Dear Partner in Ministry,
RCL Benziger has been involved in religious education since 1792, when Joseph Benziger first began selling devotional books in the small village of Einsiedeln, Switzerland. Much has changed in 220 years, but the one constant that has remained is the tradition RCL Benziger has maintained by providing the best in Catholic religious education.
Be My Disciples
Keeping with our tradition, heritage, and experience, we continue to move forward with a changing world and all of its challenges.
As 2012 begins, we at RCL Benziger often ask the question, “What would the world be like if it was filled with Christ’s disciples?” It is this question that drives us to produce the type of engaging and enriching curriculum content you see in Be My Disciples.
Be My Disciples is a Christ-centered and truly Balanced Approach to catechesis. It offers an exciting exploration of our Catholic faith, using a holistic scope and sequence to help young people see ALL of life through the eyes of faith. This program uses Doctrine, Scripture, Tradition and Spirituality to lead Catholic children and their families to grow in their conversion to Jesus Christ, accept the demands of discipleship, and empower children and their families to answer Jesus’ call to discipleship.
We invite you to request a free review pack for this new program at BeMyDisciples.com. We think you’ll be as excited by its possibilities as we are!
Our Catholic Heritage
This revision of the popular “This is Our Faith Heritage” program, Our Catholic Heritage serves as a primer for children who are being initiated into the life of the Church. Following the directives of the General Directory for Catechesis, it uses the RCIA’s initiatory approach, prescribed by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, to both evangelize and catechize new learners in the intermediate grade levels. This is an important catechetical need, and we intend to help you meet it!
Roman Missal
To prepare for the implementation of the Roman Missal, Third Edition, we have updated student books for Blest Are We, Faith & Word editions (grades 1-8); Faith First Legacy edition (grades K-8); and Bendecidos bilingual edition (grades 1-6). Additionally, the student texts for all of our sacrament programs have been revised in both the English and bilingual editions.
It’s a digital age
Our new website, BeMyDisciples.com, provides a wealth of support and materials for catechists, program leaders, parents, and children. You will find stories of discipleship using video and blogging, helpful links, and additional content. One new feature in particular, “Sister Rose Goes to the Movies,” helps parents to be aware of film content issues and helps them raise true “digital disciples.” In addition, several other products, such as Apprentices in Faith and Faith Connection, are offered in digital form to save time and money for your parish.
We are incredibly proud of the RCL Benziger legacy in religious education and spiritual formation, and we are committed to upholding that legacy in all we do.
Blessings to you in the great work you do for the Church! Sincerely,
Peter M. Esposito President

In the Time of Jesus
Two Take Home pages begin each chapter and promote connections with parish or school.
On the Road to Emmaus On the day of Jesus’ Resurrection, two of his disciples were walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus, discussing the tremendous events of the previous days. As they walked along, the Risen Jesus joined them, but they did not recognize him. It was not until they stopped to share a meal that the disciples realized that the stranger with them was Jesus. The exact location of Emmaus is not known, but it is believed to have been at the village of Amwas. The name “Emmaus” means “warm wells.” Read about Jesus’ appearance on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24:13–35.
in Literature J.R.R. Tolkien J.R.R. Tolkien (1892–1973) is the author of two of the best-loved classics of the twentieth century, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien, a devout Catholic, was a scholar and professor of Anglo-Saxon at the University of Oxford. Over a fifteen-year period, he created the fantastical world of Middle-Earth with its hobbits, elves, dwarves, and wizards. Tolkien wrote The Hobbit for his own children. Surprised by its success, his publishers

encouraged him to write a sequel, which resulted in his greatest and most famous work, The Lord of the Rings.

Jesus Is the Good Shepherd One day Jesus told the people, “I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep and they know me. I love and care for my sheep as my Father loves and cares for me.” Another time Jesus told a story about a good shepherd to help them understand how much God loves us. Jesus said, “There was a shepherd who had one hundred sheep. One day one of the sheep wandered away from the shepherd and the rest of the sheep. The one sheep got lost.” Jesus went on to tell the people how the good shepherd searched and searched until he found the one lost sheep. Jesus then described how happy the shepherd was when he found his one lost sheep. Jesus said, “The shepherd picked up the lost sheep and put the sheep over his shoulders. He carried it home. The shepherd was so happy that he told his friends and neighbors, over and over again, ‘Be happy with me! I found my lost sheep!’ ” BASED ON JOHN 10:14–15 AND LUKE 15:3–7

Distribute the children’s leaflets for chapter 5 and give the children time to look at them. Call their attention to the maze activity on the center two pages and explain the directions. Point to the shepherd in the picture, who is looking for the lost sheep. Then tell the children to find the lost sheep in the picture and to circle it. Ask the children,“Who wants to help the good shepherd find the lost sheep?” Have the children use their finger to lead the shepherd through the maze to the lost sheep. Have the children raise their hand when they come to the lost sheep. Conclude by reminding the children that a good shepherd cares for and loves his sheep. Jesus tells us he is the Good Shepherd. Jesus loves each of them and cares for them.

Hand a stuffed toy sheep to one of the children. If you do not have a stuffed toy sheep, use a large cotton ball, balled-up tissue paper or a picture of a sheep. Invite the child holding the sheep to tell one thing they remember about the Bible story and then to pass the sheep to another child. Ask that child to tell what they remember about the story. Let each child take a turn holding the sheep and telling what they remember about the Bible story. Expect some children to give the same answers.
Ask a child to pretend to be the good shepherd and another child to pretend to be the lost sheep. Have some of the remaining children pretend that they are the other sheep, and the remaining children pretend that they are the good shepherd’s friends and neighbors. Have the “good shepherd” cover their eyes. Lead the lost sheep to a hiding place in the classroom. Have the good shepherd look for and find the lost sheep. When he or she finds the lost sheep, have the good shepherd say to the other sheep and the good shepherd’s friends and neighbors, “I am happy. I have found my sheep.”
Ask and affirm responses to the question, What can you do or say this week to thank the people who take care of you? Give examples, if necessary, to help the children respond. Tell the children to take home their leaflets and share the Bible story and the activity with their family.

Welcome
Hang a large piece of chart paper in the Welcome Center on which you have printed “People we trust who take care of us” across the bottom, and have scissors and glue or paste and copies (several for each child) of the black line activity master on page 157 of this guide. Welcome the children by name and direct them to the Welcome Center. Call their attention to the words on the chart paper. Read the word TRUST aloud and have them repeat it after you. Then read the sentence aloud to them. Tell the children that we all have people who we trust will take care of us. Ask, “Who are some of the people you trust to take care of you?” and print their responses in large letters on the chart. Give the children copies of the black line activity master that show ways people take care of us. Describe each picture. Ask the children to cut out a picture that shows one way people take care of them. Help the children glue or paste their pictures on the chart. Invite the children to help you hang the chart near the door of the classroom for the families to see when they pick up the children.
Pray
Gather the children at the prayer table. Introduce the prayer by saying, “We all have people who take care of us as good shepherds care for their sheep. Let us thank God for the people who love and take care of us.” Explain to them that in today’s prayer they will pray the words, “Thank you, God” aloud after you. Invite the children to quiet themselves for prayer, using the breathing gestures. (Pause.) Lead the children in prayer. Teacher: For our parents, we say, Thank you, God. Children: Echo the words of the prayer. Teacher: For (name appropriate caregivers and helpers), we say, Thank you, God. Children: Echo the words of the prayer. Teacher: Jesus, thank you, for being our good shepherd. Thank you for giving us people to care for us. Thank you, God. Children: Echo the words of the prayer. Teacher: Together let us pray, “Amen.” All: Amen.
Additional Activity
Learn a new song.
Use this activity to reinforce the children’s understanding of the Bible story or to add a concluding song to the prayer. I Tell the children that you will teach them a song and that the name of the song is “Jesus Is My Good Shepherd.” I Practice singing the song to the tune of “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” Jesus is my good shepherd, my good shepherd, my good shepherd. Jesus is my good shepherd. He cares for me. I Sing the song with the children.
Tell the Bible story. Take the opened Bible, place the children’s leaflet inside the Bible, and tell this week’s Bible story, “Jesus Is the Good Shepherd.” Use the adapted version of the story on the Family Page of the children’s leaflet. Refer to the teaching poster or the illustration on the cover of the children’s leaflet as you read the story.

Confirmation Ritual Catechesis Prepares Young People for a Lifetime of Discipleship! Confirmation invites younger and older adolescents to experience God through ritual, reflect on the eight aspects of the Confirmation rite, and become active disciples of Jesus Christ. It supports the goals of Confirmation catechesis outlined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, calling young people to intimate communion with Jesus, lively familiarity with the Holy Spirit, and active responsibility for the Church’s mission. Preparation is centered within the parish community of faith, and continues after the celebration with up to three sessions for mystagogy.
Candidate Book In each of the eight chapters, candidates discover one of the elements of the Confirmation ritual, explore real-life examples, and enter into activities, discussion, and reflection.
Gathering and Opening Ritual Experience a ritual grounded in one of the elements of the Confirmation rite.

Family Life
RCL Benziger Family Life helps children, their parents, and teachers/ catechists:

• Build strong Catholic families • Share Catholic values • Live christian virtues • Promote child safety
Family Life
Parish Time is an especially precious commodity in the parish catechetical program. So determining the best model is crucial. Incorporating RCL Benziger Family Life into the overall parish curriculum can be successfully accomplished without losing time ordinarily devoted to the parish’s basal program. Keep in mind that Family Life enhances and reinforces catechetical formation. Below are some models that can easily be adopted to integrate Family Life into your parish religious education program. • Whole Family Gatherings • Unit-Based Model • Extended Catechetical Sessions • Summer Model • Weekend Retreat Model • Home Schooling
School Incorporating the Family Life program into your school curriculum helps reinforce the Catholic virtues and values that your students obtain with their education. Most Catholic schools offer the Family Life series in 10 teaching blocks, corresponding with the 10 lessons in each grade level. Any one of the following three models can help you implement the program into your existing curriculum. • 2-week course • 10-week course • 10-month course

Engaging Lessons Build a Partnership with Families. Two-Page Family Time Feature for Each Unit
Family Life
A two-page Family Time tear-out section begins each two-lesson unit and allows the family and students in the class to focus on the same unit theme. Prayers, ideas for family sharing, and activities that consider the needs of today’s busy families help form the spiritual and practical habits that lead to healthy Catholic homes. Spanish versions of the Family Time pages are available online.
Integrated Virtues Education The four cardinal virtues – justice, fortitude, temperance, and prudence – and their associated moral virtues, are taught and reinforced through every unit on each grade level. Each lesson helps students and their families begin to practice the skills required to live that virtue and make it a personal habit.
Easy-to-Follow Lessons Engage Your Students. Each lesson is presented in three simple parts: • Engage. Activate prior knowledge and relate lesson to life experience • Teach. Summarize main points and highlight a virtue and vocabulary • Apply. Integrate the lesson content and invite a faith choice
61
Build Strong Catholic Families Parent Connection Magazines A 16-page magazine for each grade level supports the parents’ role as the first and primary educators of their children in faith and family living. The magazines provide: • A moral catechesis for family living related to the lesson themes in the student book • Background on children’s psycho-social and faith development • Practical strategies for communicating and working together as a household of faith and discussing difficult issues • A comprehensive glossary of program terms • A choice of English or Spanish versions
Human Reproduction Booklets
Family Life
The Level A booklet (male and female anatomy and intercourse) and Level B booklet (pregnancy and childbirth) are included at no charge with student packs for grade 5 (Level A) and grade 6 (Level B), but can be used at higher grade levels if preferred. The human reproduction content is placed in separate booklets so the material can be taught at home or in class with parental permission. Guide material for parents and catechists/teachers is in a tear-out section in the center of each booklet. Spanish editions of the Human Reproduction booklets are available online at RCLBFamilyLife.com.

Matthew 23:23–26
These Words Are Hard! Today’s text comes at the end of the “Bread of Life Discourse that we have been reading since the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. This will be the last reading from the Gospel of John before taking up Mark again. These final verses of chapter 6 resume the murmuring criticisms that we read before describe the scandal scandal that Jesus’ Jesus’ and describe words were causing even among his disciples: “This teaching is difficult; who can accept it? (John 6:60). The question reflects not only the doubts of the first disciples, but also the crisis of John’s own community—the difficulty in accepting Jesus as the sacramental Bread of Life. Jesus knew that some of his own disciples would have difficulty accepting this teaching. The disciples feared that Jesus’ radical
words were driving driving people people away. words They felt that the Eucharist and the Cross were stumbling blocks would for many who otherwise would follow them. John the Evangelist concludes the chapter with the presentation of two possibilities for action: Peter and Judas. Peter, speaking for the Twelve, professed faith in Jesus, “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe . . . (John 6:68–69). Judas, on the other hand, remains in the group but is already divided between his loyalty to Jesus and the darkness that will eventually lead him to betray his friend (see John 6:70–71). Jesus is the Bread of Life for the Christian community. He is the vine, the source of strength and nourishment. Where else can we go?

Questions of the Week
The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us that the first announcement of the Eucharist divided and scandalized the disciples. The mysteries of the Eucharist and of the Passion of Christ never cease to be an occasion of division. Our Friend and Lord is inviting us to discover that only he has the words of eternal life (Cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church 1336).

Adult Faith Formation
Weekly Features Help Adults Connect the Sunday Readings to Everyday Life.
It is part of the human condition to avoid that which we do not understand. When we hear opinions that shake our beliefs, we usually criticize the person who proposed them. Jesus did that with his words on the Bread of Life. Adults What part of Jesus’ message do I find hard to live?

Responding to God’s Word. . . It is easy to relate to the disciples. Most of us are uncomfortable with the concept of mystery. We use the term when we talk about such things as the Incarnation, the Resurrection, and the Eucharist. Mystery does not imply a secret or a spooky Halloween concept. Mystery refers to something that is real but beyond our imperfect human understanding; something that causes awe rather than discussion. Often this kind of talk scandalizes the listeners. What did Jesus mean when he said that he would rebuild the Temple in three days? What was he trying to say when he promised to come back again and not leave us orphans? The discourse of the Bread of Life in the Gospel of John falls under this category of
SUGGESTIONS
scandalous sayings. Jesus was saying that one can eat the best food in town, but if they do not eat the Body and drink the Blood of Christ they will have no life within them. It was part of the Jewish tradition to eat animal meat offered to God. The problem with Jesus’ teaching is that he was not referring to animals, but to himself, a person. He offers to nourish us with his own Body and Blood—his very life. This was difficult to accept for many people of his time, especially because it was coming from the simple son of the local carpenter. May we all take the side of Peter and respond to this mystery of our faith by proclaiming, “We have come to believe . . . that you are the Holy One of God (John 6:69).

Meditation Moment The film Lady Sings the Blues portrays the life story of singer Billie Holliday. Diana Ross spent months preparing for her role as Billie. She read miles of print about Billie’s life and listened to hours of Billie’s songs. “I was committed to doing a good job, Diana said. “I tried very hard to know her as much as I could.

God of all truth, Guide us in our path as we search for answers to the Doubting Thomas in all of us. Fill us with your light and wisdom and give us the grace to believe in you even without seeing. We ask this in the name of Jesus who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Amen.
For reflection . . . Diana’s commitment to make Billie live again on the screen is a model for my commitment to make Jesus live again in our world. It invites me to ask, Am I as loyal and faithful to Jesus as Diana was to Billie? As the twelve disciples were to Jesus? NEVER LET GO OF LOYALTY AND FAITHFULNESS. In the home. Take some time to ask everyone in your family how they feel about the Eucharist. In the workplace or in school. Ask your Christian friends if they receive Holy Communion and what it means to them. In the community. Encourage people in your parish to read a good book that deals with the Eucharist in a Catholic context.

Egd[ ^aZ ^c ;V^i] Saint Thomas the Apostle Saint Thomas, sometimes referred to as Doubting Thomas, is best known for his questioning nature. During the Last Supper, when Christ told the Apostles that he was going to prepare a place for them, Thomas argued about the specifics. He was also unwilling, later, to believe that Christ had appeared to the others. It was only after Christ revealed the marks of his wounds that Thomas’ skepticism disappeared. At that point, Thomas became convinced of the Resurrection and exclaimed the famous phrase: “My Lord and my God!â€? (John 20:28). His feast day is celebrated on July 3. NIHIL OBSTAT Rev. Msgr. 5HE $OMMUNITY S 3OLE IN THE 3$*" 1ROCESS The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults makes clear in nearly 20 different paragraphs that the process of initiation takes place within the larger community of the faithful. The rite calls the community of the faithful to be engaged and involved in this process. It also places the celebrations of the rituals in the context of Sunday Mass—unless there are pastoral reasons not to do so—in order to assure that the entire community participates. (See Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults 31).
catechumens and candidates can be made available or people can be encouraged to pray for all who are in the initiation process. Children in Catholic schools or parish religious education programs can also pray for a particular catechumen or candidate or for all of those involved in the initiation process. This is a special way to involve the community and raise awareness of the journey that they are undertaking.
By offering prayer, support, and example for those who are seeking Christ, the community of the faithful becomes an active, engaged, and important part of the RCIA process.
The catechumen or candidate is initiated into the Christian way of life and becomes a member of the community of the faithful. Therefore, the community needs to be available to support those seeking to be fully initiated. Support and encouragement can come in the form of letter or card writing, phone calls, or simple kind words of support offered whenever a catechumen or candidate is present. The role of sponsor is also extremely important during this process and mirrors the support from the parish community. The sponsor is present from the Rite of Acceptance throughout the process until the anniversary of initiation.
Prayer The community’s first responsibility to the catechumens and candidates involved in the initiation process is to be present, especially on Sundays. Each person’s presence during Liturgy is essential to the community and acts as a witness, example, and support for those journeying through the initiation process. As part of the Sunday Liturgy, the Prayer of the Faithful may also regularly include a prayer for those who are in the initiation process. Whenever the Rite of Acceptance, Parish Rite of Sending, the Rite of Dismissal, the Rite of Scrutiny, and the Sacraments of Christian Initiation are celebrated, it is important that the community is present and participates in the celebration through word, song, acclamation, and gesture. Make sure to provide the community with clear worship aids as well as catechetical information so that they are fully aware of what is being celebrated in each ritual. The faithful—either individually or as households— can also be encouraged to pray daily for a particular catechumen or candidate. The names of individual I]Z 8dbbjc^inÉh GdaZ ^c i]Z G8>6 EgdXZhh

Example The initiation process is training in the Christian way of life. The community perhaps has no more important involvement in the process of initiation than that of being an example of what it means to live this way of life. Catechumens and candidates are constantly observing the community to better understand what it means to live the Gospel in all aspects of life—worship, service to each other and to the wider world, work, prayer, and even leisure. The community of the faithful, therefore, has great responsibility to strive to live the Gospel so as to provide an example for all to see and learn from.

by Joyce Rupp A best-selling author and retreat leader inspires us not only to talk to God but to listen to the “still, small voice of God” within us. She shows the ways in which prayer can bring us to greater clarity about who we are and how we are to be with God and the world.
The Spirituality of Community by Adele J. Gonzalez A masterful teacher helps us to realize that there can be no strangers in the Church and that we can all see the face of God not only in those we love, but in those who get on our nerves.
Following Jesus
Adult Faith Formation
by John Shea The brilliant theologian and popular storyteller John Shea introduces us to a Jesus who is uncompromising in his desire for us to follow him. Filled with captivating stories and profound theological insights, Following Jesus will challenge and inspire you.

Charity by Virgil Elizondo This inspiring new look at the Christian virtue of charity offers a vision that excludes no one, that hungers for justice, and that thirsts for mercy and compassion.
Mary by Kathy Coffey A well-known writer gives us a portrait and model of the Mother of Jesus as our own spiritual mother and guide in our lives and homes today.

Reconciliation by Robert Morneau Bishop Morneau draws upon his wisdom to shed new light on a sacrament that can bring us face-to-face with the merciful Christ. He closes his book with a series of his own poetic reflections on sin, forgiveness, reconciliation, and peace.
Holiness by William J. O’Malley, S.J. A masterful teacher looks at “down-to-earth” holiness and uses the examples of saints who are flawed like us to surprise and inspire us to be what we already are: children of God in the family of God.
Diversity of Vocations by Marie Dennis A Catholic mother with six children who is also a member of a Franciscan community in the inner city reflects on the many wonderful ways we may be called to serve God. She presents vocation as a wonderful invitation from the Spirit of Life to lead lives of service.
