first week of September was based wholly on games, both indoor and outdoor. Amongst all the games organised were Badminton, Cricket, Chess, Carrom, Throwball, Volleyball, Football, etc. The event was organised by the Rotaract Clubs of Jai Hind College, Andheri, Bombay Hills South, L. S. Raheja College, Mithibai College and R. J. College. RCJC ites brought glory to the college by winning maximum gold medals and at least one medal in all the games held. It was a highly victorious event for RCJC!
Charter Day
SpAdS ‘SpAdS’ was hosted in the 2nd week of September by the Club service avenue. Seven teams of 5 were formed. RCJCites spent an exciting evening presenting ads(commercials) in a matter of 5 minutes. A very tough job indeed! The participants made really creative spoofs linking the objects given to them with their favorite ads. Choosing winners among the whacky presentations was a tough call for the judge.
RCJC held Charter Day, an event to celebrate its 16th birthday. The celebrations were in full swing with a yummy cake to brace the occasion. Everyone had a gala time relishing the mouth watering cake. Pictures were being clicked to create memories. To make the event a memorable one, guys were dressed in blue and girls in pink. The BOD dressed in black which made them stand out! The celebration became fun after a video called 'TAKE 92' was played that included all the activities that took place in the past 92 days. It was interesting, eye catching and A-W-E-S-O-M-E! =D
Bang-A-Boom! When the P.R team of R.C.J.C throws a party, you can definitely expect something totally awesome! ‘Bang-A-Boom’ was definitely in sync with the true spirit of R.C.J.C. This Fresher’s Party, held on th 20 September 2010, was truly a grand welcome for all the F.Y.J.C folks. Drinks (read: soft drinks), D.J. and loads of fun and dancing, at Walala saw all the Jai Hindites living it up till almost midnight. The bash was a huge hit with the all the freshers and everyone else of course. To sum it up, “Bang-a-boom” was a night of ‘strict’ partying :D
WORD WAR I Many of you would have read the title as, “WorLd War I” but fortunately no, you won’t be bored with all that jazz. This is the war or words, called “Word War I” (where the ‘I’ is actually capital letter ‘i’) Here all the best brains from various schools like St. Blaise, St. Xavier’s, Queen Mary proved their mettle and strived to be the ones who “Came, Competed and Conquered” the ‘War’! There were two elimination rounds, the former consisting of questions based on five topics: Math, Science, G.K, Geography and Facts and the latter round consisting of a ‘Word Search’ on professionals. The Final, which was conducted on 12th. September at Pushpakunj Hall, was a quiz a la ‘Bournvita Quiz Competition’ i.e., there was a ‘Buzzer Round’ and St. Xavier’s claimed the trophy and certificates!! So, who won the “word war”?? St. Xavier’s proudly said “I” ;)
Fine Arts Fest A vibrantly colourful and innovative event, Fine Arts Fest held in the 3rd week of September in the college campus itself, saw active participation on the part of the members. The fest fired the creativity of the participants in a fun filled way and boasted of funky events such as: 1. Sweet-tweet, which had the participants making bird houses from waste materials like bottles and leaves. 2. Posteria led the contestants creating posters to the theme of ‘my world’. 3. Old is gold, make it bold brought out the fashoinistas in the participants who were given materials like old clothes and lace and were asked to design a garment for girls. 4. Theme my bag had interesting themes such as college person, Hollywood and India and the participants were provided with cotton bags, glitter and sequences and were asked to design their bags based on the themes. The participants put their creative minds to work and came up with wonderful pieces of art! A truly exciting, eco- friendly and colourful event!
ART ATTACK Who can ever forget the golden years of their childhood? Those carefree days with no worries and no hurries, no wonder we always cherish those memories. In these fond remembrances we were always shrouded with happiness, innocence and colours around us. And you’d have to agree that we always loved to get these colours on paper, no matter how well did or did not do it. We did just that in RCJC’s event ‘Art Attack’ held at the garden school. We entered into the humble school that was filled with chirpy, enthusiastic children ready to absorb any new thing we taught them like sponges. We came in armed with tempura colours, plates, papers, tissues and half- cut okra [lady fingers] to teach them how to paint with lady finger’s by dipping the cut bhindi in the paint and using it as a stamp to make the design. We game them a paper with a butterfly drawn on it and we were amazed at how beautifully the children painted it. Next came thumb printing with the colours on a sketch of a flower. It was marvelous to see all the colours of the rainbow sparkle on those pieces of paper. Seeing those kids, we became children again. After bidding them goodbye we went back to trudging the trial of mud after traipsing through the memories of our childhood and reminiscence of our precious past.
JOY OF GIVING WEEK… In today’s shallow world, it is no surprise that no one ever has the time to give back in any way. It’s assumed that by giving, one gets nothing in return so why bother? But, Why not? That’s exactly what was preached and practised at the JOY OF GIVING, toy donation drive. The years that we consider our golden years are more of a struggle for these children, so we did our bit by collecting toys for these less fortunate children. We then gave these to an NGO by the name of ‘Salaam baalak’ that strives to help the street children in Mumbai. It was a large scale project handled by the Rotaract clubs of Jai Hind College, HR, Bombay, KC and Bombay Hills South. We also added some sweetness to these street kids’ days by distributing ice cream among them. It was really nice to realize that rather than just showing compassion and pity, we were able to provide them at least a little joy that would last. And we received tenfold blessings and joy in return. So lets extend the concept of The Joy of Giving Week from a seven-day concept to a 365-day one!
“A Little Birdie Chirped That” This little bird has decided to revamp her column, in this edition of Zing. RCJC’s little birdie did a lot of snooping in the past couple of days. She had an anonymous ‘rapid fire’ with the BOD. Here’s what she’s come up with… The one who does not act their age but act their shoe size! Well, this one is a tie between BHARGAV and PRIYANKA! :O Guess it’s time to grow up, huh? ;) :P The one who cracks the lamest jokes…ALWAYS! RCJC’s BOD has unanimously declared the lamest… “SAKSHAM”! Behnaz came a close second! =D The Avenue that has fewi-kwik kwik like bonding between its it directors! Professional Development led with a whopping majority! Success ki seedi, Go PD!! The Sabse Mastiwala BOD! Without a doubt, all directors seem convinced that Dhaval is the Sabse Mastiwala BOD. No wonder, there wasn’t anybody who came close to him in the running! The Most Crush-worthy BOD! Yeow! A majority of the directors seem to think that NONE among the BOD are CRUSH-WORTHY! WORTHY! Hmmm…what’s next? A makeover for the BOD, perhaps? ;) :P :D Be on the lookout for RCJC’s little birdie! She may just be perched on your shoulder! ;) Uh Oh…! In the Last issue of Zing, we forgot to mention the names of the directors of International Service among the RCJC BOD. Oops! Really Sorry, Aditya and Aditi a.k.a Tom and Jerry ;) ! So to set the record straight… International Service Directors: Rtr. Aditya Goswamy, Rtr. Aditi Verma Hoping that’s settled now! You know, we love you guys! =D \/ Peace \/ ! =) CONGRATULATIONS!!
