BASKETBALL FANS... On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff of Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC), welcome to our campus and to another exciting year of Yellowjacket basketball! As president of this great institution, I am excited for what the academic year holds for our student-athletes, both on and off the court. RCTC strives to maintain an outstanding athletic program, which includes setting examples of good sportsmanship and providing personal growth opportunities for our student-athletes through both academic performance and team experiences. This is accomplished by living our values of being learner-centered, valuing excellence, respect, teamwork, innovation, and, along the way, a little fun. 2018-19 BASKETBALL SEASON PROGRAM
2018-19 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYERS Kyleigh Wangen, a sophomore guard from Stewartville High School, is completing her generals while attending RCTC. During her freshmen year the Yellowjackets participated in the National Tournament and won the 2018 Region XIIIA Championship. She enjoys Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and her favorite movie is Creed. Her favorite sports team depends on whoever Kyrie Irving is playing for at the time. She has a special talent in clicking her heels. Her family consists of her dad Jace Hampel, mom Andrea Wangen, and sisters, Caden and Olivia. Lexie Worden, a freshman guard from Kasson-Mantorville, is majoring in radiography. She was a two-time allconference performer, and received high academic honors while in high school. She was a member of the three-time conference championship teams. Her favorite food, movie and sports team are as follows: hot dogs, The Breakfast Club, and Minnesota Wild. Her family include her mother, father, and sister. Grace Riley is a sophomore guard/forward from Rochester Mayo High School who is a radiography tech major. As a member of the 2018 Region XIIIA Champions and national tournament participants, Grace was rewarded with second team MCAC all-state, and MCAC all-southern division teams recognition for her play last season. While in high school she received Big 9 honorable mention allconference, academic all-state, and was a Scholar Athlete honor roll member. Her favorite movie is Lilo and Stitch, and she enjoys watching the Golden State Warriors basketball team, and lists pickles as her favorite food. Her family includes her parents Don and Mandy, siblings Lexis (who is a member of the RCTC women’s basketball team), Logan, Olivia, and Landen. Olivia Matti is a freshman guard/forward from Hayfield High School. She was an all-conference recipient. She is majoring in nursing. Her favorite food as anything and everything, favorite movie is The Blind Side, and favorite sports team is the Minnesota Lynx. Her family consists of Dad, Mom, two brothers and a dog. Ariana Owens is a freshman forward/post player from Highland Park High School in St. Paul. She was a three-time honorable mention all-conference and was named as team MVP. She is a liberal arts major with interest in the dental hygiene program. Her favorite movie is Space Jam, lists chicken wings as her favorite food to eat, and her favorite sports team is the Minnesota Lynx. Amber Chapel is a freshman forward/post player from Houston High School in Minnesota. While in high school she was an honorable mention all-conference performer. She lists liberal arts as her major, with interest in pursuing physical education and coaching. She is also a member of the RCTC Yellowjackets softball team. Her favorites include A League of Their Own and the Minnesota Lynx. Her family includes her mom, two sisters and one brother. Mattie Hellerud is a freshman post player/ forward from Tri-City United High School in Minnesota. She is majoring in psychology while at RCTC. She lists The Longest Ride as her favorite movie. Her favorite sports team is the Minnesota Vikings and she loves cheeseburgers. Her family includes dad Doug, mom Kim, and her sister Samantha. Alyssa Whitson, a freshman post player/ forward from Randolph High School in Minnesota, is majoring in nursing at RCTC. Her favorite movie is Despicable Me. She says that she will eat everything so no main favorite food, and she loves the Minnesota Lynx. Her family consists of her dad, mom, and three brothers. Abby Bauer is a sophomore forward from Caledonia High School majoring in surgical technology while at RCTC. She too was a member of the 2018 Region XIIIA Region Champions and national tournament participant team last year. While in high school she received honorable mention all-conference selections and was academic all-state. Her favorite movie is Crazy Rich Asians, favorite food is vanilla pudding, and favorite sports team is the Minnesota Lynx. Her family includes her parents Brian and Kim, and siblings Austin and Arick. Jadyn Anderson is a freshman post player from St. James High School in Minnesota. She received academic all-state honors, was selected as team MVP (2018), and most improved (2016) by her teammates in high school. She is majoring in the health science field and lists cheeseburgers as her favorite food to eat. Her family is made up of her mom Jana, dad Doug, and sister Kaydi. Olivia Haug is a sophomore post player from Lanesboro High School. She was selected first team MCAC all-state, all-southern division as a freshman last season. She was also a member of the 2018 Region XIIIA Championship and national tournament participant team last season. While at Lanesboro she scored her thousandth career point and was an allconference selection, participated in the state track meet three times, was on the honor roll and RCTC dean’s list. She was also voted as a three-time MVP by her teammates. She is completing her generals at this time and is undecided as to what she would like to major in. Her favorite movie is Blue Streak, favorite food is chicken wings, and favorite sports team is the Duke Blue Devils. Her family includes her mother Jennifer Haug and her grandparents Phil and Cloey Haug.

2018-19 BASKETBALL SEASON PROGRAM
2018-19 BASKETBALL COACHING STAFF Steve Hucke – Women’s Basketball Head Coach, Coach Hucke enters his 17th season in 2018-19 as head coach. His record is 287-159. The Yellowjackets have seen much success since Coach Hucke arrived in 2002. They have won numerous region, state and division championships, or have finished in the top on a consistent basis. This was highlighted by the winning the 2009 National DIII Women’s Basketball Championship with a 34-0 record and participated in 2018 National Tournament. He has coached 10 All-Americans, many Distinguished Academic All-Americans, and has many all-region, all-state and all-division selections. Hucke has received many individual awards: National Coach of the Year, Region XIIIA Coach of the Year, MCAC State Coach of the Year – three times – and Southern Division Coach of the Year six times. He has had many players move on to play DI, DII, DIII and NAIA basketball at various Colleges and Universities. Many have continued their education as part of RCTC’s many medical fields after completing their two years of eligibility. The team’s fast paced style of play leads to a high potent offense and full court intensity. Physical defense is an exciting brand of basketball to watch. Coach Hucke is also the head baseball coach and teaches in the physical education department. He has a master’s degree in sports administration from Minnesota State University-Mankato, and a Bachelor of Science in education from Upper Iowa University. His daughter Danielle lives in Arizona and his son Collin resides in Byron. Coach Doug Waldner enters his first season as the main assistant coach for the 2018-2019 season. Coach Waldner served on Coach Hucke’s staff in 2014-2015 as a volunteer assistant. He served as head women’s basketball coach at Riverland Community College during the 2016-2018 seasons. Coach Waldner brings a wealth of experience to the Yellowjackets. He ran his own Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) program in the Rochester area for the past five years, and does a great job in recruiting and recognizing top talent. He will be in charge of recruiting, team defense, and post development. Coach Waldner and his family live in Hayfield.

LaPlante has coached baseball, football, and golf at RCTC, and was an assistant coach at Winona State University in basketball and baseball prior to coming to RCTC. He has a B.S. in physical education from Winona State University (1995) and a master’s in physical education from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (2000). He and his wife Kristin have two children, Sean (18) and Kendall (15). He has seven brothers and sisters and 18 nieces and nephews. Jason Bonde – Assistant Coach enters his 10th year as an assistant coach with the Yellowjackets. He is currently an Academic Advisor in the TRIO program at RCTC. Prior to his time here at RCTC, Bonde was an assistant coach at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mont. He is a former player at RCTC (2001) under Coach LaPlante, and went on to play at Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minn. He received his B.S. in physical education from Bemidji State and his master’s in education from Southwest Baptist University. Jason’s family includes his wife Sara and his daughter Faith (11), Nora (6), and Alexandra (2). Matt Christensen – Assistant Coach enters his sixth season as an assistant coach at RCTC. Prior to his time at RCTC the Northfield, Minn., native played at St. Olaf College and then spent four years as an assistant coach at Carleton College in Northfield. Matt is married to his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth, and they have two children: Violet (4) and Rose (2). Matt brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to RCTC basketball.

Katie Slowiak – Volunteer Assistant Coach will begin her fourth year with the Yellowjackets. She works with all position player development as well as film breakdown and scouting. She played college basketball at UW-Stout and is a Wisconsin native. She currently works at Mayo Clinic.
Roy Womack is a sophomore from John Marshall High School in San Antonio, Texas, majoring in elementary education. While in high school, he was on the AB Honor Roll and named his team’s defensive player of the year. His favorite foods are crawfish, crab, and chicken. His favorite movies are American History X and The Lion King. His family includes his mom, three brothers and three sisters. His special talent is acting and has been in many plays here at RCTC. Elijah Flenorl is a freshman from Wauwatosa East High School in Milwaukee, Wis., majoring in sports medicine at RCTC. His favorite movie is Paid in Full and favorite food is steak. While in high school he received honorable mention athletic honors and his team was regional champions. He came to RCTC because he knew he would have to work for what he wanted.
Dani Adams – Volunteer Assistant Coach will start her second year with the Yellowjackets. She will work with forward and post positions. She was an MCAC All-Southern Division player as a member of the Yellowjackets. She was also a member of a team that finished runner-up in the region championship in 2015. She transferred to UW-Stout where she played one more year before transferring and graduating from Winona State. Brian LaPlante - Men’s Basketball Head Coach enters his 23rd season as the head coach of the Yellowjackets. His overall at RCTC is 437-191 (73 percent winning percentage). He has had 57 alldivision, 41 all-state, and 17 all-region players in his tenure. 52 Yellowjackets have went on and competed at various four-year institutions in his 22 seasons as head coach. Coach LaPlante was named District 4 Coach of the Year in 2006, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2016. His teams have been to the NJCAA National Tournament six times (2006, fifth place; 2010, national runner-up; 2011, national runnerup; 2013, eighth place; 2015 third place; and 2016, national runner-

Mark Manyuon is a sophomore from Austin High School getting his associate art degree while at RCTC. His high school honors include, Big Nine Honorable Mention and his team’s defensive player of the year. His favorite sports team is the Minnesota Timberwolves, and his favorite food is chicken alfredo. He came to RCTC to create opportunities for himself by becoming a part of a winning culture. His family includes Mary, Wilson, Maddie, Olivia, Emmanuel, Ater, Lazaro, and David. Ki-Anthony Blake is a freshman from Martin Luther King High School in Milwaukee, Wis. He is in the sports management program. In high school he was on the high honor roll, two-time honorable mention for athletic honors, two-time Rick Majerus WBY shootout MVP, and his team won the conference championship. Some of his favorite things include soul food, Avengers: Infinity War and the Golden State Warriors. His family includes his mom and brother.
ROCHESTER YELLOWJACKETS DaMichael Brown is a freshman from Laurel High School in Laurel, Miss., majoring in sports management while at RCTC. While in high school, he was on the honor roll, voted most improved player, and his team won first team all defense. His family includes his dad Michael, mom Darmita, aunt Shelia, and uncle Tonya. His aunt Shelia and uncle Tony live in the Twin Cities area and told him about RCTC. DaMichael loves the coaching staff and the program. A few of his other favorites include the movie Soul Man, the Golden State Warriors, and fish. Tanner Jonas is a freshman from Wayzata High School and his hometown is Rochester. While in high school, he did PSEO and was on the Dean’s list at Normandale Community College. His athletic honors include all conference honorable mention and two trips to the state tournament. His team placed third his junior year and they were Lake Conference Champions. His favorite food is Buffalo Wild Wings, favorite team is the Timberwolves, and his favorite move is anything from Disney. His family includes his parents Scott and Angie, and brother Trey. Kong Kong is a freshman that comes to us from Mankato East High School and his hometown is Gallatin, Tenn. While at RCTC he is studying business and accounting. His high school team received fifth place at state in 2018 and were section two 3A champions. His favorite food is orange chicken, favorite team is the Golden State Warriors, and favorite movie is Amateur. He came to RCTC because he knew this program would push him to do his best and always strive to get better. His special talent – backflips! Edmon Paul Oyet comes to us from Mankato East High School in Mankato, Minn. He is studying for an AA Degree and came to RCTC to further his education and play basketball. His favorite food is everything and favorite movie is Good Will Hunting. While in high school his athletic honors included two-time all-city and all-conference. His team voted him most improved. His family includes Sisko, George, Sabina, Emelda, and Daniel. Naa’il Mahdi is a sophomore from Lakota West High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. While there, his academic honors included Phi Theda Kappa Honor Society Member and a two-time varsity letter winner. His favorite movie is Enter the Dragon, favorite sports team is the Denver Nuggets, and his favorite restaurants are Chipotle and Benihana’s. While at RCTC he wants to graduate with an AS degree in either engineering design or sports management, while pursuing an offer from a four-year school. His family includes his grandma, mom, and sister. In his spare time, his special talent is making music beats. Antonio Maddox is a freshman from Richfield High School in Minneapolis. His high school honors include two-time defensive player of the year in the conference, all-conference honorable mention, and he was named team captain his sophomore year. His academic honors include AB honor roll and he won the Against All Odds Scholarship. He came to RCTC because he heard it was a great program with great coaching and he wanted to be close to home. A few of his favorite things include pizza, the Rush Hour film series, as well as the Lakers, OKC Thunder, and Vikings. His special talent? He can dance! Ray Adams is a sophomore from John Marshall here in Rochester. He is studying business while at RCTC and wants to win a ring for the program. His favorite movie is Kung Fu Panda and is favorite food is pizza. His family includes his mom, Direen. Benjamin Opsahl is a sophomore from Goodhue High School where he helped his team place second and third place in the state tournament during his career there. He was also named all-conference and named to the all-tournament team. He came to RCTC to continue his education and continue — Page 5 —
playing basketball. His favorites include chicken alfredo, The Lion King and the Minnesota Timberwolves. His family includes dad Mark, mom Paula, brother Will, and sister Kate. Michael James is a freshman coming to us from Douglass High School in Memphis, Tenn. His high school athletic honors include all-metro and all-star. His team honors include state runner-up and conference champions. He chose RCTC to better his education and have a chance to play basketball at the next level. His favorite movie is Ted, favorite food is chicken, and favorite team is the Portland Trailblazers. Mickey Jah is a freshman from Minneapolis and went to St. Anthony Village High School where he received honorable mention all-conference and all-conference. He came to RCTC to further his academic and athletic career and study sports medicine. His favorite things include shrimp alfredo, the LA Lakers, and the movie Like Mike. His family includes his mom, brother and five half siblings. Dashanirro “DJ” Pettigrew is a sophomore from Milwaukee Pius/ Milwaukee School Languages in Milwaukee, Wis. In high school his athletic honors were first team all-conference, honorable mention D3 all state, career leader in assists and all-time leading scorer. His team was Cambridge Thanksgiving Shootout Champions and 2015 Regional Champions. He came to RCTC to study liberal arts, win a national championship, and be coached by a winner. His favorite food is his grandma’s home cooking. His favorite movies are Paid in Full and Next Friday, and his favorite teams are the LA Lakers and the Milwaukee Bucks. His family includes mom Senora, dad Denzel, and sisters Najeaa and Sierra. Moga Lero is a freshman coming to us from Mahtomedi High School in Oakdale, Minn. He was on the academic honor roll. His athletic honors include defensive player of the year, most improved player of the year, and best free throw percentage, and team honors were all-conference and honorable mention. His favorite food is mac and cheese, favorite teams are the Minnesota Vikings and Golden State Warriors. Black Panther is his favorite movie. He chose RCTC so he could pursue basketball and study sports management. His family includes his mom, dad, three brothers, and a sister. His special talent is speaking different languages. Denis Paul is a freshman from John Marshall High School here in Rochester, where he was two-time student of the month, on the homecoming court, and a teacher nominated leader. His team honors include conference runner-up. He chose RCTC to start his degree in pre-med and still be close to home for his family. He loves any food with potatoes, Lebron James is his favorite athlete, and his favorite movies are Shrek and Good Will Hunting. His family includes mom Santa Anthony, dad John, and siblings Francis, George, Grace, Sabela, Brian, and Eric. Samuel Barnes is a freshman from Stewartville High School where he was on the honor roll, athletic all-conference honorable mention, team MVP, and Capitan. His favorite movie is Collateral Beauty, his favorite team is the UNC Tarheels, and his favorite food is sesame chicken. His family includes Jeff, Connie, and Max. He came to RCTC to continue his education, get a liberal arts degree, work with a youth program, and to play basketball. Paul-Axel Messou comes to us from Strasbourg, France, where he attended école commerciale privée. He picked RCTC to play basketball and get a good education while working towards a liberal arts degree. His favorite sport is basketball, he enjoys African food, and his favorite movie is Princess Mononoke. His special talent is playing the piano. Alexander Hompe is a freshman from Chatfield, Minn., where he attended high school. His athletic honors include Three Rivers allconference, and his major is business management. His favorite film is Pulp Fiction and his favorite team is the Minnesota Timberwolves. His family is made up of mom Danette, dad Samuel, sister Megan, and brother Jorgen.
