FROM THE RCTC PRESIDENT Dear Friends — On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff of Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC), I thank you, the donors, for your commitment to the RCTC Foundation, to RCTC, and to our students. Your contributions make a difference. They help students stay on their educational path with fewer obstacles; and help academic programs ensure students learn on cutting-edge technology, equipment, and tools relevant in their future professions. FROM THE RCTC FOUNDATION BOARD PRESIDENT Dear RCTC Community Stakeholders — It is my pleasure to submit to you the audited Annual Financial Report for the RCTC Foundation. This annual report covers the financial statements of the Foundation and recognizes donors who stepped forward in that time to show their support for the students and programs of Rochester Community and Technical College. Our generous donors give for a diverse number of reasons, but mainly, it is because they support our mission. Their gifts have had a tremendous impact on new and returning RCTC students and the programs offered at RCTC. As President of the RCTC Foundation it is an honor to support the Mission of Rochester Community and Technical College: Rochester Community and Technical College provides accessible, affordable, quality learning opportunities to serve a diverse and growing community. We, the Foundation, would not be able to support the College in our five major areas without the help of all of you.

Alex Lair

Foundation Board President

• • •

We submit herewith the Annual Report of the Rochester Community and Technical College for the 2021 fiscal year that ended June 30, 2021.

Academic Quality – Financial and in-kind support allows RCTC to obtain cutting-edge equipment and innovative grants. Championship Athletics – RCTC offers nationally renowned varsity athletics that are unmatched by any other two-year college. Scholarships – Access to affordable education can be limited for some. Scholarships can change that. Student Support – Students who are healthy both physically and mentally perform better academically. Strategic Investments – RCTC gladly accepts any and all giving which supports students.

On behalf of the RCTC Foundation, I want to personally thank our donors for their generosity and unwavering commitment to our students’ educational pursuits. The donations to the Foundation continue to make a difference in our students lives, especially during the COVID 19 pandemic. We are all aware of the continued financial and emotional toll the past two years have had on our community. The RCTC Foundation is privileged to have the support of our donors, alumni, and faculty and staff in supporting the students of the Rochester Community and Technical College. SPOTLIGHT ON STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS | TESS BUESCHER Tess was pregnant and living with her dog in her car during a Minnesota winter. That’s when she decided that education was the key to a better life for her and her child. After finding housing, Tess became a student at Rochester Community and Technical College in Spring 2019. “I love RCTC. I am so grateful for the opportunity. I have amazing instructors that believe in me and encourage me. I feel important here.” At RCTC, Tess discovered a love of science, especially organic chemistry. “Our instructor really challenged us. When I synthesized my first molecule, it was amazing.“ Now Tess wants to become a pharmacist. Despite receiving a generous Pell grant, Tess works three jobs and still struggles to get by. RCTC Foundation scholarships are critically important. Tess’s scholarships help pay for tuition and reduce her workload so she can maintain a 4.0 GPA and serve as a leader on Student Senate and Phi Theta Kappa. With the support of her RCTC instructors and Foundation scholarships, Tess transferred this spring and is already applying to pharmacy schools. As hard-working as she is, we are confident she will succeed.

SPOTLIGHT ON DONORS | DICK AND PATRICIA GEIER In Fall 2020, Dr Dick Geier, retired surgeon and former OMC President, read a magazine that would impact him deeply. Living Lutheran devoted an issue to how systemic racism continues to impact Black families. One article challenged its readers to look at their own lives and ask themselves, “How can I help?” As he was considering this question, Dick saw a news story that highlighted the significant disparity between the percentage of students of color and the percentage of teachers of color. He then found an even higher disparity in the Rochester schools. Education had always been important to Dick’s family. His

“Offering a scholarship for a black student to become a local teacher would give the student a chance for a meaningful career, provide more role models for students of color and foster positive relationships for all students in Rochester schools.”

mother had been a special education teacher. Dick’s parents had been active in the NAACP working for open housing and desegregation. Finding a way to increase the number of Black teachers in the Rochester schools seemed like a critical first step. He thought, “If we can’t recruit them, we need to grow them.” Dick’s wife, Patty had worked her way through university and knows that the cost keeps many students from getting their degree. In 2021, the Geiers established the Karen Geier Memorial Scholarships at the RCTC Foundation, in honor of Dick’s late wife Karen. These two $5,000 scholarships cover tuition costs (up to 30 credits annually) for an incoming student and a returning student studying education. In addition, the Geiers offer scholarships for these students to continue at Winona State University. Their goal is to attract more students of color to the teaching profession —hopefully graduating and eventually teaching at Rochester schools. While Dick is focused on the long-term impact of his scholarship, he is happy to know that he is helping RCTC students achieve their goal of becoming teachers. He says, “It will take time, many years, to graduate enough new teachers to address the disparity in our school, however, each new teacher of color will have a significant impact on the lives of his or her students.”

NEW SCHOLARSHIPS SPOTLIGHT ON DONOR | DICK AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT SCHOLARSHIPS (WDS)

Minnesota employers are facing a critical shortage of workers with the skills needed for high-demand occupations. To address this shortage, the Minnesota Legislature has provided funding for 45 scholarships at RCTC valued at $2,500 in the fields of Advanced Manufacturing, Agriculture, Health Care Services, Information Technology, Early Childhood Education, and Transportation. In addition, the Legislature offered to match NEW scholarships in these industry areas. Our community responded generously, raising $25,000 in new scholarship funds. Because of our donors and this WDS program, we are able to offer an additional $50,000 in new scholarships to RCTC students in these 6 high-demand areas. We would like to highlight the following new Workforce Development Scholarships: •

We see this as an opportunity to provide for others that don’t have what we have.” RCTC is our community’s college and is dedicated to meeting the needs of our community. Julie says “I’m proud to be an RCTC alumni. Scholarships Change Lives...

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

“The long-term impacts of this scholarship on my life are endless. It allows me more time with my son that I could never get back. It allows me to work harder to maintain my 4.0 GPA which will help me when applying for higher education programs. It also allows me to focus on my own mental health and not worrying how bills will be paid or how we are eating.”

RCTC FOUNDATION | PAGE 4

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

“I am so amazed and excited to experience college at RCTC. I can’t wait to see what the future brings me. But I have a hard time paying for my classes. Someday, I would like to live in a nice house, without worrying about being short of food. When I grow up, I will be able to help someone else in need. Knowing that someone helped me pushes me to keep working for something I always wanted to be.”

SCHOLARSHIPS HONOR WARREN SKAAREN LEGACY AT RCTC From Rochester to Hollywood. When you start at RCTC, you can go anywhere! Warren Skaaren, a 1966 alumnus from Rochester State Junior College (predecessor to RCTC) went on to become one of the most successful screenwriters of the 1980s. Skaaren worked on well-known films including Top Gun (1986), Beetlejuice (1987), Beverly Hills Cop II (1988), and Batman (1989). During this time, Skaaren maintained a close connection with his long-time mentor, Robert (Bob) Wise, Associate Dean of Students at RCC. Sadly, Skaaren passed away from cancer on December 28, 1990. In 2021, the Warren Skaaren Charitable Trust committed to fund $75,000 in scholarships to make a college education accessible and affordable for high-need students, especially those that have faced barriers to receiving an education such as students of color and single parents. In 2021, this donation provided scholarships

Burton continues, “Warren was an exceptional person. He created his Trust so that he could continue to make a difference. These scholarships will help students develop their abilities, choose the careers they want, and move on to the next stage of their lives. It is rewarding and humbling to see Warren’s legacy

continue by helping these students succeed.”

Amon Burton, Trustee of the Warren Skaaren Charitable Trust,

met the 13 Skaaren Scholars and members of the Skaaren family at a reception in October. Burton says, “RCTC meant a lot to Warren. He told me often how important the College was in his life, how he had matured here, and how much his relationship with Bob Wise meant. The College was a very formative experience in his life.”

Warren Skaaren 1946 - 1990

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

“The scholarship will help me achieve my goals without going further into debt with student loans. I have many student loans but have never been in a good spot to pay anything back. I felt a weight lifted off my shoulders when I found out that I got the scholarship. It has decreased my worry in wondering how I am going to pay for everything. It has impacted my confidence as it helps me get that much closer to my goals.”

thought to setting up a charitable trust in their wills and estate plans. Since Warren’s passing in 1990, the Warren Skaaren Charitable Trust has given away far more to the causes Warren cared about than the gift in his will to establish the Trust. And what is amazing is the Trust still has funds to continue Warren’s legacy for many more years.”

TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT SETTING UP AN ENDOWMENT OR LEAVING A GIFT TO THE RCTC FOUNDATION IN YOUR WILL, CONTACT THE RCTC FOUNDATION AT 507-281-7771 OR FOUNDATION@RCTC.EDU.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

“I know what I want to do, but it is incredibly difficult to succeed educationally if you must work and raise a child. I work 3 part-time jobs and even with a generous Pell grant, I barely get by. This scholarship helps to ease some of the stress of wondering how I am going to make enough money to pay for rent, pay for books, and afford gas to get to school.”

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

“When you have experienced adversity, you come out the other side wanting to make sure others don’t go through the same things you have or that if they do there is someone there to help. So, when you give a scholarship, you aren’t just investing in me, you are investing in everyone I will be able to help. I just want you to know I will make that worthwhile.”
