Submission Fee is $10 per submission (one story or one poem) for RCLAS members, $20 per submission for non-members. Annual RCLAS Membership $35 a year. 1st prize - $150, 2nd prize - $100, 3rd prize - $75 for each category. 3 honourable mentions in each category. Maximum three submissions per person, 3 TOTAL combined, in any one or all three categories. Winners and honourable mentions will be published in RCLAS E-Zine, Wordplay at Work. Previously published work will be accepted as long as author retains copyright. If you are a past Write on! Contest winner/honourable mention.DO NOT submit the same story or poem. If you DID not place in a past contest that same entry can be submitted again. Cover letter to include Name, Address, Email, Phone, Category, Title, Payment option. Blind judging. Submissions to judges are anonymous. Submit entry as a Word Document (Font Times New Roman, Size 12) DO NOT Include your name or identity on your word document. Double check and clear “author” in your word doc file properties. This is important. Current Board Members are not eligible to submit.

Shawn Douglas Gale is a Canadian screenwriter, an academic, and a critically-acclaimed author. He is the author of the story collection The Stories That Make Us. He is also the author of the acclaimed fantasy series for all ages World of Dawn. Shawn is working on developing it into film. Gale's many stories and articles have been published in anthologies and periodicals in the U.S. and Canada. Gale is a member of Burnaby Writers’ Society, Royal CityLiterary Arts Society and the Writers' Union of Canada.

https://rclas.com/membership/become-a-member/ Description: We know great description allows a reader to dive deep into a character’s POV and picture the scene, but we don’t want to have so much description that we slow the pacing and don’t have enough action to keep readers turning the page. This workshop will discuss what description works, when you want to use it, as well as how to balance it with action. Come with your laptop and pen ready as there will be prompts and things to get you thinking about your manuscript. Visit Eileen’s website https://eileencook.com/ In second grade Eileen’s teacher wrote on a homework assignment “I am sure someday you will be an author” which is a tribute to the psychic abilities of elementary school teachers, as well as Eileen penchant for making things up. While she would go on to fill endless notebooks with really bad poetry, short stories, and the occasional start to a novel, she would first go on to pursue a career as a counsellor working with individuals with catastrophic injuries and illness. Eileen quickly discovered that the challenge of working with real people is that they have real problems and she returned to writing where she could make her characters do what she wanted. Her first novel was published in 2008. Entertainment Weekly called her novel WITH MALICE a “seriously creepy thriller” which pretty much made her entire year. When not planning murder and mayhem on the computer, Eileen enjoys reading, knitting, yelling at her dogs to stop digging holes and watching hockey (which she is required to do as a new Canadian.) Eileen is a popular speaker at conferences both in the US and in Canada, provides writing/editorial coaching, and is a mentor/instructor for The Creative Academy and the Simon Fraser University The Writer’s Studio.

Born and raised in the UK, Cathy Stonehouse has made her home for the past 30 years in East Vancouver, on the unceded, traditional Coast Salish territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh nations. She is the author of a novel (The Causes, Pedlar Press 2019), two collections of poetry (Grace Shiver, Inanna 2011, and The Words I Know, Press Gang 1994), and one collection of short fiction (Something about the Animal, Biblioasis 2011). With Fiona Tinwei Lam and Shannon Cowan, she co-edited the creative nonfiction anthology Double Lives: Writing and Motherhood (McGill-Queens University Press, 2008) and reviews fiction and nonfiction for a variety of literary publications; she also edited the literary magazine EVENT between 2000 & 2004. She has worked as an editor, typesetter, tutor, peer counselor, adult literacy and ESL instructor, and political organizer, and holds a BA (Hons) in English from Oxford University, an MFA in Creative Writing from UBC and a Certificate in Expressive Arts Therapy from Langara College. Currently, she is a regularized faculty member of Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s creative writing and interdisciplinary expressive arts programs, and freelances as an editor/manuscript consultant and workshop facilitator.
