Welcome to Hot Springs! Visitors come to Hot Springs for a day to enjoy one of our many attractions, and then a funny thing happens; they come back for a lifetime! Hot Springs is a surprisingly beautiful place to live, with year-round attractions for visitors and residents alike. While you are here we hope you enjoy a walk on our River Walk, also known as the Freedom Trail, in honor of our military veterans. In fact, through state resolution, we are officially known as “The Veteran’s Town.” Hot Springs is a great recreation destination. We have year-round swimming, golfing, and hiking; with nearby hunting, boating and fishing. We are excited to host the first annual Wildcat Classic mountain bike race and ride on August 20 this summer. This will be a
great way to experience the back roads of the Southern Black Hills. We, of course, also have some of the finest mineral water in the world. Please take time to stop and visit the Kidney Springs Gazebo for a taste, and don’t forget to bring your water bottle; you’re going to want to take some mineral water home. However, if you find yourself falling in love with the area, and wanting to come back you’re not alone. Please enjoy our beautiful city today and always!
When you plan your trip to the Black Hills, make plans to “soak in” a new adventure and make Hot Springs, located in the Southern Black Hills, your first destination. You’ll want to “soak in” new discoveries at the world famous Mammoth Site as well as natural wonders like Wind Cave National Park, home not only to the bison, prairie dogs and antelope, but also to rarely seen underground formations in the cave itself. At Evans Plunge Mineral Springs, the Black Hills’ oldest attraction, you can soak, swim and splash in the world’s largest naturally warm mineral springfed pool. At the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary, where hundreds of wild horses roam freely over miles of preserved Western prairie, you can “soak in” the Western spirit. “Soak in” the sunshine with camping, fishing, hiking, swimming and biking at Angostura State Recreation Area, Cold Brook Reservoir and Cottonwood Springs Lake! Load up your golf clubs, too; Southern Hills Golf Course is consistently ranked one of the best places to play in South Dakota. One can also “soak in” the history at the Pioneer Museum and at Battle Mountain Sanitarium National Historic Landmark. You can even drink from
the crystal clear warm mineral spring at Kidney Springs, found along the Fall River Freedom Walking Trail, which spans 1.2 miles and will have you “soaking in” sights like our unique sandstone architecture, our waterfall, and maybe even wildlife like deer and ducks. You’ll definitely end up taking a few selfies! And that’s all before you decide to grab a meal and “soak in” the flavor from a wide variety of delicious dining choices, visit our specialty shops downtown and find the perfect gift to take home, and finally, settle in for the night in one of over 450 rooms available at one of our many budget-friendly hotels. We invite you come and visit Hot Springs, “soak in” new adventures, and if you like our community, consider making Hot Springs your new home! Come “soak in” the life!

SANDSTONE
Architecture The building blocks of a town built upon healing waters.
One of Hot Spring’s most definable characteristics is the sandstone buildings that line the main streets through town. These structures represent the lion’s share of the almost 40 historic buildings that have been identified as historically significant and their story is worth retelling. What is sandstone? Sandstone is a type of sedimentary rock made of tiny, grain-sized pieces of older rocks or sand-sized minerals that become cemented together, then compacted by pressure from overlying deposits, to form new form of rock – sandstone. Like sands, sandstone comes in many colors – tan, brown, yellow, red, gray, pink and white. Color indicates minerals within the sand. Locally, iron deposits mark local sandstone pink to red, while manganese lends a purplish hue. The even distribution of color has helped make sandstone a common building material for millennia, either as the prin-

HOT SPRINGS’ SANDSTONE ARCHITECTURE building. Said to be an imitation of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, Charles Smith designed the building, originally a hotel for those who came to partake of the city’s healing waters. The building blends elements of both Victorian and Richardsonian Romanesque architecture with its crenellated towers, hood molding, wrought iron balconies and neoclassical front porch. A 1977 fire gutted the hotel, but it was restored as close to its original appearance as possible, and converted, with state help, in 1979, into housing for the elderly and people with disabilities. The Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home, west end of Minnekahta Ave. – Built in 1889, Hot Springs’s first major stone building was a Victorian design. After the Civil War, Grand Army of the Republic veterans legislated soldiers’ homes. Hot Springs was chosen for its “banana belt” climate and healing waters. The Dudley quarry provided stone for the State Home, which recently underwent major renovations, including the removal of older outbuilding and the construction of a new wing, but the original building remains. The Pioneer Museum, 300 N. Chicago –Architect William Grey designed this, one of the city’s finest sandstone structures. Built in 1893for $23,000 by A.D. McKay, using Burke quarry stone, teamsters unloading the blocks from railroad cars found it a “hard pull” up the steep hill, because McKay was too cheap to use a steam-powered hoist. His workers carried the blocks up the hill on litters. Completed in 1894, the school grew from a log house with a volunteer teacher into a four-story building with seven teachers and 264 students. The building remained the city’s public school until 1961. As the Historical Society’s home it now houses many unique pioneer-era artifacts.
The Battle Mountain Sanitarium, home of the Hot Springs VAMC for more than 100 years, features a three-story Byzantine revival-style building. Fall River County Courthouse, 906 N. River St. – Built in 1891, the courthouse is a good example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. The Bodega, 611 North River St. – The Bodgea, built in 1892, was once the city’s most popular saloon and gambling hall, and a bordello. It has also housed a law office and dry goods store. The building is currently being rehabilitated. Union Depot, 630 North River St. – The Chamber of Commerce’s information center is another great example of Richardson Romanesque architecture. Four trains per day used to come through Hot Springs, and they were greeted by a band, and red carpet rolled out from the Evans Hotel to welcome visitors. City Hall 303 N. River St. – An elaborate sandstone building, City Hall was built in 1893 by A.D. McKay. The upper floor was originally an opera house.
The Evans Quarry (pictured in the background) was the location in which many of Hot Springs’ sandstone blocks were mined. Between 1886 and the mid-1930s more than 25 quarries operated in and near Hot Springs, some in the hills, others closer to the prairie.
Battle Mountain Sanatorium, 500 N. 5th Street (top of hill) – Designed by Thomas Kimble in 1907, the U.S. Veteran’s Administration building is unique and one of The Veterans Town’s most important services. A grand stairway leads up to the three-story Byzantine revival-style building, built with local stone, with a central dome, red clay tile roof, elaborate decorative elements. Extensions spring out of the center and an open courtyard, like spokes on a wheel. The Sanatorium was located in Hot Springs due to the region’s climate and its healing waters.
The Fall River County Courthouse was built in 1891 and is a good example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture.

70 Years of Hosting the crowning moment Hot Springs has been the only home of the Miss South Dakota pageant. According to Ray Peterson, who for the last 50 years has served as the volunteer director and producer of the Miss South Dakota Pageant, the pageant has its roots in a Water Carnival that was once held at Lake Larive. Peterson recently shared a history of the pageant at the Fall River History Conference, held at the Mueller Civic Center in January of 2016. Lake Larive is located north of the city, between Cold Brook Lake and Evergreen Cemetery, off Germond Street. “The original water carnival had a little bit of everything,” Peterson said, “water floats, a talent contest, and in the evening people went into HS auditorium to vote for Water Festival Queen.” The festival began in 1927 and was run by the city Chamber of Commerce through 1937, Peterson said. During those years the carnival was quite a draw for Hot Springs, bringing tourists into the community. In 1938, the carnival was taken over by the Business and Professional Women’s Club, Peterson said. Poor weather conditions thinned the crowd that year, the last year the event was held at the lake. In 1939, a group of businessmen decided that the Butler tract would be a better setting for the carnival. Unfortunately, this location did not meet with audience approval, and the event ended abruptly The last Water Festival Queen, crowned in June of 1936 as Miss Hot Springs, was Jane Miller,. who passed away late in 2015. Recounting this to the Hot Springs Star in 2012, Miller said the contestants wore gowns and swimsuits. There was no interview or talent competition, just a beauty pageant. Miller topped 11 other contestants – many her friends – by three votes. The winner was decided by votes tallied at the Water Carnival dance, held in the old City Auditorium. After the water carnival ended, the city

Chamber of Commerce wanted to reactivate this drawing card to the city, Peterson said. Meanwhile, in Washington, D.C., during the early 1920s, the roots of the Miss America pageant were also growing, morphing from city and regional beauty contests into a nationwide effort, according to official Miss America pageant history records. For example, in 1921, the junior class of Western High School in Washington, D.C. submitted 1,000 photos to be judged for a “popularity contest.” Margaret Gorman was chosen as the first Miss Washington, D.C., through this effort. Her prize was a trip to the Second Annual Atlantic City Pageant, as an honored guest. Gorman, and similar winners from other states, entered this pageant, too. Gorman took the first place amateur prize; silent film actress Virginia Lee won the professional prize. As the Miss America pageant grew, in 1935, Lenore Slaughter, a conservative Southern Baptist and pageant critic from St. Petersburg, Fla., voiced some issues with the pageant, an event she considered “degrading,” according to Peterson. Slaughter wanted to improve the image of the pageant from a boardwalk beauty contest into something more. When Slaughter contacted the pageant sponsors to complain, they ended up hiring her for a six-month gig to generate new ideas for the pageant that would not be so “degrading.” One of these ideas, from the mid-1940s, was to pull a representative from each of the 48 states in existence at that time to compete for national honors, Peterson said. Since the growth of the Miss America effort fell directly in line with what Hot Springs was trying to do in trying to rejuvenate the water festival, the city quickly connected itself with the Miss America pageant. E. B. Adams, a prominent Hot Springs citizen, desired to stage a “bigger and better pageant,” and as a result,

ABOVE LEFT: Hometown contestant Autumn Simunek is crowned the 2015 Miss South Dakota. the Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce applied for and received the formal South Dakota franchise from the Miss America Pageant. Hot Springs has held on to this franchise ever since, one of two of the longest running franchises maintained by a community in the Miss America pageant history. Seaside, Oregon shares the honor. Slaughter’s six-week consultation lasted 32 years, because she was named Executive Director of the Miss America Pageant. By 1947, Peterson said, the Hot Springs pageant –now called the Miss South Dakota pageant – had formally arrived. The first pageant was staged outdoors, at Woodward Field, on July 11, 1947. It remained there until 1964 when it moved inside to Case Auditorium. In 1985, a Case Auditorium fire forced the pageant to move into what was at one time a cattle roping arena adjacent to the Red Eye Saloon. The pageant returned to Case Auditorium in 1986 before moving to its now-permanent home at the Mueller Civic Center in 1988. Peterson said many of the stages and platforms from Woodward Field remain in use, they’ve simply been added to, to make them larger. Even the Hot Springs runway is original. It has been shortened from the original 48 feet, to 40 feet, and is now 32 feet long, so it can fit into Mueller Auditorium. Peterson said the Miss South Dakota pageant holding to this runway tradition acts like a mini- Miss America pageant and may judges like this, because it is a signature of the Miss America pageant. The pageant will celebrate its 70th Anniversary, June 16 – 18, 2016.

Great weather, beautiful scenery, friendly people.
What more could you ask for?
If you are looking for a new place to call home, Hot Springs has the amenities of larger towns, while still hanging onto the small-town, stress-free, relaxed atmosphere for which everyone seems to be searching these days. Not sure? Let’s start with the scenery. The Black Hills as a whole offer a wide range of beauty, with numerous exploring options for your free time. But the Hills begin in Hot Springs, the Southern Gateway of the Black Hills of South Dakota. Rugged, pine-tree covered hills give way gently to rolling plains, as centuries of geological work below the ground created one of the prettiest places in the world to call home. Then there is the weather. Now, South Dakota is renowned for its harsh winters, there is no getting around it. Hot Springs, however, is the home of the highest average annual temperature in the state, boasting an average temp of 64 degrees, which tells you that even though winter does pass through, it rarely makes a lengthy stay. Snowfall averages less than 30 inches per year, and in a warmerthan-average climate, doesn’t stick

The Freedom Trail along Fall River in downtown Hot Springs is a popular walking path, which passes in front of a waterfall and leads to the Kidney Springs Gazebo, pictured on the far right. around very long. As we are situated down in the Fall River valley, snow comes down softly and gently, as opposed to the ‘horizontal snow’ often associated with the state. There is a reason why the rest of the state enviously calls us “The Banana Belt.” The city itself follows the path of Fall River as it meanders through the valley in which it has flowed for many centuries. Hot Springs is situated 3,535 feet above sea level. What that means is that even when it gets warmer during the summer, there is very little humidity. Have kids? Hot Springs has a highly regarded public school sys-
tem, offering top-notch education for students pre-school through high school. In addition, Bethesda Lutheran is a private elementary school with church ties, while Cornerstone Bible Institute offers post-high school education. The city’s new library opened in 2007, featuring log-cabin and natural stone construction. While the building may have a rustic look, inside everything is cutting edge, with several computers for Internet access, a special children’s wing and an entire room dedicated to the vast and wide-ranging history of Fall River County. The library is across the street from Butler Park, the largest of
our five city parks. Butler Park has four ball fields to occupy the kids during the spring, summer and fall. There are baseball, softball and soccer fields, two tennis courts, a full-size basketball court, horseshoe pits and a walking trail. There are two large picnic shelters that are popular destinations throughout the year. Construction on a new skateboard park was completed in 2006. Other city parks are sprinkled throughout the town, most in close proximity to the river, with picnic shelters to accommodate your family, when they come to visit you after your move. The walking path, named the Freedom Trail, meanders through the city next to the river, where you are likely to see ducks and deer year-round. Hot Springs boasts a highly competitive 18-hole golf course, a mini-golf course, a bowling alley, movie theater and swimming pool (Evans Plunge). Situated at the southern tip of South Dakota’s Black Hills, Hot Springs is accessed via U.S. Highways 18 and 385, as well as State Highways 79, 71 and 89, making travel a breeze. The nearest ‘big’
town is Rapid City, an hour to the north on a four-lane highway while Chadron, Neb., is the same distance south. So even in the event you can’t find it here, chances are it’s not too far away. Rapid City and Chadron are also the nearest major air service outlets. Hot Springs does have an airport southeast of town, with a hard surfaced runway and taxiway. The new Fall River Hospital, a true expression of a community project, offers a wide range of specialty clinics. Land near town was donated by an individual for the express purpose of a hospital. In 2014, the hospital expanded to also include a 48-bed nursing home called Seven Sisters Living Center. Hot Springs is home to Pine Hills Retirement Community, an assisted living and Memory Care facility adjacent to the golf course, offering one or twobedroom apartments and beautiful view for its residents. The Hot Springs VA Medical Center noted its 108th Anniversary in 2015 and continues to offer healthcare to the veterans of our country’s armed services. The Hot Springs VA serves a large portion
of western South Dakota, northwestern Nebraska and eastern Wyoming. It is also the area’s largest employer. The community has also been home to the South Dakota State Veterans Home since 1890. Many of its earliest residents were veterans of the Civil War, several of which are buried at the historical cemetery on the grounds. After a ground-breaking in the fall of 2013, a brand-new $41.2 million state home was just opened in the winter of 2016 followed by a grand opening and dedication in March. Hot Springs has a positive work atmosphere. Unemployment rates are low, 5.4 percent as of January 2015. The average annual pay for workers in Fall River County was $32,077. Real estate in the area is still considered a bargain, compared to other sites in the Black Hills. A number of development areas are available both within the city limits, or just outside if you are looking to build among the pine-covered hills.

Fun in the Southern Black Hills All your family’s vacation wants at your fingertips When you are looking for a quiet, relaxing place to spend all or part of your vacation this year, you have only to look to the Southern Black Hills and the city of Hot Springs. Hot Springs is the southern gateway of the beautiful and majestic Black Hills. Within minutes you could be looking at one of the unique granite carvings found in the Black Hills, observing some of the native wildlife in its natural state or dropping a line into a lake or stream to catch some of our famous freshwater fish. But to relax, recharge and rejuvenate, Hot Springs is the place to be. Nestled in a valley through which Fall River has flowed for thousands of years, Hot Springs is built around the river which gives Fall River County its name. More than 3,500 friendly people call Hot Springs home and many families have lived in the area for several generations. The river itself is fed by some of the many springs which gave Hot Springs its name. The list of things to do during your stay in Hot Springs is lengthy and includes activities sure to interest everyone in the family. Young or old, there is

Springs and nestled next to the Cheyenne River, Dayton Hyde has built a sanctuary for the free-roaming wild horses on more than 11,000 acres of prairie. The sanctuary is also home to a wide array of other wildlife. Tourist busses get visitors ‘up close and personal’ with the wild mustang which contributed a great deal to the building of the American west. Another area attraction also featuring horses is the Windcross Conservancy, near Buffalo Gap, which is home to the endangered Spanish Mustangs of North America. The nonprofit agency offers educational tours May through September. Families interested in taking in a little fishing can venture just three miles north of Hot Springs and check out Trout Haven Ranch. Don’t worry if you didn’t bring your fishing poles or tackle - everything is provided and fun is guaranteed. Nearby, there are two state parks, a national memorial, a national monument and one national park, all within minutes of downtown Hot Springs. Angostura State Recreation Area, located just south of Hot Springs, is built around the lake that was formed by the building of Angostura Dam, on the Cheyenne River, featuring camping, bike trails, boating and fishing. Each year it also hosts the Southern Hills Triathlon, on Labor Day weekend. Right on the north side of town is Cold Brook Reservoir. This small, crystal-clear lake is limited to either electric or human-powered watercraft and offers up exciting trout fishing for the patient fisherman. Just north of Hot Springs is Wind Cave National Park, featuring a cave that has more than 118 miles mapped, making it the third-longest cave in the nation. Also of interest if you are a ‘caver’ is the unique boxwork of Wind Cave itself. Above the ground, Wind Cave features wildlife galore, as park visitors will note the large buffalo and huge contingent of prairie dogs, along with coyote, elk, antelope, deer and eagles. This year, Wind Cave National Park, along with nearby Jewel Cave National Monument and Mount Rushmore National Memorial, will

Created in 1916, the National Park Service (NPS) preserves the country’s natural and cultural resources for the enjoyment, education and inspiration for this and future generations. Several events are planned in Wind Cave to commemorate the NPS’s 100th anniversary, including National Park Week April 16-24, a BioBlitz on May 21, a past employee reunion on July 8-9, as well as playing host to the finish line of the American Solar Challenge - a college competition to design, build and drive solar-powered care in a cross-country race. Directly north of Wind Cave National Park is Custer State Park, home of the Wildlife Loop, three lakes, four resorts and adventure around each turn in the park. Custer State Park also is home to the Black Hills Playhouse, where top quality live theater productions are held each summer, as they have been for more than 60 years. On September 30, Custer State Park will once again host its 51st annual buffalo roundup. What began as a simple exercise to bring in the park’s buffalo herd to check its health and sort out those to be sold, has grown to one of the largest weekend tourist draws in the Southern Hills.
Along the way travelers may pass the Crazy Horse Memorial, sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski’s ambitious project to carve a memorial to the Lakota Chief. The privately-funded project is continued by the children of the great sculptor, who also worked on Mount Rushmore. Return to Hot Springs and take a walking tour of the sandstone buildings that make up the downtown historic district. The sandstone used in construction was quarried near Hot Springs and was used extensively when the town was built, including the unique Hot Springs VA Domiciliary facility and the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veteran’s Home. A brand-new $41.2 million State Veterans Home just opened in the spring of 2016, the original ‘Old Soldiers Home,’ which first served veterans of the Civil War and which dates back to before South Dakota was a state, will be retained. Visitors can re-connect with nature with a leisurely walk along the Freedom Trail, a sidewalk which meanders along Fall River from one end of the city to the other. Don’t be surprised if you happen across some mule deer or perhaps a flock of our mallard ducks on your journey. Up the hill from the river you will find Butler Park, the center of the Hot
Springs’ outdoor recreation during the summer, with ball diamonds, tennis and basketball courts, soccer fields, picnic areas and a skateboard park providing a backdrop for many outdoor activities. Directly on the south side of Butler Park is the Hot Springs Public Library. The library, which had its grand opening in 2007, boasts a log and stone exterior, and all the amenities you would expect on the inside. In fact, the stonework on the inside of the library is re-claimed from a fire at one of the old sandstone hotels. The marks from the quarry can still be seen on many of the stones. There are seasonal activities planned in Hot Springs as well, and depending upon when you choose to visit you could find yourself attending the crowning of Miss South Dakota, taking in a free concert, rooting for your entry in a duck race or observing some of the top poets and songwriters in the nation. The 70th Miss South Dakota will be crowned in Hot Springs on June 18, with activities slated throughout the

Family fun in the great outdoors One of the Hot Springs area’s greatest draws is its abundance of outdoor activities. Whether it’s golfing, boating, hunting, fishing, biking or hiking, the Southern Black Hills is your kind of place! Wildcat Classic Bike Race For mountain bikers, a brand new event known as the Wildcat Classic is set to kick off this summer, with its inaugural race set for August 20. The Wildcat Classic is a 40-mile mountain bike race/ride where participants climb and descend more than 5,000 feet of trails, consisting of single track and re-discovered forest service roads. The event operates under a United States Forest Service permit and will be absolutely fascinating to most participants in that this route is virtually unknown to anyone besides its race organizers. It will truly be new trail to discover and “a ride on the Wild Side.” It is named after the Wildcat Canyon, which is the canyon at the heart of the race course. Other topographical places riders will discover are Cold Brook Canyon, Cold Brook Reservoir, Antelope Canyon, Theater Ridge, and Twin Sisters Range just to name a few. There are several places where the trail literally hugs the west and south borders of Wind Cave National Park. While the main course is 40 miles, there are two shorter distances. A 26-mile loop with less climbing, and a free kids’ seven-mile ride that follows the first part of the course and heads back before the terrain becomes too challenging. The race start and finish is located at beautiful Chautauqua
Park, which is located in the City of Hot Springs itself. This allows families of the participants to send off their riders before turning to a full list of activities while family members are riding. It is a great opportunity for the City of Hot Springs to showcase all the City has to offer and show race visitors how fantastic our City and hospitality really is. Participants and families can enjoy the beauty of Chautauqua Park by relaxing by or wading in Warm Fall River and are invited of course to hang around after the event for post-race activities. A city built on healing Hot Springs is a city with a history built on its healing waters. Hot Springs was the Black Hills’ first tourist destination, and with good reason. The springs that feed Fall River as it meanders through the heart of the city are running today, just as they were more than 130 years ago. With the healing powers of the naturally flowing warm springs, from which water comes out of the ground at a constant 87 degrees, it is no surprise that a town sprouted by the river that still carries water with the same healing chemical makeup as it did when the town was founded. From the mineral water’s mist rose elaborate sandstone buildings, and proprietors provided all manner of services and goods.
With its hospital and multiple clinics, residents enjoy a wide range of medical services right at home.
With Battle Mountain as a backdrop, a welcome sign greets drivers entering into the Hot Springs city limits on Hwy. 18. Around that same time, more than 100 years ago, the precursor to today’s Department of Veterans Affairs saw fit to build the Battle Mountain Sanitarium in this tranquil and healing area. Soldiers who served during the Civil War were among the first to come and bask in the warm weather and warmer water. That healing continues today, with both the Hot Springs VA Medical Center, as well as the South Dakota State Veterans’ Home serving the needs of the men and women who served their country. An optometrist, two dentist offices, four chiropractors and four medical clinics serve the community and region
During the fall of 2013, a new State Veterans Home broke ground followed by its Grand Opening just this spring, in March 2016. The new building features the most up-todate practices while blending with the aesthetic presence of the sandstone buildings that are more than 100 years old. Fall River Health Services operates Fall River Hospital and offers a family clinic with expanded hours and a wide array of specialty clinics. New in 2014 was the opening of Seven Sisters Living Center, attached to the north side of the hospital. Plans are nearly complete for the home of the ambulance service, also to be located near the hospital.
