Mayor’s Ride draws riders from everywhere Deb Holland Journal staff STURGIS | To his fellow riders at Monday’s Sturgis Mayor’s Ride, Gaetan Marquis, didn’t appear out of the ordinary. But, the 72-year-old Canadian rider from Montreal makes daily trips to the local hospital for chemo treatments after having a brain tumor removed this past month. He and his friends planned the trip to the 73rd Sturgis motorcycle rally, so when Marquis got the OK to travel they headed for Sturgis. “I was here in 1976 and I Deb Holland, Meade wanted to come back,” he said. County Times-Tribune “It’s great, the winding roads, Sturgis Mayor Mark Carstensen the sightseeing and the people.” and his 6-month-old son, Carson, Marquis’ friends Bert Nadeau pose for photos before the start of and Daniel Laflamme say they the annual Mayor’s Ride Monday. wanted to take part in the

Mayor’s Ride because funds raised went to a great cause and they got to take in some great scenery. That camaraderie and willingness to contribute to a worthy cause is what keeps riders coming back year after year, says Sturgis Mayor Mark Carstensen. For Carstensen, who recently was elected to a second threeyear term, the ride was a family affair. He and his wife, Heidi, welcomed a new son, Carson, in March. Decked out in his best Harley-Davidson one-piece romper, Carson posed for photo ops before the ride began. The celebration of Carson’s first rally was subdued when ride organizers heard from police there was a possible fatal accident in Vanocker Canyon Monday morning. The first leg of the ride takes participants through

Vanocker Canyon. The ride was delayed, but went on as planned through Vanocker Canyon, along Nemo Road, past Pactola Reservoir, on to Mount Rushmore, to Custer and then it ended with lunch at Custer State Park. South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard was on hand for the ride. Daugaard returned late Sunday from the National Governors Association meeting in Milwaukee, Wis., where he and fellow governors joined Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker on a ride which ended at the HarleyDavidson Museum and commemorated the 110th anniversary of Harley-Davidson. “The Sturgis rally is a great economic driver in this state,” he said. “I wanted to be sure people could see me enjoying this great event.”

TruTV’s ‘Full Throttle Saloon’ starts taping Season 5 Jackson Bolstad Journal staff

Rowdy crowds, brawls and exciting entertainment make the Full Throttle Saloon one of the most recognized symbols of the Sturgis motorcycle rally. It’s also why TruTV has returned for a fifth season. “TruTV is the first thing that let people get a bird’s eye view of what happens at Sturgis,” said Drucilla Owenby, a rally regular from Schertz, TX. Owenby and her husband, Bry, have been coming to the rally for many years. Regular watchers of the TruTV show, the couple decided to celebrate the rally at the Full Throttle Saloon this year, the first time for the couple. “If you want to see the action, you have to go where the parties are,” Owenby said, adding that she hopes to see herself on this season’s show. TruTV descends on the bar for 10 days every August during the rally. During that time, camera crews follow bar owner Michael Ballard, his managers and his staff, capturing the reality of owning and operating the world’s largest biker bar, according to its website. Full Throttle Saloon owners and management declined an interview, but according to its website, www.fullthrottlesaloon. com, 300 employees and 100 bartenders serve the 700,000 bikers that come from all over the world to the rally. “I have put everything on the line multiple times to keep growing the Full Throttle Saloon brand,” Ballard said on the website. “I’ve rolled the dice every year and I’ve been lucky so far — but you never know what tomorrow will bring.” Season 5 is expected to begin airing in late-autumn or early winter.

As the music roared from the main stage at the Full Throttle Saloon Sunday night, TruTV camera crews were busy videoing dancing girls atop high flying horse saddles, concert and disputes of every kind. The crew had to work its way through the mass of people who filled the bar everywhere they went. Bill Martin, from Denver, Colo., said he expects Season 5 to be one of the best. Last season’s finale was amazing, he said, and TruTV keeps getting better and better. Martin said the Full Throttle Saloon has changed many aspects for this year’s venue. He said those

changes will make the show even more exciting. “This is like the one week you get to do the things you can’t do at home,” Martin said. “Half the stuff people what to do they will get the chance to do this week.” The never-ending action and craziness is what makes the show so popular said Billie Ryan, from Lead. Ryan said she records the show and loves how she never quite knows what to expect with each episode. “They have boobs, midgets, crazy tattoos, weird hats, awesome concerts and a little bit of everything else mixed in

here,” Ryan said. “Anything goes, and that’s what TruTV watchers like to see” As the Full Throttle Saloon’s popularity has grown, the rally has attracted other television networks this year. Country Music Television is filming the first season of its rally-based show called “Bike Week” at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip Campground. “It’s a huge honor to have CMT television filming their “Bike Week” series here and were excited

to be able to send a piece of the Chip into millions of homes across the country,” said Rod Woodruff, president of the Stugis Buffalo Chip, in a media release. Bike Week will begin airing Aug. 18, with new shows premiering each night at 8 p.m. ET/PT through Aug. 24, according to CMT’s website. The show aims to capture a behind-the-scenes look into the music and culture of the rally. The competition from

CMT has Ryan a little on edge, she said. The loyal watcher said “Full Throttle Saloon” will always be her favorite. She said the Buffalo Chip isn’t anywhere near as exciting or thrilling. “TruTV came here first, because the way Full Throttle was doing things,” Ryan said. “The Buffalo Chip got CMT here to pick up the seconds.” Contact Jackson Bolstad at 394-8419 or jackson.bolstad@ rapidcityjournal.com

Ernie Miller was aboard a converted luxury liner headed to the Philippines during World War II with 8,000 other soldiers when he saw a hand-scribbled sign hanging from the Golden Gate Bridge that read, “1,163 miles to Wall Drug.” Once Miller, 89, a Sturgis native, had landed in the Philippines, he was quickly transferred to Japan. En route, a tropical storm nearly sunk the ship. But Miller eventually returned safely home in the fall of 1946. Now, he will be the toast of Military Appreciation Day from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Tuesday at the City of Riders Expo Tent at Fourth and Lazelle streets in downtown Sturgis. “Basically it’s just a day to honor our military,” said Christine Steele, constituent services coordinator for the city of Sturgis. “Our World War II veterans are getting older, so it’s important to recognize them.” The mainstay of the event is the Dakota Thunder Ride from Ellsworth to the Sturgis Community Center, with up to 250 bikers taking part. A reception follows the ride, when Miller will be recognized as the man of honor this year. M i l l e r wa s d ra f te d in 1945 with two of his brothers. He attended

DEADWOOD | In a thundering, traffic-stopping exodus from this Wild West town, the sixth annual Legends Ride stormed toward Sturgis Monday afternoon and a date with Kid Rock at the Buffalo Chip Campground. “It almost looks like a party,” a helmet-clad Buffalo Chip President Rod Woodruff said before the departure of some 400 motorcycles from Deadwood. “It just gets bigger, better and more successful every year.” To date, the Legends Ride has contributed more than $300,000 to local charities. Proceeds from this year’s ride are dedicated to Black

Hills Special Olympics and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame, Woodruff said. “The Legends Ride is all about the people,” he said. “The bottom line is it’s a great ride for a good cause with a bunch of giving people.” Participants paid $150 per bike for the chance to ride with motorcycle legends from Deadwood through Vanocker Canyon to Sturgis. Before departing Deadwood’s historic Main Street, organizers conducted an auction to benefit the two charities selected as this year’s beneficiaries. An autographed guitar sold for $1,700, while a 2012 Harley-Davidson Road King, converted by students at

Sturgis Brown High School into a custom Road Glide, garnered $55,000. John Paul DeJoria of Paul Mitchell and Patron Spirits’ fame, who described the rally as a “unique anomaly” in America, threw in a case of Patron and hair-care products for a year to the winning bidder from Texas. Among the legends joining DeJoria for the ride were three generations of the Arlen Ness family, as well as Orange County Choppers’ founder Paul Tuttle Sr. “This is my 42nd rally in a row,” said a smiling Arlen Ness, besieged by admirers and autograph seekers as he mounted his custom bike. “I haven’t missed one in all that time and this ride is a classic.”
