New Indian Motorcycle to be unveiled Relaunch will introduce classic bike revamped by Polaris Tom Griffith Journal staff STURGIS | Final preparations were under way Friday for Saturday night’s worldwide premiere of the all-new Indian Chief motorcycle at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame, 999 Main St. The 8 p.m. relaunch of the classic motorcycle, which is free and open to the public, features live music an appearance by the H istory Channel’s “American Picker” and bike enthusiast Mike Wolfe, and a video tribute to the legendary Indian motorcycle. Founded in 1901, Indian i s A m e r i c a ’s o r i g i n a l motorcycle company. This is the first glimpse the public will have of a new Indian motorcycle since Polaris Industries acquired the iconic brand from Anglo-Italian entrepreneur Stephen Julius more than two years ago. Since then, the $2 billion Medina, Minn.-based company has undertaken a complete redesign of its product range and its new motorcycles are being assembled in Spirit Lake, Iowa. “The Sturgis rally was started in 1936 by the local Indian Motorcycle club, the Jackpine Gypsies, and has grown to become the

world’s largest motorcycle rally, drawing riders from across the globe,” Vice President of Polaris Motorcycles Steve Menneto said in a release. “We found it fitting to unveil the new Indian Motorcycle at Sturgis given

its heritage at this signature motorcycle event.” Worldwide re-ntroductions are planned in coming months. The Indian Chief will make its first European appearance next month during European Bike Week at Faak am See,

Austria, followed by its more-formal presentation at the EICMA trade fair in Milan, Italy, Nov. 7-10. From 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. all week in Sturgis, bikers have the opportunity to visit the Indian motorcycle display at Second

and Lazelle streets, and view products, apparel and demonstrations. During the same hours Sunday through Saturday, properly attired, helmeted and licensed motorcyclists may be among the first to ride the 2014 Indian Chief.

At 7 p.m. Friday, the S t u rg i s B u f fa l o C h i p Campground will tout the rejuvenated motorcycle with Indian Motorcycle Night with special promotions and appearances, and a display of vintage Indian motorcycles.

It’s easy (and filling) to get religion at the rally Mary Garrigan Journal staff

You can get religion at the Sturgis rally, of course, and a plate of pancakes to go with it. As it has for more than 30 years, Grace Lutheran Church, 1601 Sherman St., will host a daily pancake breakfast for bikers and other rallygoers. The 100,000-plus member Christian Motorcyclists Association is also based out of Grace Lutheran during the rally. Pancakes and Christianity seem to go together at the rally, either as a free-meal ministry or as a church fundraiser. Here are several locations offering prayer and pancakes again this year: •  Sturgis First Presbyterian Church, 1319 Junction Ave., daily from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. between Aug. 5-10. Cost is $10. •  Keystone Biker Breakfast, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, 1011 E. Madill St., also hosted by Keystone Congregational United Church of Christ. •  Even the Buffalo Chip campground offers a free pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. daily

during the rally that is served by the Son’s of Light Ministry. The largest Christian ministry presence at the rally is the 450 to 500 CMA volunteers who show up each year. In the process of working two-hour shifts at everything from the Main Street photo towers to the motorcycle museum to the city jail parking lot, CMA volunteers have the opportunity to hand out some of the 6,000 prayer rags, known as “rag tracts,” that CMA national evangelist Roger Wilson brought to the 2013 rally. He rarely takes any home with him to Ottumwa, Iowa. “There’s always a chance to minister people there,” Wilson said of managing parking at the city jail. This is Wilson’s 30th year at the rally, and the 26th that his group has pa r t n e re d w i t h G ra ce Lutheran. CMA hosts a 9 a.m. hour-long daily worship service at the church that is aimed at equipping volunteers for daily ministry with song and devotions, but which is open to all. “We do have people come in off the streets,” Wilson said. CMA’s rally-related ministry has expanded

over the years, said Gary Smithers, South Dakota CMA coordinator. Ministry opportunities have grown far from Sturgis to include hospital chaplaincy duties, nursing home visits and ministries at area youth correctional facilities. “There is even a music ministry with live music playing from CMA members, across from the police station,” said Smithers. “All this done with CMA members that volunteer from all over this country to do ministry in the name of Jesus.” A smaller national biker ministry, Hellfighters, sets up at Mission at the Cross, a Sturgis church at 711 Anna St. marked by a large white cross visible from Interstate 90. T h a t ’s w h e r e B i l l Meirose, pastor at Mission at the Cross, will host a “commissioning service” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, for all Christians coming to the Sturgis rally in some ministry role. “We pray a blessing and we have them pray for each other,” he said. “It’s for all Christian motorcyclists coming in to work the week.” At his church, that means about 90 Hellfighters members who are

coming from across the U.S. to offer whatever help folks may need during rally week. “We just open it up to folks in need,” he said. That “need” always enables Wilson, an ordained Assemblies of

God minister and fulltime CMA staffer who oversees 10 states, to share his faith at the rally. “I have always been blessed with being able to minister to several people during the rally,” he said.

“But I’m always looking for it, too. It’s out there, you’ve just got to find it and respond.” Contact Mary Garrigan at 394-8424 or mary.garrigan@ rapidcityjournal.com

Liter biers, lederhosen come to Sturgis rally John Lee McLaughlin Journal staff

A dirndl or some lederhosen aren’t required to enjoy a hearty stein of German bier, but both add some traditional flavor. While the fashions are frequently seen in a traditional German biergarten, you won’t have to travel abroad to find such a setting. Paulaner, a Munichbased brewery, is hosting a 400-seat biergarten complete with Bavarian décor in Piedmont (Exit 46 off I-90) for the first time this year during the Sturgis motorcycle rally. Oktoberfest at the Rally will be open through Sunday, Aug. 11. It’s also Paulaner’s first commercial venture into western South Dakota. And it was brought to the region by a 23-year-old college student who first encountered it during an internship in Germany. Austin Hagg, a business marketing major at the University of South Dakota, traveled to Germany to work at Volkswagen headquarters in Wolfsburg. During his year-long s ta y, H a g g h a p p e n e d a c ross O k to b e r fe s t i n Munich, Germany. He fell in love. “I just remember Paulaner as one of my favorite beers,” said Hagg, a Rapid City native and currently project manager for the event. When he returned to South Dakota, Hagg emailed the company, wh i c h m a i n ta i n s U. S. headquarters in Denver, to see if he could buy some of the beer and serve it during the Sturgis rally. It turned out the company has a traveling biergarten that traverses the nation. “The only way we could get the biergarten here was with the help Fisher Beverage,” he said. “After this, Paulaner will be available everywhere in the Hills.” Once Fisher Beverage, a Rapid City distributor, was on board — Paulaner came and set up the garden. “They’re allowing us to keep it for the whole rally instead of just two days or so,” Hagg said. “It’s kind of a kick-off welcome-Paulaner-into-the-Hills-type

Work planned at Terry Peak Journal staff LEAD | Beginning Monday, Stewart Slope Road near the Barefoot Condominiums at Terry Peak will be reduced to one lane during daytime hours, according to the South Dakota Department of Transportation. Motorists can expect one-way traffic, with flaggers and delays of up to 15 minutes during daytime hours for about two weeks. Two-way traffic will be restored during the evening and overnight hours. Motorists should expect gravel surfacing for about 500 feet on Stewart Slope Road during the project. In addition, on Highway 473 (Nevada Gulch Road), about 1,000 feet north of the Terry Peak Ski Resort Nevada Gulch parking lot, a traffic diversion around ongoing road work has been constructed with gravel surfacing for about 500 feet. Two-way traffic will be maintained at all times on Highway 473. For complete road construction information, go to www.safetravelusa. com/sd or dial 511.
