PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Welcome – great to see members get in the spirit for ARH Hat Day – supporting Mental Health Research. Frank in his “Cornish” hat and Dominic with his “Turkish” hat looked very stylish. We raised an amount of $181 from the day (donations, raffle, fines and silver pot) - so the Club have proudly sent off a cheque for $200 in support of Hat Day for Mental Health Research. Thanks all. Australian Rotary health was founded over 30 years ago initially with a focus on SIDs, and the involvement of ARH in raising awareness and providing funds for research has seen the incidence of SIDs reduced by over 50%. In recent years ARH broadened its involvement and now includes cancer research in collaboration with Government, and also providing Scholarships for Medical Research and Education. Our Club participate with ARH in the Indigenous Medical Scholarship and Bendigo South in the Motor Neuron Disease Research Scholarship.
Zsofi our Exchange Student gave the members an update of her week, settling in and getting to know her new host family. Zsofi attended the Girton Annual Fair and enjoyed the day but did overlook to mention

Great to see, back at the club after their overseas holidays, Garry Gunnell, Joy Bruce, Kaye Graves and Bill Gray - just in time for a busy few months for the club. Our guest speaker was David Lloyd whom was introduced by Val Broad (see Speaker Notes).

Bendigo Cup Day Reflections from a former GSE team member That Bendigo should be drinking recycled water
He is current President of the Australian Performing Arts Centres Association (APACA). He has been on the executive committee of APACA since 2008. He also sits on the executive of the Victorian Association of Performing Arts Centres (VAPAC) and has previously been Deputy Chair of the Northern Australian Regional Performing Arts Centres Association (NARPACA). He is a Council member and venue representative of the Performing Arts Touring Alliance (PATA), Australia’s peak body for the performing arts touring sector. He has also just stepped down from a 5 year term as Secretary on the Bendigo Tourism Board. David Lloyd “Bendigo Theatre Project”
Superior technical and practical specifications will allow larger shows to be held. Bendigo Theatre will seat 960 on three levels (the Capital has seating of 500).
Complex will also house Dance Studios, a Bar (which is cleverly hidden during use of theatre by school) and plenty of amenities. Car parking within 400 metres of Theatre for over 800 cars including utilising the BSSC School Bus Interchange after school hours. The visual presentation by David via powerpoint was spectacular and really gave a great feel for how the theatre will look.
Five year Master Plan that has come to fruition - focus on providing a first class Performing Arts Centre, which can also be used for other community purposes such as Conferences and Functions.
Joint project of Bendigo Senior Secondary College (BSSC) contributing $7.5m via the Education Renewal Fund, Federal Government $12.3m, State Government via Regional Development Victoria $3.0m and City of Greater Bendigo (COGB) Council An absolutely first class presentation with the final virtual “fly through” a real highlight - again I no $3.0m. doubt have not fully captured the content and again Theatre to be owned by BSSC and leased to COGB encourage all members to get to the meeting to hear on 50 year “peppercorn lease”. these wonderful speakers! GOLF NIGHT JUVENILE DIABETES RESEARCH FOUNDATION The Golf Day for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation last Sunday went off well, raising more than $5,000. President Brian, who is known for his “win at all costs” tennis game, was a late scratching from the Rotary Team when he discovered who this team mates were, and decided ‘They can’t win’ - and he was right. Glenn Reilly, Rod McDonald, Noel Whitfield and Graeme Clarke did win a prize though, with 17 teams playing, they weren’t in the first 16. Money taken for the raffle on the day was taken on an honour system, and four prizes were collected. Peter Reading won a patio heater, much to Vera’s delight. Ray & Margaret Paulsen won a CFMEU morning tea kit, being a stool with a cooler attached for stubbies. Bruce Perrin won a golf umbrella, & Frank Lean a bottle of wine, which he left at the meeting. Dear fellow Rotarian, Australian Rotary Health is once again running its mental health research awareness day and I’m writing to you all individually to make you aware of Hat Day, and to ask you to join in, both in your club and in your workplace.
We want to make this a national day, involving everyone, and yes we do need funds. Like all groups, we have been hit by the GFC and need resources to keep up our research programs. So get your workmates involved. If you’re not working, get into the clubs and other groups you associate with. The wider we spread this message, the better the chances of making the lives of so many so much better.
Have a Hat Day at work. There are lots of themes you could take, but the aim is to collect money and have a good time doing it. Get your staff and workmates involved, and get Mental Health on the improve.
Thanks for all you have been doing for Rotary. It is very much appreciated.
Last year was the first time we ran it, and it was a very, very successful day. However the main thrust came from Clubs and their members.
