Jesus Is the Good Shepherd One day Jesus told the people, “I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep and they know me. I love and care for my sheep as my Father loves and cares for me.” Another time Jesus told a story about a good shepherd to help them understand how much God loves us. Jesus said, “There was a shepherd who had one hundred sheep. One day one of the sheep wandered away from the shepherd and the rest of the sheep. The one sheep got lost.” Jesus went on to tell the people how the good shepherd searched and searched until he found the one lost sheep. Jesus then described how happy the shepherd was when he found his one lost sheep. Jesus said, “The shepherd picked up the lost sheep and put the sheep over his shoulders. He carried it home. The shepherd was so happy that he told his friends and neighbors, over and over again, ‘Be happy with me! I found my lost sheep!’ ” BASED ON JOHN 10:14–15 AND LUKE 15:3–7

Distribute the children’s leaflets for chapter 5 and give the children time to look at them. Call their attention to the maze activity on the center two pages and explain the directions. Point to the shepherd in the picture, who is looking for the lost sheep. Then tell the children to find the lost sheep in the picture and to circle it. Ask the children,“Who wants to help the good shepherd find the lost sheep?” Have the children use their finger to lead the shepherd through the maze to the lost sheep. Have the children raise their hand when they come to the lost sheep. Conclude by reminding the children that a good shepherd cares for and loves his sheep. Jesus tells us he is the Good Shepherd. Jesus loves each of them and cares for them.

Repeat the activity as time allows. Conclude by reminding the children that Jesus tells us that he is the Good Shepherd. He always loves and cares for us.

Connect with the child’s life.

Work on the children’s leaflet activity.

Introduce the Bible story. I

I

Hand a stuffed toy sheep to one of the children. If you do not have a stuffed toy sheep, use a large cotton ball, balled-up tissue paper or a picture of a sheep. Invite the child holding the sheep to tell one thing they remember about the Bible story and then to pass the sheep to another child. Ask that child to tell what they remember about the story. Let each child take a turn holding the sheep and telling what they remember about the Bible story. Expect some children to give the same answers.

Ask a child to pretend to be the good shepherd and another child to pretend to be the lost sheep. Have some of the remaining children pretend that they are the other sheep, and the remaining children pretend that they are the good shepherd’s friends and neighbors. Have the “good shepherd” cover their eyes. Lead the lost sheep to a hiding place in the classroom. Have the good shepherd look for and find the lost sheep. When he or she finds the lost sheep, have the good shepherd say to the other sheep and the good shepherd’s friends and neighbors, “I am happy. I have found my sheep.”

Ask and affirm responses to the question, What can you do or say this week to thank the people who take care of you? Give examples, if necessary, to help the children respond. Tell the children to take home their leaflets and share the Bible story and the activity with their family.

Welcome

Hang a large piece of chart paper in the Welcome Center on which you have printed “People we trust who take care of us” across the bottom, and have scissors and glue or paste and copies (several for each child) of the black line activity master on page 157 of this guide. Welcome the children by name and direct them to the Welcome Center. Call their attention to the words on the chart paper. Read the word TRUST aloud and have them repeat it after you. Then read the sentence aloud to them. Tell the children that we all have people who we trust will take care of us. Ask, “Who are some of the people you trust to take care of you?” and print their responses in large letters on the chart. Give the children copies of the black line activity master that show ways people take care of us. Describe each picture. Ask the children to cut out a picture that shows one way people take care of them. Help the children glue or paste their pictures on the chart. Invite the children to help you hang the chart near the door of the classroom for the families to see when they pick up the children.

Pray

Gather the children at the prayer table. Introduce the prayer by saying, “We all have people who take care of us as good shepherds care for their sheep. Let us thank God for the people who love and take care of us.” Explain to them that in today’s prayer they will pray the words, “Thank you, God” aloud after you. Invite the children to quiet themselves for prayer, using the breathing gestures. (Pause.) Lead the children in prayer. Teacher: For our parents, we say, Thank you, God. Children: Echo the words of the prayer. Teacher: For (name appropriate caregivers and helpers), we say, Thank you, God. Children: Echo the words of the prayer. Teacher: Jesus, thank you, for being our good shepherd. Thank you for giving us people to care for us. Thank you, God. Children: Echo the words of the prayer. Teacher: Together let us pray, “Amen.” All: Amen.

Additional Activity Learn a new song.

Use this activity to reinforce the children’s understanding of the Bible story or to add a concluding song to the prayer. I Tell the children that you will teach them a song and that the name of the song is “Jesus Is My Good Shepherd.” I Practice singing the song to the tune of “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” Jesus is my good shepherd, my good shepherd, my good shepherd. Jesus is my good shepherd. He cares for me. I Sing the song with the children.

Tell the Bible story. Take the opened Bible, place the children’s leaflet inside the Bible, and tell this week’s Bible story, “Jesus Is the Good Shepherd.” Use the adapted version of the story on the Family Page of the children’s leaflet. Refer to the teaching poster or the illustration on the cover of the children’s leaflet as you read the story.

For My Family

Sharing the Bible Story The Good Shepherd Cares for His Sheep

One day when many people were gathered around to hear Jesus, he told them a story about a shepherd to help them understand how much God loved them. Jesus said, “There was a good shepherd who had many sheep. One day one of the sheep wandered away from the shepherd and the rest of the sheep. The little sheep got lost.” Jesus went on to tell the people how the shepherd searched and searched, looking for the lost sheep. He didn’t stop until he found the sheep. Jesus told the people how happy the shepherd was when he found his lost sheep. Jesus said, “The shepherd picked up the sheep and put it over his shoulders. He carried it home. The shepherd was so happy that he told his friends and neighbors, over and over again, ‘Be happy with me! I found my lost sheep!’” BASED ON LUKE 15:4–7

Reflecting on Our Faith

How do we show our love and care for each other as a family?

Nurturing Our Children

Though three- and four-year-olds may appreciate it when we tell them they have done something well, it is even more powerful when they have the opportunity to learn new skills and feel the success of doing so. This is why young children frequently attempt to establish their independence and want to try to do many things by themselves. For example, your child might show a new desire to serve their own food. Although they might not be entirely successful, the experience will help them build their confidence. Your being patient as your child tries new things and practices new skills will help them develop a healthy sense of personal success and achievement.

Eight themes per age level introduce and explore seasons, holy days, and holidays.

Family Page Bring God’s love home each week through sharing, nurturing, prayer, activities, and reflection.

Living Our Faith Together Here are three activities to do with your child: Ask your child to retell the Bible story of “The Shepherd Cares for His Sheep.” I Read the Bible story to your child by placing this leaflet in the Bible at Luke 15:4–7. I Play a game of hide and seek, but call it “Shepherd and Sheep.” Take turns being the shepherd (the seeker) and the lost sheep (the one who hides). I Visit www.RCLBenzigerPreschool.com where you will find games and activities to do with your child as well as articles to assist you in nurturing the faith of your child. I

With Blest Are We: Faith & Word and Faith First Legacy, RCL Benziger offers two distinct programs, with one common mission–to lead children to Christ and to a “…deeper knowledge and love of his person and message, and of a firm commitment to follow him.” NDC 19A

Elementary

When you select a program from RCL Benziger for your school’s or parish’s needs, you know that sound Catholic teaching, strong Catholic identity, and steadfast character will be stressed throughout each lesson.

12

Both programs use approaches that engage students while offering solid content. Easyto-follow guides are filled with background, teaching tips, creative ideas, prayer, and assessment tools to assist busy teachers and catechists in planning and presenting each chapter’s subject matter.

Elementary

Blest Are We: Faith & Word Edition The best features of two popular program approaches, spiral and thematic, teach the four pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (creed, sacraments, morality, prayer) at every grade level while relating to a specific theme, Catholic belief, and practice each year. A multi-media approach provides great lesson content including online support.

Faith First Legacy Edition The spiral learning approach pioneered by RCL Benziger introduces and reinforces doctrine, Scripture, and the liturgical year every year on every grade level. Young people are engaged in a dynamic process that touches head, heart and hands in every chapter. Full online support for program directors, teachers/catechists, students, and parents is available at our award-winning website, FaithFirst.com.

13

Popular Spiral-Thematic Approach Six standard themes—one for each grade level—are highlighted along with lives of the saints and real-life examples of Christian witness. In addition, the four pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church are incorporated in the unit structure at each grade level.

Parish Student Books, Levels 1–6

Elementary

Features in the parish student books serve the needs of parish religion programs with: • Age-appropriate summary of Church teaching organized according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church. • Important Bible knowledge and skills. • Eleven lessons celebrating liturgical seasons and feasts. • Take Home family pages that promote cooperation between home and parish. • Faith In Action feature builds a sense of belonging to the Church.

School Student Books, Grades 1–6 Student books for school programs provide effective ways to empower students for a lifetime of faith by giving them opportunities to: • Build Scripture literacy and make connections with Catholic teaching. • Relate parish ministries to Catholic Social Teaching. • Learn more about the liturgical life of the Church and its feasts and seasons. • Retain what they’ve learned through Chapter and Unit Reviews. • Connect home and school using the Take Home family pages. (See pages 28 and 29 for grades 7 and 8.)

Two Take Home pages at the beginning of every chapter give families background information, an engaging activity, prayer, and a weekly planner to promote connections with parish or school.

In the Time of Jesus On the Road to Emmaus On the day of Jesus’ Resurrection, two of his disciples were walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus, discussing the tremendous events of the previous days. As they walked along, the Risen Jesus joined them, but they did not recognize him. It was not until they stopped to share a meal that the disciples realized that the stranger with them was Jesus. The exact location of Emmaus is not known, but it is believed to have been at the village of Amwas. The name “Emmaus” means “warm wells.” Read about Jesus’ appearance on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24:13–35.

in Literature J.R.R. Tolkien J.R.R. Tolkien (1892–1973) is the author of two of the best-loved classics of the twentieth century, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien, a devout Catholic, was a scholar and professor of Anglo-Saxon at the University of Oxford. Over a fifteen-year period, he created the fantastical world of Middle-Earth with its hobbits, elves, dwarves, and wizards. Tolkien wrote The Hobbit for his own children. Surprised by its success, his publishers

encouraged him to write a sequel, which resulted in his greatest and most famous work, The Lord of the Rings.

Family Life

RCL Benziger Family Life helps children, their parents, and teachers/ catechists:

• Build Strong Catholic Families • Share Catholic Values • Live Christian Virtues • Promote Child Safety

Family Life

Parish Time is an especially precious commodity in the parish catechetical program. So determining the best model is crucial. Incorporating RCL Benziger Family Life into the overall parish curriculum can be successfully accomplished without losing time ordinarily devoted to the parish’s basal program. Keep in mind that Family Life enhances and reinforces catechetical formation. Below are some models that can easily be adopted to integrate Family Life into your parish religious education program. • Unit-Based Model • Extended Catechetical Sessions • Summer Model • Weekend Retreat Model • Home Schooling

School Incorporating the Family Life program into your school curriculum, helps reinforce the Catholic virtues and values that your students obtain with their education. Most Catholic schools offer the Family Life series in ten teaching blocks, corresponding with the ten lessons in each grade level. Any one of the following three models can help you implement the program into your existing curriculum. • Two-Week Course • Ten-Week Course • Ten-Month Course

Build Strong Catholic Families Share Catholic Values Live Christian Virtues Promote Child Safety

Engaging Lessons Build a Partnership with Families. Two-Page Family Time Feature for Each Unit

Family Life

A two-page Family Time tear-out section begins each two-lesson unit and allows the family and students in the class to focus on the same unit theme. Prayers, ideas for family sharing, and activities that consider the needs of today’s busy families help form the spiritual and practical habits that lead to healthy Catholic homes. Spanish versions of the Family Time pages are available online.

Integrated Virtues Education The four cardinal virtues: justice, fortitude, temperance, and prudence and their associated moral virtues are taught and reinforced through every unit on each grade level. Each lesson helps students and their families begin to practice the skills required to live that virtue and make it a personal habit.

Easy-to-Follow Lessons Engage Your Students. Each lesson is presented in three simple parts: • Engage. Activate prior knowledge and relate lesson to life experience • Teach. Summarize main points and highlight a virtue and vocabulary • Apply. Integrate the lesson content and invite a faith choice

49

Build Strong Catholic Families Parent Connection Magazines A sixteen-page magazine for each grade level supports the parents’ role as the first and primary educators of their children in faith and family living. The magazines provide: • A moral catechesis for family living related to the lesson themes in the student book. • Background on children’s psycho-social and faith development. • Practical strategies for communicating and working together as a household of faith and discussing difficult issues. • A comprehensive glossary of program terms. • A choice of English or Spanish versions.

Matthew 23:23–26

These Words Are Hard! Today’s text comes at the end of the “Bread of Life Discourse that we have been reading since the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. This will be the last reading from the Gospel of John before taking up Mark again. These final verses of chapter 6 resume the murmuring criticisms that we read before and describe describe the scandal scandal that Jesus’ Jesus’ words were causing even among his disciples: “This teaching is difficult; who can accept it? (John 6:60). The question reflects not only the doubts of the first disciples, but also the crisis of John’s own community—the difficulty in accepting Jesus as the sacramental Bread of Life. Jesus knew that some of his own disciples would have difficulty accepting this teaching. The disciples feared that Jesus’ radical

words were driving driving people people away. words They felt that the Eucharist and the Cross were stumbling blocks would for many who otherwise would follow them. John the Evangelist concludes the chapter with the presentation of two possibilities for action: Peter and Judas. Peter, speaking for the Twelve, professed faith in Jesus, “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe . . . (John 6:68–69). Judas, on the other hand, remains in the group but is already divided between his loyalty to Jesus and the darkness that will eventually lead him to betray his friend (see John 6:70–71). Jesus is the Bread of Life for the Christian community. He is the vine, the source of strength and nourishment. Where else can we go?

The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us that the first announcement of the Eucharist divided and scandalized the disciples. The mysteries of the Eucharist and of the Passion of Christ never cease to be an occasion of division. Our Friend and Lord is inviting us to discover that only he has the words of eternal life (Cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church 1336).

Questions of the Week

Adult Faith Formation

Weekly Features Help Adults Connect the Sunday Readings to Everyday Life.

It is part of the human condition to avoid that which we do not understand. When we hear opinions that shake our beliefs, we usually criticize the person who proposed them. Jesus did that with his words on the Bread of Life. Adults What part of Jesus’ message do I find hard to live? Children How do I feel when a classmate doesn’t understand my religion?

Mark 6:17–29 “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it.

Visit us at www.FaithFirst.com (click on “Faith First for Families, click on “Gospel Reflections) and share today’s Gospel reading as a family.

Responding to God’s Word Responding to God’s Word. . . It is easy to relate to the disciples. Most of us are uncomfortable with the concept of mystery. We use the term when we talk about such things as the Incarnation, the Resurrection, and the Eucharist. Mystery does not imply a secret or a spooky Halloween concept. Mystery refers to something that is real but beyond our imperfect human understanding; something that causes awe rather than discussion. Often this kind of talk scandalizes the listeners. What did Jesus mean when he said that he would rebuild the Temple in three days? What was he trying to say when he promised to come back again and not leave us orphans? The discourse of the Bread of Life in the Gospel of John falls under this category of

SUGGESTIONS

scandalous sayings. Jesus was saying that one can eat the best food in town, but if they do not eat the Body and drink the Blood of Christ they will have no life within them. It was part of the Jewish tradition to eat animal meat offered to God. The problem with Jesus’ teaching is that he was not referring to animals, but to himself, a person. He offers to nourish us with his own Body and Blood—his very life. This was difficult to accept for many people of his time, especially because it was coming from the simple son of the local carpenter. May we all take the side of Peter and respond to this mystery of our faith by proclaiming, “We have come to believe . . . that you are the Holy One of God (John 6:69).

Meditation Moment The film Lady Sings the Blues portrays the life story of singer Billie Holliday. Diana Ross spent months preparing for her role as Billie. She read miles of print about Billie’s life and listened to hours of Billie’s songs. “I was committed to doing a good job, Diana said. “I tried very hard to know her as much as I could.

God of all truth, Guide us in our path as we search for answers to the Doubting Thomas in all of us. Fill us with your light and wisdom and give us the grace to believe in you even without seeing. We ask this in the name of Jesus who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Amen.

For reflection . . . Diana’s commitment to make Billie live again on the screen is a model for my commitment to make Jesus live again in our world. It invites me to ask, Am I as loyal and faithful to Jesus as Diana was to Billie? As the twelve disciples were to Jesus? NEVER LET GO OF LOYALTY AND FAITHFULNESS. A reflection on the Sunday reading that invites a response

In the home. Take some time to ask everyone in your family how they feel about the Eucharist. In the workplace or in school. Ask your Christian friends if they receive Holy Communion and what it means to them. In the community. Encourage people in your parish to read a good book that deals with the Eucharist in a Catholic context.

Egd[ ^aZ ^c ;V^i] Saint Thomas the Apostle Saint Thomas, sometimes referred to as Doubting Thomas, is best known for his questioning nature. During the Last Supper, when Christ told the Apostles that he was going to prepare a place for them, Thomas argued about the specifics. He was also unwilling, later, to believe that Christ had appeared to the others. It was only after Christ revealed the marks of his wounds that Thomas’ skepticism disappeared. At that point, Thomas became convinced of the Resurrection and exclaimed the famous phrase: “My Lord and my God!â€? (John 20:28). His feast day is celebrated on July 3. NIHIL OBSTAT Rev. Msgr. First Reading—Joshua 24:1–2a, 15–17, 18b The actual conquest of the Promised Land was probably a gradual process taking place over many years, as opposed to an abrupt, particular moment, such as is alluded to in this passage from Joshua. Nonetheless, the narrative of the conquest is told in terms of dramatic moments, such as this one where the people commit to God.

Second Reading—Ephesians 5:21–32 This passage is modeled after the “household codes” common to Stoic and Hellenistic Jewish writers of the time. Through this literary genre, practical examples of virtue in family life were presented.

Gospel—John 6:60–69 When confronted with the difficulties of believing in Jesus, those who encounter him are forced to decide. They must choose either to follow the Lord or abandon his ways. The choice highlights the difficulty of discipleship and clarifies for us that a commitment to Jesus comes about not on our own power, but by the generous action of God’s grace in our lives.

Why Is This Important? The mystery of faith is just that. It is a tremendous mystery because its focus and grounding is the one who is the Mystery that draws us to himself, God. This does not mean that faith is impossible. It is within our grasp because:
